Greens of all kinds are less likely towilt when picked in the morning, especially the tender lettuce leaves,
so let’s harvest them first. When the plantsare 5” to 8” tall, gather leaves gently in onehand and cut with scissors, leaving an inchor so to grow back. The best way to wash greens is to float ina basin or bowl of clean water and agitateto loosen soil from leaves. Put them in astrainer and draw more clean water andrepeat. It takes at least 3 rounds and maybemore, if after a rain. Run your hand to thebottom of the basin and, if you don’t feelsand, you’re finished. A final rinse underrunning water and then a round in the saladspinner and you’re ready to bag andrefrigerate. This makes salad-making timea breeze and the greens should last from 7days to 2 weeks, depending on refrigeratortemperature, 36° being ideal for lettuce.
The more sturdy greens such as collards, kale and chard are easy to crisp up if theybecome wilted. The smaller leaves can besoaked in water for 10 minutes or so andwashed the same as lettuce. Lettuce tendsto get water logged if soaked and doesn’tcrisp up like the sturdier greens, so don’ttry this with lettuce. Larger leaves can becrisped by cutting about an inch of the stemsand setting in water like a bunch of flowers. They take up the water and become crispagain, making them easier to chop forcooking. They’ll stay fresh for 2 weeks andmaybe longer. Salads can be made with endlesscombinations of your favorites from any rawvegetables to walnuts to boiled eggs, but mypersonal favorite is cooked beets with freshminced ginger topped with the juice of afresh orange and a drizzle of olive oil. Asimple salad can be enjoyed with just lettucetossed with cottage cheese ~ delicious! Braising greens is simple as well. Whilesautéing onions and garlic, stack or bunchthe leaves and roll tightly, then slice thinly(¼” to ½”) with a large knife. Run the knifethrough the opposite direction a coupletimes to make the strips shorter (3” or 4”long). Add the greens to skillet and cook

down on medium high heat, stirring now andthen. Olive oil works fine for this dish, ortry toasted sesame oil or even butter if youdare. Add any desired seasonings such asgarlic powder (if you haven’t used fresh),paprika, cayenne pepper, black pepper, freshor dried herbs of your choice, and salt. I liketo add chopped, roasted red bell pepper (youcan buy these whole in the jar), or chop freshred bell pepper and sauté with onion andgarlic. When cooked to desired tenderness, add either pepper vinegar, rice vinegar, lemon juice or even pickle juice and you’vegot a really healthy and delicious dish. Theycan also be boiled or steamed in which caseyou don’t need to cut so finely. Just stackup and cut into about 2” pieces. I like minewell done, but I know the less they arecooked the more nutritious they are, andmany prefer them that way. Do your ownthing, but just do it!

Where there is water, there is life. It’s one of those absolutes of life. So, having come out of a drought
last year, and with record rains as of late, why more water? In a garden, the sound and sight of awaterfall is special. We all want to have aspecial space where we can go to be atpeace, to just “chill out,” or to share withthat special someone. And, if we build it,God’s creatures will come. Maintenance and upkeep? I have a 90/10rule for my water gardens and pondlesswaterfalls. “You should be able to enjoyyour water feature 90% of the time with 10%maintenance or labor.” How is that possible? Quite simply byusing Aquascape products out of Botavia,Illinois, I have been able to reproducenature-friendly creations that are easy toenjoy and genuinely easy to maintain. And,
by focusing on two types of water features,I have been able to adapt my waterfalls toalmost any environment. I built a waterfallin a bar/dance hall near Willis Bridge twoyears ago. The factors that play into low maintenanceare all based on having a balance withnature. Water needs to be moved with anelectric pump, contained with an EPDMliner in order not to leak, and filtered, as ifcopying the Everglades with a wetland type
filter. Secondly, the pond should look naturaland be natural. This is accomplished withbeautiful stone that makes you say, “Wow!” I have a couple of ways to keep watergardening quite simple to enjoy. First of all, aquatic plants keep the water crystal clearbecause the root systems feed off naturalnitrates, waste materials from fish and birds, and particulate matter found in the air. Thebalance of plants filtering your water featureis very important. With our extreme summertemperatures, it is very important to haveenough plants to keep your pond or waterfallin balance. Second, air-blown debris always

Magazine Alert-itis?
Interesting IndividualsMost of us are so busy ~ even over
whelmed ~ with the demands ofday-to-day living, that we just
don’t take time to read about urgent issuesand email, write, or call legislators. And it seems that lately, the fire bell hasbeen ringing incessantly ~ enough to give us“alert-itis.” Of course, that’s how “the otherside” wins, with persistent attacks that wearus down. Health freedom is a never-ending issue onmany fronts. Bio-identical hormones and thevery existence of compounding pharmaciesare under ongoing attack. Texas dieticianscontinue to lobby to license nutritional coun-seling only to them and medical doctors, while the FDA wants to classify supplements, etc., as drugs or medical devices, puttingnaturopaths, health food stores, and wellnessclinics at risk. Concerns for food safety mayput raw nuts, and fresh produce in danger ofchemical treatment or some type of pasteur-ization or irradiation. Legislation may in-crease the ability to obscure or withhold vi-tal labeling information. Organic standardscontinue to be watered down. Terminologyis tricky. What does “cage free” really mean? The mind-boggling National Animal Iden-tification System (NAIS) continues to be athreat, and the Texas Governor’s office isdoing an end run around the Trans TexasCorridors moratorium. The war against dirtycoal plants is not over. Many more impor-tant issues are vying for our time, energy, and money. Thankfully, it seems there are always thosespecial individuals who make great personalsacrifices to lead the fight against one issueor another. We certainly salute them all.
HAYC will try to do its small part, keepingthe fire bells ringing to keep you alerted andinformed. We’ve added pertinent health head-lines to our web home page. We’re increasingdynamic content. Check it out atwww.healthayc.com! And here’s to those whofight the good fight in so many arenas.
Jean Heney and I met two very interestingindividuals recently. Josh Christian is originallyfrom what we used to call Bombey. He offerscounseling services and is especially dedicatedto helping people “unbottle” anger, fear, andisolation. Years ago, in India, he abandoned thebig city life (17 million people), moved northto 20 acres of family land, and took up organicfarming. He joined with a whole community oforganic farmers and connected with a wealthyindividual in Bombey who set up a CSA (com-munity supported agriculture) co-op. He evenjoined with activists to protest a large dam thatthreatened many poor landowners. The dam wasbuilt, but the people received a much improveddeal. I’m hoping he will share these fascinatingstories with us in the future. We also met a fellow with an uncanny gift formaking horses drool. He’s an equine sports mas-sage therapist who learned to “talk horse” froman old Choctaw racehorse trainer. A thorough-bred and quarter-horse jockey for many years,Tony Houston, LMT, ESMT can now massageriders as well, connecting horse to rider in aunique way. His ability to tell trainers what’sbothering a horse quickly gets the attention ofequine professionals. Look for both Tony and Josh among our col-umnists on the new section of our website, alongwith many other new and familiar HAYC prac-titioners and product experts. Organic Guide to Plant & Pet Pests!Ingestion killers, contact killers, and repellants ~tips on products & methods, all safe & organic!
The first all-around organic pest killerAlan points to is a sprayable formulafeaturing Spinosad (Spinosyn A&D).
When the borers, bagworms, hornworms, leafminers, tent caterpillars, or spider mitesingest just a little bit of this substance, a fun-gus fills their “bellies” and they can’t eat any-more. This marvelous water-based formulacan be sprayed on fruit trees, vegetable plants, ornamentals, lawns, and even ant piles. It islisted by the Organic Materials Review Insti-tute. Spider mites need to be stopped early. Of-ten by the time their presence is recognized(usually by the web stage), too much damageis done. They suck the chlorophyll right outof a leaf. A little mottling in leaves can be anearly sign. Spray at the outset for preventionor early damage control. Insects like shade andlove to hide on the undersides of leaves. Placewhite paper under a leaf and hit the top of theleaf to shake off any mites. If you see littledots, run your finger over them. If they smearred or green, they are tiny spider mites. It is important to spray under leaves! Also
spray the root zone at the base of plants. Texasheat and dryness are common stressors to ourplants, and stressed plants attract bugs. Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) is another organicinsecticide. It will get all worms and, whetherdust or spray, it won’t harm fish, livestock, orbirds. Alan has mosquito dunks with Bt thatcan be put in livestock water troughs, ponds, old tires, and bird baths to stop mosquito re-production the safe way. (No neurotoxins!)Ask Alan about the variety of products avail-able.
Horticultural Oils These can be used when it’s 80° or under. There is a lighter, “all seasons” oil, but oilsare designed to smother eggs. Let Alan show you the different kinds of oilsand explain when it’s best to use them. Again,he has products that are 100% organic.
Contact Killers Diatomaceous Earth and pyrethrins are natu-ral contact killers. Alan has several types ofcombination products that can be used on
plants, pets, people, and personal property toget rid of fleas, ticks, lice, fire ants, and more.DE is also used alone as a wormer for dogs, cats, horses, and cows. It is full of healthy traceminerals. It is an excellent soil amendment. But always use food-grade DE. Ask an expertlike Alan to show you what to use and how todo it. Once you have the information you need,it’s easy.
Repellants Alan has cedar oil products that smell niceand don’t stain, and can be used on people, animals, plants, and furniture, repelling mos-quitoes, flies, flease, gnats, etc. Citronella oilis also an all-natural repellant and is derivedfrom the “mosquito plant.”

seems to muck up a water garden. With askimmer, air-blown debris can easily bemaintained. To keep the water from disappearing underthe rock and stone as it cascades from onelevel to the next, gaps can be filled withblack expanding foam. This foam and theshape and placement of stone manipulate thedirection the water will flow. I’m choosyabout the stones I use, even to not usingabout a third of the stone I buy for any givenjob. Thus, I can look to my store of stonesleftover from various jobs to provide thosethat are just the right shape and size to makethe current project look and work best.Stone is forever. It’s worth getting it rightthe first time. A water garden becomes a 365, 24/7enjoyment. You find yourself looking at itevery chance you get. As with an old friend, there is always something new to be learned, experienced and discovered about it. Thefirst time you watch a butterfly take a drinkof water forms a vivid memory. Watchingdragonflies, birds, and even your dog cometo take a drink just seems natural.

Neem oil is an insecticide, miticide, and afungicide. Molasses repels fire ants. Whetherdried or liquid, molasses is repugnant to ants.It is also a marvelous soil and compost ener-gizer. It stimulates beneficial organisms. Sprayor spread horticultural molasses on your com-post pile, lawn, or pasture. Hot pepper waxes (capsaicin products) aregood repellants. So is garlic spray ~ and it’salso a fungicide. Cedar bedding for dogs and mulch for plantsare naturally aromatic pest repellants, and ce-dar is a plentiful natural resource in NorthTexas.
Plentiful Natural Solutions There are so many effective organic prod-ucts today that it is really not necessary to usedangerous chemicals. Alan also reminds us that healthy soils buildhealthy plants, and healthy plants are not asattractive to bugs, and much more able to fightoff bugs, fungus, and disease. Why Are We Losing Our Minds?
Over the past several decades, Americans have witnessed astaggering increase in the prevalence of brain-deterioratingillnesses, such as Alzheimer’s and vascular dementia.
Anyone who has watched a loved one suffer with one of theseillnesses knows the heartache they can cause for patients and familymembers. Currently in America, it is estimated that 5.1 million Americanshave Alzheimer’s disease with someone developing the diseaseevery 72 seconds! It is estimated that 42% of adults over the age of85 suffer with Alzheimer’s disease. In the year 2000, there was anestimated 411,000 new cases of Alzheimer’s disease. In the year2030, it is estimated that approximately 7.7 million people will
have Alzheimer’s disease, a greater than 50% increase over thenumber currently affected. By the year 2050, is it estimated thatthere will be 959,000 new cases a year with someone developingthe disease every 33 seconds. In this article, we will explore some possible reasons that thesedementing diseases are becoming more prevalent at such a rapidrate, what to do if you or a loved one begins to develop symptoms, and some possible ways to deter, slow or even prevent the onsetand progression of these conditions.
What Is Alzheimer’s? Alzheimer’s disease is a degenerative disorder characterized bya specific set of physiological changes in the brain. There are avariety of symptoms that often present with the onset of Alzheimer’sdisease. Progressive mental deterioration occurs that interferes withthe patient’s ability to function socially and at work. As the diseaseprogresses, there is severe memory loss, particularly in short-termmemory. Other common symptoms include disorientation, dysphasia (the inability to find the right word), unpredictable moodswings, poor or weaker judgment, problems with abstract thinking, misplacing things, changes in mood or behavior, personalitychanges, and loss of initiative. In it’s final stages, Alzheimer’sdisease can cause severe confusion and disorientation, and possiblyeven hallucinations and delusions. In this final stage, patients maybecome angry and violent, or docile and passive. Other disorders exhibit symptoms that are similar to those ofAlzheimer’s disease. Vascular dementia is caused by an interruptionof blood flow to the brain. This can be caused by arteriosclerosis(hardening of the arteries) that cuts off some or all of the bloodflow to the brain, a series of minor strokes which cause death topart of the brain, an accumulation of fluid exerting pressure onparts of the brain, blood clots that block the flow of blood to thebrain, reactions to medications or combinations of medications, and a nutrient-poor diet. People with dementia caused by any ofthese things, can exhibit the same symptoms as people withAlzheimer’s disease.
What Causes Dementia? It is widely accepted that one of the causes of the symptoms ofAlzheimer’s and dementia is the failure of neurons that have beendamaged or destroyed by free radicals. One of the causes of free-radical generation is inflammation. Inflammation is increased in the body with the consumption ofcertain foods, the intake of certain medications, and other factorssuch as stress. Preventing inflammation in the body is alsoparamount in decreasing the risk factors for many other illnessessuch as cancer and arthritis. Viruses, bacteria, fungus, and parasitesalso attach to brain cells and harbor in the brain. For example,Lyme disease and Epstein Barr Virus, especially when incombination with heavy metals, intensify free-radical attachment, sometimes as much as 100 times.
High-Risk Occupations & Devices Studies have shown that there is a direct relationship betweenoccupations that expose individuals to higher levels ofelectromagnetic radiation and the risk of developing Alzheimer’sdisease. These “high-risk” occupations include electricians, machineoperators, seamstresses, welders, and many others. In today’s society with the wide-spread use of hand-held cellphones, personal computers and other electronic devices, it is aconcern that this constant exposure to electromagnetic radiationmight be at least partially responsible for the increasing prevalenceof these diseases. We as Americans live in an increasingly toxic environment.Exposure to toxic heavy metals such as aluminum and mercury isanother commonly accepted risk factor for the development ofAlzheimer’s disease. Since metals are in everything from aluminumcans, plastics, foils and dyes, to anti-perspirants and shampoos,Americans are exposed to metals more than they realize.
Aluminum and other metals can be found in high levels in somemunicipal drinking water. In our food supply, aluminum can befound in some non-dairy creamers, self-rising flours, cake mixes, and a large variety of processed foods, and mercury is also foundin dental amalgams (silver fillings) and some fresh and canned fish.
Decline in Nutritional Diet Overall, we are also seeing a marked decline in the quality of thetypical American diet. Most Americans eat a diet much too high inquick-prepared processed foods, fast foods, artificial sweeteners,

Before modifying your diet or nutritional intake and beforebeginning any exercise program, consult a licensed and experi-enced healthcare practitioner. Alzheimer’s and vascular dementia are tragic conditions that seem to be increasing at a frightening rate. Is this a curseof modern-day life? Can we do anything to prevent, slow, or improve these conditions? Some important informationfrom the naturopathic practitioners of Trinity Wellness Center.
A major contributor to neuron damage isinflammation.

food colorings and dyes, and much too low in fresh whole foodssuch as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean meats.
Prevention Is the Key! When it comes to these dementing illnesses, whether it is beforeor after the symptoms begin, prevention is key. We can all do thingsthroughout our lives that lower our risks of developing thesediseases. If we, or someone we love, start to develop symptoms, nomatter how old they are, it is even more important that they doeverything possible to prevent the disease from progressing. Eating a healthy diet, one that is high in natural, whole foodssuch as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean meats (especially fish),and nuts and seeds is a very important factor in preventing thesediseases. Whole grains contain B vitamins that are extremelyimportant for a variety of reasons for the health of the nervoussystem. Nuts and seeds contain calcium and magnesium, mineralsthat also support nervous system health. Essential fatty acids, particularly omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids are also veryimportant for supporting nervous system health. Omega-3 fatty acidsare found in foods such as fish and flaxseed oils, while omega-6acids are found in substances such as Evening Primrose oil, Borageoil, and Black Current oil. Anti-oxidants, found in many fresh fruitsand vegetable as well as a variety of other foods, are known todecrease free-radical production in the body, lowering risk factorsfor a variety of health concerns including Alzheimer’s disease anddementia. In addition to including these foods, excluding certain foods canalso play an important role in preventing these diseases. Arachidonicacid, a substance found in meats (especially red meat), meat
products, and eggs, increases inflammation, increasing the risk ofAlzheimer’s disease. While these foods should not be completelyeliminated from the diet, they should be eaten in moderation. Inaddition to increasing inflammation in the body, refined sugars alsodeplete the body of its supplies of B vitamins and magnesium, whichare both crucial nutrients for mental function. Refined sugars accelerate brain aging! The average Americaneats 135-200 lbs. of sugar, 8 lbs. of salt, and 14 lbs. of chemicaladditives each year! Artificial sweeteners such as aspartame andsplenda are neurotoxins that have a wide variety of negative effectson the nervous system, especially the brain. Many other foodadditives such as coloring and dyes can also be very toxic to thenervous system.
Common Medication & Shot Risks? Certain medications or combinations of medications should alsobe avoided. Acetaminophen (the main ingredient in Tylenol) hasbeen shown to decrease glutathione production. Glutathione is oneof the primary brain anti-oxidants, so its deficiency can lead to anincrease in free radicals in the brain, which is thought to be one ofthe leading causes of dementing illness. Many other medicationscommonly used today interfere with our body’s ability to metabolizevitamins, minerals, and other valuable substances. There is also recent research that indicates that people who getflu shots on a regular basis have an increased risk of developing
Alzheimer’s and dementia. It is important to weigh the pros andcons of these vaccines before coming to an informed decision aboutwhether or not to get them for yourselves or your children. As mentioned earlier, we live in a very toxic society. From thefood we eat and the water we drink, to the air we breathe, we live ina polluted, toxic environment. The average human body containstraces of over 400 synthetic chemicals. A whopping 3200 tons ofdye is added to food every year. It is important that, wheneverpossible, we avoid these toxins. We can do this by buying clean, organic foods, drinking filtered water, and using air purifiers.
Detox the Body & the Brain! Even doing all of these things, we are still exposed to more toxinsthan our bodies can handle. When this occurs, our bodies can eithereliminate the toxins or store them. The ones that we cannot eliminateare often stored in the brain, building up a large toxic load over thecourse of a lifetime. Detoxifying the body on a regular basis is veryimportant for assisting the body in ridding itself of these damagingsubstances and lowering our risk of Alzheimer’s disease anddementia.
Exercise! Physical & Mental! Exercise significantly increases the density of the blood vesselsin the brain, improving their integrity as well as improving bloodflow. Nutrients are carried to the brain in the blood, so blood flowis very important. Exercise also acts to pump cerebrospinal fluid, which coats the brain and spinal cord, providing it with the nutrientsit needs. Studies have shown that people who engage in regular

When I was a kid, my dad bought an old canoe for us touse on the river close to our home. It was an old, heavycanoe, but it was the means for my dad and I to enjoy
days on the river. Those memories have been with me since then. When swapping paddling stories with friends, those days on theAllegheny River in Pennsylvania always come up. I recall thelaughter, the thrills we had running the river, and the smile on mydad’s face when he saw how much fun I was having. I never reallythought about that until recently. Since I live so far away from my family, I don’t get the opportunityto spend much time with them now. That’s why it was a specialtreat when my dad came down here for a visit. It was his 60th birthdaypresent. During his visit, I took him kayaking in Hagerman WildlifeRefuge. I wasn’t sure how the trip would go since he hasn’t beenpaddling for a number of years. Once we launched the kayak andheaded up the creek, those old feelings came back. It felt like wewere on the Allegheny again. We had a wonderful time paddling and watching the wildlife alongthe way. We reminisced about our past trips we used to take andlaughed about the time we broadsided a large rock. My dad jumped
out of the canoe expecting deep water only to find the water wasabout two feet deep. I can still see the expression that was on hisface. On the drive home, we talked about our day of paddling and howmuch we both enjoyed it. Seeing the smile on his face, I understandwhat he must have felt all those years ago. I had a lot of fun thatday, but what made that day special was spending it with my dad.My smile was there because of him. Kayaking and canoeing are wonderful ways to get out for exercise, enjoy the environment and wildlife, or simply share a greatexperience with someone you care about. When the day is over, you will always have those memories to cherish. I feel very fortunate to have shared another paddling experiencewith my dad. I will always have the memories of our trips when Iwas young, but now I have another one, one that I will appreciateand truly hold dear to me for a long time to come. Stop by Adrenaline in downtown Denison sometime and shareone of your paddling stories with us. Our experiences in life arewhat make us who we are. I’ll see you on the water.

physical activity have a lower risk of developing both Alzheimer’sdisease and dementia. The more the body moves, the more bloodflow and cerebrospinal flow is improved. Even something as simpleas walking can help improve the blood flow to the brain. Mental stimulation is also important. An enriched environmentis one that provides healthy nervous system stimulation andincreased social interactions. These things stimulate thedevelopment of neurons (nerve cells) in the brain. Puzzles, mindteasers, and stimulating conversation can keep the mind alert andactive at any age. The increase in the prevalence of Alzheimer’s and dementia inAmerica is alarming. It is very important that we all take thenecessary steps to decrease our risk of suffering from thesedebilitating illnesses. Any illness can be slowed or even reversed (God-willing) if youdo two things: 1) remove the burdens and, 2) give the body what itneeds. If you or anyone in your family starts to develop any of thesymptoms discussed above, it is important that you contact a health-care practitioner as soon as possible. Although medical doctors may diagnose these conditions andsupport these patients medically, especially for crisis management, naturopathic and nutritional support is essential to optimizestabilization and recovery potential. There are many vitamins,
minerals, and herbs that have been shown to lower the risk or slowthe progression of these brain-deteriorating illnesses. Chiropractic adjustments are also a key factor in decreasing therisk of these illnesses as well as preventing their progression.Chiropractic adjustments improve blood flow to the brain andimprove the overall health of the nervous system. Choose a wellness-oriented or neurology-certified chiropractor and a certified clinicalnutritionist or naturopathic physician for adjunctive care. Whetheryou (or someone you love) have been diagnosed with one of theseillnesses or you are young and healthy and are simply trying todecrease your risk of developing these diseases, employing themeasures mentioned above will give you the best possibleopportunity to live a long, healthy, mentally sharp life.

Have you ever seen a horse drool? It is so cool. He’ll standthere with his ears drooped to the sides, eyelids half closed, lower lip hanging down, and his back leg cocked. We call
it “being in the zone.” Suddenly, you notice that there’s this longstrand of slobber hanging down his chin. Utterly relaxed, the horseutters a contented sigh. I see this sight often, and it is one of the greatest pleasures of mylife. I love making horses drool. I am an equine sports massagetherapist. It is my job to come in and do sports massage on thehorses that carry their human companions so faithfully in shows, performance events, cross-country trail rides, and around the ranch.I have the unique privilege of being thought of as “that fix-it guy”by the horses themselves ~ once they get to know me, and what Ican do for them, even the most ornery of equines will utter nickersof welcome when they hear me coming. A longtime horseman myself (I was a jockey for ten years), I wasastonished and elated, as I pursued my training in equine sportsmassage, to learn that the vast majority of the “mean,” “ornery,”and “uncooperative” horses I’d known in the past probably weren’ttruly misfits of personality, but were simply in pain due tounaddressed muscular stress from their day-to-day training
programs. I found myselfwhispering “Yes! That’sprobably why so-and-soacted the way he didunder saddle!” morethan once during mytraining.

It pleases me that I can now offer specific help where the horsesneed it the most. Where muscles are tight or sore, the creature as awhole cannot move freely. Dear friend,
Confessions are tough. Real tough. But, sometimes aconfession can set the record straight, and I want to givecredit where credit is due. Before I talk about my confes-sion, though, let me say a few other things first. Let mestart by explaining the photo in this letter. I’m the one inthe middle and that’s my husband beside me. Let me tellyou my story.
Years ago something happened to me that changed mylife forever.
“I remember like it was yesterday, although I was just inhigh school at the time. It was the day I got hired to workfor this incredible man. The more we talk and the more Ilearn about him, the more I get interested in what he tellsme. He tells me how excited he is to go to work everydayand how passionate he is about his job. He loves seeingkids, families and all kinds of people come to see him. And, that’s not all…
You see, this incredible man is a doctor, but not just anydoctor. He tells me that his type of doctor has a very dif-ferent way of looking at health. They understand that thebody knows how to heal itself, and because of that thesedoctors do not use drugs or surgery at all. But, there’smore…
He tells me stories about kids that were really sick, andgot help nowhere else, getting well. He tells me stories ofpeople with terrible migraines that get well. He talksabout people crawling in and walking out. I can tell hemakes a positive impact on their lives and that they alllove him for the miracles they see happening. By theway, this amazing doctor is a Chiropractor.
After hearing my new boss’ story I am fascinated andimpressed. It was soon after that I begin to witness all ofthese wonderful testimonies of his patients. I am sotouched by what chiropractic has done for these patientsthat I eventually decide to go to chiropractic schoolmyself. Now, I, too, am a chiropractor. And, you knowwhat? I’ve never looked back; it was the best thing thatI’ve ever done. I have the best job in the world. And,that’s how it happened!”
Now for Michael and Alaina, they are twins and wereborn at 26 1/2 weeks and spent their first 3 1/2 years of lifein and out of the hospital. They were taking medicationsthree times a day everyday! Their parents were very tiredof always being in the pediatricians office taking medica-tions and thought that there had to be a better way. That’swhen they decided to try chiropractic. Alaina sufferedfrom attention deficit tendencies, asthma and was takingmedications regularly. After getting adjusted not only hasshe been able to focus better and doesn’t struggle like sheused to, but her asthma is no longer an issue and is off ofall her medications! Michael also struggled with asthmaand motor development issues. He was born with emphy-sema, a collapsed lung and suffered from a misaligned ribcage. After getting regular chiropractic adjustments, he is
off all of his medications, including his steroids for hisasthma and has grown 3 inches in a year and a half. Hismotor development problems continue to improve. Theyare now both happy and healthy and not riddled withbeing sick and taking medications all the time! Theirmom, Shannon also states that “chiropractic has also ben-efited us financially by saving us money! We no longerspend $400 a month on prescription medications. If thetwins do get sick it never lasts long and is not as severe, they recover much faster and don’t have to take all thosemedications.”
It’s strange how life is, because now children come to seeme for asthma and childhood illnesses. Also they come tome with their headaches, migraines, chronic pain, neckpain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness inlimbs, athletic injuries, just to name a few.
Several times a day patients thank me for helping themwith their health problems. But I can’t really take thecredit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone ofanything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjust-ment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds byhealing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simpleas that!
Being a chiropractor can be tough, because there’s a hostof so-called experts out there. They tell people a lot ofthings that are just plain ridiculous about my profession. But the studies speak for themselves, like the Virginiastudy that showed that over 90% of patients who saw achiropractor were satisfied with their results. That’s justincredible!
Forty-eight million Americans no longer have healthinsurance, and those who do have found that their bene-fits are reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in.Many people find that they actually save money on theirhealth care expenses by seeing a chiropractor. Anotherway to save…studies show that chiropractic may doubleyour immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. Theimmune system fights colds, the flu, and other sickness-es. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. This is especially important if you are self-employed.
And an entire week of care in my office may cost whatyou could pay for one visit elsewhere. You Benefit from an Amazing Offer - Look, it should-n’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. Youare going to write a check to someone for your health careexpenses, you may as well write one for a lesser amountfor chiropractic. When you bring in this article (by July27, 2006) you will receive our entire new patient exam for$37 out of pocket. That’s with x-rays, computerizedscan….the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost youup to $250 elsewhere. And, further care is very affordableand you’ll be happy to know that We have affordablefamily plans and we file insurance. You see I’m not try-ing to seduce you to come see me with this low start upfee, then to only make it up with high fees after that.Further care is very important to consider when makingyour choice of doctor. High costs can add up veryquickly.
Great care at a great fee…Please, I hope that there’s nomisunderstanding about quality of care just because Ihave a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee.And best of all our office has one of the only computer-ized adjusting machines in the area. This computer canshow you your improvements immediately on the screen.Your spine gets adjusted without hearing any “cracking”sound. It’s awesome. My qualifications…I did my undergraduate studies inKinesiology and Health Sciences in Ontario, Canada. I’ma graduate of Parker Chiropractic College from right herein Dallas and have advanced training in prenatal and pedi-atric care. My husband and I practiced in SouthernCalifornia seeing thousands of patients and then wemoved our practice to Flower Mound over two years ago. We’ve been entrusted to take care of tiny babies to somemovie stars that you may know. Abundant Life Health Foods • Lewisville • 972-221-1210Over 40 years of experience with the foundations ofhealth ~ cleansing and nutrition ~ have made Peggy Millsan invaluable resource for this region. See her article onthe most effective natural remedies for parasites in usand our animals in Issue 5 which is available on line.
Lets talk about Arthritis. Arthritis is defined as inflammationand soreness of joints, usually accompanied by pain andchanges in structure. The two main types are Osteo-Arthritis
and Rheumatoid Arthritis. Osteo-Arthritis develops as a result ofthe constant wearing away of the cartilage in the joint. Symptomsare body stiffness and pain in the joints during damp weather, inthe morning, or after a heavy exercise. Diet plays a big part in both types. You should get rid of “ALL”refined sweets, caffeine, pork, carbonated drinks, foods that turnto sugar, fried foods, tap water, red meat, any foods that cause us tobe over acid. If I had this problem, I would drink from one to threecups of Aloe Vera Juice by sipping on it all day, take enzymes withmeals, acidophlius at least 2 times a day, Bromelain on an emptystomach for inflammation, and I would use Phenocane for pain. Iwould also cleanse, beginning with the colon, liver, lymph, andblood, and exercise on a mini-trampoline 20 minutes two times aday. There are formulas for joints that really seem to work, likeyucca. This is due to the plant’s high content of steroid saponins, which are precursors to cortisone without all the terrible sideeffects. Some feel that the yucca saponins improve the body’s abilityto produce its own cortisone by supplying materials needed to be
manufactured in the adrenalglands. We abuse our glandularsystems by our diet. Our bodies aremade up of cells. Our cells are alsoabused by our diet. I encourage

everyone who has not read the book “Some Gold Nuggets inNutrition” by Dr. Mary Ruth Swope to do so. It is only 58 pagesand they are packed with much information and easy to read. (Getthe book at Abundant Life!) Sugar can cause arthritis as it upsets the minerals in thebody. Rheumatoid Arthritis is linked to diet. In this disease, theimmune system of the body attacks its own tissue as foreignsubstances. It is called an auto-immune disease. Foods that producean alkaline, as opposed to acid, pH seem to bring improvement inhealth. Deleting sugar, in all forms, always brings improvement inthe joints. Eliminating caffeine from all sources often bringsrelief. Omega-3 fatty acids in fish oils, and raw juices, especiallycarrot juice with celery and spinach, are wonderful. The bottomline: Sick cells can be changed into healthy cells through goodnutrition. There are many nutritional aids which help strengthen the bodyin its fight against arthritis. Goals are to:• Clean out wastes and toxins that have accumulated in the body• Improve digestion• Feed the body nutritious foods and purified water (chlorineaggravates arthritis) so it will have good raw materials to workwith in its fight to get well. We have a herbal calcium that I think iswonderful to help. Take good care of yourbody, because no one else will. Until nexttime ~ Be Healthy!

Bob stated that, for a long time, his back and neck werebecoming more achy and stiff. “I just can’t do the things Iused to do,” he complained. “I’m in too much pain.”
I asked Bob, “Do you feel like you have rusting hinges?” Hereplied, “That is exactly how I am feeling! I’m too young to feelthis old!” I then explained that certain types of arthritis could result froman unhealthy joint, perhaps from an old injury that was neverproperly treated and corrected. When a joint is injured, it no longermoves properly and can result in a pinched nerve, a decrease inmotion, and pain, swelling and weakness. This can be described as having a hinge that gets stuck out ofposition and loses its proper motion. Over time, that hinge beginsto rust (like arthritis in an unhealthy joint). Just like a rusty hinge,a joint that remains stuck for an extended period of time cancompletely fuse together and cause permanent damage. My patient then replied, “That makes perfect sense!” After properdiagnosis and beginning our recommended treatment plan, he beganto feel relief and was on his way to a complete recovery. There are other forms of arthritis such as rheumatoid, which canoften affect multiple joints and can be linked to toxicity in the body,pH imbalance, digestive disorders, and/or emotional stress. Through regular chiropractic care, exercise, nutrition, andcoaching, you can keep your joints healthy and free of arthritis.Even when arthritis is present, proper treatment can turn anunhealthy arthritic joint into a healthy, free-moving joint. Properdiagnosis is the key to quick recovery, so you can get back to ahealthy and active lifestyle.

Why do we seek healthcare? For most people, it is becausesomething has gone wrong in our bodies and our brainhas gotten that message.
Actually, our bodies attempt to communicate a lot more than wemay realize! For example, everyone knows what “hungry” feelslike and what to do about it. It’s the same for “thirsty”, “sleepy”,“tired,” etc. Underlying and driving all these transmissions fromthe body to the brain is the most powerful and constant message ofall: Survive! Most of what we do from a natural, unconsciousmotivation is done to promote our survival. When somethinghappens that potentially threatens our survival, our brain ischallenged to devise and execute strategies to neutralize the threat. That’s really why we seek healthcare.
Modern Medicine and Capitalism Respond As the industrialization of Western Civilizations gatheredmomentum around the turn of the 20th century, capitalism emergedas the most successful system for production of wealth andprosperity. The point of this article is not to make an argumentagainst our system of commerce. No one of sound mind could orshould stand in opposition to peace and prosperity. But, as with allhuman endeavors, there are flaws in our systemic pursuits ~ flawswhich need to be re-examined and adjusted. Healthcare is one aspect of our society that is clearly in desperateneed of a major overhaul. Insurance coverage grabs all the attentionthrough the mass media, but core-level dysfunctions are the realproblem. In economic terms, every time someone is diagnosed with aserious disease, gross domestic product (GDP) goes up and lots ofmoney will change hands. Every time someone chooses to consumefood or products, which poison the body, GDP goes up. Every time one person purchases a natural or less-toxic productor food, or engages a naturopathic healthcare professional, GDPalso goes up, but at a much slower rate and far less volume than theaforementioned modes. It is cheaper to build health than to fightsickness. In other words, there is far more money to be made fromsickness than from wellness.
Democracy!! Really? Most of us think of democracy as the right to vote during publicelections for the candidate or party of our choice. But it is oureconomic activity that sends the most immediate message to thepowers that be. The real democracy, which we all participate inevery day of our lives, is called “The Free Market”. If you bought food from your local grocer that is labeled “organic”or “pesticide and herbicide free,” congratulations, you just votedin favor of a cleaner, more nutritious, and less-toxic food supply. Ifyou asked the manager of your favorite store to please stock moreof such products, thank you, you just sent a message that you areconcerned about what you put in or on your body and, with enoughvotes, the suppliers of the free market will respond to your demands. If you chose to engage your local Chiropractor to address possiblespinal problems, or your local soft-tissue specialist for possible
neuromuscular problems, or your localnaturopathic technician in response to

Healthcare, Democracy, The Healer,...and Us“Give me two weeks,” says naturopath Larry Mayo, “to get your attention,” on the path ofdiscovering your body’s individualized needs and inherent ability to heal itself when properlysupported. Here, Larry challenges us to think clearly about today’s healthcare system and ourresponsibility to truly care for our health.
internal and/or nutritional malfunctions, congratulations, you justvoted to promote the required overhaul of our healthcare system. You just voted to begin answering Dr. Juanee Surprise’s questionfrom the previous issue: Why not try the natural way first? It isclearly time for some changes. “Thy food shall be thy medicineand thy medicine shall be thy food.” ~ Hippocrates
The Healer An eight-year-old girl, riding her bicycle down the sidewalk, swerves, crashes to the ground, and her left leg, just above the ankle, shatters in several places. Doctors perform emergency surgery, stabilizing the broken bone with steel plates and pins. Months later, the bones in her leg have healed very well. To be sure, the medical professionals and facilities were necessaryfor a positive outcome within this story. But, who really “healed”the bones in the child’s leg? The answer is, of course, her ownbody rebuilt the damaged structures in her injured limb. Themechanisms in play that conducted the restructuring within her bodyare inherent within all of us. So it is with all of our healthcarechallenges on a personal level. We may, on occasion, need assistanceand/or guidance on a path toward better and sustainable health, butthe point to take is that, ultimately, we must actively do whateverwe can to promote our own body’s ability to heal. There are onlytwo true healers in the universe: Yourself and Your Creator.
…And Us So, here we are in the Land of Liberty and Opportunity, thoughour liberties are at some degree of risk these days. The forces oflarge corporations in collusion with some aspects of governmentstrive daily to control our thoughts and options concerning the careand feeding of our very own bodies. It is as if the so-called “elites”of our nation have decided that our bodies and our health arecommodities which we must purchase from them. In my personalopinion, this body and the life I live within it is a gift from a muchhigher and more benevolent power than exists anywhere on thisplanet. As for opportunity, as precious as it is, it is only that; it’s a chance, not a guarantee. It exists hand in hand with responsibility, forourselves, for our environment (both internal and external), andfor our fellow beings. There it is again, the “R” word. It sometimesseems that we must all eat responsibility pie for breakfast everyday and it gets heavier all the time. However, I’ve learned somethingalong my way that I feel is very important and even comforting:The more I search, the more I learn. The more I learn, the lightermy responsibilities become. So here we are in America and we’ve once again come full circle. Our health, the most precious thing one could ever have, is up tous. It’s up to you and I and all those we touch. Let us search. Let uslearn. And let us choose wisely.

I had my first Thermography Centertesting three years ago. I had never heardof it, and knew nothing about it, when
my wife Carol told me she wanted to getone done. However, she kept putting it offweek after week. I started to get on her caseabout not going. She told me if I would go with her andget one done on myself, she would go. Myfirst thought was, “No way.” And I don’tneed to spend the money for something Idon’t need. And to tell you the truth, I was alittle intimidated about it. After thinkingseriously about her not going, I agreed. The bottom line to this story is thethermograpy test found trouble in my colonarea. My doctor told me to get acolonoscopy. When I talked to the doctor doing thecolonoscopy, he asked why I wanted toget one. After I told him about thethermography results, he laughted and said,“I have no faith in that kind of scanning andthere is probably nothing wrong with you.” Two weeks later I had the colonoscopydone. I was told there were several largepolyps as big as my thumb and a LOT ofsmall ones. He removed all of them andfound several of the large ones were pre-cancerous. Needless to say I am a BIG believer nowin having a Thermography Center test atleast once a year. I have had one each yearfor the last 3 years and I recommend it toeveryone I talk to, that they do the same. You never know. Thanks to Dr. AnnColeman for recommending theThermography Center to my wife.

We have a number of patients whomay have started regularadjustments in our office with
some hesitation, but after reaping the healthbenefits, they are chiropractic advocates! They began to refer more family membersto our office and they too have experiencedthe improvements that a chiropracticlifestyle can bring. Shirley Reynolds, an initially skepticalmother, recently said, “Well, Dr. Steve is ourprimary health provider.” In theirintroductory consultation, Dr. Steve hadcalled attention to the older daughter’s badlymisaligned neck, the younger daughter’sbladder/urinary tract, and everyone’s sinusproblems. He was unaware of the correlatinghistories of headaches, UTIs, and allergies.Shirley later said, “This was a score for me,and so we decided to follow Stone Creek’srecommendations. It seemed a little frequentto me in the beginning, but I didn’tunderstand (at that time) that chiropracticis a way of life! We needed to correct theproblem, not just ‘fix it when you think youneed it.’ Now I want everyone to have thisin their life!” The allergy medications are now a thingof the past and the girls’ problems are undercontrol. Dad is now receiving regular care.Shirley told a friend that, “I should be onthe once-a-week maintenance schedule, butI prefer to go twice a week because I justfeel better.” She drives from Denton toFlower Mound, and has referred a numberof other families to SCFC for regularchiropractic care. (And all through HealthAround Your Corner Magazine.) The kidstalk to their friends with allergies: and say“You need to see Dr. Steve about that.” Recently, a patient began care who is anorganic farmer who drives over an hour toget here. She was convinced to come for aconsultation by reading about Stone Creekin HAYC. By seeing the progress of othersand just how much can be achieved, she wasconvinced of the efficacy of the correctivecare approach. She had been to several otherchiropractors in the past.
A Healthy Nervous System The nervous system is the master system
of the body. It controls all your other systemsand is protected by your spine. You and yourfamily all need to maintain maximumhealthy alignment, motion, systemcommunication, and energy flow.Chiropractic is not just for occasionalinjuries. It is a lifestyle wellness tool to helpprevent illness and promote overall vibranthealth. All your organs and cells are affectedby your structural integrity and mobility. Everyday activities and stress (and thosesummer sports) can cause spinalmisalignments, joint-motion reduction, andnervous-system blockages. Regular check-ups and “tune-ups” are as important to thebody as they are to a car, and can helpprevent and treat many ailments such asallergies and asthma. Stone Creek uses anumber of gentle adjustment techniquesappropriate for the whole family.
Prevention, Maintenance, &Affordable Care Let’s talk more about keeping things incheck before a problem occurs. Don’t waitfor a problem or pain first. Get a spinalcheck-up to make sure that everything is inproper alignment. Being healthy isn’t justabout how you feel, it’s about how you arefunctioning. A lot of people feel fine, buthave silent health problems going on insidetheir body that they aren’t even aware of. Alot of problems can be prevented throughearly detection and proper care. It’s mucheasier to “prevent and maintain” that it is to“fix.” Chiropractic focuses on wellness
naturally! Common results of regularchiropractic care for wellness are fewervisits to the doctor, less medication (overthe counter and prescription), and improvedoverall health. We offer affordable care thatmakes getting regular chiropractic care costeffective for the whole family. It is part ofour mission to help as many families aspossible.
Free Community Education Another part of our mission is to helpeducate our community in wellness andhealthy lifestyle choices. I speak regularlyon topics such as allergies and asthma, arthritis, nutritional food andsupplementation, losing weight naturally, and more. Our talks and dinners are free! Theyrequire only a reservation and are open toanyone. So, come see us! Call 972-874-7554today to schedule your no-charge-out-of-pocket exam and x-rays!

Q When I visit the dentist, how do I know if I have decay?
A For many years, the standard fordetecting decay in a tooth was thedental x-ray. Though accurate,
there were some concerns. Of greatestconcern was the exposure to radiation. Asecond concern is that the decay needs tobe in an advanced stage before it is largeenough to be detected on an x-ray. Thatmeant that the decay may have been presentfor quite some time before it was detected.Current technology is utilizing dental lasersto detect decay in its earliest stages, beforeit is detected on an x-ray. That way, vitaland important tooth structure is conserved, reducing the need for more invasiveprocedures such as crowns and root canals.
Q My dentist told me that I have fivecavities to be filled. Is there anyway to fix them without being
numb?
A Yes. Now it is possible to get dental fillings without having to be “numbed” or use needles. In our
office, we utilize “air abrasion” which is alsoreferred to as “drill-less” dentistry. It worksby using air pressure to aim “sand-like”particles at your tooth, gently spraying awaydecay.
Q If I have a very large filling in my tooth that is cracked, decayed, or broken, is there a better way to fix
my tooth other than a cap (crown)?
Healthier, Safer, More Comfortable Dental Techniques, WithPrettier Results!
A Yes. Traditional dentistry utilizes the process of crowns (caps) to fix large areas of decay or large
defective fillings. The disadvantage of theseprocedures is that they require the dentistto grind your tooth down to a tiny peg, whichis very aggressive and traumatic to yourtooth. Current technology is awesome! Youcan now fix your tooth with veryconservative, longer lasting tooth colored“inlays and onlays.” These restorations areterrific in that they do not grind your toothdown to a peg, actually strengthen your
tooth, and keep most of your natural toothstructure. And as an added feature, they arevirtually “invisible” to the naked eye, unlikethe porcelain crowns found currently intraditional dentistry.

Nothing could be more important thanproviding optimal nutrition to yourbaby during pregnancy. Starting
with a good quality multi-vitamin, whichcontains all the active forms of the B-vitamins, is essential.
Activated Vitamins Essential Most vitamin producers do not utilize theactivated forms of the B-vitamins becausethey typically have a shorter life. Forexample, the Thorne brand containspyridoxial-5-phosphate (p-5-p), which isthe form of B6 which the body uses;however most other brands utilizesome form of pyridoxine. If thisunactivated form cannot beconverted by the body, then thebody does not have enough B6. Allof us are familiar with folic acid andits value to the fetus, especiallyduring the first few weeks afterconception; however this too is anunactivated form of B9. B9 has severalactivated forms, one of which is folinic acid.
Morning Sickness & B6 It is important to note that, duringpregnancy, the baby gets nutritional priorityover the mother, and vice versa once thebaby is born. A mother’s morning nauseaand sickness when pregnant result from hergiving up her B6 to the baby, and therefore
her levels decrease. Thus, she is unable toproduce the stomach acid she needs, becausestomach acid production requires B6,magnesium and zinc. As a result, bile fromthe gallbladder migrates into the stomach andcauses the burning and nausea symptoms.Obviously, the mother needs to increase herp-5-p. Ginger tea or peppermint tea can alsobe helpful to mom as well.
Boosting Baby’s Brain Power Numerous nutrients are of value tothe fetus. My short list would include
zinc, copper, iron, selenium, fattyacids, all the activated B-vitamins andanother B-vitamin family nutrientcalled choline. Drs. Williams andMerek of Columbia University didresearch on rats that greatlysupport the supplementation of
choline. The key timing ofsupplementation of cholineappears to be the first 12-16weeks pre-natally and the first 3
months after the baby is born. Dueto the fact that choline is tied toanother mineral in supplementform, it is optimal to take 1200 mg.daily. Investing a small amount of moneyin choline now, could prevent a lot ofexpenses and issues with your child’slearning later in life. It is the first 12-16
Optimal Pre-Natal Nutrition for Mom and BabyBoost Your Child’s Brain Power! Chuck Tillotson, DC, explains the advantages ofspecific nutrients at crucial times during pregnancy and early child development.
weeks of development which are keybecause the brain and nervous system areformed at this time. The choline, in the formof phosphatidyl-choline, is a major buildingblock of neuronal membranes in forming thenerve and the brain. It’s also an importantprecursor of acetylcholine - a neuro-transmitter known to be important inmemory. By incorporating more choline through
diet and supplementation, it may bepossible to permanently enhance memory, and therefore intelligence potential, of the
baby during development in the womband in the first few months of life.Mothers may want to rethink the useof infant formula, as it is far lowerin choline content (~5 mg) than
breast milk. The decision not to breastfeed or to supplement could have
long-reaching effects, as it appears thatcholine is of “critical importance in
memory development, the determinationof adult memory capacity, and resistance toage-related memory impairments.”
Through the ages different materialshave been used to make containersto hold and transport water, ranging
from wood to silver. The most toxic of thosematerials has been lead (used in pipes) andthe most inert, glass. Because of the cost, weight, and safety hazard of glass and theworkability of plastic, glass is seldom used.(We have actually seen holes burned intocar seats from the sun shining through glasswater bottles). In a society where cancer is the number-one feared sickness, the top questionconcerning health is: What is it that causesus to have so much cancer in our affluentsociety? Everything becomes suspect:
plastic; lack of minerals; animal fat;chemicals; chemically-changed, foods;additives; and lack of exercise can all besited as culprits. Possibly they all play apart in why we Americans have so muchcancer and so many other degenerativediseases. Could it be though, the answer to theproblem is in the statement, “Moderation inall things?” The good God made our bodiesso as to be able to tolerate a great deal ofabuse and poison. The kidneys and liverwork full time to remove the impurities fromthe body, but if the body gets too much and/or too long an exposure to something, thereare visible reactions.
For our discussion here we will considerthe effects of plastic on water. As there is adifference in the types of plastics, in theirchemical makeup and whether or not theygive off chemicals, one needs to considereach one individually. Each chemical has apossible set of reactions. When consideringthe moderate use of plastics it is best not toput all the plastics together because it wouldmisrepresent the exposure since each plasticis so different in its possible problems.....

by Smart Idemudia, MD, PhDOral and Intravenous C ~ Dr. Idemudia explains the differences indose, absorption, effectiveness, and application for normal healthmaintenance or serious conditions like cancer.
A lot has been written about theeffectiveness of vitamin C in healthand disease. Vitamin C is effective
in maintaining health as well as in treatingvarious disease states, including cancer. The effectiveness of this vitamin in cancerwas demonstrated more than 60 years agoby Dr. Frederick Klenner, who wrote about27 papers on vitamin C from the 1940’s tothe 1970’s. Later, Dr. Linus Pauling alsoshowed the effectiveness of this vitamin inmany disease states including cancer. However, there has been a systematicpolitical and economic bias against thisvitamin and, every now and then, a “study”would come out to say that this vitamin isnot effective in preventing or amelioratingthe ravages of disease. On the contrary, whenone searches the literature, one would findthat there is a mounting and impressive body
of evidence showing the importance of thisvitamin in many medical conditions. Morethan 90 epidemiologic studies(1) havelooked into the effectiveness of vitamin Cand vitamin-C-rich foods in cancerprevention.
Many Functions Vitamin C plays an important role invarious biological functions. Vitamin C iswell-known as an antioxidant. However, ithas many other functions in the body. It is apowerful free-radical scavenger and a goodchelating agent of heavy metals and otherenvironmental toxicants. Other functions ofvitamin C include the synthesis of hormones, neurotransmitters and other substances inthe body. It functions to boost the immunesystem. Vitamin C exhibits anti-cancer properties
in several ways:1) It scavenges cancer-causing free radicals.2) It regenerates active Vitamin E in lipidmembranes.3) It enhances IgA, IgG, and IgM antibodylevels.4) It neutralizes cancer-causing agents likenitrites and nitrosamines.5) It modulates interferon synthesis.6) It possesses anti-viral and anti-bacterialproperties and thereby able to prevent andtreat cancers of bacterial or viral origin.7) It increases synthesis of ProstaglandinsPGE1, which is anti-inflammatory andinhibits synthesis of PGE2.8) It enhances lymphocytic function as wellas the rapid mobilization of phagocytes.

In the early days of vitamin C research, Dr Klenner gave bothoral and intravenous vitamin C to a wide range of patients with amyriad of medical problems from bacterial and viral infections tocancer. His results were amazing. Decades later, the double Nobel Laureate, Dr. Linus Pauling, alsostudied and used vitamin C, both in oral and IV forms, in a varietyof medical conditions. His results were equally impressive. Dr.Gladys Block of the University of California did an analysis of 90epidemiological studies which looked at vitamin C or vitamin-C-rich foods(1). The vast majority of these studies found statisticallysignificant protective effect. There was strong evidence forprotection against cancers of the oral cavity, esophagus, stomach, and pancreas. These are particularly deadly cancers with extremelypoor prognosis, especially pancreatic cancer. There wassubstantially positive effect against breast, cervical and rectal
cancers in that analysis. Furthermore, there was strong evidence forprotection against lung cancer, bladder, prostate, and colorectal cancers. Thisis a very impressive record for thisvitamin.
Improper Dosing ~ Oral vs. IV Some of the controversy about theeffectiveness of this vitamin comes asa result of improper dosing. It has beenknown that, while orally administered

products and then adding preservatives that speed up the agingof the skin? What if there was a way to have a water-based(preservative free) product now, that would have a long shelflife?” The answer: “If there was a product like that, you wouldhave the Holy Grail !!”

Ask anyone what they fear most aboutold age and the response will manytimes be “reduced mental capacity,”
says Anne Hill, manager of Peak Nutrition. Can we really do anything to help guard ourbrain neurotransmitters? Most everyone isfamiliar with Gingko Biloba for memoryhelp, but many do not know that there areother helps for boosting brain power. Listed at the top as the most importantneurotransmitter involved in memory andlearning is acetylcholine(Dr. P. Balch). We cantake precursors of thissubstance to promotehealthy stores in our bodyof acetylcholine, or wecan help to deter the lossof it. Dr. Balch’s Prescriptionfor Nutritional Healingsays that, “One reasonmany people suffer from
memory loss is an insufficient supply ofnecessary nutrients (especially the Bvitamins and amino acids) to the brain.” Shealso states that the brain can becomemalnourished because the blood has toomuch cholesterol and triglycerides, whichdo not allow nutrients to pass through to thebrain.” No doubt there are many factors inmemory loss, including free-radical damagefrom drugs, pesticides, herbicides, and othertoxins in our environment. These are some good brain foods availablefrom Peak Nutrition:Lecithin ~ contains phosphatidylcholineand inositol. Our brain is said to be madeup of 30% lecithin. The myelin sheaths thatline our brain, spine, and nerves are mostlycomposed of lecithin.B12 ~ lack of B-12 can lead to dementia, especially in the elderly.B vitamin, pantothenic acid ~ helps totransport choline to the neuro-transmitteracetylcholine.DHA ~ a most prominent essential fatty acidin the brain ~ Omega 3’s.Phosphatidylserine ~ a key help forimproving and protecting memory. Peak has
a product with a specialbond of phosphatidyl-serine and DHA. Does itwork, you ask?

alcohol, etc., promotes free-radical damage,“the rusting out” from the inside whichcauses us to age more quickly, including ourbrain? Good herbals known for brain healthinclude Gotu Kola, Gingko Biloba, andHuperzime A. Remember the goal: toincrease brain levels of acetylcholine anddecrease its deterioration. Alan Kozikowski,Ph.D., the scientist who first synthesizedHuperzime A extract, says that HuperzimeA may just help with both these things(Healthy Healing, 12th edition. pg. 599.)Vinpocetine, from vincamine ~ an extractof periwinkle, has been used for 25 years inHungary for senility (Nutritional Healing).Garlic and Vitamin E ~ help to improveblood flow to the brain as well as Vitamin Cwith bioflavanoids. Things to stay awayfrom, says Anne, are “toomuch sugar and foodswith MSG. Sugar depletesvitamins, especially theB’s, and MSG is aneurotoxin. Staying awayfrom artificial sweeteners is a must and agood night’s sleep is very important,”concludes Anne. vitamin C is effective in many conditions, intravenouslyadministered vitamin C is much more potent. Some studies haveused or looked at orally administered vitamin C and concludedthat it was not effective. Orally administered vitamin C is actually very different from theIV form. The intravenously administered form has about 50 to 70times more serum concentration of the vitamin compared to orallyadministered. There is a tight control in the amount of vitamin Cthat can be absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. Hence, withorally administered vitamin C, a ceiling is reached in the amountabsorbed even when the maximum tolerated dose is given. IVvitamin C on the other hand, is not limited by this tight control.Furthermore, very high doses can be given intravenously to achievetherapeutic serum concentrations without any side effects. In summary, vitamin C is effective in preventing commoninfections to life-threatening cancer. Oral supplementation iseffective for health maintenance. However, if one has a seriouschallenge to one’s health, something like cancer and severeautoimmune disease or infection, then intravenous vitamin C shouldbe a major component in one’s treatment regimen. At Grace MedicalAssociation, we do IV vitamin C for a wide range of medicalconditions.References:1. Gladys Block: Epidemiologic evidences regarding vitamin Cand Cancer Am J. Clin. I began seeing Dr. Jan Nix in 2005 to treat my lower-back pain during my last pregnancy. On one visit I
mentioned to Dr. Jan that my midwife had discoveredmy baby was in a breech position and was obviouslyconcerned about delivery. Dr. Jan told me aboutsomething called the Webster technique, an alternativemethod of manipulating a baby into position for childbirth. The midwife had set up a sonogram appointment twoweeks prior to my due date, noting that an external
Chiropractor and NET practitioner Dr.Jan Nix is also certified in the WebsterTechnique, which has allowed her tohelp several patients avoid a C-section.

cephalic version would have to be scheduled with adoctor at the hospital if the baby was still in the breechposition at that time. I knew I had one week to let Dr. Jan “do her thing.” Forfive days I visited Dr. Jan and received treatments, about16 minutes each day. I could tell there was more “internalactivity” as a result of the treatments and, sure enough, the Webster technique worked, and baby Madisonmoved into proper position. My midwife was surprised! I am so grateful to Dr. Jan for her incredible knowledgeand expertise. I delivered, trouble free, a healthy 9 lbs.,8 oz., beautiful baby girl – head first, I might add!

Logging lots of miles may be good foryour legs, but when the produce youeat travels an average of 1,300 miles
to get from the farm to your table, importantnutrients get lost along the way. Fortunately, warm weather brings an easysolution. Your local farmer’s market offersproduce, meats, and dairy products that areoften organic and have likely been harvestedin the last 24 hours, so they reach your table
at the peak of freshness, flavor and nutrientcontent. Getting these nutritionalpowerhouses onto your plate has never beeneasier, as the USDA reports that the numberof farmer’s markets had more than doubledin the past 10 years, with nearly 4,000operating across the country today. (To findmarkets, farm stands, and small-scalefarmers in your area, visit foodroutes.org.) Organic fruits and vegetables from a farm
near you can contain up to 59% higher levelsof antioxidants ~ plant chemicals that helpfight disease ~ than their conventionallygrown counterparts, according to a studypublished in the journal Agriculture andFood Chemistry. Most of us are living a pretty busy and fast-paced lifestyle these days and don’t havemuch time to shop the farmer’s market andthen prepare the meals several times a day, even though we would like to. Whole-food products are a great solutionto the quandary of convenience and goodnutrition. The products I am speaking of use17 of the most powerful fruits, vegetablesand grains and 7 berries full of antioxidants, and dehydrate them into a powder. Thispowder is put into capsules or gummies. This is the most researched nutraceutical inthe world. The ease of being able to takeyour chemical/pesticide-free fruits andveggies with you wherever you go, for ¼ ofthe price, is very appealing! It is next to impossible to get in the dailyrequirement of 9-13 fruits and vegetables aday. If you could accomplish this, it wouldcost anywhere from $6 to $10 daily to buyorganic produce. Juicing can be very timeconsuming and costly as well. I think the whole-food concept is theperfect solution! On FDA website updated May 18, 2007: On March 15, FDA learned that certain pet foods were sickeningand killing cats and dogs. FDA found contaminants in vegetableproteins imported into the United States from China and used asingredients in pet food. A portion of the tainted pet food was used to producefarm animal feed and fish feed. FDA and the U.S.Department of Agriculture discovered that someanimals that ate the tainted feed had been processedinto human food. Government scientists havedetermined that there is very low risk to human healthfrom consuming food from animals that ate taintedfeed. All tainted pet food, animal and fish feed, and vegetable proteins continue to be recalledand destroyed. [HAYC comment: It may notbe a high, immediate death risk for humans, but it certainly can’t be good for us!]
Excerpt of Associated Press article by ChristopherBodeen released April 12, 2007: SHANGHAI, China — The list of Chinese food exports rejectedat American ports reads like a chef’s nightmare: pesticide-ladenpea pods, drug-laced catfish, filthy plums and crawfish contaminatedwith salmonella. Yet, it took a much more obscure item, contaminated wheat gluten,to focus U.S. public attention on a very real and frightening fact:China’s chronic food safety woes are now an international concern. In recent weeks, scores of cats and dogs in America have died ofkidney failure blamed on eating pet food containing gluten fromChina that was tainted with melamine, a chemical used in plastics, fertilizers and flame retardants. While humans aren’t believed atrisk, the incident has sharpened concerns over China’s food exportsand the limited ability of U.S. inspectors to catch problem shipments. “This really shows the risks of food purity problemscombining with international trade,” said Michiel Keyzer, director of the Center for World Food Studies at Amsterdam’s VrijeUniversiteit.
It seems that melamine has been around for decades. This datesme, but I remember as a kid, the pharmacy in my small hometownof West Virginia opened a new soda fountain. The ‘buzz’ around
town was that the counter tops were constructed of Formica. Neitherhot pans nor burning cigarettes would damage the surface! Thiswas melamine. I have been puzzled with one question: Why would a Chinesecompany put melamine in food products? Read further for theanswer, and read carefully, because we will see more of this, asunscrupulous people whom we don’t know personally willcontaminate our food supply for their gain. Should some of thehuman population, or our pets, die along the way, we will be“acceptable losses.” An April 19 article in USA Today by Elizabeth Weise and JulieSchmit called attention to the following: ChemNutra, which imported the wheat gluten linked to lastmonth’s massive pet-food recall, says it is concerned its Chinesesupplier spiked the product. In a letter on ChemNutra’s website(http://chemnutra.com/chairman’s%20letter.htm), Chief Executive
Steve Miller said, “We are concerned that we may have been thevictim of deliberate and mercenary contamination for the purposeof making the wheat gluten we purchased appear to have a higherprotein content than it did.” Melamine is “simply not a chemicaleven on the radar screen for food ingredient suppliers,” he wrote. But it does have a lot of nitrogen in it, says Ron Madl, director ofKansas State University’s Bioprocessing and Industrial Value Addedprogram. The most common way to test protein levels in the grainindustry is to test for nitrogen, a major component of protein. Addingmelamine, with its high amount of nitrogen, to wheat gluten wouldgive the illusion of a higher protein content, Madl said.
Take-Home Message What is the take home message from this mini-disaster? (I use“mini” because there will probably be larger disasters in the futureconcerning people food.) When it comes to food ~ buy local. When you see a sign in the grocery store that says “organic” fromChina, do not believe it! The farther food is shipped, the less nutrition it retains, and themore likely it can be contaminated by a faceless person who doesn’tcare about “us,” or our pets and livestock. Change your food-buying habits. Purchase from someone you canlook in the eye and know if he or she is honest. We cannot changeour buying habits overnight, but there are providers at co-ops, CSAs(community supported agriculture), local farmers who are honestand care about you. These groups of people are growing in numbersall the time. In the interim, buy local as much as possible and prepare yourown foods from scratch ~ this includes for our pets!

Oral non-steroidal anti-inflammatorydrugs (NSAIDs) are among themost commonly prescribed
medications and are widely prescribed torelieve pain and inflammation associatedwith rheumatic disease such as arthritis. NSAIDs are responsible forapproximately one-quarter of all adversedrug reaction reports, and approximatelyone in six patients experiencegastrointestinal or stomach irritation. Because patients who take NSAIDs on aregular basis are often older, many are atincreased risk for serious gastrointestinal(GI) complications. Studies report thebenefits of NSAIDs for treatment ofmusculoskeletal and soft-tissue injuries aswell as rheumatic diseases. Research and clinical experience provideclear evidence that topical NSAIDs areeffective analgesics and may beadministered in various dosage forms, including gels or sprays, to treat soft-tissueinjuries. Topical administration of NSAIDs offersthe advantage of local, enhanced drugdelivery to affected tissues with a reducedincidence of systemic side effects, such aspeptic ulcer disease and GI hemorrhage. NSAIDs applied topically also reach thesynovial (joint) fluid. The goal of using
topical NSAIDs is to achieve high tissuelevels beneath the site of application (suchas the knee or elbow), resulting in relief ofpain and inflammation, while minimizingthe amount of systemic absorption and riskof side effects. Topical administration produces systemicblood levels that are only 15% of thoseachieved when the same dose is taken orally, yet tissue concentrations below theapplication site have been found to be onehundred times higher with topicaladministration versus oral administration. Product formulation may have adramatic impact not only on absorptionrates, but also on penetration depth, and ifinactive ingredients used in a gel or creambase are not properly selected, they can beirritating to the skin. It is important that practitioners andpatients select a compounding pharmacywith state-of-the-art equipment and properlytrained personnel that utilize the highestgrade of chemicals.
Oral Versus Topical NSAIDs forTreating Injuries and RheumaticDiseases Here is an excellent example of how the highest quality compounding phar-macies serve our communities. From a wellness point of view, NSAIDs arenot a product of first choice, but this wellness-oriented pharmacy providespractical ways for the community at large, especially the elderly, to more effec-tively address their physical problems with much lower risk and side-effects.Note all the advantages of custom-compounded topical products. Compounding pharmacies are under constant attack by Big Pharma andother entities. Let’s support all of the quality compounding pharmacies in thisregion.

Your body is a vehicle for your soul. You are not this body ~ you’re inside.Your body is a “feeling machine” to
aid in the enjoyment of this existence. Whenyou wash it, it’s clean. Decorate it with jew-elry and bright colored clothes and you’redone. But... Are you forgetting something? Your car alsogets washed and primped, but is that all? Whatabout tires (shoes), alignment (joints), fluid(drink water!), belts (muscles), battery (healthydiet), oil change (detox cleansing)?
It’s apparent the car gets more attention thanyour body! Why?! I’ve been an advanced muscle mechanic forseven years now and leveling out the hips tocorrect uneven leg length is a piece of cake.Aligning the body by releasing tight musclesis simple but fundamental to the flow of yourbody. I will find areas that you didn’t even
know had potential problems and fix them onthe spot. A good mechanic will fix a small or poten-tial problem that a client didn’t even knowexisted (preventive maintenance), just becausehe cares for his clients. So call 214-578-3564 for free phone con-sultation. Relaxation classes are available freeas well.

The Advantages of Thermogra-phy for Breast Cancer Screening! There’s no radiation, no compression, and no pain! Having athermogram is as easy as having your picture taken.
Who is a candidate for breast thermography? Any woman, regardless of age or breast size, who seeks a painless andradiation-free prodedure to screen for breast cancer should
consider a thermogram. Some of the advantages are:• Safe, easy, and pain free• No radiation exposure• No compression of breast tissue ~ as easy as a photograph!• Detects changes in breast tissue that accompany the smallest of tu-mors• Entire breast can be imaged• Differentiates between fibrocystic breast disease and tumors• Effectively and safely screens breasts with implants• Useful for evaluating chest wall after breast surgery• Effective for breasts of all sizes• Creates opportunities for early intervention Currently, the most utilized breast cancer screening imaging tech-niques are ultrasound and mammography. Because they detect the pres-ence of a physical mass, they are classified as anatomical tests. They
are interpreted by radiologists. Breast thermography detects patterns of heat produced from the in-creased circulation produced by abnormal metabolic activity in cancercells. Thus, thermography is a physiological test. Thermograms areinterpreted by thermologists. Breast thermography combines advanced digital technology withultra-sensitive infrared camera imaging to create a significant advancein the safe and early screening for breast cancer. Scientific signs and criteria established by the American Academy ofThermology are used to interpret data. Call WBHC today!
