May/June 2020

Friday 24th April 2020

Dear Members, Staff, Volunteers & Students

It has been 4 weeks since we closed Diamond House day & group programs to

Members, Students and Volunteers due to Corona Virus (COVID 19). This decision was

made to help reduce the risk of Staff, Members, Students and Volunteers being

exposed to the flu and the Corona virus, following advice from SA Health and the

Federal Government. So far South Australia is doing really well with less and less people

contracting COVID 19, but we still need to be careful and continue to take all necessary

precautions to minimise the risks of contracting the virus.

We have developed a weekly roster for Members, Staff and Volunteers from Monday

May 4th 2020 until Saturday 30th May 2020 to provide psychosocial supports at Diamond

House Monday - Friday 9.00-3.00pm to Saturday 9.00-2.00pm . We will practice strict

social distancing with only 10 people attending across the day at Diamond House to

meet the current group restrictions. You will need to call Diamond House on 82445525 to

find out which days you are rostered to attend Diamond House.

We will continue to provide daily outreach support to keep in touch with Members by

phone calls, email, Facebook/Diamond Clubhouse and through other social media

including Zoom meetings. Members can also ring Diamond House on 8244 5525 and talk

to Staff if they have any concerns or questions. You can also call us to let us know how

you are managing.

We will continue to provide essential NDIS supports to our NDIS participants on a one to

one basis through the week. Staff will be contacting individuals and arranging supports

especially for GP appointments, hospital visits and other essential appointments.

If you want to talk to someone or urgently need advocacy, ring Diamond House and

organise a one on one meeting. If you think you are becoming mentally or physically

unwell, please contact Mental Health Triage on 131465 or SA Mental Health COVID-19 line 1800 253 787

We also request that all Members, Staff and Volunteers have a flu injection before

returning to Diamond House as part of our Wellness in the Workplace to help reduce the

number of people who will get the flu this year.

We will keep you informed and supported while we are working through this ever

changing environment. Please take care of yourself, wash your hands properly, wash

your clothes more than usual and shower every day to help reduce the risk of getting

the flu and lower the risk of getting the corona virus. Stay home as much as you can

unless you have to go to the shops, pick up your medication or visit the doctor.

If we can all follow these simple directions, together we can get through this.

Take care & be strong. We are all more resilient than we think.

Please go to page 9 in this newsletter for some practical tips that I have included.

INGREDIENTS

INSTRUCTIONS

1. In a large pot or dutch oven, heat oil over medium-high heat and sauté onion, celery and carrots, stirring

occasionally, about 5 minutes. Add mushrooms and garlic, cooking another 3 minutes.

2. Stir in the chicken stock, bay leaves, turmeric, crushed red pepper, salt and chickpeas; bringing to a boil. Mix

in shredded chicken, cover and turn down heat to a simmer for 15 to 20 minutes.

3. Add kale, cover and simmer an additional 5 minutes. Discard bay leaves, serve and enjoy!

You can always add uncooked chicken breasts too and just boil them in the soup for about 25

minutes. Then simply shred them like you would the roast chicken.

This makes a large batch so keep in the fridge and eat over a few days or freeze in portions.

Healthy Snack Ideas

1. Eggs - A healthy snack which also gives you a bit of Vitamin D!!

2. Kiwi Fruit - Has double the Vitamin C than an orange. Also rich in antioxidants and is immune boosting.

3. Tuna or Salmon (fresh or tinned) - Oily fish like these are great for Omega 3s which also help mood (flavoured tins

of tuna do have many additives so go for plain if you can)

4. Air-Popped popcorn - Great healthy snack to munch and crunch with lots of fibre (it is the but-

ter/oil etc that is unhealthy)

5. Pistachios in the shell - Contain Vitamin B6, iron and magnesium

6. Celery sticks with a little peanut butter - hydrating and has potassium in the celery

7. Dates - a couple of dates keeps the sugar cravings at bay

8. Veggie sticks with some plain Greek yoghurt or some hummus dip

9. Avocadoes are healthy - make a guacamole or avo dip and have with veggie sticks or on some wholemeal toast

10. Plain boiled potatoes are a healthy, hunger buster. Add some garlic or herbs for a bit of flavour. Don’t forget to

leave the skin on - great source of fibre. Add some plain Greek yoghurt with the herbs n spices for a bit of a sauce

Practical Tips

Here are some practical psychological tips you can try

to help cope with anxiety and worry about the virus.

Get informed with the right information

News from mainstream media and social media

may sensationalise or exaggerate issues further

increasing our stress and anxiety.

Access information that you can trust - e.g. ABC

radio, Australian Government Department of

Health website, World Health Organisation

website.

Get active & organised

Makes plans & write a list of what you need to

buy, organise or set up and do it!

When you feel stressed ask yourself “What do I

need to do to help manage this situation ?”.

Talk to family, friends and people you trust. Ask

for help and maybe help them too.

Balance your thoughts

Challenge you negative thoughts, whenever you

recognise a negative thought balance it with a

realistic thought.

Shut down the noise

Give yourself permission to switch off “noise“ such

as social media and TV News.

Only watch the News once or twice a day.

Replace noise with things you enjoy doing,

listening to music, walking on the beach or in the

park, meditation and mindfulness.

Remember who you are

Even when you feel stressed remember who you

are and what you believe in.

Be kind, gentle and respectful to yourself and to

others & reach out support others.

Keep healthy routines

Emotional health is strongly affected by regular

routines.

Spend time thinking about the routines that are

important to you & those around you.

Plan to do fun things.

Stay engaged

Stay connected & engaged with people &

meaningful activities. Examples include using

Skype, Facetime, online forums, chat groups,

webinars

Keep looking forward

Remember in time things will improve, people will

recover, and our lives will return to some kind of

normal.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR MEMBERS

A reminder for EVERYONE to please wash your hands with soap and water

for 20 seconds after EVERY visit to the toilet.

We need to do this for everyone’s health and safety and to stop the spread of

germs.

Please remember to stay home if you are feeling sick

(if you feel like you may have a virus or bacterial infection) so that you are not

passing it on to others who may have other serious health issues and

also so you can stay home & rest and let your body recover.

Good personal hygiene habits (for everyone’s health and safety) include:

Washing the body often. If possible, everybody should have a shower or a bath every day. However,

there may be times when this is not possible, for example, when people are out camping or there is a

shortage of water

If this happens, a swim or a wash all over the body with a wet sponge or cloth will do

Wear some antiperspirant deodorant under your arms to keep smelling fresh

Cleaning the teeth at least once a day. Brushing the teeth after each meal is the best way of making

sure that gum disease and tooth decay are avoided. It is very important to clean teeth after breakfast

and immediately before going to bed

Washing the hair with soap or shampoo at least once a week

Always washing hands with soap after going to the toilet

Always washing hands with soap before preparing and/or eating food.

Changing into clean clothes. Dirty clothes should be washed with laundry soap

before wearing them again. Bedding needs to be washed regularly too.

Hanging clothes in the sun to dry if you can. The sun's rays will kill some disease-causing germs and para-

sites

Turning away from other people and food and covering the nose and mouth with a tissue or into the

arm when coughing or sneezing.

Please remember: no singlets to be worn as an outer garment whilst at Diamond House.

When to wash your hands

Wash your hands before touching anything that needs to stay clean, and after touching anything that might contaminate your hands.

Examples include:

when your hands are visibly dirty

after going to the toilet

after helping a child go to the toilet, or changing a nappy

after handling rubbish, household or garden chemicals, or anything that could be contaminated

before you prepare or eat food

after touching raw meat

after blowing your nose or sneezing

after patting an animal

after cleaning up blood, vomit or other body fluids

after cleaning the bathroom

before and after you visit a sick person in hospital

before and after touching a wound, cut or rash
