Shabbat Services for

May/June 2019

In Judaism there is no word for “goodbye.”

Instead we say l’hitraot-see you again. Life is not

linear-it goes in cycles.

It is with mixed emotions and a heavy heart

that I have come to my last bulletin article at JJC. I

have greatly enjoyed my 5 years at JJC. I came

here newly married; now I have two children. I came

here never having led a congregation; now I have 5

years’ experience as a Senior Rabbi.

I want to thank Barbara Rosenblum and

Harold Levine for all that you did to bring me to

Jericho. You did so much behind the scenes to

provide me with a successful transition to JJC.

Thank you to Mark Wilkow for all the get-togethers

he did my first summer, our countless number of

meetings brainstorming how to strengthen JJC and

our friendship. Thank you to Martha Perlson and

Diane Charet for all your dedication to JJC and for

the positive changes you made, such as the STEM

Preschool.

Richard-I cannot thank you enough for being

there for me (even when it would have been easier

to not be) and for going outside your comfort zone

to step into a role you preferred not to do. You have

had a wonderful teammate in Jay Sherman and

have done a yeomen’s job to ensure a successful

transition in the Presidency of JJC. I cannot thank

you enough for your friendship and for all the

conversations (both easy and challenging) that we

have had.

The congregants of JJC are truly a special

group, and JJC has much to be proud of. My

rabbinate has been enriched with all of the

wonderful experiences we have shared together. My

favorite moments were life cycle events, whether

Bar/Bat Mitzvahs or Weddings, but especially

officiating at the Aufruf for the children of

congregants followed by the Baby Naming of their

daughter. I will miss the kindness and generosity

that you have shown me as well as the numerous

congregants who took me under their wing to help

me succeed at JJC.

Transitions and changes are very difficult,

and I am sorry to have foisted such a significant one

upon you. At the same time, I know that June will

not be the last time that I will see you. Many JJC

congregants vacation and snowbird in Florida.

When you are there, please email me at

[email protected], and I would love to find

time to visit with you. I know JJC will have a bright

future with Rabbi Matthew Abelson, and I look

forward to hearing only good things about the future

of our congregation.

I will always remember the kindness and

care you have shown me and how you allowing me

to try things on my own (and at times fail) helped

bolster my success as your Rabbi. I came to JJC

very green and inexperienced: now thanks to you I

am a much more seasoned rabbi. Thank you for

being who you are as a congregation and for all you

do to continue to strengthen JJC.

As we say in Hebrew, L’hitraot-until we meet

again (and we will certainly meet again!).

L’hitraot

As I write this article, we are observing the Chol Hamoed of Passover. Although I may be tired, there is no

way that I am even close to feeling the exhaustion that Helene and the other seder hostesses experience. I

may have carried some boxes from the basement to the kitchen. I didn’t make the countless trips to the

grocery store and the butcher, polish silver platters and Kiddush cups, then move items from the cupboard

shelves which had to be brought downstairs out of the light of day, only to have to be returned at the end of

the holiday. I didn’t shape dozens and dozens of matzah balls, peel countless potatoes or clean enough

chickens to feed soup to an army. I neglected to mention the task of washing of dishes, glasses, silverware,

pots and serving dishes after everyone went home.

In the end however all of the fuss and muss was priceless. We all had the pleasure of sharing our tables with

family and friends. With another year of education, our grandchildren plus my brother’s and sister’s were able

to contribute even more to the seder. The children were able to add their ideas, experiences and comments

to the discussion. Yes there were some empty chairs at the table that will never be filled, but we can treasure

the memories of the seders that we enjoyed for so many years. The embroidered matzah cover created

several generations ago is always on the table, as are the silver candle sticks and heirloom (I don’t mean

Maxwell House) haggadahs. We know the story behind each of these precious and important family

possessions. There are tunes that we will never forget. There are pictures in our minds as we recall those

who played the role of the ox or the goat as we circled the table, giving each person the opportunity to

personalize a verse of chad gadya.

In that light, early in June, the Jericho Jewish Center will be giving each of us the opportunity to personalize a

book or a chapter or a verse in the Torah. Thanks to the generosity of Neil and Sherry Cohen, who have

donated a Torah scroll to our synagogue in memory of Neil’s parents Norman and Harriet Cohen, we will be in

a position to create our own memories and pass them on to another generation. At the seder table we talked

about freedom, and the tragedies of slavery and oppression, which continue to play out every day across the

globe. Wouldn’t your participation in the writing in the Torah of the Jericho Jewish Center be an important

method of underscoring that we are free and that we understand not to take for granted the words and

lessons of the Torah.

The handwritten words of the Torah have shaped us. I trust that each one of us a favorite passage or parsha

that has made us what we are today and that we pass on to our children and grandchildren. Is there a

particular verse that reminds us of an important event or milestone in our lives? Is there a section that we can

relate to? Is there a part of the Torah that provides us with solace when challenges might appear to be

overwhelming?

Please contact Rabbi Herman and arrange to participate in the siyum to be celebrated at our synagogue and

memorialize or honor someone important in our lives.

A week after we march the new Torah to the ark, we will observe the holiday of Shavuos, marking the giving

of the Torah to our people at Mt. Sinai. It would certainly be special to participate in both of these events.

On the Shabbos morning of June 22, 2019 the Jericho Jewish Center will be bidding Rabbi Herman a farewell

as he and his family leave our community to go to Bet Shira Congregation in Miami, Florida. Please join us

that morning to thank Rabbi Herman for his efforts on behalf of our synagogue.

With appreciation,

Richard Cepler

Shalom! It seems impossible that we are already winding down our Religious School year yet the learning never stops here at the Jewish Youth Learning Center!

We had some exciting experiences in our school. All grades are working on projects that highlight specific “Jewish People Who Have Made a Difference” in the world. Some are presenting with posters, some are creating cereal boxes with their accomplishment, while others are doing Powerpoint presentations, card games etc. Each week the Religious School gathers to hear a few of the presentations.

Our Shabbat Alive services, which take place in the Beit Midrash on the first Shabbat of each month, are growing and well attended. It is a joy to listen to the students leading the service and watch the parents kvell over their children. Parents often participate in the service with an Aliyah or carrying the Torah and are learning about Shabbat morning services alongside their children. This past month we shared where and how G-d is in our lives.

In early April we were fortunate to have two of our former Religious School students; Michelle and Sara Wishner take part in the Witness Project Program. It was an evening, so well attended (1,500 people) to witness the collaborative yearlong meeting of the students and the survivors they worked with. The art exhibition and the narrative show were very inspirational. Kol Hakavod! If any of your children (high school age) would like to participate in next year’s Witness Project Program, please let me know ASAP so I may register them.

This year to culminate our Passover learning we had a Chocolate Seder. The Chocolate Seder Haggadah was interactive including all the steps of the Seder. The brachot were recited including some special words blessing our chocolate milk, ַחָלב ׁשֹוקֹוָלד

Model focusses on teaching children how to bring together a host of skills – managing daily schedules,

routines, and transitions, learning to follow school rules, following multi-step directions and problem

solving a variety of situations, learning about emotions of self and others, and learning how to build

friendship skills. We encourage you to continue to teach these skills over the summer, as they are

building blocks to future success.

When teaching your children, remember the quote -

“Show me & I forget. Teach me & I remember. Involve me & I learn”

Parents once again we would like to thank you on behalf of our entire staff for your ongoing support.

The Garden in Spring By Martha Perlson

Aah Spring… is all that’s needed to see the promise of what will come, especially for the

Holocaust Memorial Garden. The weather has turned warmer and trees and plants are budding;

the bricks have been cleaned off and dead leaves have been removed. Our HMG Committee is

busy once more… planting flowers and bricks and seeds for the future.

Once again, we ask you to make a contribution to the HMG Fund… and once you do, take a

walk through the garden and see the fruits of your support; contemplate the future you’ve helped to

build. The ‘Dreamers’ who planted the garden and purchased the Holocaust Memorial Sculpture

(Eighteen years ago!) saw the promise. It’s up to all of us to continue making good on that promise.

Because, your contribution not only goes to keeping up the garden, but also to keeping up our

synagogue.

By the time this edition of the Newsletter arrives, Passover will be a memory. We just

finished saying these words from the Haggadah, “This year we are slaves. Next year we will be

free.” THIS is the promise. Your contribution helps to sustain that promise and support our

synagogue into the future.

Thank you!!

Mitzvah 613: Writing a Sefer Torah

“And now, write for yourselves this song, and teach it to the Children of Israel. Place it into

their mouths, in order that this song will be for Me as a witness for the children of

Israel.” (Deuteronomy 31:19). While this is referring to the song of Haazinu near the end of the

Torah, The Talmud (Nedarim 38a) has taken this to refer to the commandment for every Jew to

write his/her own Sefer Torah (Torah scroll).

It is a special skill to write a Torah, and it takes on average a year to do so. As many of us

have other vocations, how then can we fulfill this command? According to Rabbi Moses Isserles (the

Rema), we fulfill it by writing at least one letter in the Torah (Yoreh Deah 270:1 based off Menachot

30a).

During the 2018-19 synagogue year, each of us will have the opportunity to fulfill this

Mitzvah, thanks to the generosity of Neil and Sherry Cohen. Neil’s parents, Norman and Harriet z”l

were members of the Jericho Jewish Center for almost 60 years. When Norman z”l passed away

last year, Neil and Sherry sought to honor him through a gift to his spiritual home, the Jericho

Jewish Center. Their generosity enables us to acquire a new Torah at JJC, a welcome addition, as

most of our Torot are heavy and a number of them are pasul (unfit for ritual use). Each of us will

have the opportunity to fulfill this commandment by donating for a letter, a word or a more

substantial gift to be given in memory of a loved one or in honor of a simcha. All donors will receive

a certificate of appreciation for their donation, will get to write a letter in the Torah and will have a

photo taken with the scribe as this is done.

Please send your gift in to the Jericho Jewish Center and indicate that it is for the Mitzvah

613 Torah campaign. Also please inform your family and friends, inviting them to contribute to our

new Torah. Let us know if you are interested in participating in our Mitzvah 613 committee: we are

looking for creative minds to plan educational programs around the Torah. Lastly, please indicate if

it is in honor of a simcha or in memory of a loved one so that we can acknowledge it appropriately.

You can donate online: www.jerichojc.com/mitzvah613/

JERICHO JEWISH CENTER SIMCHA TREE

The Simcha Tree leaves can be purchased to commemorate a Simcha such as the birth of a grandchild, a Bar / Bat Mitzvah, or to honor a special birthday. A leaf can be purchased for any happy occasion. Your message will be engraved on the leaf. Choose a spot and the leaf is installed. This is a lovely way to support the Jericho Jewish center and honor your dear one. The cost of a leaf is $250.00. The “CHAI” stones are $1,800. I look forward to hearing from you. Shirley Grubin 516-342-9179

mailed for you, please call Evelyn Rubin at 516-935-1377 and she will be happy to do so. All

welcome.

Sponsor ing a Kiddush

Please e-mail or phone if you are interested in sponsoring a Kiddush honoring or memorializing a loved one or for a celebratory event. Kay Caterers offers a more elaborate kiddush as well. The prices are based on a 75 person Congregation Kiddush; there is an extra charge for additional guests. In addition, if anyone is interested in hosting a Minyan Breakfast that, too, is available. I would be happy to discuss each of the options in detail with you regarding content and cost.

Please contact me if you are interested in sponsoring a Kiddush, breakfast or luncheon in honor or in memory of someone. We have many options that we can work with you. Judy Solomon (516) 938-7538, [email protected]
