WOUND TIGHT

Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh,

when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them. Ecc.12:1

In earlier days of the self-winding watch, most would wind the watch in the evening. A watchmaker, good in their craft, would say the best time to wind the watch was early in the day. For it was apparent a timepiece, wound tight in the morning, would be more adept to withstand the bumps and jolts it would encounter throughout the day. As a reflection of the scripture in Ecclesiastes, we are reminded that early in our life, we also need to be “wound tight” but, with Jesus Christ! In our life’s journey as the bumps and jolts come our way, and they will, we will be better equipped to withstand those obstacles. Know that we serve a Savior who loves, and is kind and has given us all provisions to make it through life’s journey, even when it seems life is at its darkest moment.

Be blessed,

Pastor Tarrance

A TOUCH OF INSPIRATION

A FATHER’S DAY STORY: My Birthday Gift

I grew up with a father who was always away

from home, always at his work, and never had

time for us because he was always working

hard to get us the best life he could. He is the

most generous and caring person you can ever

meet, but simply we couldn’t feel it much since

he was away.... Years passed by and dad got

older and he got sick. He started forgetting

things, forgetting incidents, places, people... It’s

been three years now and his situation is

getting worse and worse. He is no longer

working, no longer able to do anything by

himself - from eating to dressing up to brushing

his teeth, we now have a big baby in our house.

What makes me sad is that when I was young I

was never able to enjoy having him as a father,

and now he is sick I am not able to enjoy

seeing him as well - at least seeing him like the

picture I have in my mind...

Yesterday it was my birthday and of course he

couldn’t remember it, so my brother came up to

him and asked him if he wished me a happy

birthday and if he had money for me (he used

to give us money for our birthdays when we

were kids). Dad simply replied, “No, I didn’t

know it was her birthday.” In the afternoon,

mom caught him in the bedroom fetching with

his pants pocket. She asked him, “What are

you doing?” He said, “I am looking for money to

give for her birthday gift.”

Later that day when I came back from work,

mom told me the story and I burst into tears.

I realized that he doesn’t have to be like the

picture in my head - so I enjoy being around

him, even if he is sick... It was simply the best

birthday gift I have ever received.

REFLECTING BACK TRIP TO BETHEL - MARION

Our own Bethel Noblesville traveled to Marion, Indiana for an afternoon program in April. It is always good to see old and new faces, and to be able to all worship together.

FELLOWSHIP WITH CHURCH OF THE LIVING GOD

The congregation, pastor, and choir of Church of the Living God traveled from Indianapolis on March 23rd to worship with Bethel. The songs sung by their choir, the message brought by their pastor, and the fellowshipping/dinner before the service was very uplifting.

MOVIE NIGHT

On Saturday, May 3, Bethel’s Steward Board sponsored a movie night featuring the movies “The Gabby Douglas Story” for the adults and “Despicable Me 2” for the kids. From the nachos and popcorn, to laughing at funny parts in the movies, everyone enjoyed the fellowship with their church family. REV. KAREN CROSS VISIT TO BETHEL

On Sunday, March 30, Rev. Karen Cross traveled from Illinois to worship with our congregation. She delivered the sermon taken from Ephesians 1: 1-14, with the subject "When You're Blessed, Is God Glorified?" Rev. Cross is Associate pastor at Bethel A.M.E. Church in Carbondale, Illinois and Shaffer Chapel A.M.E. Church in Colp, Illinois. She is also the daughter of our own Eunice Collins.

REV. KAREN CROSS VISIT TO BETHEL CONTINUED

A “Thank You” from Rev. Cross:

What a joy it was to worship, fellowship, and preach at my home church, Bethel Noblesville. When we open our eyes wide, we have the opportunity to witness the awesome favor of the Lord. That's what happened for me on Sunday, March 30th. We church members so often speak about preparing ourselves for the worst, but on the contrary it's important to be prepared for the best! It is a privilege to watch God grow His physical church, as well as His people. Remember what the Apostle Paul told the Church of Rome: "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to his purpose." (Romans 8:28) Until we meet again, love to you all and Keep On Blessing the Lord!! -- Rev. Karen

THE COMPUTER GUY RE-VISITING SAFE COMPUTING 201

BY ARCHIE SKATES For the sake of not sounding like a broken record… but I am going to revisit articles that I have written at least once a year since the birth of

the Computer Guy Series. The topic of anti-virus software and protecting your computers remains one of the hottest topics in the tech world.

This past month I had the pleasure to be introduced to a wonderful little evil virus called Cryptlocker. Cryptlocker is a malicious program

known as Ransomware. While some Ransomware just freezes your computer and asks you to pay a fee. (These threats can usually be

unlocked without paying up, using a decent anti-virus program as a recovery tool.) Cryptolocker is different: your computer and software

keep on working, but your personal files, such as documents, spreadsheets and images, are all encrypted. The criminals retain the only

copy of the decryption key on their server - it is not saved on your computer, so you cannot unlock your files without their assistance. So

without paying the requested ransom (which is NOT recommended) your files are locked forever and therefore are lost. Even after you use

antivirus software to remove the virus, you cannot recover or decrypt your files. They have to be restored from your backups. You are

backing up….right? I took this as the perfect time to once again cover “Safe Computing 101”.

Getting a computer virus is much like catching a cold. You have to be introduced to the infection. In computer terms you can only “catch” a

computer virus by installing the virus on your computer. The famous last words of everyone that has ever been effected is…”I didn’t install

anything.” The fact is, you have to click on a link (which links to a file), download a file, and install the virus. The trick is code writers have

become very smart in their ability to spread their malware in ways that if the user isn’t paying attention they don’t even realize they are

installing the virus.

One tricks used are flash screens. A user is surfing the Internet and a pop-up screen says “your computer is running slow, please “click

here” to scan your pc”, or some other type of message. The problem is this message is not from your anti-virus program and you click the

link and install malware. You are infected! You receive and email from what perceives to be from your bank, credit card company, or some

online shopping site, stating there is some type of problem and you need to “click here” to go to the site to correct the sta ted issues. But this

email is fake and you go to a phishing site and download malicious files to your pc, or you provide personal information to the fake web site.

You are infected! You love downloading all those “free” movies and music torrents. But sometimes you think you are downloading the new

hit song or block busting movie only to download a virus that when you click to play it installs a virus. You are infected!

So what can I do to protect myself? Here are some Simple Tips for you to follow: 1. Run Antivirus Software: If you're running a computer it's highly recommended you have some form of antivirus and spyware

protection on that computer to help clean it from any infections currently on the computer and to help prevent any future infections. Today most service provides of your Internet also provides a free security suit with your account.

2. Make sure your computer has the latest updates: Many of the updates, especially those associated with Microsoft Windows and

other operating systems and programs, are security updates. Running a program or operating system that is not up-to-date with the latest updates can be a big security risk and can be a way your computer becomes infected. You can set your pc to run updates automatically.

3. Pay attention when opening e-mail attachments: A very common way people become infected with viruses and other spyware is

by opening e-mail attachments, even when from a co-worker, friend, or family member. E-mail addresses can be faked and even when not faked your acquaintance may unsuspectingly be forwarding you an infected file. Please know what you are downloading. When receiving an e-mail with an attachment, if the e-mail was not expected or from someone you don't know, delete it. If the e-mail is from someone you know, be cautious when opening the attachment.

4. Accepting without reading: By far one of the most common ways a computer becomes infected is the user accepts what he or

she sees on the screen without reading the prompt or understand what it's asking. Some common examples: --While browsing the Internet, an Internet advertisement or window appears that says your computer is infected or that a unique plug-in is required. Without fully understanding what it is you're getting, you accept the prompt. --When installing or updating a program, you're prompted (often checkboxes already checked) if it's ok to install additional programs that you may not want or are designed to monitor your usage of the program.

5. Prating software, music, or movies: If you or someone on your computer is participating in underground places on the Internet

where you're downloading copyrighted music, movies, software, etc. for free, often many of the files can contain viruses, spyware

or malicious software. When downloading any software (programs, utilities, games, updates, demos, etc.), make sure you're

downloading the software from a reliable source and while installing it you're reading all prompts about what the program is putting

on your computer.

So here are my top five safe computing tips. By following these simple tips you will help ward off your chances of getting infected. All people

who use computers should be aware of how to properly use the computer and protect it from malicious software. Remember the Internet can

be a dangerous place, so let’s put an end to the madness of viruses, and always practice “safe computing!” Good luck and remember the

“Computer Guy” articles try to make readers aware and provide brief information on computer technology. If you are still having questions

please email me at [email protected].

HERE’S TO GOOD HEALTH MARRIAGE: GOOD FOR THE HEART?

BY Angie Granger

Middle-age women living with a spouse or partner carried a lower risk of dying from ischemic heart disease compared with

those living alone, although the absolute difference was small, a large British study showed. Through an average of about 9

years of follow-up, 0.24% of the partnered women and 0.50% of the unpartnered women died from ischemic heart disease,

according to Sarah Floud, PhD, of the University of Oxford in England, and colleagues.

After taking into account socioeconomic status, lifestyle, and other risk factors, that worked out to a relative 28% lower risk of

succumbing to heart disease (relative risk 0.72, 95% CI 0.66-0.80), they reported online in BMC Medicine. The lower risk is

unexplained, although proposed mechanisms include differences in compliance with treatments, the seeking of medical help,

or social support.

"We are well aware that prompt attention for symptoms of myocardial infarction results in reduced myocardial muscle loss and

improved survival," John Erwin III, MD, of the Scott & White Heart and Vascular Institute in Temple, Texas, told MedPage

Today. "Domestic partners certainly provide insight and direction when individuals are in denial about signs and symptoms

that they may be experiencing. We know that a person's reasoning is significantly impaired with poor self-actualization in the

midst of an ischemic event (be it heart attack or stroke)."

The take-away message is that "our species is clearly meant to live in community with one another," said Erwin, who was not

involved in the study. "Relationships clearly play a role in our health and sense of well-being." Previous studies have shown

that married men are less likely to die from ischemic heart disease compared with their unattached counterparts, but the issue

has not been as well studied in women. A Finnish study published last year showed that both men and women had a greater

risk of dying after an acute coronary syndrome if they were unmarried, but Floud and colleagues noted that the findings were

not adjusted for socioeconomic status or lifestyle factors.

In the current study, the researchers used data from the Million Women Study, which originally recruited about 1.3 million

women through the U.K. national breast screening program. This analysis included 734,626 women (mean age 60 at baseline)

who had no previous history of heart disease, stroke, or cancer. Most (81%) were married or living with a partner at baseline

(no information was available about changes in status during the study).

During an average follow-up of 8.8 years, 30,747 women had a first ischemic heart disease event (either a hospitalization or

death); there were 2,148 deaths from ischemic heart disease, which included those following a prior hospitalization.

After adjustment for various factors, the risk of having a first event was not significant in women who were married or living

with a partner compared with those who were unpartnered (4% versus 5%, RR 0.99, 95% CI 0.96-1.02).

The lower risk of dying from ischemic heart disease was consistent across various subgroups and regardless of whether

women had been admitted previously for ischemic heart disease during the study period.

"In this cohort, unpartnered women tended to live alone, so a possible explanation for the lower risk of death among partnered

women may be that they have someone at home who can respond to symptoms and help them seek appropriate treatment,"

Floud and colleagues wrote.

Also, the presence of a spouse has been shown to improve medication adherence, although in the current study there were no

differences between partnered and unpartnered women in the use of statins, diuretics, and beta-blockers after being admitted

for heart disease.

"Social support has also been proposed to mediate the association between marital status and health, but in this study adjustment for variables which could indicate social interaction, including parity, participation in group activities and employment, and measures of well-being, such as reported happiness and treatment for depression, had little effect on the risk estimates," the researchers noted. "However, we cannot exclude possible roles of unmeasured aspects of social support, such as the frequency of social contact or the quality of social support. They acknowledged that they could not rule out residual confounding from other factors either. Disease severity at hospital admission, for example, was not available in the data.
