We recently attended the FHBA 2011 Spring Conference inTallahassee. Although attendance was down a bit from previousyears, the event was quite informative. We met with our legislatureto discuss concerns, needs and “wish list” for the PCBA. They werevery open to discussion and are equally as concerned about thecurrent construction industry and its impact on the economy for thestate. It was good to see that they are actually “on the same page”regarding many aspects and are working to improve the conditionsoverall. I would highly recommend that you visit our state capital ifyou ever have the opportunity. It is a terrific opportunity to see howthe legislative process works. If you are interested in learning more

about these types of issues, please plan to attend one of our next GovernmentAffairs meetings. Involvement is KEY.

The Blueprint and Model Competition (hosted by the PCBA Foundation) will be heldon Tuesday, May 10th at George Jenkins High School. As upcoming leaders in theconstruction industry, these students are excited about their accomplishments andhave a great amount of respect for its current leadership. Our support will go a longway in keeping them motivated and help mold their futures. Let’s show them that wecare by attending this event.

Be sure to join us for the June 7th GMM Event. Al Zichella, Vice President of KDMerick & Co, and our current FHBA President will be a guest speaker at this event. The event will consist of a Legislative Wrap-Up Dinner, Wine Tasting and SilentAuction. Be sure to bring in your silent auction donations now and have your com-pany spotlighted at the event and in the program.

The Spring Parade event has just ended and the results indicate overwhelminglypositive results. We have received many comments relative to the increased trafficseen this year throughout the homes in the show. This parade featured 22 newhomes, 2 remodels and 1 outdoor living entry. Congratulations to all participants ofthis event as everyone worked very hard to make it happen (builders, staff and com-mittee members). This is an excellent opportunity to obtain a tremendous amountof advertising and exposure for a single entry fee. This exposure will continue asthere are over 7,000 copies of the new membership directory/parade book on dis-tribution racks at over 100 locations throughout Polk County. The Parade may beover, but the advertising continues, stretching your investment to the max.

We are currently looking for a Showcase Home for the Fall Parade of Homes. Thisis a great opportunity for a Builder to have their home showcased, gaining both pub-licity and advertising. The Showcase Home and Builder will be featured on the coverof the parade magazine as well as in all media outlets for the event. We havereceived a lot of interest, but to date, we have not yet received a solid commitment. In closing, remember to do business with a member. It doesn’t matter what thenature of your business is, there are other members that can add value to your busi-ness right here in our association. Give them the opportunity to work with you. Alltrades and members are listed on the PCBA website. We need our members andour members need us. And did I mention? Involvement is KEY!

Until next time, Roger.

When Fox Business News sought an expert's view on the state of the housing market, builder sentiment and the latest government proposals regarding the mortgage interestdeduction and qualified residential mortgages, their producers looked to NAHB ChairmanBob Nielsen this week.

On April 19, Bob did a live TV interview in which he brought our association's top mes-sages to viewers across the country. Those messages included a sound defense of themortgage interest deduction, an argument for re-establishing the flow of credit to homebuilders, an assertion of the importance of homeownership and housing choice to allAmericans, and a warning about overly restrictive mortgage lending requirements thatcould push homeownership beyond the reach of many families, among other comments. On a point of pride, the interviewer introduced Bob by noting that NAHB "was the firstmajor organization to come out swinging" against recent proposals to amend or eliminatethe mortgage interest deduction.

Here's a link to the interview on the Fox News website. We encourage you to check it out and spread the news to your fellow members:

First Friday Is Coming!!!NOVEMBER 4TH, 2011

MARK YOUR CALENDARS AND RESERVE YOUR SPACE!

COST: $150

First Friday is sponsored by The Downtown LakelandPartnership on the first Friday of each month in Downtown Lakeland.

The streets around Munn Park are closed off, and the streets are filled with displays fea-turing members of the Downtown Lakeland Partnership, an antique car show, and local per-

formers and artist. A typical turnout for a First Friday in November is over 5,000 people.

On November 4th, PCBA members will have the exclusive use of Munn Park for the evening and First Fridaywill be dedicated to PCBA and it's members. Plan to reserve your space early as we are limited to 50 six footlong tables in the park. This event is kind of like an "Outdoor Evening Home Show". Where else can youshowcase your business to over 5,000 in one place and only spend $150.

First Friday is advertised heavily in the Ledger, Time Out, on the net, by blast email and in20,000 copies of the Downtown Lakeland Partnerships own publication, The Dish. In

addition, PCBA advertises First Friday to our own members through the PCBA website,by email, the newsletter and direct mail.

Last October in 2010, PCBA participated in First Friday for the first time. 24 of our members had displays inMunn Park. The turnout was fantastic! Crowds were bigger than what they normally are in October.

After the event, participating PCBA members made a lot of positive comments when the PCBA staff asked forfeed back. Marc Glogower of Danielle Fence said " The turnout was awesome. We need to do this everymonth!" Roger and Jolynn Atherton of Counter Effects by Roger said they wrote a contract the Monday afterFirst Friday with a gentleman who stopped by their table. He told them he had specifically came to First Fridayto talk with a vendor in a relaxed atmosphere. They wrote a second contract in the days that followed. ErnieWhite Construction, Magnify Credit Union, Stinsons Home Design Center, Lennar Homes, Two Men and ATruck, and Travis Resmondo Sod all reported positive activity as a result of their participation in First Friday.A suggestion was made that PCBA do some type of a drawing to give away a door prize. People could reg-ister at a table in the center of Munn Park. This would be a good incentive to draw them into the Park, andmake sure that they visited all of the displays.

Reserve your space now!

As the weather already starts to heat up we find ourselves closelyapproaching the summertime. I hope this first half of the year has

treated everyone as well as can be expected. We still find ourselves fightingthrough rough times, and constantly adapting to stay afloat. It’s more impor-tant now than ever that we stay united as members of the PCBA. During goodtimes and bad we will always face issues that need to be addressed. ThePCBA provides its members a voice to unite behind in order to meet commongoals and needs. I would encourage everyone to stay committed to being apart of the committee meetings held at the PCBA. As Chairman of the BuilderLiaison Committee, I would like to invite you to our next meeting scheduled forJune 2nd at 9:30 a.m. We provide a forum to discuss construction issues thatmight affect us all, and also provides an opportunity to have open discussionwith our local Building Officials. To Our Builders Association Members:

Having the honor of serving as your chairman of the PCBA Foundation excites me because of the many things we

are doing. We are planning many events that follow a tradition of giving to our community. This year is no exception!

We just completed the 8th successful Future Builder of America (FBA) Leadership Camp held in Haines City and are

now zeroing in on the 16th Annual Blueprint and Model Competition. This competition generates participants from

local high schools and technical schools here in Polk County. Since the foundations conception, we have given in kind

contributions and scholarships totaling over $130,000.00. These achievements require not only men and women

donating countless hours but it also takes generous people to make this all possible.

I encourage you to attend the Blueprint and Model Competition event scheduled for Tuesday, May 10,

2011 and will be held at George Jenkins High School at 5:30 p.m., this is a free event. Please RSVP to

[email protected]. We are anticipating 20 student entries. This is a great event to attend year after year or

an excellent event to attend for the first time. This event captures the essence of our mission. Students’

blueprints and models will be awarded prizes and members of the PCBA, School Board, Teachers and Student

will all be present to celebrate.

Our Foundation, just like most businesses has had to make cut backs and changes in what we can do and

accomplish. As we move forward through this year we really need support. We need your financial support to

continue with these great programs! Every dollar is greatly appreciated and over $ .90 of every dollar goes directly

into the community and students. Few other organizations can claim this kind of efficiency!

From one dollar to thousands of dollars please take the time and send in a donation to the PCBA Foundation.

With a phone call to Pat or Michelle (863-665-0844) it can be placed on your credit card or you may mail your

donation to:

PCBA Foundation 2232 Heritage Drive

Lakeland, Florida 33801

Please send your donation as soon as possible. Our programs are depending on your support. You may call me or

e-mail me with any additional questions. Maybe you would like to serve on our committee?

Thank you in advance for your ongoing support of our association and our community.

Sincerely,

ChuckChuck Hunt Jr. President

...a special networking event for women members and guests this May 25th from5-7:30 p.m. This event will inform the women in the building industry about theProfessional Women in Building council. Women make up over 40% of the NAHBmembership and over 80% of these women are in senior management level posi-tions, owners, CEO'S and other positions that support our industry.

The NAHB Professional Women in Building Council is the voice of women in thebuilding industry, dedicated to promoting professionalism and supporting our

members at the local, state and national levels with networking and educational opportunities, leg-islative awareness and outreach, and professional and personal development. The vision of PWBis the premier professional organization that provides strategies and solutions for women in the build-ing industry. Through our various publications, awards, scholarships, seminars and programs, wegive women the advantage necessary to excel and succeed. Our members also receive recognitionfor their contribution made to the home building industry and homeownership. The purpose and goalsof the PWB are to provide professional development resources to the members, to encourage careerdevelopment within our industry, to promote and support active involvement in the political and leg-islative process and community involvement. The PWB also provides recognition of member achieve-ments and resource and support information for our members, affiliated councils, and NAHB mem-bers.

Florida does not have a member council through any of it's builder associations, so all PWB mem-bers are considered Members At Large. All members, whether through an association council or asmembers at large, are invited to join and participate. This women's council provides local and statenetworking opportunities for members and guests. Our ultimate goal is to find enough women mem-bers to create our first Florida PWB council and we already have a group of women leading the way. Some of the members of PC BA who are already members and are interested in getting more PCBAmembers involved.

The event will be held at the PCBA building from 5 until 7:30 on May 25th. The theme is to celebrateour patriotism by recognizing Memorial Day. Everyone attending will bring a favorite dish to share andis one of your favorite dishes for the Memorial Day weekend festivities. Bring your favorite BBQwings, dessert or salad to share with other women with an interest to be active and involved in theNAHB.

Specific information about the council and how you get involved will be presented by some of ourlocal PWB members. We hope to see you there.
