A story to start with…One day we travelled to a tiny village called Manapad with the aim of making a

palm leaf pendant lamp similar to the one that a famous home furnishing company in Europe

makes and sells for $120 dollars. It was an ambitious project as the weaving itself was

extremely complicated to comprehend in the first place. Our artisans as expected couldn’t

make something out of the design – Initially.

But within a week’s time they not only managed to make a replica of it, but they

also made a completely newer design product based on it which we assure you looks so much

better (Product on cover page). The price of it?? $60! Half the price, double the appeal. That’s

what Mayjai represents. Good quality products, at cheaper price using eco-friendly materials

made by poor rural artisans and entrepreneurs.

Batik is a cloth that traditionally uses a manual wax-resist dyeing technique. These skirts

are an excellent example of how handmade fabrics can still have the same look and

appeal compared to printed fabrics. Batik painting in India is a dying trade. A group of

women from a tiny village in Tamil Nadu perform this craft with great care.
