Casey Ball, CEO of Casey Ball Supports Coordination (CBSC), helps people like Thomas Skidmore get the support they need to live safely at home and maintain their quality of life.

As we grow older, maintain-ing our freedom and inde-pendence is just as important to us as it was in our younger years. A big part of this free-dom is being able to live at home and remain active in the community that we’ve grown to know and love.

L iv ing independent ly doesn’t mean you have to go do it alone. Services and supports are available to

help provide you with ev-erything from home health care, non-medical transpor-tation, home modifications and assistive technologies all aimed at making your life easier. With so many options available, what’s the easiest way to navigate all of this and figure out which services you may need and possibly qualify for under Pennsyl-vania’s Waivers Programs?

This is the mission of a com-pany called Casey Ball Sup-ports Coordination, or CBSC. “We help individuals navi-gate the red tape and get the things they need to stay safe, stay at home and maintain their quality of life,” says owner and CEO Casey Ball. Long-Term Living, Pennsylvania De-partment of Aging Waivers Programs and under the Adult Autism Waiver.

“These services assist participants in gaining access to needed Waiver/Program services and other state plan services, as well as medical, social, edu-cational and other services regardless of the funding source,” Casey explains. “Service coordination is working with and at the direction of the participant whenever possible to identify, co-ordinate and facilitate these Waiver services. That’s what we do.”

The first step is getting an assessment and determining eligibility. “We take time with each person to identify their needs and we do this with a personal touch that makes the individual feel comfortable. Our coordinators listen to the needs and wants of the individual. We help them understand the guide-lines and become enrolled, if eligible.

The result is that they receive the best services for keeping them in their homes and enjoying fulfilling lives.”

Thomas Skidmore, 42, of Baldwin Township has continually received Adult Autism Waiver (AAW) services since 2010 and has worked with CBSC since 2011. Through CBSC’s sup-portive efforts and additional community inclusion services, as well as behavioral specialist services provided through AAW, he has achieved the means to live on his own, where he maintains a consistent level of success in most aspects of his life, including financial and personal.

To qualify for Aging Waiver, you must be a Pennsylvania resident age 60 and older, meet the level of care needs for a skilled nursing facility home and meet financial requirements as determined by the local county assistance office. Once you qualify, you are able to choose the service providers that you deem worth to assist you. CBSC’s trained service coordina-tors can help you navigate and select services, then develop a plan to set up and organize those services on your behalf.

What kinds of services are available? Here’s an overview:

4 Personal Assistance Services: Help with activities of daily living such as bathing, cooking, shopping and light house cleaning.

4 Community Integration: Tools for living independently, like learning how to find public transportation at a new place of residency.

4 Home Modifications: Help with adapting your place of residency so that you have greater mobility and ease with everyday activities. Modifications could include stair glides, vertical lifts, roll-in showers, automatic door openers, toilet seats raises, grab bars, an elevator, front entrance ramp and converting a home for wheelchair access.

4 Durable Medical Equipment: Adaptive equipment that can make your life easier, such as hearing aides, shower benches, bedside commodes, walkers and canes, scooters and wheelchairs, standing and positioning devices, augmented communication devices and computers with special hard-ware or software.

4 Personal Emergency Response System: This device can assist you if there is a need for emergency help and no one is at home.

4 Non-Medical Transportation: Assistance with traveling to and from appointments that are non-medical in nature, such as trips to the grocery store or pharmacist.

4 Coordination of Non-Waiver Services: Help with finding and accessing services that are not part of the Waiver, such as finding a doctor or a dentist and applying for job training.

Services are monitored on an ongoing basis to ensure that you are living the best quality of life.

To inquire about services, call Lester Bennett at (412) 793-0200 or email Casey Ball at [email protected]. To learn more, visit www.cbscllc.org. BCSN

Keen-Age News . . . For Beaver County’s Active Seniors

May 2015 • Beaver County Senior News

By Angela Gentile, Planning Unit Program Monitor Beaver County Office on Aging For Beaver County Senior News

What would you like to see in the future?

Do you remember the cartoon “The Jetsons”? George Jetson and his

family lived in a futuristic environ-ment set in the year 2060. They zipped around in a flying saucer with a bubble over it. Do you think that’s the future for our transportation? Cars have come a long way with technology. Now they can beep when you are backing up and are getting too close to something be-hind you. They can parallel park with-out you steering. Phone calls and text messages can come through the radio.

What does the future hold? Well, I read that by 2020, there’s a possibility that we will have flying vehicles. I’m not sure that’s for me. I drive an Impala, and it does have some of the newer bells and whistles, including Sirius radio, OnStar and phone capabilities. For right now I’m comfortable leaving the flying to airplane pilots.

* If you have a cell phone, wouldn’t it be great if you didn’t have to worry

Beaver County History Tidbits

4 In the 1790s, many years before Midland Borough was formed, tracts of land in the area had some colorful names, such as the Ohio Adonis, Apollo’s Retreat, Happy Retreat and Bachelor’s Delight.

4 Big Knob, a dome-shaped hill in New Sewickley Township, is Beaver County’s highest point at 1,382 feet.

4 Beaver County was formed in 1800 from parts of Allegheny and Wash-ington counties. There were just six municipalities: the townships of North Beaver, South Beaver, Sewickley, First Moon, Second Moon and Hanover. Today, there are 54 municipalities. BCSN

about charging it daily? I wonder if the future holds a better way for charg-ing cell phones, such as solar charged phones. Now only if there was enough sunshine! Or it would be great to have a cell phone that does not need to be charged at all. Better yet, I wish cell phones could be used worldwide without paying extra fees for roaming charges, data and overage charges. Nevertheless, the convenience and speed of a cell phone sure does beat the old rotary dial phones.

* Many of you have an iPad or a com-puter. I have a laptop computer, but wouldn’t it be great if our computers would quietly update the programs on the computer without telling us “ready for install” or asking us “do you want to install this program now?” The pop-up boxes have weird messages that are hard to understand and are sometimes scary because they can say “warning this might contain a virus.” These updates and warnings can be exhausting! Computers, iPads, cell phones and tablets are here to stay, and I think, the future holds even more electronic advances. Let’s hope they become simpler.

* Have you looked at your cable bill lately? Wow! It can be costly and yet we don’t even get all the channels. We

should be able to select all the channels that we want. I would select some of the Italian, travel, DIY and home decorat-ing channels and eliminate so many sports and news channels. Wouldn’t you like the opportunity to make your own channel selections in the future?

* What I really want is slower growing grass! If you have a yard, you probably wish for the same thing. It would make me happy to only have to cut the grass just once a month. Oops, I should say my retired friend would be happy if he only had to cut my grass once or twice a summer. Maybe the future holds a product to slow down grass growing. It would be the opposite of the product Miracle Grow, which I use in my gar-den. I’m keeping my fingers crossed!

What do older adults want for the future? Most likely your answers will vary greatly. Maybe you hope for faster airplane flights or more nonstop flights to visit family around the country and the world. One person told me that she would like to have tour groups with everyone over age 70 so the pace of the trip could be a bit slower. I thought that was an excellent idea. All of our wishes generally depend on people who come up with crazy, creative ideas to craft, en-gineer and invent products and services to make our world a better place. BCSN

Farewell and good luck to Beaver County Office on Aging admin-istrator Beverly Sullivan, who

retired April 10 after serving 10 years in this position. During her tenure at BCOA, she helped plan and develop the Center at the Mall senior commu-nity center, expand the Senior Gardens and support the development of the handicapped accessible garden, and work with BeaverLINK to bring 211 to Beaver County.

BCOA’s administrator retires She served on the Pennsylvania As-sociation of Area Agencies on Aging Board of Directors, Beaver County Collaborative Action Network Board, Homeless Coalition Board, Penn State Psychology Advisory Board and Penn State Extension Board of Directors.

Beverly said she was most proud of the staff, noting that everywhere she went, she would receive complimen-tary remarks on the help provided by the workers.

She graduated from West Virginia University and has worked in social services for 42 years. Prior to coming to BCOA, she was the administrative director at Mental Health in Rochester. While there, she wrote the grant which brought the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) to Beaver County in 1985. Also, she was the director of se-nior services at the Medical Center in Beaver, and was the director at Beaver County Catholic Charities.

After working in social services dur-ing her career, she watched programs

cycle and come back newly revised to meet current standards. There has been more consideration and rights of consumers to be involved in their services received. Previously, services tended to be provided on a medical model; now services are more person-centered. More programs, including Ombudsman, mental health services and hospices, are starting to use peer-to-peer services to help people cope with issues, and she thinks this is good for individuals.

Beverly and her husband of 30 years, Tony Kofalt, reside in Brighton Town-ship. She has a lot of plans to get started on in retirement. She plans to paint the interior of her home and try painting some furniture. She enjoys entertain-ing, cooking out, bird watching and gardening. She and Tony are planning some day trips, which include riding a coal-fired steam engine train and seeing the elk in Elk County. Plus, she looks for-ward to enjoying time with her daughter Lorraine, son Timothy and three cats, Pumpkin, Rocket and Sox. BCSN

In-home services are available for Beaver County residents ages 60 and older to help them remain

living in the community. Services obtained under the Options program are based on need and are not entitle-ments. A call to the Information and Referral Department initiates the process. The case is then assigned to a care manager, who will schedule an initial home visit.

There are several steps in the process to receive service, including a level-of-care determination/assessment, financial verification of income and assets, needs assessment and de-velopment of the care plan. In some cases, the care manager must obtain a physician’s certification from the person’s doctor. No services can be initiated until after verification of the previous year’s income and current

In-home services available through Beaver County Office on Aging

assets are provided. Some applicants will need to share in the cost of their services. In some cases, a PA 600 ap-plication for Medical Assistance must be completed. The care manager will discuss other programs that might be of benefit, such as the Aging Waiver or LIFE programs.

Available Options services include assistance with light housekeeping, laundry and shopping. Assistance

with cleaning is only provided when the person lives alone or with their spouse. Help is also available for bathing, dressing, grooming and toileting. Home-delivered meals can be provided for those who are home-bound and unable to prepare nutri-tious meals with no one available to assist them.

Adult day services can provide supervision and socialization for those with dementia or depression at one of three sites: Valley Care in Ambridge or Moon Township and LIFE in Center Township. Assistance with transportation to the site can be provided. Respite care is available for caregivers unable to leave their loved ones alone, but they need a break once or twice a week to take care of errands or just have some time alone. Personal Emergency Response units are available for those living alone, frail and at very high risk of falls. In some cases, assistance can be given in the form of medical equipment and supplies, such as incontinence supplies and raised toilet seats. Home modifications that enable the individual to remain at home are sometimes provided.

The Caregiver Support Program can provide unpaid caregivers with edu-cation, support, a yearly recognition luncheon and financial reimburse-ment for preapproved purchases. Regardless of the service needed, every individual has an assigned care manager who will provide support, information and assistance through-out the process. The care manager will follow up after services are initiated and will make regular phone calls and scheduled home visits to monitor the case. BCSN

I don’t know about you but spring cleaning is not one of my favorite things

about this season. Cleaning closets, however, can be an uplifting experience! When you clean out your closet, pull out all of the shoes, purs-es and gently worn cloth-ing and consider donating

Spring cleaning season is perfect time to donate your unworn clothing

it to Professional Outfitters and Variety Shoppe.

The shoes will be sent to an organization called Funds-2Org. From there, they will be used to benefit microen-terprise ventures in devel-oping nations. The shoes’

condition does not matter; their material can still be used for other things.

Bring your donated items to one of the two drop-off locations: Franklin Center of Beaver County, located at 524 Franklin Avenue in Aliquippa; or Professional Outfitters and Variety Shop-pe, 1035 Third Avenue in New Brighton.

Do you belong to a church, civic organizations or a busi-ness? RSVP will be happy to provide a collection box for shoe donations at your facility. To arrange, call (724) 378-7547.

Now that you have cleaned out the closest, what better

way to freshen up those spring outfits than with a new designer purse? Join Professional Outfitters and Center at the Mall for our second annual Purse Gala from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 13 at Cen-ter at the Mall, located at 284 Beaver Valley Mall in Monaca. Lunch will be served at noon. Tickets are $25 and only 200 tickets will be sold.

Each ticket gives you five chances to win a designer purse. Enjoy a wine tasting, basket auctions, vendor dis-plays and more. To purchase a ticket, call (724) 378-7547 or visit Center at the Mall. BCSN

Bad relationships

Two ladies were out shopping when they started to discuss their home lives, one said, “Seems like all Alfred and I do anymore is fight. I’ve been so upset I’ve lost 20 pounds.”

“Why don’t you just leave him then?” asked her friend.

“Oh! Not yet.” the first replied, “I’d like to lose at least another fifteen pounds first.”

Joe decides to take his boss Phil to play 9 holes on their lunch. While both men are playing excellent they are often held up by two women in front of them moving at a very slow pace. Joe offers to talk to the women and see if they can speed it up a bit. He gets about half of the way there stops and jogs back.

His boss asks what the problem is. “Well one of those women is my wife and the other my mistress,” complained Joe. Phil just shook his head at Joe and started toward the women determined to finish his round of golf. Preparing to ask the ladies to speed up their game, he too stopped short and turned around.

Joe asked “what’s wrong?” It’s a small, small world Joe, and you’re fired.”
