Garry’s Did You Know?

by Garry Chin

As we head into summer, please note that summer is all things good for koi. It is the time of year that they put on the most growth. The koi are very active and as a result have their hardiest appetites. So here is what I do during this time of year for my pond and Koi. Pond management activities are heavily concentrated on the filtration system to remove solid waste from the system. If this is not done, then the end result is that the koi are basically swimming in a toilet. The bead filters and bio-filter are regularly drained of detritus and the strainer baskets are kept free of debris. My filtration system has two of everything so I can clean one filter rather heavily and let the second seed the freshly cleaned filter. During this period feeding of the koi is gradually increased until they are being fed every two hours. The dry food given to the koi is a mixture of several types. Some food is high in protein, vegetable ingredients and immune system strengthening ingredients. Some of the dry food is the floating type, while the majority of the food is the sinking type. During the day an automatic feeder dispenses food into the pond for the koi. Twice a day, I feed my koi homemade food that has been previously prepared and frozen. The food is then defrosted and cubed for feeding to the koi. During this time of year, the koi are given various treats in the form of citrus fruits, lettuce, Manda Fu and silk worm pupae. To prevent the koi from becoming obese they are constantly exercised from jets built into the pond. During this time the water is also aerated via venturis built into the jets. Over the years this regimen has resulted in some young koi attaining 4-8” growth in a season. Because I want to maximize the growth of my koi for the year, I do not show my koi during the summer. This time of the year exposed water can become very warm. My pond has a cover over it, which helps keep the water temperature down. Some other things to think about this time of year is that the nitrification probably lags behind so the additional feeding should be done gradually otherwise water parameters such as nitrite or ammonia will be higher than normal. Depending on how strong your Koi immune system is they can be susceptible to various parasites, so you need to keep a close eye on them. If you have a Koi related question or want to discuss a Koi related topic and you do not see me at a club meeting or activity, the best way to contact me is via e-mail at [email protected].
