PRAYER AT HOME: One of the greatest prayers about being a peace maker is the prayer of St. Francis of Assisi: Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy. O divine master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console, to be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned, and in dying that we are born to eternal life.

VOCATION VIEW: How much would the world be changed if everyone were completely forgiving? Probably totally!

Jesus' stories of forgiveness are so loved because they are so needed. Re-tell them! Re-live them!

GOSPEL REFLECTION: Harden not your Heart

‘O that today you would listen to his voice. Harden not your hearts.’ From a spiritual point of view, hardness of heart is one of the worst things that can happen to anyone. To adopt a hard-hearted attitude is to maim oneself. A hard heart can’t feel, can’t respond, can’t love. A hard heart can’t experience joy. A hard heart is a closed heart. A hard heart is a barren heart. A soft heart, on the other hand, is a blessing. A soft heart can receive and can respond. It can be saddened but it can also be deliriously happy. Softened by the rain of God’s grace, and warmed by the sun of his love, the human heart can be turned from a desert into a garden. Flor McCarthy, SDB

PROPOSED LEGISLATION TO LEGALISE ASSISTED SUICIDE AND EUTHANASIA Fellow Parishioners, Thankyou for the response and actions so far in our letter-writing Campaign against the

Proposed Legislation to legalise assisted suicide and euthanasia. We have been given more time, and, hence, shall be continuing with this for another week or so. Indications, from last weekend, show a need for more

participants in this important exercise. For those who have not yet done so, please take a writing pack home and write to our Parliamentarians in support of the “NO” Campaign? Letters may be returned next weekend.

VOLUNTEERS – PLEASE NOTE: CHILD SAFE ENVIRONMENT DIRECT TRAINING BOOKINGS NOW OPEN A child safe and child friendly culture is one in which awareness is maximised and risk minimised. As champions of this culture, all Parish staff, leaders, volunteers, priests and deacons should attend the Direct Training sessions. As part of the Archdiocese commitment to creating and maintaining a child safe environment, bookings for the ‘Direct Training’ sessions are open. Rev. Deacon Anil Roshan Mascarenhas is being ordained to the Catholic Priesthood with Rev. Deacon Toan Nguyen, Saturday, 9

th September 2017 at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Melbourne. I will be attending the

ordination on behalf of our Parish of St. Andrew’s. Fr. Anil will arrive at our Parish on Thursday, 16th

November 2017 as Assistant Priest.

Please continue to pray for Fr. Shymon and Fr. Anil as they take up their new pastoral role in the two Parishes of the Archdiocese of Melbourne, Mernda and Werribee. Fr. Frank P.P.

January 2018 and from that day he will be known as Pastor Emeritus. “What is a Pastor Emeritus?” “Emeritus is an honorary title bestowed upon one who has retired from a position (pastor, priest, professor, or other professional position) as a way of honoring the individual’s service. Emeritus comes from the Latin word emereri, which means to earn one’s discharge by service. Bestowing the title “Pastor Emeritus” upon a retiring priest is a way for the church leadership to honor his service to the Church.”

POSTAL PLEBISCITE ON SAME-SEX MARRIAGE – The Australian Government has announced there will be a postal plebiscite on whether the definition of marriage in the Marriage Act 1961 should be changed to include same-sex marriage. Ballot papers will be sent out to households on Tuesday, 12th September 2017 and all votes must be received back by Tuesday, 7th November 2017. Vote No, to keep marriage as a unique relationship between a woman and a man. Archbishop Hart has written a Pastoral Letter to the Catholic community of Melbourne in relation to the upcoming postal ballot on same-sex marriage. He says, “Given the importance of this matter could I also ask you to encourage your people to vote on this very important issue.” The letter can be found on-line at: http://melbournecatholic.org.au/ or on the Altar steps.

BAPTISM PREPARATION FOR PRIMARY SCHOOL AGED CHILDREN (RCIC)

There will be an enrolment meeting on Saturday, 23rd September 2017 at 4pm in the Penola Hub, 33 Mortimer Street, Werribee. As well as enrolling children, we will explain the program which will run on the following Sunday mornings: 15th October, 22nd October, 29th October, 12th November and 19th November 2017. These sessions will run from 9.45am to 10.45am, followed by attendance at 11am Mass. The children

will participate in the Children’s Liturgy of the Word during the Mass as part of their Christian learning experience. At least one parent is asked to attend each Sunday with their children. The last session will be held in the Church on Wednesday, 22nd November 2017 at 5pm to familiarise the children with the Church.

SENIORS AFTERNOON TEA

St. Andrews Parish would like to host a monthly Senior’s Afternoon Tea to enable our seniors to meet and socialise. This would be suitable for all seniors, male and female. Transport is available for those unable to drive. If you are interested in joining others in this social gathering or know of someone who would benefit, we would be happy to hear from you.

We are also looking for volunteers who would be interested in helping with transport or with the food and set up on the day. We are hoping to hold the afternoon tea on the fourth Wednesday of the month, 2.00pm – 3.30pm, commencing 27th September 2017 to be held at the Penola Hub, 33 Mortimer Street, Werribee.
