Horse Race / Shootout Thursday, May 8 & May 22 at 5:00 PMCost: $5 per person

This event is a great time! It’s almost full contact golf as your competitors egg you on, sometimes in your back-swing.

Two-person teams alternate their shots while the high-scoring teams are eliminated on each hole until there are only three teams left. Out of those three teams, we will award a “Win” (1st Place), “Place” (2nd Place), and a “Show” (3rd Place). Serious golfers should leave their sensitive side at home for this event; we like to have fun!

Maricopa County Adopt A Highway Programs Welcome New Volunteer Groups From Sun City Festival

The Maricopa County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) welcomed the Sun City Festival Pickleball Club and the Sun City Festival Tennis Club into the Adopt A Highway Program in February 2014. The two volunteer groups brought more than their enthusiasm and love for their community to their first clean ups along a four-mile stretch of Sun Valley Parkway in northwest Maricopa County. The Sun City Festival clubs’ 65 volunteers broke MCDOT’s roadway clean-up record by collecting more than 500 bags of trash, 150 tires, three televisions, several lawn chairs and even one half of a hot tub!

The Sun City Festival Citizens On Patrol also helped out by providing a vehicle with flashing lights on clean-up day to alert passing motorists to the presence of volunteers along the roadside.

MCDOT launched its Adopt a Highway program with the first volunteer group in 1990. The Sun City Festival groups now rank among more than 130 groups par-ticipating in this county program.

Adopt a Highway Volunteer groups choose a date twice a year to clean up their “adopted” section of County roadway and MCDOT installs roadside signage that features the adopting group’s name. On scheduled cleanup days, MCDOT provides temporary traffic signage, trash bags, safety information, safety glasses, gloves, and vests. Volunteers have the option to leave filled trash bags along the side of the road or have them picked up.

For more information, contact Alva Tovar, Adopt A Highway Program Coordinator at (602) 506-4068, email [email protected], or visit the program website http://www.mcdot.maricopa.gov/adopt/

Based on 2012 research, we lose 1% - 2% of our muscle each year after age 50 and 3% of our strength each year after age 60. The major culprit of this muscle and strength loss is a phenomenon called sarcopenia. Simply defined, sarcope-nia means age-related loss of muscle, strength, and function. Approximately 5 % - 13% of 60-70 year-olds, and 11% - 50% of 80+ year-olds have sarcopenia. In the big picture, sarcopenia translates to difficulty performing everyday tasks such as carrying groceries and suitcases, getting in and out of a chair, or any other activity requiring muscle strength.

Causes for sarcopenia are more than simply the aging process. One contributor to sarcopenia is reduced muscle activation. With inactivity (less use) the nerve cells activating the muscle fibers begin to die resulting in fewer muscle cells fir-ing during use. Muscle contractions which occur during exercise help maintain the firing of neurons and the use/recruitment of a maximal number of muscle fibers. This is the “use-it-or-lose” principle.

Another contributor to sarcopenia is diet. Numerous minerals and vitamins play important roles in nerve and muscle function. Appetite loss and diminished hunger response due to aging lead to an average 25% decrease in food intake between 40 and 70 years of age. With diminished food intake comes low levels of various nutrients. Research has shown greater frailty among elderly popula-tions with low levels of vitamin D, and linking sarcopenia with vitamin D insuffi-ciency. And, similar research has shown vitamin D supplementation can reduce the risk of falls in older people. A diet rich in antioxidants - fruits and vegetables - is recommended to minimize risks and development of sarcopenia.

Sarcopenia is not particular to either men or women and mostly a result of inac-tivity. Weight training, along with moderate and high-intensity car-diovascular exercise are great ways to counteract neural and muscular decay which comes from aging and inactivity. Recommendations are cardiovascular exercise most days of the week and weight training three times a week. As always, consult a physician prior to starting an exercise program.
