EYE Testing

This year, our school division will be implementing the Early Years Evaluation –

Direct Assessment (EYE-DA) for children starting kindergarten in fall 2013. All

Pre-kindergarten teachers have received specialized training and will spend time

with your child— one-to-one, observing his or her skills and abilities. This assess

ment takes about 45 minutes and includes a variety of play-based questions andhands-on activities; it is a lot of fun for children!

The EYE-DA is administered to incoming kindergarten children aged 4-5 years,as they prepare to make the transition into school. The purpose of this initiativeis to determine each child’s development in these four key areas:

1. Awareness of Self and Environment;

2. Cognitive Skills;

3. Language and Communication; and,

4. Physical Development.

Parents/Caregivers will receive a copy of their child’s results after the as-sessment is complete, including information on the four key areas.

In an effort to meet each child’s learning needs, results of the EYE-DA can beused by educators to plan instruction for the entire class, for small groups andfor individual student needs. If you would l ike more information about the EYE-

DA, please visit www.earlyyearsevaluation.com or contact your classroom teacher.
