President’s Notes Suddenly summer arrives…along with construction season! Bikes
are out everywhere – it is really great to see the number of riders
on the roads again. Unfortunately, this spring has been a deadly
one for motorcyclists – 3 killed in 5 weeks…all due to the fault of
other drivers. Please folks, be vigilant about your safety. Be aware
of your surroundings – 360 degrees around you and anticipate
what everyone else is doing. Keep a sharp eye in your rear view
mirrors for distracted/texting drivers. As motorcyclists we know
the risks of riding…and we are prepared to take those risks to
enjoy what we love doing. Obviously we cannot be safe enough
when on the two wheels…so do everything in your power to keep
yourself safe.
Thanks to the club members who rode together to Treasurer Sarah
and Joe’s wedding celebration. There were 21 who were treated to
a wonderful BBQ buffet. Our club has treated Sarah & Joe to their
Rally attendance, complete with Rally shirts! Congratulations Sarah
& Joe!
The 18th annual Bison Rally is upon us right away: June 22-24 in
Carman. It is shaping up to be a terrific event again with all the
usual fun events scheduled, including the awesome games and
incredible food served (with the addition of a hot breakfast Sunday
morning). Clarence has worked hard on putting together the event
with his trusty team…and has even secured a “Test Our Metal”
visit by Harley-Davidson Canada on the Saturday. This is a great
opportunity to ride a 2018 HD – many models will be there – and to
have a ride courtesy of HD Canada. The guys are even tossing in a
$200 donation to our club – bonus!
And speaking of donations & HDs, we have had some responses
for those with HDs (vintage and modern) who will attend the July
7th HD display at Club Regent Casino. The Casino wants 35 Harleys
there for an outdoor Show n Shine from noon to 4pm…for this they
are providing each guest with a food and beverage voucher, plus a
casino credit. They are also providing $1,000 to the AMCM to
thank-us for our attendance! We have had a limited response from
our club so far, so we will share the event particulars with the
CVMG and CMMG. We want to ensure a turnout of at least 35
bikes…please contact Kim to advise of your attendance
([email protected]). I know Kim and I will be there on two
of our HDs, and we have a 3rd that would be available to be ridden
to the show…hmmm…who would pay to see John Thompson riding
an outrageously loud in pipes and colour HD covered in skulls?!!!
The photo ops are gold in themselves :D
This is a busy summer for our club again. Lots of events are
planned and noted in the sanctioned ride list. I hope the
membership attendance to signature events such as the Rally,
Corn Roast and Tiddler Run is very strong…and also for the many
others that we have.
See you at the June 19th meeting and again at the Rally!
Keep Calm and Rally & Ride On! Rick

The Dunlop Trophy What is the Dunlop Trophy??? It was a trophy awarded annually to the winner of
the Reliability Run which started in 1911.
These members were hands on in the rescue and restoration of the Dunlop Trophy
that hung in the MMC clubhouse that was destroyed by fire, From left to right is
Ross Metcalfe, John Thompson , David Pritchard and Siggi Klann. Not shown is
Tom Wilcock an Ontario member who provided us with the missing Motorcycle.
Great job guys.
What is the meaning of the hands on the Dunlop Trophy.
The hands were a symbol of Dunlop Tire and came with a caption
that said “These are the only tools you will ever need”.

AMCM Moment of silence for Robyn Gray
A moment of silence was observed for Robyn Gray at the May 2018 meeting of
the AMCM. Robyn was involved in a multivehicle accident while riding his
motorcycle on Garvin Road on May 2018.
You won’t find Robyn in our roster, but the AMCM was one of many
motorcycle related organizations he contributed his time and knowledge to.
It was a sign of respect from our club and those who knew him personally to
recognise the loss of a fellow motorcycle enthusiast. Harley’s and
Henderson’s were his antique motorcycle marquee of choice. Robyn on
occasion would join our AMCM rides and make appearances at movie nights
at Ross’s and Keith’s. Many of us will remember him attending our annual
auction for Spina Bifida a couple years back and donating a large dealer
exclusive Harley Davidson 100th Anniversary banner. Robyn is a significant
part of Manitoba motorcycling history. Why did he have a large Harley
banner distributed to dealers? Because he owned a Harley Davidson
dealership after being awarded a franchise by Fred Deeley Imports in 1978.
5
It was located on Corydon Avenue before moving to a new building on Goulet
Ave. Prior to the HD dealership he was with Bob’s Cycle on Portage Ave.
Whether you knew him or not, it was obvious when he walked into any
motorcycle related event that he was somebody in Manitoba motorcycle
culture. He looked the part for sure, but someone in every crowd greeted him
by name because of his participation in all that is motorcycle and the
relationships that he developed in his lifetime. He always made extra effort to
make all feel welcome at any event he organized or attended. It is no
coincidence that he was a major force in the creation of The Coalition of
Manitoba Motorcycle Groups CMMG. In fact he gave a free CMMG
membership to anyone who bought a new bike at his dealership.
Decades of riding and commitment to motorcycling in Manitoba produced the
following lengthy resume. It is a long list and every time you speak of Robyn
it seems to lengthen so don’t take this as an exhaustive list. He was a
motorcycle enthusiast, shop owner, manufacturer dealer, show promoter, ride
organizer, legislative lobbyist, Classic Motorcycle collector, businessman,
wrench, racer, bike builder…
Perhaps a good sample of the many stories to share and a fond memory would
be of Robyn and his trusty sidekick “Buddy” who would lead his many rides
throughout Manitoba from Easter weekend to Remembrance Day. His annual
Remembrance Day ride was held in honor of Canadian veterans. Freedom
and the recognition of veterans for their sacrifices was something Robyn was
passionate about and he reminded us every year with his ride regardless of
the November weather in Manitoba. Great pics of vintage wartime dispatch
riders, or his bikes covered in snow would be broadcast by email to
announce the ride. He would make special effort to include anyone who
wanted to ride. A recent Easter weekend ride invitation started with
“Everyone is invited to my annual Good Friday ride…” He would have
everyone meet at his “retreat” and have hot coffee ready for a cold ride. The
rides would go on no matter the weather.
A spontaneous and beautiful tribute to Robyn is located on the roadside on
Garvin Road. Along with the marker, pictures, and flowers was a carefully
placed cup of coffee for Robyn for the ride.
The AMCM sends it’s condolences to Robyn’s family and many close friends.

LIFE IN MEXICO
A Message from Larry Woolley
Here are a few pictures I took of the bikes that turn up Sunday afternoon at the Malacon ( lake
front) here in Chapala. They ride in from Guadalajara a city of over 25 miles away to cool off
as the city temps are 10 to 15 degrees hotter than the 25 to 30 degrees by the lake waters.
Not all Mexicans are poor, some a VERY rich as you can see from their rides. Some have VW
trikes of every sort, so old VW parts are easy to get here as you will see. This was taken last
Sunday 22 April, see NO snow only wonderful Summer days, this is our life here from late
October to late June when the rains arrive. When they do one must be under cover by 4 pm to 9
am, then the sun comes out to fry things out till evening when the cycle of rain starts again.
9
I got the new bike today! April 26/18
What's to say, the dealer wished me a safe ride, he will get me a spare key and a info book, my luck it will be in Spanish, might as well be in Greek! I found out the beast is a hard rider, is hard to toss around, makes my hands tingle too. At 120 plus kph it sort of softens out a bit, the neutral indicator is very hard to find when the bike is HOT. I have to turn it off to put it in neutral, it is not a city driver. MY Vespa 300 would leave it in dust in the city up to 50 mph or 90 kph. The Moto is a beast, as you say, how ever go into the mountains, IF I can ever learn the power spots and gears, it will be a blast in Mexico!
Here is Larry Wooley. He has
been a member of the AMCM/
MMC for several years.
Currently he holds the record for
riding his Ural to every meeting in
2015. He has now moved to
Mexico, a warmer climate.

DID YOU KNOW??? Most AMCM members have seen founder member Ross M riding his 1942 WLC Harley
Davidson in parades and various club runs and outings. But DID YOU KNOW that Ross has a
another 1943 WLC and yet another 1943 WLC with Military sidecar???
The WLC ("C" for Canadian) 45 cu inch (740cc) flat-head side-valve V twin was made by
special order for the Canadian Armed Forces by the Milwaukee factory, and differs from the
WLA (A for American) model in several ways. Most noticeable is the toolbox on the front
mudguard necessitating a higher headlight mounting. A "snorkel" type special
crankcase breather to stop water getting in and an oil-bath air filter, were also Canadian
specifications. Ross' also has the leather scabbard for a British-made Sten Gun.
The WLA's were issued with US-made Thompson Machine Guns. Ross actually has
a genuine (plugged) Sten Gun, which he has displayed in the scabbard occasionally. The
Canadians also ordered 18" same sized front and back wheels so that they would be
interchangeable, whereas the Americans had different sized wheels. The Canadian 1st Army
took part in the liberation of France, Belgium and Holland in 1944-45 and invariably it was the
Canadian troops who rode in first on their WLC's. The Dutch christened it "The Liberator"
whilst the American WLA was known as "The bike that won the war"

Blast from the past History of the 1912-1931 Henderson Four
I don’t have a Motorcycle Matters this time but here is a little history on the
Henderson Motorcycle.
Henderson was one of the most important early American motorcycle
manufacturers. Brothers Tom and William Henderson founded the company in
Detroit in 1912. Tom had previously worked for Winton cars, and William served as
the designer.
All Hendersons were in-line four-cylinder designs, and early models were notable
for their long cylindrical gas tanks between two horizontal tubes and their extended
frames with an alloy footplate ahead of the engine itself. On this were two pedals,
either of which operated the solitary rear brake. Interestingly, the two-seater model
actually placed the passenger in front of the driver.
The first Henderson engines were 965 cc F-head designs, with overhead inlet and
side exhaust valves. The engine had three main bearings, splash lubrication and a
side hand-crank for starting. Timing gears were easily accessible in front, and
ignition was by Bosch magneto. The clutch at the rear was connected to the chain
via bevel gear.
Carl Clancy was the first motorcyclist to ride around the world in 1912. His
Henderson is the only 1912 model known to exist, in a museum in Iowa. In 1913, the
company moved the pillion behind the rider and increased the engine to 1,064 cc,
while the round tank became flat-sided. Henderson’s 1914 models offered a Thor
two-speed rear hub, and full-pressure lubrication came in 1916. For 1917,
Henderson added a three-speed gearbox and trailing-link front forks.
In 1917, Schwinn bought Henderson and the company therefore became part of the
Excelsior empire. The side-valve Model K was introduced in 1920 and would
continue to the end of Henderson production. Leading link forks were adopted in
1928, and a five-main bearing F-head engine in 1929, when the model K was
divided into KJ standard and KL super sports. Motorcycle production halted in 1931
and Schwinn went back to bicycles.
The Hendersons, meanwhile, had started building the new Ace four-cylinder
motorcycle in 1919, seeking a lighter and faster design. The F-head engine was
now 1,220 cc, in unit with a three-speed hand-shift gearbox. Lubrication was by
pressure and splash systems, and the finished bikes were painted dark blue.
Cannonball Baker halved his 1912 Coast-to-coast Indian record on a 1922 Ace in 6
days 22 hours, 52 minutes, but William Henderson was sadly killed later that year
testing a new model.
Arthur Lemon took the company’s helm and a new slim-line model was introduced
in 1923, setting a number of speed records – 129 mph from a solo, and 106 mph
with a sidecar. Financial problems dogged the company, however, and Ace
production stopped in 1924, restarted a couple of times, then was sold to Indian in
1927. Indian adapted the Ace to its own lineup and persevered with the four-
cylinder design for another 15 years to the dismay of its V-twin loyalists.
