Preserving Our Past; Forging Our Future; Centered On the Eucharist! It seems like yesterday that I introduced my theme and now find myself in the final stretch of my journey as your State Deputy! Linda and I are grateful for being given the opportunity to serve as your State Deputy. There is much from past accomplishments of our members that motivate us to reach up to greater heights as we look to forging our future as Brother Knights in Illinois. We take most comfort in knowing that all of us are strengthened and assured of our mission because our focus is “Centered on the Eucharist”. You make Illinois proud in all that you do; and, I believe because of you God’s smile shines brightly upon us!

Our Holy Father, Pope Francis, is now guiding us to fundamentally embrace the gospels as a source of how best to live our lives. At our most recent convention we had an opportunity to celebrate how many of our councils give witness to this brotherhood of Christ-like living. It is difficult to imagine what better association, other than the Church itself, to be part of what helps us to become better husbands, fathers, brothers and friends than the Knights of Columbus! Councils displayed great enthusiasm accepting awards for their accomplishments in programming and recruitment. The greatest enthusiasm is in the brotherhood expressed when members greeted old and new acquaintances. Linda and I always felt that convention is a grand family reunion; and, we look forward to it each year! We take comfort in knowing that being around brother Knights and their families creates a family of like-minded people. This is our opportunity to express Thank You to each and every one of you for letting us serve, for a while, as your State Deputy. STATE CHAPLAIN Most Rev. Joseph M. Siegel Auxiliary Bishop and Vicar General of Joilet Dear Brother Knights,

As we come near the end of another Fraternal Year and give the last push to reach our goals, we should pause to give thanks to God for the blessings and graces of the past 12 months. We usually evaluate the success of a year based on numbers - number of new members, amount of dollars raised and donated, number of programs sponsored, etc. These are important statistics as they help us gauge the effectiveness of our work and measure the fruitfulness of our time and effort. Yet, let's not forget to take into account the intangibles, those successes that can't be enumerated in a report. These would include growth in the spiritual life of our brothers due to participation in corporate communions, holy hours, honor guards, etc. Another intangible is the development in fraternity brought about by working together on a project, like Special Olympics, the Tootsie Roll drive, life chain or other such event. Also, we can never measure the satisfaction of knowing that many lives have be changed for the better because of the donations of funds and material goods made by our Councils to assist those in need. These are just a couple of the unseen graces and benefits that come with being an active Knight. Because they can't be measured in the usual way, we don't want to take them for granted or feel they aren't important. Rather, it is these intangibles that give life and spirit to all our efforts as Knights of Columbus. Thank you for all you have done this past Fraternal Year to help so many people. I hope you make time for relaxation and refreshment with your families in these summer months. Be assured of my prayers. As State Chaplain of the Knights of Columbus I wanted to share with you a project that I feel is very significant for the spiritual and pro- life efforts of our Order. St. Patrick’s parish in Yorkville, Illinois is building a shrine to honor the life of St. Gianna Beretta Molla. They are seeking support from the Knights of Columbus in conjunction with their own council, God’s Divine Mercy #14463 in Yorkville. St. Patrick Parish has embarked on this project to honor St. Gianna, patron saint for mothers, physicians and preborn children, with a life-sized statue, a seating area with benches, attractive lighting and a pedestrian footbridge. When complete, the shrine will be a prayerful place of reflection for those who wish to contemplate the love of this wife, mother and doctor. St. Gianna was born in Magenta, Italy, in 1922. She graduated medical school in 1949 and began practicing in the field of pediatric medicine. St. Gianna had three children and while expecting her fourth child, experienced complications that threatened her life. St. Gianna chose to keep her child and undergo surgery that would allow the child to be carried to term. She delivered a healthy baby girl on April 20, 1962, but St. Gianna passed away from complications just eight days later. She was beatified by Pope John Paul II on April 24th, 1994 and canonized on May 16, 2004. It is noteworthy to point out that this was the last saint that Pope John Paul II canonized and the first modern day pro-life saint. The Knights of Columbus in Yorkville is working diligently to oversee the planning and construction of the outdoor shrine which should be completed within one year. The project will progress in phases as funds become available. This will be a destination shrine and the only one of its kind in the Midwest dedicated to this modern day saint. God’s Divine Mercy council #14463 of the Knights of Columbus is spearheading the financing of the project, and they are seeking the financial support of the statewide Knights of Columbus councils. I encourage you to support the construction of this shrine to a great pro-life saint. Sincerely yours in Christ,

Bishop Siegel State Chaplain

ILLINOIS KNIGHTS IN ACTION

Mater Christi Council along with the Ladies Auxiliary of Mater Christi Council celebrated The Feast of the Annunciation with mass and an outdoor rosary candlelight procession stopping at five locations to pray one decade of the Joyful Rosary at each stop. Over 250 knights their families and parishioners participated in this beautiful event the day that Mary said yes to the will of God. The picture shows the start of the procession at the end of mass.

STATE ASSOCIATE CHAPLAIN Rev Chuck Tuttle Dear Brother Knights and Families, Beginnings and endings … endings and beginnings. Life is filled with a continual rollover of events, phases, levels and plans. Our Fraternal Year gives us an ending on June 30 and a new beginning each July 1. But before we can begin anew, we need to finalize, evaluate and survey what we are in the process of completing; for only then can we genuinely achieve a smooth transition. The task is not complete until all the effort and energy has been expended to make the past a success and a stepping stone to what will follow. I think of the beautiful Solemnity of the Ascension in which we listen to a reading from the beginning of the Acts of the Apostles and a reading from the conclusion of the Holy Gospel either according to Matthew, Mark or Luke. Oddly enough it is the same story but from different perspectives depending on whether it is the Acts or the Gospel reading. The Gospel concludes the Mission of Jesus and His delivery of the Message to them; the Acts begins the Mission of the Apostles and their carrying the Message into the whole world. Although State leadership changes, the mission and the message remain consistent and on-going, like a seamless garment the transition occurs unhampered and tightly woven. Yet before the new begins, the old must be completed – all the way to the end! Let us extend our gratitude to Rich Spada for his dedication, commitment and deep love and loyalty to the Order and to the Illinois State Council and let us extend our best wishes and cooperation to Skip Kinyon and his team as they prepare to carry on the responsibility of the leadership of the State Council. Father Chuck Tuttle

Associate State Chaplain STATE SECRETARY Donald “Skip” Kinyon [email protected] Brother Knights, ladies and all, Where has the time gone? It seems just like yesterday we were starting a new fraternal year. This past year has had many happy and positive moments and of course some not so happy and positive but the positives outweighed the negatives. I first want to thank all of you for what you have done in the past year for our Church, our Order, our Communities and each other. We have more brother knights and there families at the conclusion of our fraternal year than we began with and that is a great positive. That means more brother Knights supporting our Church, our Communities and each other. I offer my congratulations to the newly elected Grand Knights and re-elected Grand Knights of our councils in Illinois. I would not be a very good State Secretary if I did not remind you to please fill out the forms 185(officers chosen), 365(program directors appointed) which are located on the Supreme Website and the State Directory information better known as the DIR1 which is located on the State Website. These are very important forms to make sure all communications are sent to the proper people at the correct address. Our Supreme Council and State Office utilize these forms almost every day. Worthy Grand Knights it is never too

early to begin the planning for your council’s activities in membership recruitment, programming activities and charitable efforts. The earlier you plan the better your plan will be and your council members can schedule their year to help out in these most important council activities. Each of our councils should have a goal of one member, per council, per month along with one program, per council, per month and one charitable activity, per council, per month. This formula will keep our councils active, strong, growing and an important part of each community. I want to say thank you for allowing me the privilege of serving you as your State Secretary for the last two fraternal years. Diane and I have felt the fraternity and brotherhood at every event we were fortunate to participate in. That fraternity and brotherhood is what makes our order stand out. You can always count on a brother knight and his family to be there in good times and in bad. I also want to thank you for your confidence in my abilities to serve you next year as your State Deputy. Diane and I will do our best to represent our Illinois Knights of Columbus. That task is made easier by having the Lord and our great membership at our side 24/7, 365 days a year. Together we will continue the successful journey that our Past State Deputies began so many years ago. Thank you to our State elected, Selected and Appointed officers of this past year. Your dedication to our Faith and our Order is very much appreciated Congratulations to State Deputy Rich and Linda Spada for a most successful and enjoyable 2 years as our leaders. In each new State Deputies term his goal is to leave the order better off than when he received it. With positive membership at the end of your term, the programming activities and the charitable works that have been performed Rich and Linda you have accomplished that! What was the ceiling last year is now the foundation for our new fraternal year. Rich and Linda may you enjoy your new title as our Immediate Past State Deputy. You have earned that title well. God Bless to each of you and God Bless our Illinois Knights of Columbus, Skip STATE TREASURER Bill Doerfler [email protected]

I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to the Delegates at this year’s State Convention for my election as your State Secretary. I look forward to a productive, successful and fun year with everyone’s help. Those three things are what make us proud to say we are members of the Knights of Columbus. I am very pleased to report that the finances are as strong as ever for the Illinois State Council. That is due to the procedures and review processes of our elected State Officers. I am equally proud to report that all of our Intellectual Disabilities group home loans are current. This is not an easy task in the economic climate as many of those homes rely on payment from the state of Illinois to meet some of their expenditures. This is another good example of the Illinois jurisdictions review procedures for home loans. A special thank you to Brother Don Black Attorney at Law/CPA and Brother Tom Herr Attorney at Law for reviewing all home applications, and conducting all the legal work for the closing of home loans at no fees to the State Council. Thank you Brothers Knights!!!

In closing I look forward to working with each and every one of you, remember I’m available to you by phone (815-790-9737) or by email [email protected] should you ever want to contact me. Terry and I look forward to seeing each of you when we can. I’ll work as hard as I can to represent you, as an Illinois Knight of Columbus. Fraternally

Bill Doerfler STATE ADVOCATE Ted Stites [email protected] Brothers, let me begin by thanking you for your trust in me by electing me your next State Treasurer. I promise to learn as much as I can and to give my best efforts in managing the funds of the state council. I appreciate the support and confidence you gave me these past two years as I served you as your State Advocate. I thank State Deputy Rich Spada for his leadership and wisdom, and to the entire state team for their hard work and dedication. I also congratulate our new State Advocate, Frank Schwartz, and I am certain you will seek his guidance with the same trust and confidence you provided me. If I take away anything from my two years as State Advocate it's that I believe all of the councils in Illinois truly want to do what's best for their council and the order. Some councils are very good at following the laws and rules of the order, and others need quite a bit of help. But none of us are experts at everything, and we can always learn something. After these two years, the cliché “if I knew then what I know now” can be no truer. I would do many things differently if my journey as a Knights of Columbus officer was just beginning at the council level. The good news is that you don't have to serve as State Advocate to learn these things. Virtually all of the advice and guidance I provided in response to the hundreds of queries is available to all of you. My guides were the Constitution, Laws, and Rules of the Order; the Grand Knight’s Handbook; the Financial Secretary Handbook; the District Deputy Handbook; and Robert's Rules of Order. Also, certain council officers can get access to the Officer Desk Reference on the Supreme website if you register to get a login. These resources served me in answering the vast majority of the questions I was asked. Every council can help themselves considerably by referring to these resources. You will certainly find many ways that your council isn't doing things quite right. And when you find the answer, don't simply dismiss it. No matter how big or small the effort to correct something, it is the right thing to do for you and your membership. I often had to provide difficult answers to councils seeking my advice. But if I found it in these resources, that was my answer. There are no shortcuts. Our laws and rules are tried and true. Trust them! Best of luck to all of you as we close out the fraternal year strong, and start the new fraternal year flying out of the gate! Vivat Jesus! Ted STATE WARDEN Herbert Bingham 309-691-8324 [email protected] Worthy Knights all, with the end of the fraternal year 2012/2013 looming our State Membership team has been working diligently to bring in another winner for our State. When this publication hits the streets there will still be time to degree new members and forward their Form 100s to Supreme. Go for it! The Annual State Convention is history now and most of the current State Officers will be advancing in the Chairs. As outgoing State Warden I wish them great success and God Speed in their new duties. Also, some new faces will appear to make their mark in guiding the Illinois State Council and Illinois State Council Charities, Inc. I solicit your support for these incoming Elected and Selected Officers.

My main thought for this article is to voice my appreciation for the guidance, encouragement and support I have enjoyed during my year as Warden of the Illinois Knights. It has been a privilege and a pleasure working with our dedicated Chaplain The Most Reverend Joseph M. Siegel, Associate State Chaplain Charles Tuttle and other Religious, State Deputy Richard Spada and my other fellow State Officers. It has been a real learning experience. Thank you Brother Knights and Ladies all. This is my last newsletter article and I apologize for it’s brevity, or maybe brevity is the way to go? Vivat Jesus! Herb Bingham State Warden 2012/2013 IMMEDIATE PAST STATE DEPUTY James Bednar [email protected] Brothers, As this fraternal year comes to a close and we look to the future and a new State Deputy, brothers it is time to think about the future of our councils. As society try’s to chip away at our Catholic values and we wonder about our freedom to practice our religion as Roman Catholic men with our families it is time to stand and call ALL Catholic men to join with us. It is more important than any time before that we ask men to stand with us, as we stand with our Bishops and Priests defending our religious freedom and our family values. New members brought into our councils mean more support for the defense of our Catholic faith and members retained build on the positive future of our church. We do not just add members with out a reason; we do it because it is the right thing to do. Whether your council is small or large there are many things to get your members involved in to make a difference in your community, the families and our church. The programs that we have are many and varied from our charities, to family, youth, church and community there is something for everyone. For the sake of our church and our family values we must open our doors to the Knights of Columbus to each and every Catholic man and his family in our Parishes. Thank you to all our council leaders and members for all that you have done so much to grow their councils and the Order here in Illinois, so I sign off for the last time as your Immediate Past State Deputy, keep working for our church and your councils. James C. Bednar, IPSD STATE PROGRAM DIRECTOR Frank Schwartz [email protected]

WOW what a couple of years and what allot of fun. I want to start by Thanking all of you my Brother Knights for your trust in electing me as the incoming State Advocate. My wife Shelly and I will do all we can to ensure that we earn that trust and I promise to try to learn the State Advocates job as quickly and as completely as possible. I would like to then thank State Deputy Richard Spada and his wife Linda for the opportunity to serve all of you as the State Program Director for the past two years.

ILLINOIS KNIGHTS IN ACTION

In a solemn First Degree Exemplification ceremony at the Maryville Knights of Columbus Council # 8713 hall, four Catholic gentlemen (seated) took their first step in their journey to full Knighthood

I would then like to thank the 19 men and Women who make up the State Programming Team for all their efforts time and talent along with their devotions to the Order of the Knights of Columbus. Then I would like to thank each of you who have all done the great works of the order and have the awards to prove it; with 5 international awards last year and programs that should become international awards this year. I would like to encourage each council to continue to work hard to keep the programs you do, the corner stone of your council. We all know that Good Programs promote Membership and from the programming efforts spring Charity Dollars. At this year's State Convention I challenged each council to conduct at least 2 new programs in the months of May and June. Several councils did just that. Three councils emailed me to state they had recruited at least one new member for their efforts. Just shows what a little effort and creative thinking can do for every Council. Your councils are the heart beat of the Order, your heart beat pumps the blood that brings a smile to a faces after a tornado hits and destroys homes. Your heart is what makes men and their families stop and think what have they have done to protect our religious freedoms. Your heart beats so that marriages remain an institution that involves one man and one woman. So as your heart pumps so should your council, do not take a month off instead think of ways to honor the family in August, think of ways to bring your councils members together by having a picnic in July, think of ways to hold an activity to welcome students back to school in September buy holding a Year of Faith Program like an hour of pray asking God to let the year go by without one school shooting death. If the heart stops pumping and the blood stops flowing councils die never stop! Thinks of new ways to excite men and their families to join our order. Finally I want to congratulate the 23 men were honored at this year's State Convention by receiving the Rising Star Award. These men were recognized for their leadership qualities and capabilities. I hope to see them all soon as DD's or in other leadership rolls. Thank you all for all your hard work and efforts. Fraternally, Frank and Shelly Schwartz State Program Director

On behalf of the Illinois State Council Congratulations to all! Thank you State Deputy Richard Spada for the opportunity to serve as the Ladies Auxiliary Chiarlady for the Illinois State Council for the past two years. It has been an honor. Sandy Decker State Ladies Auxiliary Chairlady [email protected] STATE CHARITIBLE ACTIVITIES DIR. Erik Luckett [email protected] Brothers, What a great convention! Seeing old friends, making new ones, celebrating being Knights and what we do! It takes a lot of planning and people to put on a great convention and I tip my cap to the MANY volunteers who worked so tirelessly. I hope everyone that made it to convention this year, had a great time and made a few new friends. We are all truly brothers in Christ and our family just keeps getting bigger each year. Even though we celebrated and congratulated many individuals and councils during convention, our fraternal year is not over yet! There’s still time for a STRONG FINISH for this fraternal year that ends June 30. There’s still time to invite a few good men to join our order. Just ask them and bring them to a 1st degree! There’s still time to become a STAR or double Star Council. It has been my privilege to work with an extraordinary group of dedicated men and women over the past two years that we call our State Family. Our Chaplains, Officers, Directors, Chairmen, Office crew and many past officers and directors have been offering their guidance, direction, support, and friendship to both Jalayne and I. I want to thank each and every one of you, but I especially want to thank State Deputy Rich Spada for offering me this opportunity. I’ve worked with a great crew of Chairmen and I hope we’ve been able to expand and inspire more acts of Charity by the 73,200+ brother knights in Illinois.

I’ve learned a lot in the past two years and look forward to a STRONG FINISH which will only lead to an enthusiastic start to the next fraternal year. Vivat Jesus! Erik Luckett State Charitable Activities Director STATE DISTRICT DEPUTY DIRECTOR Dale Smith [email protected] The 2012 - 2013 Fraternal Year has been one of changes and enlightenment. It began with a new focus on building relationships and good communications. We started with small steps and yes, we stumbled along the way. But, we never lost sight of our goals and understood that it was to be a learning process. Focus is now placed on providing the District Deputy with the full support he needs to be the best Friend, Mentor and Guide to his councils that he can and should be. Diocesan Leadership Teams have been established and are readily available to answer the District Deputies questions, as well as, offer personal assistance to him when and where ever needed.. He has a comprehensive guide book for reference and he has access to whatever information and forms he will need on line on both the State and Supreme web sites. We have learned that good communication is more than just providing information. Good communication requires sharing information. One on One meetings provide the first step, not only in building relationships, but in establishing the process of good communications. Once relationships have been established and communication lines are open, planning becomes an easier process. A well-established plan, reviewed, evaluated, revised where necessary, and then followed is the key to success in all areas, Charity, Programming, and Membership. Progress has and is being made, but there is still work to do. Bigger steps to be taken. The goal is for every council to be active in all areas, Charity, Programming, and Membership. Establishing a policy of One Member per Council per Month, forming a 1st Degree Team, and implementing the Knight's Advocate Program, along with the cooperative development of plan between the District Deputy and Council leadership are the small steps that will lead to great strides. Judy and I wish to thank you for your friendship, support, and all of the great things you do in the Name of the Lord. Vivat Jesus, Dale STATE PUBLIC RELATIONS DIR. & NEWSLETTER EDITOR Robert J. Fuggiti [email protected] Let me start by thanking our State Deputy Elect Skip Kinyon on allowing me to be your Public Relations Director and Newsletter Editor. I am looking forward to working with him and all the State Elected and Selected State officers. To State Deputy Rich Spada , thank you for a great two years of leadership. You have left our State Council in a better place than when it started.

What of the future? Are you looking ahead? Do you have a plan? If so have you shared this with your council members? All good plans are made possible by sharing your vision as a leader with your members. Congratulations to all you newly elected Council Grand Knights, Faithfull Navigators and Officers. Planning starts now. Arm yourself with the knowledge you need to have a successful year. Plan your degrees for the whole year. Remember that a Catholic man cannot become a Knight of Columbus if: 1st you don’t ask him and 2nd if you don’t take him to one of the PLANNED degrees. Councils need to work with their Chapters, Assemblies and with the State Council and Supreme Council. This is what makes us more than a man’s club. This is what makes us a KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS. I am a believer in the K.I.S.S. approach. Don’t over think. Keep it Simple and it will work. Vivat Jesus

ILLINOIS STATE COUNCIL OFFICE Denny & Donna & Vicki [email protected] New officers are being elected in councils all over the state. Immediately following the election, complete and send in your 185 form! Forward the original to Supreme, copy your DD and the State Deputy (c/o the State Office). YOU DO NOT HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL YOUR OFFICERS ARE INSTALLED TO SEND IN THIS VITAL FORM. If you use email, you will be done with the click of the SUBMIT button! We hope that Assemblies will file their 186 Election of Officer forms in the same manner as a council. Both councils and assemblies can utilize the website or wait to receive their copy of the DIR 1 (Directory Gathering Form). This form MUST be completed and sent to the STATE OFFICE for inclusion in the new directory. Filing of your 185 (or 186) form with Supreme as soon as officers are elected will trigger the mailing of the “Surge with Service” package for your council. This package contains the information for the new fraternal year. The deadline for mailing your IL SP7 and Supreme’s SP-7 will not be extended. FILE YOUR REPORTS NOW! The State Office will be mailing an ID packet for the 2013-2014 ID Drive TO THOSE COUNCILS THAT DID NOT ATTEND THE 115TH Annual Convention. To date, only 110 of the 480 councils have notified the State Office of their new ID Chairman. This means that the ID packets for those 370 unidentified councils will be sent to the Grand Knight of record. Please get your new ID Chairman form to the State Office Right Away! Remember to use the State Website (www.illinoisknights.org) to search for current forms, reports and State news. It is a useful tool that should be consulted to remain up to date with news from around the State. It can also be utilized as a link to the Supreme Website by clicking on the Reports. Tab and clicking on the Supreme link. Councils whose funds are on HOLD [refer to the latest REPORT LOG on the website] should contact the State Office to clear up these old items which are highlighted in yellow. in the REPORT LOG These next few months will be a little busy here at the State Office. We are preparing for the DD Installation Meeting in July.

Information for the DD Meeting has been posted on the State Website. The invitations for this Installation were mailed. Per Capita invoices for 2013-2014 are being mailed. We urge councils whose per capita is in arrears to send their check immediately. Remember, the State assessment is based on the Gross membership as of 4/30/13 LESS Honorary Life and Disabled members at a cost of $5.00 per net member. We are still finalizing the cost for this year’s General Liability policy. As soon as it is received, Renewal Invoices will be prepared and sent via US mail. Quotations for the General Liability policy will be mailed to those councils who have not participated in the past. Remember our policy covers an unlimited number of events at no additional cost. Councils that have not paid their policy in the past will not be offered renewals. One last but very important note: In this next fraternal year in an effort to keep costs low, we will be relying more heavily on email communication. It is important we are given an email address for BOTH the Grand Knight and Financial Secretary in each council so up to the minute information can be transmitted. PLEASE show this information on the Form 185 as well as the DIR 1. We will strive to keep those mailings going to ensure you are all informed and up to date on what’s happening in the State Of Illinois, and we’ll keep smilin’!

“Peace of the Lord be with

You”
