he House of Les Copains, one of the

most well-known and reliable names in

Ready-to-Wear fashion, has unveiled

its Spring and Summer 2012 Collection

(S/S12) which treads in new territory. The season’s

collection focuses on knitwear, “a symbol of style,

glamour, freedom and exellence.”

This season Les Copains designer Mr. Alessandro

Dell’Acqua introduces a feminine collection weaving

refined lines through contrasting stripes and color

combinations to create a chic complement to the

style of any woman who pays close attention to

detail. A welcome trend in the collection is the

inclusion of airy t-shirts personalized with prints by

Mr. Omar Galliani, one of the most active figures

on the Italian contemporary art scene and an artist

renowned for his graffiti masterpieces.

In March 2012, Mr. Paolo Torello-Viera, CEO of Les

Copains and Ms. Alexandra Lapegna, Director of

Merchandising at Les Copains visited Austin to host

High Tea at Saks Fifth Avenue, the only retailer in

the u.S. to carry the Les Copains line. Tea attendees

previewed pieces from the Spring and Summer

2012 Couture Collection which included the t-shirts

personalized with the Omar Galliani prints. Guests

marveled at the opportunity to be the exclusive

u.S. audience to preview the two t-shirts of which

there are a limited number worldwide. When

asked why Austin was selected for the collection’s

t-shirt preview, Mr. Torello-Viera said, “We were so

taken by the generosity of people in Austin when

we visited previously that we wanted a special way

to say thank you. Making Austin the first place

to personally preview the t-shirt is our special way

of saying thank you for opening arms wide to Les

Copains.” This “thank you” from Les Copains is

a true representation of the quality of character

behind the clothing line founded by Mr. Mario

Bandiera and whose name - meaning “the buddies”

- was taken from the title of a popular French radio

show, Salut Les Copains.

A PAssion for fAshion

Experience, a keen awareness of trends, and a

passion for fashion are what Alexandra Lapegna and

paolo Torello-Viera bring to Les Copains. They are

unwilling to compromise quality. They have both

business savvy and a creative side which allow them

to be part of the team charting an ever expanding

course for Les Copains.

Ms. Lapegna, who fondly recalls playing dress up in

her mother’s clothes and shoes, attended fashion

school in Bucharest where she was born and raised.

After completing school and a stint in Italy, Ms.

Lapegna moved to the united States to work for

Gianni Versace. During this time she was personally

mentored by Mr. Versace himself. This experience

provided the foundation for which she would build

her career as a fashion industry executive.

For Mr. Torello-Viera fashion is in his genes. He

was born and raised in Biella, Italy, “The Capital of

Textiles.” His family worked in the textile industry,

so from an early age Mr. Torello-Viera developed

an appreciation for fashion. He began his career

in piece goods eventually operating a consulting

company that sourced cloth for tailored clothing

companies. Ermenegildo Zegna, an Italian fashion

house and leader in menswear, was a long-term

client. He joined that company in 1998. While at

Zegna, he ran the brand’s u.S. operations and was

TF E A T u R E

influential-magazine.com

part of a senior team that turned the label into

a couture powerhouse. Torello-Viera was then

appointed the COO-EVp of Brioni Retail uSA until

he took his current position as CEO of Les Copains.

In every fashion lover’s life there is an outfit that

makes them to realize how positive fashion can

make one feel. Ms. Lapegna, fondly reminisced about

a pair of powder blue jeans with a white stripe worn

with a white t-shirt. Mr. Torello-Viera lit up reflecting

on the memory of purchasing his first pair of Levi’s.

Of course, there was also the Armani top coat.

When it comes to fashion choices both agree it is

important to make selections that make you feel

confident, as well as, comfortable. Their philosophy

can be summed up as it’s not what you wear; it’s how

you wear it. This is the appeal of the Les Copains

brand. A woman can wear the brand and make it her

own just in how she wears it. Every woman that wears

Les Copains brands herself as a lady with panache.

Innovation and being forward-looking will continue

to be the key to the success of Les Copains. This is

exemplified by the t-shirts in the Spring and Summer

2012 Collection featuring the Galliani prints. The idea

was inspired from conversations between Mr. Bandiera

and Mr. Galliani who both strongly believe there is a

perfect marriage between art and fashion. It is hoped

this art and fashion collaboration will encourage lovers

of fashion to have a stronger interest and willingness

to know art. To advance this greater awareness, Mr.

Bandiera and Mr. Galliani will release a five minute

video every few months about the history of the arts.

iNTo THe FuTure

Mr. Torello-Viera recognizes the potential impact

of technology, but, as he puts it, “To remain on the

cutting edge fashion, we must always have creativity.

Creativity can never be replaced by a machine.”

When asked how creative designers such as Mr.

Dell’Acqua stay on trend, Mr. Torello-Viera and Ms.

Lapegna respond by saying confidently, “Designers

set the trends.” As such, Les Copains is poised to

adorn clients for years to come.

THe VisioN For les coPaiNs

During the tea, Mr. Torello-Viera and Ms. Lapegna

shared the vision of the future of Les Copains. From

the beginning, Les Copains has positioned itself to

remain in the forefront of the fashion industry. They

know how to put the right garment on the right

customer. Mr. Torello-Viera shared his vision for

Les Copains which continues to be an international

brand. Les Copains is:

• Modern, sophisticated, updated

• Market driven, appealing to a broad clientele

• The synonym of quality

• Non-compromising

• The intrinsic value of the product is that it is

”Made in Les Copains”

oupled with this vision is the mission to direct the

attitude of the line toward absolute excellence in

every expression. This inspires the consumer.

Recently, Les Copains tapped designer Alessandro

Dell’Acqua’s creative talents to build on the

company’s tradition of being able to work wonders

with knit. Mr. Mario Bandiera, Les Copains founder,

is delighted to have the Italian designer on board.

Mr. Bandiera says, “We recognize in the style of

Mr. Alessandro Dell’Acqua our same vision of

elegance made of innovation and artisanal craft.

At a time in which the market needs reassurance,

we believe that the significant and established

experience of Alessandro Dell’Acqua can best

translate the historical excellence of Les Copains in

a contemporary language.”

“To remain on the cutting edge fashion, we must always have creativity. Creativity can never be replaced by a machine.”

ome cultures believe when you take

someone’s picture, you steal their soul.

For some photographers the opposite

is true. The picture they take returns the

soul or brightens it. It discovers and captures a style

no one but the photographer sees at first and then

shares like a painter who depicts the world as he

sees it.

Certainly good photographers create a sense of

wonder and imagination. They are passionate and are

great story tellers. They are patient; striving for the

best; obsessed over getting THE shot. They have the

innate ability to create a lasting and memorable story.

How well this describes Austin photographer Ed

Lehmann. A recognized expert at “drawing with

light” - a phrase created from two ancient Greek

words used to describe photography: photo, for

“light,” and graph, for “drawing,” Ed is warm, brilliant,

imaginative, sensitive and funny.

early iNFlueNces

Ed was born in Chile to a family of German decent.

As youngsters, Ed and his siblings were exposed to

the arts by their father who is a huge supporter of

the arts and grandmother who had an interest in

photography. Ed was also exposed to the wonder

of color and nature as the family would travel

throughout Europe. To escape the Chilean coup

d’etat, the family relocated to Dallas, Texas in 1973.

Ed’s quiet spirit and observant nature allowed him to

view his experiences with appreciation and patience.

It helped him adapt quickly to change. He could

not have known it was shaping him into an expert

photographer.

Art appreciation grew as the Lehmann family

continued to explore the great artists. Ed developed

a keen appreciation for the works of picasso because

of the use of color and abstract lines. The art of the

Renaissance period was also appealing to him from

a young age. Renaissance artists understood the

concept of a greater sense of light and color which

they incorporated into their paintings. Creating a

sense of space was also a key innovation of the time,

as was perspective, a clever device causing your eye

to see in three-dimension. This concept fascinated

Ed and contributed to his love of the Renaissance

period into adulthood.

At the age of 13, Ed received his first camera

as a gift and thus began the fascination with

everything photography. From an early interest

in landscape photography to photo journalism

and art photography, Ed’s interests cover a wide

spectrum. Experimentation through

the years with the many dimensions

of photography has allowed Ed to

develop a unique style appreciated by

his clients and fellow photographers

alike.

When taking a picture, Ed says, “It’s

important to create a mood and a

scene allowing a vision to materialize.

A good photographer sees beyond

the subject, almost to the finished

product.”

As with any profession, standing

out against others in the industry is

a key to long-term success, and Ed

certainly does this. He creates with

a sense inspiration and is concerned

about how others are inspired by

his photography. unique to Ed’s

style is his technique of adding an

overlay texture to his photographs

creating an one of a kind look to every

photograph. Clients are mesmerized,

and this technique has become Ed’s

unique style.

When working with clients, Ed

maintains a collaborative spirit,

listens and is open to new ideas.

Though naturally a quiet man, don’t let that fool you

“Sometimes, though, I have to be diplomatic and

strongly encourage a client to relax and let me do my

job,” Ed says. Though this may not always be easy to

Ed, once the final product is seen by the customer,

it is a detail that clients like about working with him.

How does Ed continue to expand and improve his

skills? One method is taking pictures with a camera

phone. Why? Ed says, “Any camera can take a

good picture. The skill lies with the photographer.”

Hence, Ed often practices with his camera phone.

This practice forces him to focus more emphasis on

what is seen versus the help of any technology.

THe youNg royals

Early this year, Austin resident Kim Van Vliet had

an idea of creating photographs of famous historic

queens using her daughter Sky, and other models in

a shoot aptly titled The Young Royals. In her mind,

there was no photographer more appropriate for this

photo shoot than Ed Lehmann. Ms. Van Vliet says,

“Ed’s talent, vision and technique complemented

well my overall vision for the shoot, and I knew he

would create the most appropriate direction.”

The goal was to remain as close to the historic periods

as possible by photographing Marie Antoinette,

Mary, Queen of Scotts, and Queen Elizabeth, Royals

who have had such an impact on history. It was not

the goal to recreate exactly their aura but to create

a “new perspective” with the energy the models

would bring to the photo shoot. Ed assisted Ms. Van

Vliet to assemble an ensemble who embraced their

vision. From custom styling to hair and make-up to

props, they had it covered. Stylist Rachel Chadwick

worked meticulously on the wardrobe to ensure it

was authentic to the represented time periods.

We are pleased to feature exclusively selected

photographs of The Young Royals. Judge for

yourself the talent of Ed Lehmann.

What’s new for Ed Lehmann? He is developing into

the preferred portrait photographer in Austin. He

also has his eyes set on photographing book covers.

Ed encourages everyone to pursue what interests

them. never allow yourself to become stuck in a rut.

You can plan to see a great deal more of Ed Lehmann

in Austin over the coming months; either him

personally or his unique and beautiful photography.

For this talented photographer, a picture truly paints a

thousand words, and he has a great deal more to say.

Career contentment can be good in that we associate

it with satisfaction. However, it can stunt growth

and unfound happiness. Do you find yourself going

through the motions in your career? You may be

completely satisfied with your career, but you may

be wishing you were in another line of work. We all

have interests and hidden talents. It’s natural to play

it safe and not attempt to capitalize on them for fear

of failure when, in fact, we are only failing ourselves

by not doing so.

Detective Jarrett Crippen with the Austin police

Department was wise enough to pay attention to his

discovered hidden talents and put his “one chance at

life” attitude into action. As a police officer, Crippen

learned not only about others but also about himself.

He found that he enjoyed speaking to neighborhood

groups and school children, and he discovered

through his placement at the police academy he

enjoyed teaching.

f the glare in Austin seems a bit brighter,

don’t blame Daylight Savings Time. The

city’s artistic reputation recently landed

some additional bling with a fine-jewelry

design school — Jewelry Studies International (JSI)

Two globally recognized jewelry masters set their

sites on the Texas capital last year, and the school’s

already bringing attention from the design world to

a city better known for guitars than gems. Ronda

Coryell, a native Texan with an extensive history

in art education, and Vasken Tanielian, whose 35-

year career includes apprenticeships with parisian

masters, say Austin’s artistic reputation heavily

influenced their relocation.

“We purposely looked away from the existing jewelry

centers on the East and West coasts,” Tanielian said.

“We wanted someplace convenient and affordable

for students staying weeks at a time. Then we

experienced this vibrant, creative community in

Austin, and that was it. Everyplace else fell off the list.

Students get excited about coming to Austin.”

In addition to full certification, the school offers short

courses in specialized techniques. Students range

from beginners out of high school to experienced

jewelers to retirees exploring a new path. The common

bond? The calling to make something beautiful — for

profit, self-expression, or simply to wear.

HoMeToWN aDVaNTage

For Austinite Janise Simmons, JSI seemed too

good to be true. An artistically inclined CpA with

a decades-long passion for jewelry, she previously

settled for occasional workshops. When Simmons

heard through the jewelry community that two

famed instructors chose Austin to open their school,

she called before the doors even opened.

“Vasken and Ronda have a name in the industry

— these are not unknown people,” Simmons said.

“Maybe I want to learn chasing and repoussé or

Russian filigree. As the industry stands right now, it’s

not uncommon for you to have to go many different

places to learn these skills. Well, Ronda and Vasken

have set up a curriculum where you’re introduced to

all of these things, and they bring the masters to you.”

Coryell and Tanielian tap friendships within the

international jewelry community, supplementing

programs with some of the biggest industry names.

Wax carver Kate Wolf and engraver Hratch nargizian

drew students from around the nation for their initial

Austin classes. upcoming instructors include Italian

silversmith Fabrizio Acquafresca, currently working

on his second commission from the Vatican. Many

of these masters teach student with limited or no

experience.

“Everything used to be these deep-dark trade

secrets and guilds within the jewelry world,” Coryell

said. “To have the opportunity to study with a true

master used to not even be available.”

MergiNg TraDiTioN aND iNNoVaTioN

While both Coryell and Tanielian hold classical

training, they believe time-honored skills go hand-

in-hand with modern advancements.

“Students learn the correct way to file or how to

hold their tools with precision, just as masters did

for centuries,” Tanielian said. “However, we instill

those basics for a deeper understanding of the new

ways. You can’t be in the jewelry industry without

new tools, but you can’t be excellent without

understanding traditional skills.”

“That was another thing that attracted me to the

school,” Simmons said. “You have to embrace new

ideas along the way. Argentium is a wonderful

metal. CAD-CAM (computer-assisted design and

manufacturing) is a game-changer — the game-

changer — in jewelry.”

Tanielian is one of the nation’s foremost experts

in CAD-CAM, teaching across the country, while

Coryell holds one of the top international reputations

in Argentium, a recent silver alloy that’s taken the

jewelry industry by storm. In fact, JSI’s curriculum

is the only program recognized by Argentium

International for Argentium certifi cation preparation.

The alloy, which holds more silver than traditional

Sterling, fi rst attracted Coryell as it proved whiter,

harder and more tarnish resistant. In addition, it’s

completely recycled.

goiNg greeN

The school’s green emphasis on recycled metals and

away from the harsher chemical not only departs

from the previous reputation of jewelers, but also

represents an essential element of JSI.

“You can teach the future generation of metalsmiths

that there is an alternative now,” Coryell said. “It’s

not only that the metal’s recycled, but it’s even the

habits within the studio. It’s teaching them how to

set up as green a studio as possible.”

Simmons, who recently completed the beginner’s

certifi cation and enrolled in the advanced course, sees

the school not only opening personal opportunities

but believes Austin can also defi ne it’s own style.

“When I think of New York, I think of very

contemporary jewelry,” she said. “When I think of

California, I think of jewelry that has more of the

unusual, found-object element. Austin has its own

personality. We have a lot of young people. We have

a lot of talented artists in this town. I defi nitely think

Austin has all the ability to come out as a very well-

known place to get educated in jewelry.”

Technology and fitness have always gone together.

The modern fitness machines we are familiar with

today can be traced back to contraptions invented

in the mid 1800s by Gustav Zander, a Swedish

physician. Technology has never played a bigger

part in fitness than it does today. With the help of

the internet, wi-fi, Bluetooth and smartphones, we

have so many tools to help us be fit. Here are just

a few gadgets that will assist you in getting and

staying healthy.

NiKe FuelBaND

The nike FuelBand is a wristband you wear that

tracks a number of daily fitness activities via an

accelerometer. Simply set your goals, put it on

and start your day. It encourages you through an

integrated LED screen on the band itself and talks

to your smartphone or computer by Bluetooth. You

can use a smartphone app or the nike software to

view, track and share your progress. It is available

online or at many retailers.

FiTBiT ulTra

The FitBit ultra is a clip-on device that does most of

what the nike FuelBand does with the added feature

of tracking your sleep. At night you simply tell the

clip you are going to bed, and wear it on a special

band. It tracks data through the night and after

transmitting the data wirelessly to your smartphone,

you can see how well you’ve slept. The goal is not

only to help you be more active but also to help you

get a more restful sleep as you learn your habits. It is

available online at amazon.com.

iMuscle sMarTPHoNe aPP

The gym can be a daunting place. Knowing which

exercise to do with what machine or piece of

equipment can be tricky. There are many smartphone

applications on the market that can help you do this,

but one in particular stands out for me - iMuscle.

After creating your workout it will display video of

the exercises so that you can then replicate them

in the gym. It shows you which main muscle groups

are targeted for the selected exercise, as well as,

deeper muscles that assist during that exercise. The

application is available for download from the Apple

app store on your iphone or ipad.

MyFiTNessPal.coM

Myfitnesspal.com is a standout amongst the many

diet and fitness websites. The website helps to

create any number of goals; design workout routines

and diet plans; track your daily exercise and diet;

and ultimately share this with others in community

groups you chose to help encourage you to reach

your goals. The site has many other features

t’s not uncommon these days to hear

about musicians broadening their

horizons outside of the world of music

into things like fashion, cosmetics, acting,

or reality television. But how often do you hear about

a musician, who grew up wanting to entertain others

through dance and song, becoming a celebrity chef

to the stars and cookbook author all the while gaining

new music fans as a solo artist? That is the amazing

journey Mary Jane Girls singer Maxi B. found herself

on. How did this happen you ask? Well, it all started

with a love of music and chance encounter with a

funk and R&B legend.

Growing up in pittsburgh, Maxi B.’s (born Kimberly

Wuletich) home was filled with musical sounds of

Motown along with other influential sounds and

artists. But her favorite musicians were Smokey

Robinson, Diana Ross, and Tina Turner. Watching

these creative talents perform on “The Ed Sullivan

Show” inspired young Kim longing for dance lessons

so she could one day find herself performing on

the stages of Broadway. However, being of humble

means, Kim was unable to take lessons. She instead

began imitating the many dance moves she saw on

television and became a self-taught dancer.

Kim knew she had a gift for dance and was determined

to make her dream a reality. She hopped on a plane to

Hollywood. After three lengthy interviews with Rick

James’ brother, she was asked to come to the studio

and formally meet with the funk and R&B legend

himself. After arriving at the studio, Kim became

excited about the music and started to dance. That’s

when Rick noticed what she could bring to the table.

In no time at all, Kim was asked if she wanted to join

the group, the Mary Jane Girls. She quickly said yes.

As a Mary Jane Girl, she had an opportunity to look

at four different costumes provided for the members

of the group. Three had already been spoken for.

This left the remaining outfit which consisted of

black leather and a whip. Feeling confident she

could pull the look off Kim accepted the outfit, and

Maxi B. was born. The Mary Jane Girls climbed to

the top of the charts with “All night Long,” “In My

House,” and “Candy Man”. Currently, the Mary Jane

Girls reign as the most sampled/covered girl group

in music history.

Being a Mary Jane Girl had its share of challenges…

the greatest one being the color of her skin. Many

blacks would say, “Why is there a white girl singing

in this R&B group?” or the whites would say “Why

truly wanted to be a visual entertainer and believed

color didn’t matter.

Maxi B. recalls an experience when the Mary Jane

Girls were performing on Soul Train. While each group

member was being introduced and receiving a warm

welcome, she was greeted with boos from the crowd.

not letting that discourage her, she gave the best

performance she could. At the end of the performance

those boos turned to applause and cheers. She

gained the respect of the audience and showed that

skin color is no barrier for great entertainment.

Taking a hiatus from music, Maxi B. has been pursuing

her other great passion - cooking. “Cooking has

been passion of mine for many years, and I wanted

to share a healthy way of cooking.” She became a

sought after “Chef to the Stars” and released her

fi rst cookbook Champagne and Collard Greens in

2008. It became an instant hit selling out almost

immediately in its fi rst run. It is currently in the

process of being edited and made into an e-book

scheduled to be released later this year.

Often asked the secret for maintaining her youthful

appearance, Maxi B. decided to share her secrets

to healthy living by writing her fi rst anti-aging

cookbook Beauty and the Feast (For Life). Recipe

ingredients include super foods that are designed

to make you “…look good, feel good, and live

longer.” Along with healthy eating, it promotes

the importance of exercising and healthy skin care

management. Recently, Maxi B. was selected as a

spokesmodel for an anti-aging skin care treatment

line by AuraVie Skincare.

Maxi B. has not given up her musical roots. In 2011,

she returned to the studio as a solo artist and

recorded the dance hit and anti-bullying anthem

“Shine.” “Everyone has a special gift.” Maxi B. says,

“We are the light, and we should never let anyone

dim that light. We should shine.” Her next song, “I

Do” talks about marriage. “Everyone has the right to

be married.” She explains. “I want this to be the new

celebration song or wedding anthem.”

no doubt about it, Maxi B. still has IT. Whether

she’s adding spice to her favorite recipes or musical

anthems expressing the joy of living, you can expect

bigger and greater things from her in the near future.

Ever want to invest in pork bellies? How about

making money when the market goes down? What

about investing in China, India, Russia, or all three at

the same time? What if you could have access to

these investments at substantially lower costs than

traditional methods? Did I get your attention? I hope

so! no, this isn’t an infomercial to tell you how to get

rich quick. nor is it a promise of better returns. It is

an opportunity to become aware of changing trends

in the investment world.

The number one rule in investing is: Diversify. The

number two rule is: refer to rule number one.

Mutual funds have offered investors access to

diversified investments and a variety of strategies

that have served the general investing public well for

years. now there is a new generation of investments

that have been gaining in popularity for the last

several years, mostly because of the efficiencies

they bring over traditional mutual fund investing.

ETFs (Exchange Traded Funds) provide diversified

access to strategies that were traditionally only open

to big money hedge funds and accredited investors.

now investors can have access to strategies such as

Managed Futures (Wisdom Tree Managed Futures

Strategy Fund {WDTI}) or even making money while

the market goes down (pro Shares Short S&p 500

{SH}). Additionally, ETFs generally have lower fees

than traditional mutual fund investing. Mutual funds

usually have an expense ratio of 1% or more where

ETFs are often .25% or less. That savings can add up

to thousands of dollars over time depending on the

amount invested and for how long.

Another advantage of ETFs is they can be sold

during the day compared to mutual funds which are

only available to sale at the end of the day. If your

investment is not performing as you had hoped, you

can sell an ETF during the day and buy another one.

With mutual funds, it all happens at the end of the

day, so you really don’t know what you are getting

until later.

I have been using ETFs more and more for my

client’s portfolios; however, you should check with

your financial advisor to see if they are right for you.

Make sure you know what you are getting into when

making any investment.

toward customized motorcycle accessories and then

into jewelry design. He has thrown himself entirely into

Mark Kalen Designs, and he hasn’t looked back.

As an artist, Mark prefers to work with stainless

steel because it provides great challenges due to

its strength. The result

is a piece that will truly

stand the test of time.

Mark sums up his love for

working with stainless

“Stainless steel holds a

pieces of art that excite and endure.”

Artistic interest is often born of out of the observation

of what currently exists and a curious, confident idea

that it could be done better. Mark was tired of seeing

repetitive design, and felt he could create something

elegant but with a provocative edge.

When designing jewelry, Mark’s primary goal is to achieve

Jewelry and accessories were a natural transition

EVENTS influential-magazine.com

On March 23 in Austin, influential people Mr. David

Garza, Dr. John Hogg and Ms. Charmaine McGill hosted

the fifth annual fashion show, Fashion for Compassion,

presented by Mercedes-Benz of Austin with Saks Fifth

Avenue, benefiting the Austin Children’s Shelter.

The show featured prominent Austin families, couples

and individuals on the runway. Appearances were

made by the “florists du jour” Rosa Maria Avila and her

daughters Sofia and Victoria, proprietors of Mandarin

Flower, along with Vaughn Brock of American Ventus

Energy and his sons Marshall and Grayson. The

featured food fare included selections from such

fine dining establishments as Lambert’s and fashion

focused desserts from Kellie’s Kandies & Cookies and

Tiny pies. The live auction included an nBC “Fashion

Star” taping & VIp Experience in Beverly Hills donated

by Saks Fifth Avenue. There was also much fabulous

shopping with Saks generously donating 10% of sales

to the Austin Children’s Shelter.

The finale of the runway show was former professional

model Anna Anami who has modeled for neiman

Marcus, Zac posen, Chanel, Tiffany’s, Bergdorf

Goodman, Escada, Saks Fifth Avenue, Dolce and

Gabbana, and Ralph Lauren.

Fashion for Compassion provided the perfect

opportunity to socialize, network and renew old

acquaintances in a festive atmosphere with the

common humanitarian goal of supporting the Austin

abuse and neglect.  Today, they continue that tradition

but have expanded their services to include three

additional programs:  The Teen Parent Program, The

safe home and support for teen moms or teen dads

who are in foster care with their infants or toddlers.

They help them break the cycle of abuse and neglect.

The Transitional Living program for foster youth ages

In recent years, I’ve discovered my inner foodie,

and thanks to friends (and in a small part the

Food Network) I continue to discover inviting new

places in Austin and surrounding areas. A recently

discovered new find has been Krave Wine Bar and

Bistro located in historic downtown Round Rock

(121 E. Main Street). This new drinking and dining

destination opened earlier this year and focuses on

showcasing local foods and wines.

Whether you are looking for appetizers to share with

a group, such as their now famous Krave Fries or

Italian Nachos, to something more filling like Chicken

piccatta or Gorganzola Gnocci, Krave’s menu offers

a bevy of unique and yummy choices.

If you have a sweet tooth like I do, you are going to

fall head over heels for their desserts including the

strawberry champagne tiramisu or the De L’amour,

an enticing chocolate nutella and strawberry pizza.

The ambience is comfortable and relaxing with a

covered patio in the back. Owner Susan Mendenhall

kept most of the indoor historic look such as the

limestone walls. Crystal chandeliers, cozy corner

loveseats and jeweled-toned throw pillows and rugs

give it a nice contemporary touch.

Last, but certainly not least, is the variety of wines

to choose from. Whether you are in the mood for

something light and refreshing, a full-bodied red, or

a little bubbly to celebrate a special occasion, they

have what you want. not sure what to pick? Just ask

the friendly and knowledgeable staff for assistance,

and they will gladly help you select something that is

sure to please your palette. Krave also offers a bevy

of cocktail choices if you’re looking for something

with a little more kick.

One nice touch at Krave is that customer suggestions

are always welcomed. Customers can fill out cards

and give their suggestions regarding wines, beers,

spirits and food ideas. And after you get your food

and drink on, you can hop over to Star Co. or Junior’s

to listen to live music.

Krave Wine Bar and Bistro is open Monday through

Thursday 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Friday and Saturday

from 11 a.m. to midnight. For more information on

Krave visit www.kravewinebar.com.

Every once in a while, if you’re lucky... you get to

experience serendipity.

-August 25, 2011 Swift’s Attic blog

For months, Austin has been anticipating the opening

of Swift’s Attic, a collaboration between C.K. Chin

and the owners of Paggi House.  There have been

tweets, blog posts, and appearances by the all star

chef team at events like La Dolce Vita and Edible

Austin’s Drink Local.   Anticipation built as Matt

Clouser (Kenichi, Jeffrey’s) was named executive

chef of the restaurant occupying the space that

formerly housed Kyoto.

When construction began, beautiful hardwood

floors, exposed beam ceilings, and historic brick

walls were revealed leading to the spare design

which allows the space to speak.  Modern angular

light fixtures combine with antique repurposed

brass industrial pieces to give a feeling of traveling

to the past in a contemporary lounge.

As Clouser was originally committed to other projects,

Chin was happy to have him as a menu consultant,

but serendipity stepped in to free Clouser up.  Chin’s

vision of a bar driven establishment developed

into a chef driven one.   Zack Northcutt (Mulberry,

Haddington’s) was added to the roster as sous chef

when he became available, magnifying the culinary

power. The triumvirate was completed with the

addition of pastry chef Callie Speer (Mars, Parkside).

If the name Speer sounds familiar it is because

she is married to philip Speer, director of culinary

operations at Uchi.   Friendly competition between

the two is inevitable, but Callie holds her own with a

unique style she has been developing for years.  She

gained her reputation under her maiden name of

Whigham as the original pastry chef at Parkside.  The

new pastry menu at Swift’s is a playful take on

familiar flavors in a decidedly upscale way.   The

popcorn and a Movie dessert combines a Kit Kat like

candy bar topped with popcorn gelato, housemade

caramel corn, and a root beer gel.

The challenges in construction and conception

of Swift’s Attic were met with even better

opportunities.   The talented staff is unified and

focused.  C.K. Chin summed it up best, “When there

is that kind of energy, great things can happen.”  Do

yourself a favor, experience it for yourself.
