Bridge is their game, celebrations are their milestones. These ladies of Broken Soundhave been together for 15 years. Playing bridge every Wednesday and joyfully celebratinga bridge player’s milestone birthday ending in a 0 or 5. Marilyn Rosenblum is the partyplanner and keeps all of their ages in her secret vault. The ladies write poetry, make upsongs to honor the birthday woman, buy an orchid, and/or give a large giftcard, but mostof all it’s the warmth and caring friendship that gives each woman a thrill! Limited to 16members because they play with duplicate boards, but they will invite outside friends to fillin when an original player is not available.

In response, TJAM received the following note from Bill Moyers:

“Dear Mrs. Kamen:I was very touched by your letter and the contribution in honor ofDale Sprintz. What a wonderful spirit she possessed – and how fortunate she was to havecolleagues like you. Your sentiments – another example – renew my resolve to keep doingthis work. Bill Moyers”

After playing golf for many years and never really improving, JudyMetzger heard about the new Golf Academy at Broken Sound. She decided to give her game one last shot and dedicated herselfto improving her game this season. With the Academy’sunconditional money back guarantee, she had nothing to lose. Asshe said “If it worked, great. If it didn’t, then I would accept my 40handicap and leave it at that.”

With Scott, Mike, Barbara and Matt as teachers, Mrs. Metzgersaid “I can’t rave enough about the Academy. The Academy offersa ½ hour lesson every week, a clinic once a month, special evening clinics, and best of allyou get to play with the pro every month. They can see how you are playing on the course, which helps a lot at your private lesson.”

So how did Judy Metzger do after these lessons? “I am proud to say, I won 3 tournamentsthis season: Broken Sound Member Member Low Gross with Lauren Schor, GleneaglesLadies’ guest day, first place and Boca West Ladies’ guest day, first place.”

Congratulations and well done!

When Scott was asked about when he first started playing golf, he said his firstmemory was when his father, a club champion and scratch amateur golfer, gave him

2 member guests to 5. Our memberguests are now considered the best inthe area by many attendees.

He has improved the pace of play throughstaff training and has maximized spaceon the course through crossover teetimes. Operations have been streamlinedwhile maintaining the hospitality membersdeserve. One of the most popular recentprograms has been the Golf Academywhere Scott has initiated the memberimprovement program guaranteeingimprovement or members get theirmoney back. (See separate article on oneof our member’s results with thisprogram.)

Most people don’t see the administrativerequirements for this type of position andthe best example would be how Scottnegotiated with Club Car regarding ourgolf cart fleet. After a damaging accidentwith one of the carts at the club, Scottpursued the problem with Club Car untilthey initiated a nationwide fleet recall. Thisresulted in our obtaining a new fleet ofgolf carts as well as a replacement fleetof batteries which extended the life of ourcarts three additional years for asubstantial savings to the club. An articleabout this appeared in a national golfpublication.

On a personal note, Scott is married toHolli and has a six-year old son namedSawyer. He coaches Little League baseballand volunteers as a boxing referee forthe Police Athletic League. But Scott’sfirst love (after family of course) is golfand he loves that his hobby and job areone and the same.

the choice to either keep his pacifier orthrow it away and go to the golf course.Scott chose the golf course.

Born in South Orange, NewJersey, Scott moved toSan Diego as a child andlater moved to Philadelphiawhen in high school. Heplayed golf in school, won a number of juniortournaments and laterbecame the PhiladelphiaJunior Champion. Hethought about going to lawschool after graduatingfrom the University ofDelaware with a PoliticalScience degree but decidedthat golf was his firstlove. He then attended theSan Diego Golf Academy, a two yeargolf operations school.

Scott’s professional career prior toBroken Sound not only includedpositions in Ohio, Tampa and Sarasotabut also was an international one withpositions in Austria and even China. Hewas also offered a position from DavidLeadbetter, one of the premier golfinstructors in the world, to go back toChina and Scott went to Bangkok,Thailand for training; however, hedecided to return to the states and tooka position in Kentucky. Wanting to returnto Florida, Scott learned about aposition available in Boca from hismother, head of the Donna KleinAcademy,so in 2002 Scott returnedhere and was offered the position ofDirector of Golf. After traveling aroundthe world, Scott says there is no placebetter than Boca Raton.

Members are generally not aware thatthe position of Director of Golf is mostlyadministrative and this position has tooversee a large staff, attend meetings, balance budgets, and operate a largepro shop. With his background, his firstand basic philosophy was to transmithis love of golf to people of all ages andabilities and in that regard some of theprograms he initiated and expandedupon include: the Couples Nine and DineProgram, sold-out tournament andleague programs, nine-hole leagues formen and women, and expansion from

When you read this letter the budget process for 2008-2009 will be wellunder way. Our goal this year and every year is to develop a budget

results to return to break even. That isour revenues should equal our expenses. With some good luck we may even showa budget surplus. The Board in the pasthas returned part of the budgetsurpluses to members as a reductionof the Capital Replacement Assessment. In the last two years we have reducedthe Capital Replacement Assessment by$440 per member from budgetsurpluses.

Weather can play havoc to all ourfinancial plans. As we begin the budgetseason we also begin the hurricaneseason. Let us hope that both areuneventful.

that delivers the services our membersexpect at a reasonable dues level. Thisprocess will be extremely difficult thisyear as we have experienced substantialprice increases across the board, especially in food, energy and anyproducts derived from oil. Managementis working closely with each departmenthead to develop a budget that will offsetthese cost increases with savings andto explore whether any price increasesare needed. Our goal is to keep any priceincreases to a minimum.

For the whole year we budget to break-even including dues. At this time in ourbudget cycle we budget for expenses toexceed revenues from operations.Expenses exceed Revenues by $58,000through March 31, 2008 which isahead of the budget of $224,000 by$166,000. Women’s Club

Well, this was one terrific season for Women’s Club! With a Fashion ShowSeminar to kick off the season, and speakers like Professor Robert Watson,Dr. Joyce Saltman (laughter consultant) and Randy Dellago and troupe fromthe Delray Beach Playhouse, how could we not succeed?

Our varied trips made the season all the more exciting: Who could top a dayat The Isle Casino, or the tour of the new Carnival Performing Arts Center inMiami, or the Boca Raton Museum Trip for the Degas and Tiffany Glassexhibits, or lunch at Mar-A-Lago? My thanks go to all the board memberswho organized and hosted these events.

Check the Fall newsletter for details of next season. It promises to beanother great year, so won’t you please join us? Don’t forget that yourmembership is automatically renewed UNLESS we hear from you to thecontrary by August 22nd.

Have a safe and healthy summer wherever the roads take you.Marjorie Lassoff, President
