20 Years 2014
May God Bless each family present. And bless our entire Holy Family Parish.
Make it like the family of your Son. May our moments of sorrow, give way to the seasons of joy. May the memory of harsh words fade before the warmth of a loving touch. May the tears of sorrow be
replaced by the music of laughter. May resentment be banished from our families, and may forgiveness reign in our hearts. Today and everyday. Amen!

There are two types of candles that are used to count down to Christmas
Day in Advent. The first looks like a normal candle, but has the days
leading up to Christmas Day marked on the candle. On the first of De-
cember the candle is lit and burnt down to the first line on the candle.
The same is done every day to Christmas Eve and then the rest of the
candle is burnt on Christmas day.
An Advent wreath is a second form of using candles to count down Advent. These are often
used in Churches rather than in people's homes. Such a wreath is typically made up of green-
ery and has four candles around the outside and one in the middle. Sometimes a more tradi-
tional candelabra is used to display the five candles.
As you will see at Holy Family, one candle is lit on the first Sunday of Advent, two are lit on the
second Sunday and so on. Each candle has a different meaning in Christianity as you will hear.
The middle or separate candle is lit on Christmas Day and represents Jesus, the light of the
world. In most churches, the color purple is used to signify the season of Advent. On the third
Sunday, called Gaudete (or Rejoice) Sunday, the color is sometimes
changed to pink or rose. Thus, our Holy Family Advent wreath will have
three purple candles, one rose candle and the white Christ candle.
Various families have been invited to light the appropriate candles on
each weekend of Advent, with appropriate prayers being recited to
indicate the significance of each.

Sunday, November 26th, is the celebration of Christ the King, the last Sunday of the Liturgical Year for the
Church. Seven days later (December 3rd) will be the First Sunday in Advent. The First Sunday in Advent each year
begins a new liturgical year which has the following segments: There are four Sundays in Advent, leading up to
Christmas Eve as we prepare for Christmas. Following Christmas is the Feast of the Holy Family, Epiphany, and
then Ordinary Time. Following Ash Wednesday (on February 14th next year) begins the six Sundays of Lent, Palm
Sunday, then Holy Week and Easter. After the Sundays of Eastertide comes Pentecost, the feasts of the Holy Trini-
ty and Corpus Christi. Then, after many Sundays of Ordinary Time, we end the Liturgical Year with the celebration
again of Christ the King, waiting for the following Sunday which would begin yet another new liturgical year. In
2018, the First Sunday of Advent will be on December 2nd.
These liturgical years are organized into three-year cycles, with each different liturgical year concentrating on one
of the three Synoptic Gospels (Matthew, Mark, and Luke in that order). We have spent most of 2017 progressing
through Matthew’s Gospel for the key Sunday readings during the year (with an occasional Gospel according to
John for special purposes). For this coming liturgical year, plan to listen to the Gospel of Mark for most of the
Sundays in 2018, again with some special occasions presenting readings from John. The year after that will con-
centrate on the Gospel of Luke, and then subsequently start the three year cycle over with Matthew.
As for the Gospel According to Mark, it is considered to be the first of the four Gospels to be actually written,
with the others later drawing on some of the content from Mark (along with other sources). The assumed year of
this Gospel being penned is 70 AD, likely written for Christian readers in Rome. Biblical scholars have concluded
that, as a young lad, Mark witnessed Jesus personally in Jerusalem and as an older follower, was a devotee of and
recorder for Peter. As we proceed through Sunday readings from Mark throughout the year, be aware of the
divisions of his Gospel: Prologue, the ministry of Jesus, His passion, death and burial, His resurrection, His com-
missioning of the apostles, and finally His Ascension.
Welcome to the new Liturgical Year!

As mentioned in last
month’s bulletin, the Banns
of Marriage (commonly
know as the “Banns”) are the
public announcement within
a Catholic church of the
pending marriage between
two specified persons. This term “banns” comes
from a Middle English word for “proclamation.”
“Banns” are traditionally announced for three
consecutive months before a couple’s wedding.
Holy Family is pleased to announce the pending
marriage between Tanie Cabuyandao Lacerna and
Penelope Ramos Modesto, which will take place
next February in Cavite, Philippines.

There are many types of Advent calendars used in different countries. The most common ones in the United Kingdom and the United States are made of paper or cardboard with 24 or 25 little windows on it. A window is opened on every day in December and a Christmas picture is displayed underneath. Each display has a religious scene leading up to the birth of Jesus or some other Christmas scene such as pinecones, Christmas trees, ornaments, etc. The Advent calendars we had available at Holy Family contain a piece of fair trade chocolate (created in Ghana) behind each window. These calendars with chocolates began to be created in the 1950s. In the 1800s, German protestant Christians counted down to Christmas by marking 24 chalk lines on a door and rubbing one off every day in December. Paper calendars became popular in Germany in the early 1900s, although some people still made their own. There's a debate about exactly where and when the first mass-produced calendar was printed - but it was likely in Germany in the early 1900s! During World War II, the production of Advent calendars stopped due to a shortage of cardboard. Some European countries also used a wreath of fir or pine boughs with 24 bags or boxes hanging from it. In each box or bag there was a little present for each day. The world’s larg-est Advent calendar was made in 2007 at the St. Pancras Train Station in London, England. It was 250 ft. tall and 75 ft. wide, and the most expensive Advent calendar ever was made in 2010 by a jewelers in Belgium. It was made of 24 glass tubes each containing some dia-monds and silver and was worth about $3.3 million!!! You can also now get online Advent or 'Christmas Countdown' calendars. During December, you can visit https://www.whychristmas.com/adventcalendar/ and find out something about Christmas each day of the month.
One story about the origin of candy canes
is that many years ago, a candy maker
wanted to make a Christmas treat that
would symbolize the true meaning of
Christmas - the birth of Jesus.
He made a hard candy shaped like a “J” to
represent Jesus. The white candy was to
stand for the pureness of Jesus and the red
to represent the blood that Jesus would
shed.
So the next time to see
a Christmas
candy cane, turn it
upside down and
think about the
possible symbolism
of “J”esus at this time
of the year!
