Back in 1998, something amazing happened to me that made me change the way I lived. That “something” is my wife. Although I had just bought my first property around that time, it really takes 2nd place to finding the right person that would support my next journey. In the year 2000, I decided to become a real estate professional. Every year since then has been better than the rest. Not necessarily income wise but experience wise. In response to consumer demand, leading paint producers now offer brands with low VOCs (volatile organic compounds). VOCs are chemicals that contribute to that ‘new paint smell’ that can sometimes linger for days – even weeks – after a painting project is finished.

Due to concerns over the impact of VOCs on our environment and health, there is a growing trend among Canadians to seek out paints with low or no VOCs. The quality of these paints has improved dramatically over the last decade.

Here are five major brands advertised in Canada as having low or no VOCs:

Horizon by Cloverdale Paints

Lifemaster® by Glidden Professional (formerly ICI Dulux)

Natura™ by Benjamin Moore RONA COLLECTION paints

Olympic Premium Zero-VOC

Not all low VOC paints are created equally. In Canada, Ottawa-based Eco Logo gives its third-party seal to low-VOC paints that meet its standards. In the U.S., the Green Seal organization provides certification for products meeting its specifica-tions.

Brands of low and no-VOC paints by manufacturers Denalt, Bétonel and Sico are among those that have achieved the Ecologo seal.

Boomerang Paints is an environmentally conscious company that recycles used paint and resells it under its low VOC brand. Boomerang paints are available in a variety of retail locations in eastern Canada.

Most paint manufacturers offer retail store locators on their websites. Low VOC brands vary in price. If you are not sure how much paint you will need to purchase for your next project, visit the RONA online paint calculator.

Greater Toronto REALTORS® report March Resale Market Figures

April 6, 2010 -- Greater Toronto REALTORS® reported 10,430 sales through

the Multiple Listing Service® (MLS®) in March, pushing total first quarter 2010 sales to 22,418 – the best result on record under the current Toronto Real Estate Board (TREB) boundaries. The average price for March transac-tions was $434,696. The average price for the first quarter was $427,948.
