I will warn you: there will be some clichés in this article. To begin, in 2008, shortly after joining the

club, I attended a board meeting. I have been involved with several not-for-profit organizations and clubs through the years, but I was amazed at how the board meeting functioned.

It seemed very casual, with some humor and good na-tured kidding, but everyone who had a report made their report, and the meeting finished on time. I have been a member of the board since 2009, and all of the meetings have been that way. I would strongly recom-mend that every member attend a board meeting to see how your club is run.

Now for a cliché: I have some big shoes to fill. John Hamilton and Mike Brodigan and James Shoffit have set a pretty high standard. I will do my best to continue the tradition of inclusion and forever open to new ideas and involvement from members to enhance the experi-ence for all members.

Now for another cliché: You only get out of an activity what you put into it. In fact, with our club, you actually get more back than you put into it. So if you are think-ing that you may not renew your membership because you are not getting much out of it, try attending a board meeting or one of our many activities. One of the best events for you to attend to find out about all of our activities is the All Member Party on Saturday, January 24, 2015. You will even see a tremendous assortment of Porsches.

Our club provides a varied assort-ment of activities so the members can enjoy their special vehicles and the other members. This only happens because of members giv-ing their time and abilities to those events to happen. Come join them in making the best Porsche Club in the country that much better.

Remember, it’s not just the cars, it’s the people.

Mav of the Month

Our monthly award is given out to recognize special contribu-

tions to the club; sometimes over a short term, and sometimes over a longer term. This month’s goes to contributors who have put thousands of miles on their Porsches and spent hundreds of hours at their com-puter over the past four years to ensure that so many others of us have a great time on a Sunday or Saturday. Through their efforts, they have taken us to wineries, chocolate factories, airplane museums, glass-blowing factories, barbecue joints, and through every backroad

and narrow bridge in this part (and other parts) of Texas. They set a new record for attendance on the Sunday Drives in 2014, both in total attendance and in single-event at-tendance (92 Porsches to German-fest).

So with no further ado, our Mavs of the Month are B.J. and John Harvey, Tourmeisters par excellence for the past four years. They have retired from that responsibility as of December, but will still be joining us on our tours in the future.

Thank you, B.J. and John. Enjoy your gift card to the Silver Fox. It is but a small token of our apprecia-tion.

President Jim Falgout [email protected]

Jim joined Maverick Region in August,

2008. He drives a 2003 996, which is

the third Porsche he has owned. Jim

enjoys attending Maverick Region

social and driving events.

Vice President Gareth Maurice C 817-821-2940 [email protected]

Gareth still remembers the cover of the car magazine that drew him into a lifetime of loving cars. He spent many afternoons riding his bike as a young kid to the local newsstand to buy and read everything he could. He now owns a Midnight Blue 911S and enjoys driving it in wonderful Texas!

Secretary Wendy Shoffit C 972-977-9821

[email protected] and husband James joined Maverick Region in 1997, when their daughter was only 9 months old. Jasmine is now 17. They own 3 Porsches including a 1978 911SC as a dedicated racecar, which she enjoys autocrossing. Her daily driver is a 2000 Boxster. She also serves as the PCA National Newsletter Chair.

Treasurer Richard Solomon C 903-530-8281 [email protected]

Richard joined Maverick Region in 2012 when he fulfilled a 30+ year dream to own his first (of many) 911, a 2009 Silver Carrera! Although fairly new to the club, he is excited about being more involved and meeting more Porsche fanatics!

Let me be one of the first to wel-come you to 2015. This year will see quite a bit of change in

the Maverick Region. We have a new President and Treasurer, new Sunday Drive and Rally Chairs, a big departure in our Autocross and Time Trial pro-grams (more on that in the February

issue), and a new face on the Slipstream board page.

Jim Hirsch joined PCA and the Maverick Region ear-lier this year when he and wife Sharon purchased a new 2014 Boxster S to fulfill a promise he had made to him-self years ago: to travel the United States via its widely varying roadways in a suitably sporty and reliable car. You can read Jim’s article in the December issue to find out more about their recent trip.

Jim is also a member of the Ford SVT Club, and has ed-ited their newsletter for several years. When Jim found out that I was looking to reduce my involvement in pro-ducing Slipstream every month, Jim graciously offered to explore the possibility of taking on some of those duties. I met with Jim in person to explain and show him what

is involved in putting out our monthly newsletter, and surprisingly (and thankfully) I didn’t scare him away!

Jim and I are in the process of turning the Editorship into a partnership between the two of us for a time, while Jim gets up to speed with how our club works. The details of when and how we will pass the mantle have not been decided; I still enjoy editing the widely varying stories that are submitted to Slipstream each month, in-cluding the dull stuff like correcting spelling, grammar, and syntax, as well as the more interesting stuff like fact checking articles covering Maverick Region, PCA, and Porsche AG and its legendary history of production and racing cars. Jim already has several years’ experience us-ing the software that we use to lay out our magazine, so I am sure that he will be able to get up to speed quickly. He even edited one of the articles in this issue.

For now, Jim and I will be sharing editorial duties so that we each can contribute our own part to Slipstream without having it dominate too much of our free time.

Please welcome Jim to Slipstream, as I have. I believe you will be pleased with the new partnership.

Read on!

Gimme a Minute: December Board MeetingBy Wendy Shoffit, Region Secretary December 3, 2014

6 January

The meet-ing began promptly

at 7:00pm with President John Hamilton being a bit sorrowful/joy-ful about this being

his final board meeting as President after a great four years. He intro-duced guests Gordon and Alexia Hamilton.

Prior to the start of the regular board meeting, a group of inter-ested Mavericks met with represen-tatives from Equip Rapide (ER) and the North Texas Autocross Series (NTAXS) groups. We now have a plan for continuing the Autocross and Time Trial program through their organizations. Travis Howard will continue to put on one Time Trial event at MotorSport Ranch while NTAXS may do others in Min-eral Wells. ER will have 8-10 events next year and will include PCA in their event with our own classing and give us their discounted mem-ber pricing. More details later.

New Slipstream Editor Jim Hirsch wasn’t able to be at the meeting, but passed along an idea for us to pro-duce calendars featuring member cars. Other ideas were suggested to keep subsequent iterations fresh and desirable for members to buy.

John passed along sad news that long ago Maverick President Lee Paulsel passed away. John also for-warded thanks from the Fricks and Suttons for our get well flowers and wishes as they endured medical is-sues. Chris Hamilton sent along her report that we didn’t collect as many Walmart gift cards as usual this year. In total she needs $2750 to provide for kids, moms, and staff members. She collected $170 worth, provid-ing a shortage. We will collect more

at the Frick’n Toy Run, but we will still be short. A motion was made by Richard Solomon to use up to $2500 from the Founders’ Day Silent Auc-tion proceeds to buy gift cards, as needed. The motion was passed.

Social Chair Tracy Robertson re-ported that Founders’ Day was a great event. The location was good, the Silent Auction was easier than last year, and the food was amazing! Attendees really enjoyed the photo contest gallery. Thanks to Charlie for putting it on and to Sue Crimm for providing the lighting. The Si-lent Auction raised a record $5800 for the Hope Shelter. Tracy offered items without bids later to members on Facebook, raising a bit more, above and beyond what we took in that night. We will be publishing names of the donors in Slipstream. Thanks to Autobahn Porsche for their event sponsorship.

Linda Bambina gave her usual hugs and kisses. Despite the Thanksgiv-ing holiday, Slipstream was still out in mailboxes by Dec 3. She gave thanks for newly transferred members, Daniel and Jean Anne Amado for their new energy for the club, and for providing great auction items.

Sunday Drive Chair John Harvey reported that the drive to the Vetro Glass Blowing shop in Grapevine was a big success with 32 cars and 60 people. The event made money. The Frick’n Toy Run was scheduled for Sunday, ending at the San Marti-ño Winery; so far 30 have signed up. He also reported that Neill Flood will be taking over as the new Sun-day Drive Co-chair, assisted by Tom Martin. John will work with them during the next few months.

Rally Chair Don Sebert said that Neill Flood will ALSO Co-Chair on Rallies. He had wanted to do a Rally

in conjunction with the Frick’n Toy Run, but notice was too short and he didn’t have enough time to get it all together. Not to worry, though, he’s working on a great spring and summer event schedule.

Editor Carey Spreen needs to up-date the Board photos (page 4) in Slipstream, so will need the change info by the deadline of Dec 10. It will probably take a couple of months for all to be updated. He will also share those changes with the Webmaster for updates. He also requested Lunches and Board Meet-ing ads for the year. Jim Hirsch will be taking over as Editor, but Carey will work with him the next few months to transition.

With so many moving on, for-mer Past President Mike Brodigan stepped up to say he’s willing to do another job if one comes up for him. Just let him know!

Outgoing Treasurer and incoming President Jim Falgout gave his last report as Treasurer. We have ~$120K in the account. Mike B. suggested we decide on a range for a healthy bank balance and beyond that give more to the members.

Guest Jouni Hiltunen was there to express his appreciation for the club. He is a car maniac who is en-joying the events. His wife, Mollie, also loves that it’s not just the cars, it’s the people!

Outgoing AX/TT Chair Travis Howard reported that the Nov 15-16 event was the last double TT event, which he named the “Texas Knife Fight,” where the fastest time of day received a survival knife and the slowest time of day received a compass. There were 21 drivers on Saturday and ten on Sunday due to a competing SCCA event. He moved the Truxster from Mineral Wells to

Page 9: May at - Porsche Club of Americamav.pca.org/slipstream/ss_jan15.pdfThis month’s goes to contributors who have put thousands of miles on their Porsches and spent hundreds of hours

Zims Autotechnik, who stores it for us during the off-season. We won’t be using our equipment in 2015 since we will be within the ER and NTAXS organizations. Travis is still doing maintenance on the Truxster and will work with Linda Bambina on an end-of-year AX/TT awards event.

Histographer Charlie Davis report-ed that the photo contest was a great success. He has printed pictures for entrants who weren’t at Founders’ Day to pick them up. He will give the results to Carey to publish. He has also been working with webmas-ter Denny Payne to make changes to the website, including a new Photo Gallery page. The goal is to get more people to contribute great photos for both Slipstream and the website.

Incoming treasurer Richard Solo-mon will be getting together with Jim Falgout to make the transition. Richard suggested we update the current brochure with more current

pics. He also noted ways the club can give more back to the community; for example, the Make a Wish Foun-dation. Teri Davis suggested maybe have another Braille Rally to benefit an organization for the blind, as the club did years ago.

Concours Chair Andy Kay com-mented that he is impressed with the Maverick group and will be step-ping up his commitment this year. More events!

James Shoffit asked for email for-warding changes for all the new people in new positions.

Secretary Wendy Shoffit mentioned that Zone 5 Rep Lynn Friedman ex-pressed an interest in having Maver-ick ladies help out with a Ladies AX school in Oklahoma. More details to come. She also reported the 2015 board election results. President: Jim Falgout; Vice President: Gareth Maurice; Treasurer: Richard Solo-mon; and Secretary: Wendy Shoffit.

Finally, John Hamilton announced the winners of Mav of the Month, John and BJ Harvey, for their awe-some work on Sunday Drives. Con-gratulations!

Meeting was adjourned at 8:24pm.

Author’s note: This is an excerpt from a letter that new member Daniel Amado shared with me and I wanted to share with you.

Dear Caren [Cooper, President-

Elect of PCA, past Zone 5 Rep, past Prez of Austin’s Hill Country Re-gion],

So much “good stuff” has happened to me since we met at Porscheplatz [the gathering of PCA members at COTA for Lone Star Le Mans last September].

So many great people have had a positive impact in my life. I am very fortunate to have had such great ex-periences.

Let me see, where should I start? Ok, here we go.

So, I contact Tracy Robertson at MR to find out how I can volunteer for Porscheplatz and she kindly di-rects me “to the one and only” Lynn Friedman. Lynn goes out of her way and makes all of the arrangements, How nice to have so many courtesies extended to us!

My wife and I are immediately embraced and shown the ropes of registration, etc. Needless to say, we had a fabulous time and are looking to volunteer again next year.

In the process, Lynn introduces us to none other than Linda Bambina, who proceeds to pique our interest in getting involved with MR. Lynn and Linda get me motivated to join the PCA instructors’ teams with MR and LSR/HCR and proceeds to introduce me to the regions’ CDIs [Chief Driving Instructors].

Linda invites us to a board meet-ing and then motivates me to attend one of the “socials” at Uncle Julio’s.

She kindly directed me to Stephanie Ho. What a “firecracker”! She made me feel very welcomed, being new to the club and all, and took some fun pictures together. The Mavs recognized me as being new and reached out to me in a warm and friendly way. After chatting with some of the Mavs, John Harvey and his lovely wife BJ kindly asked me to join them at their table for dinner. A grand time was had by all.

Next, is the Instructors’ Clinic and DE event at TWS [Texas World Speedway]. Weston [Dillard], whom you kindly introduced me to at Porscheplatz, arranged for me to at-tend the clinic and participate in the DE event. West was so friendly and willing to get me involved with the LSR and HCR instructors. He gave “carte blanche” to run and even in-struct, as much as I wished. He was nice enough to drive me around the track in his Boxster, which we did in a very spirited, fun way. OK, it was a blur!! So I approached a few other instructors and hitched rides with them. Everyone was open to show me around, so I quickly learned the track. Bill Tutt also welcomed me to the team, which made me feel very honored. Bill was hilarious at Ross Bentley’s (very informative) clinic which made it even more fun!

So, it was now my turn to brave the incredible TWS in my “little Jetta that could,” which I did under Brad’s guidance in the Blue run group. [Daniel’s track toy, a 1986 951 that he has owned since new, was not available at the time.] I was a real “back marker” but we survived the task. West encouraged me to take on a student, and quickly intro-duced me to Tracey Gross. She was a bit frustrated because everyone was “so much faster!” She welcomed me with open arms and we took to the track. We worked on being smooth-

er rather than trying to simply go faster. I told Tracey that she was way too nice because she was so worried about the drivers behind her. She is an extremely good listener, which makes for the perfect student.

Finally, Sunday comes and I am at the DE event at the MSR short track, where I am to be inducted into the Mav instructor team. Linda introduces me to John Sandusky and Wendy Shoffit, who make all of the arrangements for me to attend the event. Wendy checked me in and I quickly met Keith Olcha, who was in charge of the event. Keith in-troduced me to David Hodges and asked him to drive me around the track and ride with me afterwards. David “drove the wheels off” my “lit-tle Jetta that could” in three fast and furious laps, which I enjoyed very much. I didn’t know that it could go that fast! I guess it’s all about the driver and not necessarily the car. Ok, now after I catch my breath, it’s my turn. No pressure, right!? Well, I did the best I could, being a bit rusty and all, but apparently it was good enough for David to give the “green light” to Keith for me to join the Mav instructor team. It was truly a proud moment for me. David was very complimentary and encourag-ing while I was “pedaling as fast as I could” on the track.

Caren, I know that you played an important part for all of this great stuff to happen, and for that I am so grateful. As you can see, so many good people touched me in such a special way. It is not a cliché! It is truly all about the people!

I hope that I can reciprocate in some way.

Thank you and all of the PCAers that were so helpful and welcoming.

Best wishes.

“ . . . it’s the people”: Letter from a New MaverickAs Told to Linda Bambina, Region PR Chair

Page 12: May at - Porsche Club of Americamav.pca.org/slipstream/ss_jan15.pdfThis month’s goes to contributors who have put thousands of miles on their Porsches and spent hundreds of hours

I hope everyone had an extremely happy holiday season! I’m sure, like myself, you are all still stuffed

from Thanksgiving and Christmas and maybe a still a little groggy from New Year’s, but it is time to snap out of your winter coma. Freshly-minted 2015 is a new year full of innovative

production Porsche models, engaging Slipstream arti-cles, jam-packed and entertaining Maverick events, and all around Porsche family fun. I look forward to anoth-er amazing year with my Maverick family and friends.

Now that my heartfelt introduction has been ex-pressed, let’s jump right back into the suspension rebuild of my 1974 914. As promised, this month I will focus on the ball joints. The ball joint is located at the bottom of the strut and connects the A-arm to the strut assembly. It is a key component in the suspension system because it rotates and pivots while the steering is turned and cushions the up-and-down motion of the shocks and struts. The Haynes manual and Wayne Dempsey’s 101 “Projects for Your 911” both recommend changing the joint every 100k miles or

so, but if your front suspension feels a little shaky and loose, it wouldn’t hurt to get the ball joint inspected.

To remove the joint you must first punch out the pin located at the bottom of the strut. Normally this pin can be tapped out with a large hammer and a punch,

but it might need to be drilled out if you find the pin has seized, become too rusty, or if it breaks off during your removal attempt. The easiest way I found to drive the pin out was to screw a nut onto the exposed threads and hit the nut with your hammer, being careful not to hit anything else but the nut/pin. Unfortunately for my 914, I found an 18mm bolt in place of the pin on my passenger side strut (one of those previous owner surprises). Having been gifted even more bad luck, the bolt snapped in half while I tried to wrench it out! Needless to say, a 10-minute job turned into a couple of hours; I had to remove the strut assembly and carefully drill out the remaining pieces of bolt.

Once the pin is out, the next step is to remove the cotterpin and large washer that are both located on the underside of the ball joint. With these removed now comes the tricky part: getting off the humon-gous castellated nut that holds the ball joint in its A-arm housing. Again there are multiple ways to achieve the successful removal of the nut. It is recommended by most to use the special ball joint removal tool (part number # P 210) to get it off, but as it is with any expensive tool, I have heard and read mixed reviews about its use and overall necessity.

The tool is really just an oversized socket that fits onto the castellated nut, and is supposed to be strong enough to break it free. Some people on various forums have described their horror stories of the tool breaking while attempting to loosen the nut, and stress that the tool should only be used for installation and

torquing. Conversely, many others have used the tool for both the removal and installation processes with nothing having gone wrong. I think it’s best to assess the wear and amount of rust present on your specific car. If other (much smaller) nuts have been difficult to get off, then the ball joint nut will probably give you grief, and a more destructive method might be needed. Other options for remov-ing the nut include: smacking it with a hammer and chisel, cutting it with a Dremel tool, or force-fully turning it using the leverage gained with a large pipe wrench. It is important to note that if you decide to use one of these more aggressive methods, you will need to buy a new nut for the ball joint. If that was already your intended goal, then by all means, cut away! But if you want to reuse your nut, then spring for the tool. Porsche makes them available for a reason.

Since I opted to replace the nut, I chose the pipe wrench method. The teeth of the wrench locked on tight and the nut miraculously came loose after a few solid whacks with my rubber mallet. After you twist off the nut, gently tap the ball joint to separate it from the strut and to get it out of its housing. If the joint still gives

you problems, you can pull out a pickle fork and pry it out like we did with the old tie rods last month. When you finally get the joint disconnected from the strut and out of the A-arm housing, the next step is to clean the entire area thoroughly, making sure you wipe away all dirt and debris. Good old Simple Green and/or WD-40 are my go-to cleaning products.

Installation is fairly straightfor-ward. Pop the new ball joint into its housing, and rotate it so that the wedge that is cut out of the top pin is facing the inner wheel well. This is an important step, because in order to successfully install the strut and the strut’s pin, the wedge on the ball joint needs to match the groves on the new pin. After you pop the ball joint back into the

strut and tap in a new pin, you can now reinstall the large castellated nut; make sure you torque it to 184 ft-lbs (250 N-m). The final step is to reinstall the large washer and button up the whole assembly with a shiny new cotter pin.

Tune in next month when we will replace the shocks. Konis, Boges, and Bilsteins, oh my!

They don’t call it Novem-

brrrr for nothin’. Right in the midst of the latest polar vortex (where do they come up with these terms?),

the Maverick Region hosted its penultimate “Sunday Drive” of the season. This time, on a Saturday; but then again, who’s counting?

Thirty-two Porsches, driven and navigated by some hearty souls indeed, ventured out to Lake Worth for the start, in 40° cold and a 10 mph wind to boot. Driv-ers with sticky high performance summer tires had reason for concern, and there were some who noted some overall lack of grip in their cars during the drive.

Sunday Drives typically utilize secondary or country roads, devoid of residences and traffic as much as possible. They encompass a variety of corners intended to

properly exercise the drivers’ cars, thereby enhancing the Porsche experience for the driver – and in most cases – the passenger. In most cases. Fortunately, my wife enjoys the occasional frenetic backroads “exploration,” so it’s all good.

The route for this particular drive, put together by John Har-vey and Brendan Eagan, was a circuitous foray through the towns of Springtown, Briar, Rhome, Justin, Flower Mound, and Tro-phy Club, before ambling into historic downtown Grapevine.

A pre-drive was conducted two weeks prior to the event, during which it became apparent that some elements of the route needed to be ”tweaked.” So, on the day of the drive, none of the group leaders had actually driven the revised route. And what a surprise it was when, at mile 49, the tarmac vanished and was replaced by fine gravel. I feel so sorry for the poor soul in the 2012 911 Carrera

behind me when we hit the dirt. He was immediately enveloped in a cloud of white dust! All I could see in my mirrors was two lighted headlights. After two memorable miles, we encountered tarmac again, and traveled the rest of the route without incident.

Once we arrived in the tony downtown section of Grapevine, Mavericks were treated to a demon-

stration in the art of glassblowing at the Vetro Glassblowing Studio & Gallery, conducted by three dedicated craftsmen. The entire process of creating a stunning vessel from blown glass is fascinat-ing. It’s almost like experiencing a symphony, with the crescendo blossoming as the artwork is flared into its final shape.

After the demonstration, we Mavericks were left to our own devices. Some of us corralled at the Café Italia in town, where we all enjoyed some nice Italian food, wine, and great Maverick camaraderie. As always, the driv-ing experience of the “Sunday Drive” was GREAT, but as it’s been proven many times before, “It’s not just the cars, it’s the people.”

A big shout-out goes to Chris and Gabe Sorrells, who drove their brand spankin’ new, just-picked-it-up-yesterday, less than 100 miles on the clock, still smells like Zuffenhau-sen, 2015 911 Turbo out to the drive and stoically soldiered through the gravel road section. Hey, if the Porsche test driv-ers can do it, they can too, right?

Hope to see you all on the next “Sunday Drive”!

Here is a little-known perk of taking Euro-pean Delivery of a new Porsche. Maurice Efune, owner of Ascot Diamonds (and a

member of Maverick Region) took delivery of a new Cayman GTS back in October. The car he ordered was not quite ready yet, so he got a loaner, pictured here. (Maurice actually ordered a white one.)

And yes, that photo (as well as the cover photo) is of Maurice driving the loaner . . . at the Nürburgring! So if you plan on ordering a new Porsche, and have ever had the desire to drive at the Nürburgring, you may want to consider European Delivery!

The Tub Club Goes to Arkansas: From the Car’s Point of ViewAs Told to Barbara Madsen by her 356 Photos by the Car’s Owner

Although I am almost 52 years old, I still enjoy going on adventures with my Porsche

parents, so when I heard we were driv-ing to Arkansas on a trip organized by Mickey Murfee, my tailpipes started quivering in enthusiasm. Mickey sent a lot of great information about

Arkansas to all of the Porsche parents, which included lots of maps, so we would know exactly where to go.

Most of us met in Hot Springs, and our adventure really started there. I looked around the parking lot at the hotel and saw a number of other 356s besides myself. Then I noticed several youngsters in our group: various years of 911s, a Cayman, and a Boxster, making a total of 18 cars. Hmm – I was a bit concerned when everyone’s engines came to life. The familiar pocketa-pocketa sound of my 356 engine was drowned out by the throaty rumble of those young-sters. However, they seemed fairly well mannered,

and we all discovered there are a lot of meandering roads with many twists and turns in Arkansas.

The cars headed toward Eureka Springs on back roads, surrounded by trees changing into the fiery colors of the fall season, and ended up separating into different groups on the way. Some of those small roads were easy to miss, especially if you were looking at the gorgeous scenery. However, it re-ally didn’t matter, as all the roads in the area were fun to drive and had lots of curves. Let me remind you that I was made to handle curves easily.

We visited many interesting places on our routes: Thorncrown Chapel, Pea Ridge Civil War Battle-field, Crystal Bridges Art Museum, and the War Eagle Mill were some examples. We also crossed the longest remaining suspension bridge in Arkansas.

After Eureka Springs, we traveled to Magazine Moun-tain to enjoy the beautiful scenery there. It was fun to be above misty clouds. After four days of fun driving, all of us headed home for a well-deserved rest in our garages.

It was one of those days when the sky

came down and wrapped itself around the world. The rain clawed at the windows of the building like

an angry cat and tried to sneak in ev-ery crevice. It was almost malicious the way it came down, a million fin-gers that drummed a constant, mad-dening tattoo on the windows.

My name is Hammer. Sledge Ham-mer. What people call me is some-thing else. I’m a private eye. It says so on my door. I’ve got eight slugs in me. One’s lead, and the rest are bourbon. The drink packs a wallop, and I pack a revolver.

I was sitting at my desk, watching the smoke curl from the end of my Lucky Strike, wondering where my next case would come from, when I noticed the pointed silhouette against the glass on my door.

She was one of those fancy Dallas socialites, a real classy dame. I’d seen her picture a few times before in the paper. She had a reputation that preceded her, in fact, she had two of them, and they were headed

straight for me. She was cute too; cute as lace panties.

Seems she was seeking out the loca-tion of the latest PCA Maverick So-cial, but was coming up boxcars. I’ve taken a few missing person cases in my day, but never a case for a miss-ing event.

“So why me? There must be a dozen private eyes in this town who could handle a job like this.”

“Word has it you have the hottest Porsche in town, so I chose you.”

“You heard wrong, dollface. I make payments every month, just like ev-eryone else.”

I didn’t know whether to take her comment as an insult or a compli-ment, but what the hell, I really needed the dough. The fifty bucks felt snug against my ribs.

“So, you don’t know the where of this shindig; do you know the when?” I asked.

“Around six o’clock, the third Thursday of every month.”

“That’s four hours from now, and Dallas is three hours away. Doesn’t give me much time.”

“We’d better hurry then, Hammer.”

“Hold on, sweetheart. I work alone.”

“I’ve got a brand new 918 Weissach Edition waiting for us downstairs.”

“With the Liquid Metal Chrome Blue paint?”

“You betcha. And full carbon fiber interior.”

“Let me just grab my hat and a pack of Pall Malls.”

We landed at the Egyptian Room on Mockingbird when I got a tip. Some mug suggested I play E8 on the jukebox. I dropped in a slug.

Turns out the tune was “The Most Beautiful Girl in the World” by Charlie Rich. Then it hit me like the hot kiss at the end of a wet fist. Back in the day, Charlie was known as the “Silver Fox.” I loaded the info into the navigation system of the 918, and we were off to the Silver Fox restaurant in Grapevine.

We cruised the parking lot; she recognized most of the cars. All the West Side gang were there: John Hamilton, Mike Brodigan, Steve Rapfogel, Carey Spreen and Sue

Crimm, the Connells, and of course the always effervescent ringleader herself, Stephanie Ho.

Suddenly, she didn’t feel like going inside. She threw me a smile I could feel in my hip pocket. I parked the car. It’s amazing what can happen when the spirits are willing and the flesh is not so weak . . . even in a Porsche.

We headed back into town. She slid a couple of Chesterfields from

my deck and lit them for us. Too bad the 918 doesn’t have an ashtray. Right then, life was good.

Many thanks and sincerest apologies to Mickey Spillane, master of the Noir detec-tive genre. Props also to Bill Watterson (Calvin and Hobbes) and the Firesign Theatre. -- T.M.
