First thoughtsDavid hull, Pastor
the words of Job 1:21 are running through my mind: “the LorD gave, and the LorD has taken away; blessed be the name of the LorD.” (EsV)
this sunday i enter the company of folks who will be observing Mother’s Day without a Mother who is living. i realize that many are in the company before me, but i have always been able to celebrate with my Mom (usually by long distance) on this special day that we honor our mothers. sunday will be different. As Job said, “ . . . the LorD has taken away.”
This Sunday our daughter will celebrate her first Mother’s Day as a mother! What joy we have in our family now as six-month-old Liam is a precious gift of god’s grace. i will rejoice with Emily and Josh as they enter into Mother’s Day (and later Father’s Day). As Job said, “the LorD gave . . .”
the rhythm of life includes empty seats at the table and new chairs that are added around the table. We mourn our losses and rejoice with our additions. Not only do i feel that as Mother’s Day approaches, but Christmas was a poignant reminder as well. It was the first Christmas without Mom – but Sarah was there with her beautiful radiance to brighten up the celebration. Yes, that is the sarah that i mentioned in my sermon on sunday. she is now engaged to be married to our son Andrew. “the LorD gave, and the LorD has taken away . . .”
“Blessed be the name of the LorD.” in the midst of the losses and additions we worship and praise our god. sunday will be an opportunity for us to do just that. our journey through the transformation of Easter People takes us to the first church business meeting (Acts 1:12-26). It is a story about leadership in the church. I think it is also God’s Word for us about the losses and additions that we experience in life. Even in the story of this business meeting, there are lessons for mothers and those who honor their mothers, living or deceased. i hope that you will join us as we explore these lessons together.
“the LorD gave, and the LorD has taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.” AMEN.
