MAY 8 & 9, 2021 SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER THE PRESENCE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT We have a unique episode in the Acts of the Apostles today. A whole roomful of people are baptized with the Holy Spirit before they are baptized with water! The verb used —“the Holy Spirit ‘fell’ on them” (Acts 10:44)—is characteristic of the way the Spirit works throughout the Book of Acts: powerful and surprising. Though this “baptism” is not the normative way the New Testament describes baptism, it is still a good reminder today that the Holy Spirit is not controlled by whether or not we pour water, but rather that our sacramental signs reveal the presence of the Spirit at work among us. And we have a double reinforcement of how this work is accomplished from a Letter and a Gospel bearing John’s name. It is love, self-sacrificing and self-giving love, that manifests the Spirit of Jesus in our midst. It is love that is the greatest of commandments. The Spirit is manifested equally through those who live in that love. THE CATHOLIC MASS The Mass was begun by Jesus in order to make Himself and His redeeming Crucifixion always present for us. This act of divine love makes possible our unity with Him so we can survive our earthly trial. The Mass has three main parts. First, we must offer ourselves to be united with Him. Second, we must consent to be broken and die to earthly life as He was. Thirdly, He unites Himself to us when we receive Holy Communion; He is incorporated into us and we are incorporated into Him. Thus, the Mass is in accordance with the great law of nature that there is a pathway by which all things become part of a higher form of being. Atoms and sunlight become plants, which become animals, which are taken into human life, and we become part of God Himself in Catholic Holy Communion. PRAY FOR OUR FAMILY MEMBERS IN THE MILITARY Jovany Baez, Justin Mertle, María de la Luz Ramírez, Rebeca Sánchez, José Araiza, Jr., Marina González, Alondra Jara, Sonia Jara, Jason Lorenz, Matt Mills & Jared Schroeder. PASTORAL RUMINATIONS By Father Andre Querijero The flurry of parish activities these past two weeks already signals our slow yet safe return to normalcy after over a year of strict pandemic restrictions. On the celebration of the Feast of Our Church Patroness, Our Lady of Good Counsel last April 26th, six of our SJSDR students received the Sacrament of First Communion. It was such an honor opening the Feast and First Communion Eucharistic celebration, processing along with the Candidates and Altar Servers. For the very first time, we used incense without much difficulty as all the church windows were kept open for proper ventilation. Likewise, in compliance with CDC protocol, the First Communicants as well as their parents, godparents and families in attendance were required to register for contact tracing and undergo body temperature check; wear face masks, and maintain social distancing. All that was missing though, was the church choir. Anticipating the State’s announcement of the lifting of all COVID restrictions, I reminded Mr. Jim Gross, our Parish Choir Director, to give our singers and musicians a heads-up for their usual weekly choir practice. In the meantime, our digital playlist of liturgical music would suffice. Another crowd-drawing event was last weekend’s SJSDR’s Huge Spring Yard Sale Fund Drive. Kudos to the organizing team of our Parochial School parents, students, friends and volunteers for their enthusiastic and valued support. Our May 1 and 2 fundraiser made $3,500 in net profit. We are off to a good start preparing for the upcoming 2021-22 School Year. As we aim at doubling our student population to a maximum of thirty-six children, it might be necessary to organize another fundraising activity around October this year. On Saturday, May 15th, our parishioners Octavio Soto and Maria Alcala, proprietors of Angelina’s Restaurant are sponsoring this month’s OLGC Curbside Dinner fundraiser. Their Mexican “to go” dinner consists of Carnitas (deep fried pork), Rice, Beans, Tortillas and Spicy Salsa all for $25. Pick-up will be at the Angelina’s Restaurant along Main Street. Thanks to the monthly curbside dinners, lovingly prepared by our creative and enterprising parishioners, OLGC financially survived 2020. Hopefully by August 1st or 8th, our Annual Catholic Chicken BBQ would push through despite a one-year hiatus. Furthermore, we look forward to your continuing support for our school and other parish projects and programs through our Three-Year Parish Capital Campaign. Expect me to knock at the doors of your homes to personally beg for your kind and generous support to your OLGC faith community. I am deeply grateful and indebted to you, my parishioners. You and your families are included in my personal prayers and Holy Mass intentions. God bless you all.

THE PRESENCE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

We have a unique episode in the Acts of the Apostles today.

THE CATHOLIC MASS

The Mass was begun by Jesus in order to make Himself and His redeeming Crucifixion always present for us.
