Reading: We are currently reading the novel The Keeping Room or Hannah’s Helping Hands to complement our Revolutionary War unit in Social Studies. Social Studies: We have examined the causes of the American Revolution and we will finish the school year examining Westward Expansion. Language Arts: We will conclude our year with an engaging poetry unit and creation of personal student-written poetry books, which we are very excited to explore! Science: In grade 5 science, we are wrapping up our study of plants and what they need to grow and survive. We will wrap up the year with biomes, ecosystems, organisms, and the relationships they have.

6th Grade Social Studies

6th Grade Language Arts

6th Grade Math

Sixth grade Social Studies classes are still in the midst of exploring the Roman civilization and how it grew to become one of the largest world powers of all time. Students have been investigating the beginnings of their early government and how it developed from a republic to a vast empire under the direction of Julius Caesar and Augustus.

As always, please be sure to visit our classroom website (www.lebanonct.org) for homework updates and other important information.

Mrs. Archer

Sixth grade Language Arts classes will be working on writing persuasively throughout the remainder of the year. They will be developing skills in researching a topic, defending a claim using their research and attempting to convince others to agree with their position. Be sure to check the homework page for updates on homework.

Students in sixth grade are finishing up the year with a unit on ratios, rates, and percentages, and a unit in geometry. These are some of our more fun units, and students are excited because they are finally allowed to use calculators to compute their answers! Please remind your student to check the homework page each night. With busy spring recreation schedules, the number of students who “forgot they had homework” is definitely increasing. Thanks for your help and have a wonderful spring!

All 7th grade Social Studies students will be involved in a local history unit. Part of the unit will involve a field trip called THE BIKE-N-HIKE. We will be visiting several historical locations around the Center of our town, Lebanon. As in the past, the class will be divided into two groups. These will be the Bikers and the Hikers. Each group will begin their trip by leaving LMS in different directions and meeting later at the Lebanon Green. In the afternoon, we will tour the different sites along the green. Each student will have certain responsibilities and tasks to complete.

In addition to the Bike-N-Hike, the students will have other planned activities pertaining to our Lebanon Unit. Some of these include a hands-on project, historical research, etc. Students will focus on what makes their town unique.

7th Grade Bike-N-Hike

TUESDAY MAY 28th (RAINDATE: May 29th)

**Any parents interested in biking & hiking should contact Mr. Andrews**

Math

The rest of the year will be devoted to the mixed practice. We will solve problems that involve operations with integers and rational numbers, proportional reasoning, understanding of the percent, fluency in evaluating and simplifying algebraic expressions, solving equations, geometry, statistic and probability. There will be Final Exam at the end of the year.

SCIENCE In your child’s favorite class we have summited our mountains and volcanoes unit and students are continuing their groundbreaking work in geology. Our young scientists will conclude the year looking back into the history of our planet by investigating the geological timeline. Students will be receiving their science folders with all of their papers from the year have been safely stored in the classroom to help them prepare for the final exam in science. Summer break will be here shortly, and with it I hope many of our students will have a great time playing with friends outside!

The 7th grade Language Arts students are finishing up reading The Giver and will be creating a Bloom Ball as a culminating project. Ask to see your student’s work in progress!

8th Grade Language Arts As the year comes to an end in LA, we are ending with our Holocaust unit. The class learned about daily life for Jewish people in Germany during World War II and will read the play The Diary of Anne Frank: Story of a Girl in class. The Job Shadow Expo will take place the morning of May 10th where students will present their boards and “On the Job Day” experience.

Parents and community members are invited to join us from 9:00-10:00 am in the LMS

gymnasium.

8th Grade Civics Our fourth quarter focus in 8th grade Civics will be the U.S. Constitution and The Bill of Rights. Through class discussion, scenarios, music, and dvd clips we will examine both documents and connect them to the students’ lives today. We will closely view the first, fourth, and eighth amendments to make some of those present day connections. We’ll also be doing a mini-unit on our nation’s capital prior to the Washington D.C. trip. Topics of study include the presidential memorials, war memorials, and some of the Smithsonian museums that we will visit. Students will evaluate memorials like the newest FDR Memorial, the WWII Memorial, and the MLK Memorial based on how history is remembered and decision making that was involved in the building process for each memorial.

8th Grade Civics

8th Grade Science

In 8th grade science we are continuing our “Disruptions in Ecosystem” unit. We just wrapped up our case study on wolves in Yellowstone National Park, and are moving on to studying ecosystem models. As we study ecosystem models, we will be taking a closer look at the role of producers, consumers, and decomposers in the overall function of an ecosystem. We will be learning how natural disasters, like fires, affect ecosystems. We will also spend time studying how matter and energy flow in an ecosystem.

8th Grade Field Trip

Washington D.C. Dates of the trip: Tuesday, June 4th to Friday, June 7th. Expect

an early morning drop off on Tuesday (before the buses!) and a late evening pick-up on Friday.

All paperwork (found in the Washington D.C. packet received at the beginning of the year) is now due! If you need new copies, they can be found on my web page. http://cornellscience.weebly.com/washington-dc.html

Remember that medical authorization forms are required for all medication (over the counter & prescription!) The orders that the nurse has on file at the school do not cover your students in D.C. We need separate forms for this particular trip since it is out of state and overnight. Also, students are not to self-carry on the trip, so all meds need to be turned into the nurse 1 to 2 weeks before the trip.

Exploratory Arts Happenings

ART:

Art Student of the Month:

Gabby Zickmann Congratulations Gabby, the May art student of the month! This monthly designation is in recognition of a student who shows exceptional effort and craftsmanship in the art room. Gabby is shown here holding her Illuminated Letter Illustration. This project is still in progress and will soon be painted. This unit began with an introduction to the origins of illuminated manuscripts and letters throughout history. This illustration puts a contemporary spin on an art form that was very prevalent during medieval Europe. Student’s imbued their designs with personal meaning, using their first or last initial. The letters will be painted using gold acrylic paint to emulate the gold leafing that was used historically.

Computers: In 5th and 6th grade classes we are making rapid progress in our typing and work in computer programming. Both of the programs we use are available at home as well (www.code.org) and (www.typing.com) if you are interested in seeing this for yourselves. In 5th grade we are working on Google Docs stories that focus on a story from their lives and a Google Slideshow about “My Place in the World.” In 6th grade we are spending our time working on Google Sheets and the many functions that this useful program features.

In 7th and 8th grade classes we are also using code.org, but we have left typing behind. If you feel that your 7th or 8th grader could benefit from more keyboarding, there are many wonderful (and free) programs available to practice. In 7th grade we are creating a country web page in Google Sites. This project ties into the work 7th graders are doing in their Social Studies classes on the 5 Themes of Geography. In 8th grade we are working in Google Drawings, and have begun our work on animated presentation in a program called Moovly.

As the year moves to a close we will also be be programming drones and virtual robots (xemo.io); coding apps and creating Google Drawings projects. If you miss out on any of these, don’t worry, they will be added into our grade level work 2019-2020.

Lebanon Middle School Page 15 of 45

Library Media: 6th grade students begin each class by practicing their typing skills in typing.com. With partners, they have selected topics for the public service announcements that they will create and are now researching information and taking notes to include in their projects. As the quarter progresses, students will learn about evaluating websites to include a variety of sources in their public service announcements. By the end of the quarter, they’ll have a script and images to be able to share their important messages with their classmates. 8th grade students have selected topics for their research projects and have read for background information in books. They’re now learning about Boolean logic to search for information in the state library’s databases (https://researchitct.org/classicmiddleschool/). Soon, they’ll learn about evaluating websites to gather information from a third type of resource. By the end of the quarter, they’ll have information from a variety of sources and present their findings to their classmates.

INTERVENTION READING

Students in Intervention Reading are working toward meeting the goals they set in the fall. As 1-1 assessments are completed with Ms. Picard, students are checking their progress. All classes are involved in reading novels related to Social Studies or Language Arts topics, with our travels going from the ancient Far East, to Revolutionary America, to Europe in WWII, all the way up to futuristic lands. Students have nightly reading in their novels and share their thoughts and feelings during class discussions and connected writing assignments. Students have also completed independent choices for the quarterly book report. Ask your children about what they’re reading!

As summer approaches, we are getting ready for our summer reading program. Teachers are revising book lists and Nutmeg and other award lists are being reviewed. Students will receive their summer reading packets at the end of the year, but can begin planning their summer reading wish lists this spring. Summer reading is an important part of our program for Language Arts and Reading skill development and allows students to maintain or improve upon gains made during the academic year. Just as children take swimming lessons to improve skills or participate in sports to develop their abilities, continued reading over the summer months is an important activity for academic growth. We hope that you will support your child in this important summer activity.

Box Tops

There will be a friendly homeroom Box Tops collection competition now through May 24. Please send in Box Tops labeled with your student’s homeroom teacher’s name to their homeroom, office, or library. Each student in the homeroom that collects the most Box Tops will receive a small prize.

Starting now and continuing over the summer, Box Tops is making some changes to become digital. If you see this logo, download the app and scan your receipt with the eligible item(s). Your earnings will still benefit LMS! Thank you for clipping and scanning Box Tops! Library Books

Students have been active readers this school year, but it’s time to start looking for overdue books! Please help your student find his/her library books before the school year ends. Students are welcome and encouraged to continue checking out books now through May 30. All library materials are due by May 31. Students will be notified of any unreturned books the first week of June, and bills for any items not returned will be mailed home with report cards. If a book is truly lost, the library will accept replacement copies in lieu of the replacement cost. Thank you in advance for helping get all of the books returned so that everyone can enjoy them again next year! All teacher-recommended books on the summer reading lists from LMS will be brought to the Jonathan Trumbull library by the last day of school so that

students can read and enjoy them throughout the summer!

Screen Addiction and the Health of Our Kids https://naturallysavvy.com/live/screen-addiction-and-the-health-of-our-kids/

Today, kids are spending an unhealthy amount of time on their devices.

Whether it is a phone, tablet, video game or T.V., experts agree that this

widespread use is affecting the health of our children in many ways. The

American Academy of Pediatrics stated in a policy statement

on “Children, Adolescents, and the Media,” that:

“The average 8- to 10-year-old spends nearly eight hours a day with a variety of different

media, and older children and teenagers spend more than 11 hours per day.” Television, long

a popular “babysitter,” remains the dominant medium, but computers, tablets and cellphones

are gradually taking over.

“Many parents seem to have few rules about use of media by their children and adolescents,”

the academy stated, and two-thirds of those questioned in the study said their parents had no

rules about how much time the youngsters spent with media.

Teenagers and young children should not spend more than one or two hours per day with

entertainment media, preferably with high-quality content, and spend more free time playing

outdoors, reading, doing hobbies and “using their imaginations in free play,” the academy

recommends.

Young children before 2 years of age should not be exposed to electronic media, said the

pediatrics academy, because “a child’s brain develops rapidly during these first years, and young

children learn best by interacting with people, not screens.”

Children’s behavior and school performance can be negatively affected with the heavy use of

electronics. Simulated violence, common in many video games can create an immunity to this

type of behavior and causes some children to be more inclined to act violently and lack empathy

towards others.

Lebanon Middle School Page 18 of 45

The Academy of Pediatrics recommends the following guidelines for parents:

Limit the amount of total entertainment screen time to less than 1 to 2 hours per day.

Discourage screen media exposure for children less than 2 years of age.

Keep the TV set and Internet-connected electronic devices out of the child’s bedroom.

Monitor what media their children are using and accessing, including any web sites they

are visiting and social media sites they may be using.

Together, review TV, movies, and videos with children and teenagers, and use this as a

way of discussing important family values.

Model active parenting by establishing a family home use plan for all media. As part of

the plan, enforce a mealtime and bedtime “curfew” for media devices, including cell

phones. Establish reasonable but firm rules about cell phones, texting, Internet, and

social media use
