STEEL FC BEGINS BUSY SLATE IN CHARLESTONFresh off the club’s second victory of the year, Steel FC begins one of the squad’s busiest parts of the 2018 slate with three matches in seven days. The swing begins with a rematch of an early season contest as Steel FC heads south to face off against the Charleston Battery.

PREVIOUS MEETINGSteel FC and Charleston faced off just over a month ago at Goodman Stadium where the two sides battled to a 1-1 draw. The match saw a club-record nine members of the Philadelphia Union earn a start in the contest. Charleston posted only two shots on goal and converted early on as Skylar Thomas headed home a goal. Cory Burke wasted little time finding an equalizer late in the first half.

TAKEAWAYSMOAR GOALS

A finalist for the USL Rookie of the Year in 2017, midfielder Santi Moar had a standout performance last weekend against the Richmond Kickers that landed the 23-year-old on the USL’s Team of the Week. Moar collected his first goal and assist of 2018, setting up Matt Real’s equalizer before scoring the game-winning goal in the second half on his own accord.

COACH’S CORNERBethlehem Steel FC head coach Brendan Burke: On preparing for the Battery this weekend...“I think our focus has to stay on the intent to fill their box with numbers as we go down to Charleston and look ahead at that game now. They do an excellent job of defending, particularly at home, I don’t think that they have conceded in the last three games and they do a little more to come out and press the ball now but they predominantly win the ball back in their own half. If you do intend to bring the game to them, you have to have a very good plan for how you’re going to break them down because they are well organized and not afraid to sit.”

The biggest differences in the Battery since the last matchup...“I think they are more willing to concede possession when we saw them a few weeks ago and I think now, especially at home, they will come out and try and dictate the game a little bit more. They are still not afraid to win the ball back in their half when you look at where they regain possession, it’s all below the center circle. We have to be very sharp when we enter the middle third and have to do a better job than when we saw them the first time of being incisive when we get into their half by committing numbers. That said, they’re hot right now. They have a player like Ataullah Guerra who continues to win them games and they have a lot of very good role player pieces around him that have really stepped up over the last few weeks. It’s a big challenge, they don’t often lose at home over the last couple of years.”

NAJEM IT ONPhiladelphia Union midfielder Adam Najem created Moar’s game-winner last weekend, giving the Clifton, New Jersey native his first helper of the year. With the assist, Najem has set up nine goals in 28 appearances with Steel FC. Najem is the club’s all-time leader in the assist category and leads the team this season in key passes with 11.

RAINING SHOTSWhile the club’s record doesn’t suggest a strong offense, the record itself is misleading. Steel FC enters the weekend ranked third in the USL’s Eastern Conference in shots taken just behind New York Red Bulls II and Louisville City FC. Last weekend the offense fired off a club record 30 shots last weekend against the Kickers. Of the 30 shots, the club placed a record 10 on target while having three shots turned away by the post.

MATCH RECAP

Bethlehem Steel FC overcame a first-half deficit to draw the Charleston Battery, 1-1, at Goodman Stadium on the campus of Lehigh University.

Playing in cool and windy conditions in the Lehigh Valley, Steel FC out possessed Charleston by a 66-34 margin but were only able to net a first-half stoppage time goal from Philadelphia Union forward Cory Burke. The strike was Burke’s first goal of 2018 and pushes his all-time scoring club record to 14 goals.

Nine members of the Philadelphia Union, Steel FC’s MLS-affiliate, notched starts against the Battery, setting a new club record. The chemistry paid off as the club came out on its front foot earning the first scoring chance in the 11th minute as Mark McKenzie found Marcus Epps. With space outside the Battery’s box, Epps fired a curling

shot that missed the far post. Steel FC kept up the pressure and nearly struck first as Burke took a back-heeled shot that missed inches from the post.

Charleston made the most of its limited opportunities, with both shots on goal coming in back-to-back minutes. After goalkeeper John McCarthy made a stretching save to push a shot over the crossbar, the ensuing corner proved costly. With a strong service from defender Jarad van Schaik, fellow defender Skylar Thomas found space at

the back post and headed it home.S

Steel FC wasted little time fighting back from the deficit, scoring on its own set piece. With seconds remaining in first-half stoppage time, Anthony Fontana whipped in a corner kick that forced a goal line save by Odisnel Cooper. Burke fought for the rebound and punched it home just before the referee blew his whistle for the half.

Head coach Brendan Burke

Assistant coach Stephen Hogan

Burke is in his third season as head coach of Bethlehem Steel FC, coaching the squad to an 20-29-20 regular season record during the club’s first two seasons in the modern era. He was formally introduced as the club’s first head coach on Oct. 29, 2015 and recently signed an extension to remain with Steel FC for the foreseeable future. During his two seasons with Bethlehem Steel FC, he has navigated 68 different starting XI combinations in 70 career matches while guiding three players to first team contracts with Derrick Jones in 2016 and the duo of Cory Burke and Matt Real after the 2017 season. Overall, Burke had coached 64 players including 25 players with ties to the first team and 12 from the Philadelphia Union Academy the past two seasons. Prior to joining Steel FC, Burke served as an assistant coach for the Philadelphia Union from 2011 through 2014. He was heavily involved in all levels of the U.S. Soccer pyramid, including serving as head coach of the Union’s PDL affiliate Reading United from 2008-13 where he had a record of 71-18-19. During his time with Reading, Burke coached 49 players that signed professional contracts including Ray Gaddis, C.J. Sapong, John McCarthy and Matt Hedges. Burke served as associate head coach at Northeastern University in 2015.

Hogan, who formerly served as the head coach of the Philadelphia Union’s PDL affiliate, Reading United, is in his third season with Steel FC. Hogan guided the PDL squad to a 22-5-1 record in his two seasons with Reading United. The club went 10-3-1 and won the Mid-Atlantic Division title along with an appearance in the Eastern Conference finals. Hogan followed up with an even stronger 12-2-0 record in 2017, tying for the most wins in the 72-team league. During the season that saw the club reach the postseason for the ninth time in 10 seasons, Hogan’s squad conceded an Eastern Conference-low 10 goals. As a Reading player under Brendan Burke, he made 52 appearances, second most in club history, while playing from 2007-10. He helped lead the team to the 2009 PDL Regular Season Title and the PDL National Semifinals in 2008 and 2010. A native of Dublin, Ireland, Hogan spent two seasons as head coach at the College of Saint Rose’s men’s soccer program.
