Just by hearing his name, you may suspect—Slug Hefner is a character. His birth certificate

reads Joe Hefner III, but he has been called Slug since he was

born.

Hefner is something of a motiva-tional speaker to his employees,

and those who manage to live up to his high standards of conduct-

ing business, seem to be rewarded for their loyalty by moving up the success ladder. His work-

ers unanimously describe him as being “anal.” For instance, he

insists that his delivery trucks are cleaned every single day so that the chrome rims shine.

On a personal note, Hefner is a father of three daughters. Honest to the point in which he may reveal too much

information, the businessman shared with us how he had a contract with his wife, Paula, who happens to be a court

reporter. If Hefner agreed to undergo a reverse-vasecto-my, she would allow him to name their children.

With that, Hefner gave 20-year-old Quaker her name since she was born on the date Ibem Browning predicted

the New Madrid fault line would awaken. Fathom, 17, was named after the measurement of water depth since

she was born during the Mississippi River Flood of 1993. When his third daughter came along, he determined he couldn’t top his previous two names, thus she would be

called Topper. Well, she was born two weeks prematurely while Hefner was at a marina, so Paula made her full name Marina Topper. Nina, as she goes by, is now 16.

In getting to know Hefner, beyond the larger than life persona he portrays, the man is anything but a slug. It took perseverance getting to where he is today. In this month’s cover story, in light of his 20th anniversary of

owning Hefner Furniture and Appliance, Hefner shares how he got his start.

On April Fools Day 1991, the joke was not on Slug Hefner for the first time in a year and a half.

He was finally able to close the business transaction with Ronnie Underburg, owner of a Memphis based furniture store chain, assuming control over Joe Hefner Furniture Center.

“When I was trying to buy the store from Ronnie, I was recently remarried, had little money and was not financially qualified to buy the store,” Slug admitted. “I got a lot of ‘no’ and some ‘hell no’ answers, so obviously it was a very demeaning and humiliating ex-perience.”

While Hefner’s ties to the furniture business go back three generations, he is ac-tually a self-made man. “I think it’s natural for people just to assume that I somehow got the store from my dad,” Slug explained.

BLOODLINE OF ENTREPRENUERS

In 1925, Slug’s grandfather J.A. Hefner founded Hefner Mercantile in Qulin. After J.A. Hefner died, his son Joe Hefner assumed own-ership and expanded the business to include groceries, hardware, furniture, appliances, a café and a butcher shop.

“I remember helping count dur-ing the annual inventory before I was 10, got on the payroll when I was 13 butchering chickens and weighing eggs,” Slug said. “At 16, I worked in the warehouse uncrat-ing and delivering furniture. I guess

I’ve worked all my life, and still do!”

In the 1960s, Joe Hefner sold the one-stop shop to Bill Piatt and Dave Davidson, who operated the business into the next decade.

Slug went on to attend Arkansas State Uni-versity, where he maintained what he referred to as a “lackluster” 1.85 grade point average, subjecting himself to the draft for the Vietnam War. He joined the United States Air Force in lieu of the Army, completed technical train-ing at Chanute Air Force Base in Rantoul, Ill., and was stationed in England as an aircraft electrician.

After serving four years in the military, Slug returned to Poplar Bluff and went to work selling cars for Bill Childress at the former Childress Chevrolet, where Andy Lundsford was his manager.

ent location on North Westwood Boulevard. Slug joined the family operation in 1972.

“My dad worked me like a galley slave,” Slug exclaimed with a chuckle, noting that he worked from 8 a.m.-8 p.m. six days a week for several years. “It made me tough and taught me to deal with whatever is thrown my way. I actually had to quit to get a vacation.”

Slug did all the adver-tising and merchandis-ing. He said he stuck it out, thinking he would some day get an opportunity to buy the store.

Much to Slug’s dismay, Joe Hefner sold the

store to Furniture Center. A new manager was brought in and Slug was hired as a sales person.

“I wasn’t sure I even had a job until their first day of ownership,” Slug said. “This whole transaction was kept from me. I ac-tually found out about the pending sale on the street.”

Slug was soon promoted to manage the store and was responsible for imple-menting a new control system. Under his leader-ship, he was able to grow the operation to the com-pany’s biggest volume producer, he said.

“The first thing I learned was the Hefners didn’t know all there is to know about the furniture busi-

ness,” Slug said. “The second thing I learned was that Furniture Center didn’t know all there is to know continued on page 21

“Being a Man (or Woman) of Letters” When one talks of personal style, one is typically thinking about what style of clothing, shoes, jewelry, hair, etc. a person implements in his or her daily wardrobe. But I think personal style is much more. It’s really about the way you see yourself, others, and the world. And it’s about the way you communicate with people around you, especially the people in your life who you really value. Unfortunately, one of those ways of communicating seems to be a lost art… the art of writing a personal letter. I think we’ve become overly dependent on technology to communicate. We phone… we text… we use email, because it’s all fast, easy and convenient. And 99 percent of the time, that is fine. But… those are not really the ways to communicate with someone on a really personal level. I’ve had a couple of occasions recently to think about the value of the handwritten letter. A few weeks ago, my mom was very sick. Once she regained some energy, the first thing she did was go about some houseclean-ing. She decided that if something happened to her, she did not want anyone coming into a messy house. Of course, this is the same logic she always used to avoid having a cleaning lady come in every week to help her with housework. She didn’t want a cleaning lady to find a messy house… so she would have to clean it before the cleaner got there… somewhat nullifying the need for a cleaning lady. But… during this recent attack on her bedroom closet, she found a letter from my dad. As hard as it is for me to believe, my dad died over 20 years ago. This particular letter was written to his parents… my grandparents… the week I was born. The letter had found its way back to my mom when both of dad’s parents had died. I carefully took the letter out of its original envelope and read it.I was astounded particularly by two things. First… my dad had beau-tiful penmanship. That is really unusual for men. And I had forgotten how beautifully he could express himself physically through writing.The second thing that astounded me was how excited he was at my arrival. He wrote of how amazingly small I was… only 4 pounds and 13 ounces… but how loudly I could cry. And he wrote of how instantly he fell in love. My dad, being typical of most 1950’s men, was not a real emotion-al sort. So that kind of peek into his emotions literally brought tears to my eyes. My dad loved me and was unabashedly proud of me from the very beginning of my life! I will treasure that letter forever. Then on Mother’s Day, both of my daughters gave me Mother’s Day cards. Both of them were handmade, and beautiful. But their real beauty was in the words hand-inscribed about how much they value me as their mother and their role model. It’s moments like those when mothers realize the importance of their number one job: to bring great people into the world who will make it a better place. Now… back to my topic… letter writing. It occurred to me that neither Dad’s letter, nor the girls’ cards, would have carried quite the same weight if they had simply emailed or texted me with the message. It would have been nice and appreciated… but I doubt that I would have printed the email messages out and put them in my special keepsake drawer. So… it has dawned on me that letter writing is indeed a very real statement of personal style. I need to do it more myself.Whether you’re a son or a daughter, a mom or a dad, or just a good friend… get out and buy yourself some very nice stationery.Write that letter. Pour your heart into it. If you think you’ll look like a sentimental sap… GOOD… that means you’re doing it right. If you have someone who is the love of your life, write a love letter and tell them how much they mean to you. Don’t worry if you write more like Fred Flintstone than Shakespeare… it really is the thought that counts… and the effort made. Mail it. Or hand-deliver it. Seal it with a kiss.

This is personal style at its most personal.

about the furniture business.”

In 1990, Underburg decided to sell his chain to Heileg Myers, but of-fered Slug and one other man-ager in Alabama the option to pur-chase at what they agreed was a fair price. This is when a 16-month ordeal to seek financing ensued.

After being turned down by area banks, plus the U.S. Small Business Association, Slug approached Joe Hef-ner for a loan but was shot down.

“I was devastated and actually gave up,” Slug said. “I humbly called Ronnie Underburg

and tried to throw in the towel and admit I couldn’t make the deal work.”

Underburg agreed to carry a sizeable second note on the business and inventory. While it was a bankable transaction, Slug had to have a certain amount of “skin in the game,” he said.

He sold everything he had equity in and downsized vehicles, acquiring a 10-year-old pickup truck and putting his wife in a wrecked and rebuilt Toyota Tercel with no power.

“One day I went to work in my Suburban

and came out to discover that it was gone, so I called Slug to tell him that it was stolen,” Paula recalled, able to laugh in retrospect. “He was like, ‘Oh yeah, by the way, I sold your Suburban but I got you a car. They will deliver it as soon as it’s repaired.’”

Twenty years ago, Slug closed on the deal, changing the name to Hefner Furniture and Appliance. In doing so, he recalled he was so “strapped,” his longtime friend, Greg McCauley of Greg’s Auto Sales, lent him a vehicle to travel to High Point Market in North Carolina so he could meet with furni-ture vendors.

“Just like every busi-nessman trying to buy their first business, he had a struggle,” McCauley said. “I knew he’d make it once he got in the door.”

Over the past two decades, Hefner Furniture and Appliance quadrupled in size and vol-ume, according to the owner. The business has been featured on the cover of the trade magazine, Furniture Today.

“We have a saying,” explained Charlotte Har-ris, longtime employee. “There’s a right way,

Since Beijing opened its doors it has been quite a hot spot. The place was packed from lunch through late night dinners, although it is small the packed dining area and the many people grabbing takeout keep the place hop-ping. Beijing is located on Business 60 beside Sacred Heart Church and across from Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center’s South Campus. It is the bright yellow building, and really hard to miss. We split three things. The portions are super-sized, so keep that in mind. We had the Chinese chicken salad, General Tso’s chicken, and beef and broccoli. It comes on a simple white plate and shaped in a huge mound on top. Lots to share. We also had an appetizer of crab rangoon. Big portions, heavy sauces, and just the right amount of rice. All three of our entrees were exceptional, and we look forward to com-

ing back and sampling more of the menu. Perhaps the best thing about Beijing is the family atmosphere you can find there in the afternoons and evenings. The children are all around, and it seems everyone who works there is family. Makes for a very warm place to eat. Rest assured, after trying Beijing’s, you will definitely include them on your list of regular restau-rants to visit in the 573.
