In this week’s parsha, we are instructed in the mitzvah of to “Love your neighbor as yourself.” This ”ואהבת לרעך כמוך“dictum is so central to our lives that Rebbi Akiva referred to it is a כלל גדול בתורה, a great commandment given to us by the Torah.Greek philosopher Aristotle once posed the following question: When one person gives something of his own to another, why does the giver feels closer to receiver than the receiver does to the giver?Rav Dessler explains the phenomenon this way: Every person is born with innate love of himself and all his possessions. Therefore, when we give something of ourselves to another person, we develop positive feelings towards him, because that person is in possession of something that is ours.With this we can explain the passuk “ואהבת לרעך כמוך,” Love your neighbor as yourself. How is it possible to love someone else with the same powerful feelings of love that we reserve only for ourselves? According to Rav Dessler’s explanation, we can achieve this by doing chesed and giving to others. This will eventually bring us to love our neighbor as ourselves, because this new love stems from the fact that we have given something of “ours” to that person. In essence, the love we feel for the recipients of our kindness stems from the love we have for ourselves.

The right kind of oil is very important for a healthy lifestyle. The cells in our bodies are all coated with a membrane made out of fats. The makeup of this cell membrane is dependent on the type of fats you consume. If it’s a healthy fat then it’s a healthy cell and vice versa.Vegetable oilsVegetableoils,includingcornandsunfloweroils are omega 6 oils. Everyone knows the importance of omega 3, which is found mostly infishoil,butwhatisnotaswellknownisthat omega 6 is what counterbalances omega 3. The more omega 6 you consume, the more omega 3 you would need to get its health benefits. Vegetable oils are mostly omega6, and consuming these oils creates a very harmful imbalance in our body. The high omega 6 to omega 3 ratio in the American diet today is part of the reason why society is dealing with so many health issues. It creates inflammation throughout the bodyand, according to some experts, is the cause of many of today’s diseases. It follows that these kinds of oils should definitely beavoided.CanolaCanolaisdefinitelyabetteroptionthanothervegetable oils because it is mainly omega 9 oil, which does not affect the omega 6 to omega 3 ratio. virgin olive oil, and it is also a very expensive oil. When we fry in oil, the oils can get damaged, creating harmful free radicals. These oils are saturated and make it much more resistant to the effects of high heat. Coconut oil has also been shown to help with weight loss and is a potent anti-bacteria agent. Coconut oil however, tends to be pricey, so for every day cooking, using palm oil might be more sensible.

A yid, a staunch Torah supporter, was diagnosed with a terrible infection in one of his kidneys. The usual procedure for this is to remove the infected kidney, leaving only the healthy functioning kidney. But in the hospital he was informed that he already had only one kidney, thus rendering the standard procedure impossible. The only cure for him is an extremely complicated and difficult transplant.
