Anthem Let all mortal flesh keep silence Edward C. Bairstow (1874–1946)

Let all mortal flesh keep silence And stand with fear and trembling, And lift itself above all earthly thought. For the King of kings and Lord of lords, Christ our God, Cometh forth to be our oblation And to be giv’n for Food to the faithful.

Before him come the choirs of angels With ev’ry principality and pow’r; The Cherubim with many eyes, and winged Seraphim, Who veil their faces as they shout exultingly the hymn: Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia! from the Liturgy of St. James

Lesson 1 Peter 2:19–25

Lector: A lesson from the first epistle of Peter, chapter 2, verses 19-25:

For it is a credit to you if, being aware of God, you endure pain while suffering unjustly. If you endure when you are beaten for doing wrong, what credit is that? But if you endure when you do right and suffer for it, you have God's approval. For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you should follow in his steps. "He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth." When he was abused, he did not return abuse; when he suffered, he did not threaten; but he entrusted himself to the one who judges justly. He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross, so that, free from sins, we might live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed. For you were going astray like sheep, but now you have returned to the shepherd and guardian of your souls.

Lector: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

Psalm 23 (sung by the choir) Bobby McFerrin (b. 1950) (“dedicated to my mother”)

The Lord is my Shepherd, I have all I need, She makes me lie down in green meadows, beside the still waters, She will lead. She restores my soul, She rights my wrongs, She leads me in a path of good things, and fills my heart with songs. Even though I walk through a dark and dreary land, there is nothing that can shake me, She has said, She won’t forsake me, I’m in Her hand. She sets a table before me in the presence of my foes, She anoints my head with oil, and my cup overflows. Surely, surely goodness and kindness will follow me all the days of my life, And I will live in Her house forever, forever and ever.

Glory be to our Mother, and Daughter, and to the Holy of Holies, As it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Text adapted by the composer

All stand for the reading of the Gospel Lesson.

X Gospel Lesson John 10:1–10

Lector: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St. John, chapter 10, verses 1–10: People: Glory to you, O Lord.

Very truly, I tell you, anyone who does not enter the sheepfold by the gate but climbs in by another way is a thief and a bandit. The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep hear his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought out all his own, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him because they know his voice. They will not follow a stranger, but they will run from him because they do not know the voice of strangers." Jesus used this figure of speech with them, but they did not understand what he was saying to them. So again Jesus said to them, "Very truly, I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep. All who came before me are thieves and bandits; but the sheep did not listen to them. I am the gate. Whoever enters by me will be saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly."

Lector: The Gospel of the Lord. People: Praise to you, Lord Christ.

The sermon was recorded specifically for today, May 3, 2020. The remainder of the service is being re-broadcast from previous services.

At the Offertory Greater love hath no man John Ireland (1879–1962)

Many waters cannot quench Love, neither can the floods drown it. (Song of Solomon 8:7) Love is strong as death. (Song of Solomon 8:6) Greater Love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. (John 15:13)

Who His own Self bare our sins in His own Body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness. (1 Peter 2:24) Ye are washed, ye are sanctified, ye are justified, in the Name of the Lord Jesus; (1 Corinthians 6:11) Ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, That ye should shew forth the praises of Him who hath called you our of darkness into His marvelous light. (1 Peter 2:9)

I beseech you, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. (Romans 12:1)

THE SACRAMENT OF HOLY COMMUNION

X The Great Thanksgiving

Celebrant: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Celebrant: Lift up your hearts. People: We lift them up to the Lord. Celebrant: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People: It is right to give our thanks and praise.

Celebrant: It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Almighty God, creator of heaven and earth. You formed us in your image and breathed into us the breath of life. When we turned away, and our love failed, your love remained steadfast. You delivered us from captivity, made covenant to be our sovereign God, brought us to a land flowing with milk and honey, and set before us the way of life.

Celebrant: And so, with your people on earth and all the company of heaven we praise your name and join their unending hymn:

X Sanctus and Benedictus (sung by all) Julian J. Wachner (b. 1969)

X Words of Institution

Celebrant: Holy are you, and blessed is your Son Jesus Christ. By the baptism of his suffering, death, and resurrection you gave birth to your Church, delivered us from slavery to sin and death, and made with us a new covenant by water and the Spirit. By your great mercy we have been born anew to a living hope through the resurrection of your Son from the dead and to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading.

Once we were no people, but now we are your people, declaring your wonderful deeds in Christ, who called us out of darkness into his marvelous light. When the Lord Jesus ascended, he promised to be with us always, in the power of your Word and Holy Spirit.

On the night in which he gave himself up for us, he took bread, gave thanks to you, broke the bread, gave it to his disciples, and said: “Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”

When the supper was over he took the cup, gave thanks to you, gave it to his disciples, and said: “Drink from this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.”

Page 8: May 3 2020 Bulletin - Boston UniversityMay 05, 2020  · Prelude Voluntary No. 2 in G major William Walond(c. 1725–1770) Voluntary in F major John Bennett (c. 1735–1784) Call to

Celebrant: On the day you raised him from the dead he was recognized by his disciples in the breaking of the bread, and in the power of your Holy Spirit your Church has continued in the breaking of the bread and the sharing of the cup.

And so, in remembrance of these your mighty acts in Jesus Christ, we offer ourselves in praise and thanksgiving as a holy and living sacrifice, in union with Christ’s offering for us, as we proclaim the mystery of faith.

(Sung by all):

Celebrant: Pour out your Holy Spirit on us gathered here, and on these gifts of bread and wine. Make them be for us the body and blood of Christ, that we may be for the world the body of Christ, redeemed by his blood.

By your Spirit make us one with Christ, one with each other, and one in ministry to all the world, until Christ comes in final victory, and we feast at his heavenly banquet.

Through your Son Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit in your holy Church, all honor and glory is yours, Almighty God, now and for ever.

All: Amen.

X The Lord’s Prayer

Celebrant: And now, with the confidence of children of God, let us pray:

All: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

X Agnus Dei (sung by the choir)

Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, grant us your peace.
