Promotion and Graduation The class of 2018 was promoted to high school on Friday, May 23 at 6:00 pm. OBA teacher Jay Mendenhall presented a challenge to the thirty-eight 8th graders. Mr. Caldwell presented seven students with Highest Academic Honors and eleven students with High Academic Honors. Mr. Paul Dunbar was honored as the Middle School Teacher of the Year by Preston Atwood, 2014-15 STUCO president.!

At the high school graduation, thirty-nine students entered the auditorium, greeted by nearly 900 family members and friends. The nine valedictorians each spoke as a part of the program. Claire Brainard and Hyunji Do welcomed the guests. !!Chesney Brakhage shared about the class verse, Psalm 23:4,

“Little did we know in seventh grade when we chose this verse how it would play out in our years here at OBA,” Chesney said. “We have gone through may valleys. Even though we have walked through the valley of the death of a loved on, even through we’ve walked through the valley of divorce, the valley of depression, of isolation, of hurt, of sickness - and even though we are walking through the valley of cancer, we have nothing to fear.” !!Mr. Caldwell presented the nine valedictorians with awards, as well as Andrea Messenger, salutatorian. These awards are standard based, rather than a competition. Mr. Boyd recognized the All State athletes as listed above as well as Brendon Arnold, Claire Brainard and Hyunji Do as All State musicians. Hannah Jackson, 2013-14 STUCO president, honored Mr. Clellie Richards as High School Teacher of the Year. Katie Irwin, Kevin Kim and Kevin Suderman presented the Class Reading.!!Hannah Jackson spoke about the school mission of equipping students to engage the world. From her experience serving in Niger, Africa she grew to understand that “there are many ways to engage the world, but the most important connection is heart to heart.” For Hannah in Niger, “there was nothing left to do but laugh and smile .. and even though words failed us, we related, we worked together, we connected.” !!Andrew Johnson spoke eloquently to his class, and those in attendance, reminding them that “God is good and you can trust Him.” The Christian character awards were chosen by the senior class and faculty and presented to Brendon Arnold - Daniel Award for leadership, Chesney Brakhage - Solomon Award for wisdom, Addi Shamburg - Job Award for perseverance, and Brooklyn Wiens - Timothy Award for a servant’s heart. !!Class diplomas were awarded by Brian Atwood, president of the OBA Board. Brendon Arnold led those gathered in the OBA Alma Mater, including a doxological verse that he penned. Students exited to the Centennial Gym for a receiving line to the cheers and congratulations of all in attendance. !!OBA 2014 graduates are pictured on the following pages along with their plans for next year. We pray God’s direction, grace and blessing over each of their lives.
