CHURCH RENOVATION 2019—WEEK #2—FIRST MASSES IN PARISH HALL

Dear parishioners of St. Thomas Becket Parish,

Thank you so much for the amazing dona!on of chairs and kneelers to us here at Mission of Our Lady of the Angels. We are very grateful. We are in process of opening a perpetual Adora!on chapel. We were praying for a dona!on of chairs and kneelers. This was incredibly providen!al and is perfect for our space!!

The Mission of Our Lady of the Angels is in west Humboldt Park in Chicago. We work with the poor there. Our perpetual Adora!on chapel will be used to pray for our neighborhood- which is torn by violence and poverty. We will also use the chapel to help bring young people back to the Church as we will host many young adult retreats in this loca!on.

Know that we will also pray for you and your inten!ons in the new chapel.

REFLECTION ON SUNDAY’S GOSPEL Today we celebrate the Sixth Sunday of Easter. However, today’s Gospel passage comes from a sec!on of John’s Gospel known as the ‘farewell discourse’ delivered by Jesus at the Last Supper, just prior to his arrest. In that discourse Jesus, an!cipa!ng his imminent departure, told his disciples not to be troubled or fearful a-er He is gone because they will not be le- alone. He promised that there would be wonderful gi-s bestowed upon them. Holy Spirit, named as

Advocate, will be sent to them as a means of perpetual help in guiding their lives and reminding them all that Jesus taught. Also, the wonderful gi- of peace, that is, Jesus’ and not the world’s peace will be available for their embracing.

These gi-s are bestowed not only to the listeners a/ending the Last Supper, but also are given to us today - even in this very minute. Are we, who are supposedly in love with Jesus, listening to the whispers of the Holy Spirit who indwells in us, who brings us Jesus ‘peace?

In the midst of our fast paced world it is easy to neglect our !me with God and when we finally find a few minutes to pray we are tempted to do all the talking. However, the gi- of peace, along with all the other gi-s of the Spirit are just that, gi-s. We cannot earn them or obtain them.

This week I would like to invite you to try a new kind of prayer, perhaps medita!ng in front of an icon, or medita!ng on a passage of Scripture. Try to refrain from too much talking in your prayer, but instead sit silently for 5-10 minutes and simply be at peace. Let go of your thoughts and your worries and try instead si8ng silently with Christ with an a8tude of openness.

ZAMYŚLENIE NAD NIEDZIELNĄ EWANGELIĄ

Dzisiaj celebrujemy szóstą niedzielę wielkanocną, jednak dzisiejszy fragment Ewangelii św. Jana pochodzi z mowy pożegnalnej wygłoszonej przez Jezusa podczas Ostatniej Wieczerzy, tuż przed Jego aresztowaniem. Jezus, przewidując swe rychłe odejście, mówi swoim uczniom, aby po Jego odejściu nie popadali w rozpacz i nie dali się zniewolić strachowi. Obiecuje im, że nie zostaną pozostawieni sami sobie. Wręcz przeciwnie, ci, którzy Go kochają będą zachowywać Jego słowa i przez to otrzymają wspaniałe dary. Duch Święty, nazwany Orędownikiem, zostanie im wysłany jako środek nieustannej pomocy w kierowaniu ich życiem i w przypominaniu im wszystkiego, czego nauczał Jezus. Także, bezcenny i do niczego nie dający się porównać dar - nie światowego - lecz Jezusowego pokoju, będzie im dostępny.

Dary, o których mówi Jezus nie zostały ofiarowane tylko słuchaczom obecnym w Wieczerniku. Jezus obiecuje je również nam – dzisiaj – a nawet w tej chwili. A więc, czy my - którzy deklarujemy miłość do Jezusa – wsłuchujemy się w głos, danego nam i szeptającego do nas Ducha Świętego?

W naszym szybko zmieniającym się i często zagonionym życiu bardzo łatwo jest zaniedbać modlitwę i czas przebywania z Bogiem, a gdy jakoś znajdziemy kilka minut na modlitwę, to często ulegamy pokusie mówienia Bogu co chcielibyśmy aby nam uczynił. Jednak dar pokoju, tak samo jak pozostałe dary Ducha, jest właśnie niczym innym jak właśnie darem. Oznacza to, że nie możemy go wysłużyć czy też zdobyć własnym wysiłkiem. Dar jest nam ofiarowany, a my możemy go przyjąć lub nie.

W tym tygodniu chciałabym zaproponować wypróbowanie nowego rodzaju modlitwy. Modlitwy wyciszenia - niech ta modlitwa będzie siedzeniem w milczeniu przed ulubioną ikoną lub medytacją nad wybranym fragmentem Pisma Świętego. Spróbujmy powstrzymać się od mówienia. Przez 5-10 minut postarajmy się odrzucić zmartwienia i bombardujące nas nieustannie myśli. Pozostańmy w tym milczeniu przez jakiś czas przyjmując postawę otwartości wobec przebywającego w nas Ducha Św.

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

Blessings to you in this joyful season of Easter. In keeping with my pledge to update you on the Church’s efforts regarding safeguarding of children, I want to share an important step taken by Pope Francis. This past Friday he published an executive order mandating that all bishops implement a new universal law requiring all dioceses and religious orders to report abuse of minors and vulnerable adults. The new law provides a process for investigating abuse by any member of the hierarchy, including cardinals, bishops and priests as well as religious men and women. There is also a process for investigating the mishandling of such cases by bishops. Now, all bishops’ conferences and religious congregations in every country around the world will have to meet more rigorous standards.

This unprecedented development comes less than three months after the Holy Father’s meeting in Rome with all religious superiors and presidents of bishops’ conferences from around the world. On that occasion the Pope promised concrete action. The announcement today, along with the norms he published earlier for the Vatican City State, demonstrate his resolve to put an end to cover ups and take decisive action to rid the Church of the scourge of abuse of minors. For your convenience, you can read the full statement the archdiocese released on the law. I invite you to share this information with your family members and friends. As I noted in that statement: "While this new law validates many of the procedures already in place in the Archdiocese of Chicago and in the United States, it provides a framework for the bishops in this country to adopt measures at our June meeting that will both implement the Pope’s executive order and address the issue of holding everyone in the Church accountable."

As our auxiliary bishops and I prepare to attend that meeting in a few weeks, I pledge to you once again that I will do my best to see that our response in June, as well as our ongoing efforts in this regard, are marked by responsibility, accountability and transparency.

Ques%on: Why is the Easter season so long?

And should we be doing something special for it?

Answer: You've probably no!ced the priest

con!nuing to where white vestments at the Sunday liturgy.

While we celebrated Christ's resurrec!on several weeks ago, the

Easter season extends fi-y days - just over seven weeks - from Easter

Sunday to Pentecost. For most of that !me - about six weeks - Jesus is s!ll with the disciples, teaching and

encouraging them. The Easter season isn't just a celebra!on of when Jesus is with us. At the Last

Supper, Jesus promised to send an "advocate" or "counselor" when he le-. At the Ascension, he directs the

disciples to await "power from on high" - the coming of the Holy

Spirit. The Ascension completes the paschal mystery, beginning with Jesus' suffering and death and con!nuing in the resurrec!on.

But the Holy Spirit ushers in a new era for the Church.
