Dear Friends,

Below is a letter on a son of the parish, Paul Wilken, now a newly ordained priest who will be in Minnesota. We congratulate him and his family for his new role as a former IHM alum who has decided to enter the priesthood at the ripe young age of 55!

Paul grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio within a Catholic family of eight children separated by 14 years, he is #7 of 8. Paul was baptized, received 1st Eucharist and was confirmed at IHM. He has an inclination for geography and art. In his youth he played baseball, in high school he ran track, played in the band and was on city youth/adult soccer teams for years. His has earned an associate’s degree in commercial art before returning to college for night classes to earn his bachelor’s degree in graphic design.

Paul lived in the British Virgin Islands for a year then on rural Vashon Island near Seattle, WA for 18 years which is accessible only by ferry boat. Before the Salvatorians, Paul was the owner and graphic designer of a sole proprietorship full-service marketing and design firm – Gargoyle Design – for 17 years. His hobbies include: photography, motorcycle touring, woodworking, gardening, fossil hunting, genealogy and a preference for old time radio programs, movies and TV shows.

Paul rediscovered his faith when Fr. Richard R. Roach SCJ, retired Marquette Theology scholar, gave “homi-lectures” at mass in the small rural Vashon Island, WA church. The spark towards a religious life calling came one night while he was researching companies in which to submit his resume (edited version, unedited version ask Paul). After four years of varied discernment the Salvatorians were appealing because of their international presence and as Paul said, “With my diversity of being a jack-of-all-trades” I’m drawn to the Salvatorian words ‘by all ways and means.’ ”

Paul joined the Salvatorians in 2013 to discern his calling as a Priests or as a Brother. Called to priesthood, the Salvatorian formation process would take seven years from Candidature, Novitiate, First/Temporary profession, Final profession, Transitional Diaconate through Ordination to the Priesthood. Paul has had diverse ministries both locally as well as three summers in Vietnam and a year (2017) in Manila, Philippines studying Theology with other Salvatorian seminarians. He has one more semester of seminary after Ordination and feels called to be a Salvatorian Apostle and to minister in Vietnam or Asia.

Let us all pray for Father Paul as he transitions to his new role as priest in Minnesota.

God Bless,

Fr. Tom

Baptism Prep June 13Parents desiring to have their child baptized, please call the Formation Office at 388-4093. The next Baptism Preparation Class is Thursday, June 13, 7:30 p.m. in the church. Fair Trade Products, On Sale in the Fatima RoomFair Trade coffee, cocoa, chocolate bars and olive oil will be on sale in the Fatima room this weekend after all Masses.

Buying Fair Trade at IHM is good for us because you get a premium product at a very reasonable price; we sell almost at wholesale and mark up or down only to make prices a multiple of fifty cents for easy change making.

Fair Trade is good for farmers because Fair Trade and organic premiums allow them to invest in education, health programs and social services for their communities.

Fair Trade is good for everyone because when farmers make a living wage they can afford to stay on their land.

Please consider buying Fair Trade coffee, cocoa and chocolate and help plant the seeds of hope while enjoying a delicious product.

Knights of Columbus Flag Retirement Ceremony June 15, 2019Please mark your calendars for Saturday June 15, as the Knights of Columbus Archbishop Leibold Assembly will be performing a Flag Retirement Ceremony in the courtyard outside the Church’s main entrance immediately following the 5:00 PM Mass. This short ceremony exemplifies Patriotism, one of the founding principles of the Knights of Columbus (the others being Charity, Unity and Fraternity) and it ceremoniously displays the proper disposition of U.S. Flags no longer serviceable. It will feature the Color Corps members, with several outfitted in their traditional regalia.

This will be good opportunity to witness one of the many important roles the Knights of Columbus performs for the Church and our community.

We are praying for nice weather, and we hope that you can attend. If you have a flag that needs to be retired, please drop it off at the parish office.

Food from the Heart Collection Summertime is hard on families with children who are struggling with food insufficiency. Children are out of school and no longer receive free lunch or breakfast. Our collection also receives less as parishioners are on vacation or busy with summer activities. Please remember the Food from the Heart over the summer. The kids will thank you. Donations can also be brought to the SEM Pantry located in the basement of the IHM “old office” building on our campus. Hours are Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday 10 am-2pm and Tuesday evening 5:30-7 pm. Many thanks to our volunteers who deliver the collection on the Monday morning after the weekend bins are filled. Help is always needed, just come around 9:15 am. No glass items due to breakage. Volunteers are always welcome at the pantry. Call Charlie Gentry at 513-300-8173 if you or a teen has time to help. Monetary donations are even more helpful and checks can be sent to SEM Pantry 1260 Columbus Ave. Cincinnati OH 45255. Fresh produce from home gardens can also be brought directly to the pantry. Please do not bring on the collection Sunday as it might spoil.

Parish BreakfastThe Knights of Columbus monthly breakfast will be held this Sunday, June 16, following 7:30 & 9:30 a.m. Masses. We have buffet favorites including biscuits & gravy, pancakes, home-made potatoes, ham, sausage, scrambled eggs, fruit, bakery items, along with orange juice and coffee. We also feature made-to-order omelets and goetta. Adults are $8, children 3–12 are $4, and all children under the age of three are FREE! All new parishioners are also invited to be our guest FREE OF CHARGE. Bring the entire family for a delicious breakfast prepared by the Knights of Columbus. Members of the welcoming committee, members of the IHM community will be available to welcome you and to answer any questions you may have.

Great Parent Resource! We know how challenging it is to be a parent today. But you are not alone! The parish would like to help with LoveEd to teach the meaning of life along with the facts of life.

Parents of children grades 4-8 gather on Monday, June 24, 2019 from 6:30pm-8:45pm in Heritage Hall. This will help you talk to your young people about the beauty and the purpose of their sexuality. You will get knowledge and support to discuss what is often (but doesn’t have to be!) an uncomfortable topic!

In the 2nd session for children grades 4-6, Moms and their daughters (in Heritage), or Father’s and their sons (in Blessed Mother Room) watch video segments and follow discussion questions with their children on Wednesday, June 26 from 6:30pm-8:45pm to provide information on sexuality and the physical changes that will happen to their bodies during puberty.

In the 2nd session for children in grades 7-8, Moms and their daughters (in Heritage), or Father’s and their sons (in Blessed Mother Room) watch video segments and follow discussion questions with their children on Thursday, June 27 from 6:30pm-8:45pm to provide information on the physical development of a baby during pregnancy.

Each seminar has a Student Book for $26 and a Parent Guide resource which is also $26.

Please register by going to https://ihom.weshareonline.org/

Scholarships are available, and Parent Guides may be signed out to keep costs lower. Please don’t let costs prevent your family from benefitting from this great program. For more information, contact Donna Wenstrup in the Formation Office or at [email protected].

20th year anniversary of twinning with CCBN January 2020 marks the 20th anniversary of our IHM twinning with CCBN. Our Social Action Commission would like to thank everyone for your continued support of our twinning efforts. We have had many opportunities to build relationships. After 14 years, Project Education continues to promote education and hope for the CCBN students. 300 individuals from our area have visited CCBN and 17 from CCBN have visited us. All of those who participated in these shared experiences of solidarity are richer in understanding the universal body of Christ.

New Feast DayIn 2018, the Church added a new liturgical feast day! That doesn’t happen very often!

“The Memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church”, is now celebrated annually the day after Pentecost (June 10th this year)! Pope Francis approved this new feast day to show that Mary intercedes for the church, as a mother does for her children. Right after Pentecost is a fitting time to celebrate this feast, since during the original Pentecost, Mary “did what a mother would do – she prayed with and for her children in the upper room.”

Another image of Mary as Mother of the Church was revealed at Jesus’ crucifixion, when Jesus publicly announced to the disciple John, “behold your mother”. John symbolizes all of us, the church.

This is not a new Title for Mary. Pope Leo XIII’s encyclical on the rosary said that Mary at Pentecost was “in very truth, the mother of the church, the teacher and queen of the apostles.”

Mary’s presence with the early church at Pentecost and at the foot of the cross are examples of what it means to be a disciple.

This new feast helps us understand that the church is Marian. Mary is not just a nice addition. Mary is a guide for the church today.

Assisted Listening Devices are available for use during Mass. Please see an usher for assistance.
