“All power in heaven and on earth has been
given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations,
baptizing them in the name of the
Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.”
– Mt 28:18b-19
THE MEMORARE
Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known
that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought
thine intercession was left unaided.
Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins,
my mother; to thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful
and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions,
but in thy mercy hear and answer me.
Amen.

2 ST. BARNABAS CATHOLIC CHURCH
THE ASCENSION OF THE LORD
Dear Parishioners:
We went two months without a public Mass at St Barnabas. We were able to stay connected through the celebration of the Mass made available on our website. But it was not the same. We missed our communal worship of our
God through the great Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist. We missed receiving the Lord’s gentle forgiveness through the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation. We missed Holy Communion. We missed our church friends.
Thanks be to God that things have changed, hopefully never to return to what we have been through. At the time that I write this both our Governor and our Mayor have eased some of the restrictions that have been placed upon us. Because of this you now have more access to the sacraments than you have had for the last sixty days. Even with some of the limitations that remain this is a very good thing.
Confessions: Confessions have resumed according to a weekly schedule that will be posted on our parish website (www.stbindy.org). Confessions will be available outdoors, weather permitting. Father will be seated behind a screen that will provide both privacy and also a barrier to airborne contaminates. You may remain in your car during confession. If several members of the same household come for confession in the same vehicle they may take turns or they may approach the screen and confess while standing. I encourage you to make a good confession before you receive the Holy Eucharist for the first time after this long absence. We know that we are sinners and we always feel much better after receiving absolution.
Holy Mass: Sunday and Daily Mass has resumed according to the schedule posted on the website. We will continue to make the Mass available online for those unable to attend. For the time being every Mass will be offered outdoors, weather permitting. Please park behind the school entering the parking lot off of Fabyan Road. Please bring a lawn chair or blanket and an FM radio. Our of respect for our neighbors we will not amplify the sound. Rather, we will communicate the audio portion of the Mass through a low-power FM transmitter on FM 98.9 that should reach all of the parking lot and the green space near the football field. Radios may be purchased for less than $20. You might find an old radio or boom-box in the basement or garage. If you cannot locate a radio please come as your neighbor’s will probably be sufficient. Please maintain reverent silence while gathering. There will be a temptation to socialize before Mass; please take the time instead to prepare for Mass by joining in the Holy Rosary that will be prayed beginning 20 minutes before Mass. Additional instructions will be given as needed.
Other Devotions: There is a faithful group that has prayed the Holy Rosary online every evening in Hakha Chin at 6:00pm. Another group has prayed the Holy Rosary in English at 7:30pm. This will continue at least until the end of May. A Holy Hour of prayer before the exposed Blessed Sacrament is planned every Thursday evening. The Rosary Garden is open for personal prayer during the business day.
Other: The church is now available for funerals, weddings, memorial Masses, and baptisms. Attendance will be limited to twenty-five people to comply with the Mayor’s directive, at least until June 1. Social distancing is to be observed and masks are recommended.
The schedule and procedures are revised as needed. Please look to the website for the most current information. This is something new for all of us. Please know that we are working toward making our worship as smooth and reverent as possible.
Rationale:
Several things guide the decisions for this week:
1. Archbishop Thompson and the other Indiana bishops have dispensed the faithful from the Sunday obligation to attend Mass until August 15. No one is obliged to attend Mass. You may come to Mass or remain home as you see fit.
2. Mayor Hogsett’s permission for public gatherings has expanded from ten to twenty-five people through June 1. We really can’t gather in the church for Mass because of our large numbers.
3. The archdiocesan plan advises those who are 65 and over and those with high-risk health conditions not to enter a church building. This is the population that is most vulnerable to the coronavirus. We do not wish to exclude parishioners in this group from the sacraments, hence Mass and confessions being offered outdoors.
4. Cleaning and disinfecting the church building after every Mass is a challenge that we cannot meet at this present time. We are awaiting guidance from experts and we are studying our options.
5. I want to make sure that we are doing our very best to restore all parishioners to the sacramental life of the church. These reasonable precautions allow us to do just that.
6. Updates and revisions to the plan are to be expected for several weeks to come. Please be patient. Please be flexible.
Thank you for your ongoing support of our parish through your generous stewardship. I look forward to seeing you at church very soon.

THE ASCENSION OF THE LORD
Outreach MinistryJust as parishioners are good stewards of their treasure and share that with the parish, the parish shares a portion of your gifts with the wider community in support of the social mission of the broader church.
Therefore, in the name of the St. Barnabas family, the Outreach Ministry recently made a donation to Grace on Wings. Grace on Wings is a non-profit organization that provides cost-effective airplane transport for individuals needing to travel for medical treatment but too medically fragile to tolerate ground transportation. While we assist to financially support Grace on Wings in their mission to show Christ love through aviation, let us also remember to keep them in our prayers. Grace on Wings is the only charity air ambulance service in the country that is licensed as an air ambulance provider.
In addition to Grace on Wings, the Outreach Ministry has made a donation to St. Elizabeth/ Coleman Pregnancy & Adoption Services in the name of our parish family. These funds will be used to purchase car seats for babies and toddlers served by the agency. The need for new car seats has increased because the hospitals no longer provide them to new moms. Throughout its history, St. Elizabeth/ Coleman has changed the lives of countless women and families, providing support and hope when they needed it the most.
If you would like to be a part of Outreach Ministry here at St. Barnabas, as we seek to reach outside the parish boundaries to help those in need, please contact Connie Merkel at [email protected]
GREETING CARDS UPDATEI can only use birthday cards that would be suitable to send
to priests and seminarians along with the Serra Club birthday card. The cards have to be in good taste and can’t promise
enrollment in Masses, etc. NO OTHER CARDS CAN BE USED. Once the church reopens, they can be placed in the prison collection box. If you have a question, please leave a message at 317-881-7464 and someone will get back to
you as soon as possible. Thank you and may God keep you healthy. Ceil Woodard
PRAYER FRIENDSFYI -Hopefully we will be able to hold our annual Birthday
Dinner in the Fall. Until then please continue to pray for the lady and seminarian that you received in June. If you have lost her name or information, please call me at 317-881-7464 and we can look it up for you. Please stay healthy and may God
bless all of you. Ceil Woodard
