As Memorial Day approaches, American Legion Post 118 asks you to pause to remember and give thanks to our many heroes that never returned from the mountains of Afghanistan, the deserts of the Middle East, the jungles of Vietnam, the “Forgotten War” in Korea, the islands of the Pacific, the European continent, and many other lands. We cannot repay their sacrifice, but at the very least we can and must continue the legacy for which they died: the causes of democracy, decency, and patriotism. And while Memorial Day is intended to honor our fallen, we should not forget those who have pledged to make the same sacrifice if called upon—the young men and women still serving in Iraq, Afghanistan, the United States, and more than 130 foreign lands. Freedom is not a gift. It is an earned benefit that was paid for by the blood of our heroes. From the Revolutionary War to the War on Terrorism, the sacrifices and caliber of America’s fighting men and women have been nothing short of inspirational. Let us always remember them! Please join us for a Memorial Day ceremony at the Gardiner Cemetery on Tinker Hill on May 27th. The ceremony will begin at 0900.

Gardiner Original Music Showcase June 29 Gardiner: The Gardiner Original Music Showcase is slated for Saturday, June 29 at Gardiner, Montana’s Arch Park from 3-10pm. This live concert event celebrates the song writing, poetry, and original music of Ian Thomas, Jarret Kostrba, Lacy Nelson, Marley Ball, and Daniel Kosel. Montana Pig Roast plates from Gardiner’s Yellowstone Grill, beer, and wine are available for purchase. A portion of the event’s proceeds supports the North Yellowstone Education Foundation, a non-profit organization whose mission is to work with the community to build sustainable support and enhance innovative educational opportunities for students, teachers and community members in partnership with Gardiner Public Schools.

Tickets are available at Gardiner outlets: Yellowstone Grille, Wonderland Café, and the Town Station or online at https://www.tickettailor.com/events/thegardineroriginalmusicshowcase. General Admission is $28.50 (bring your own chair) and a VIP pass is $100, which includes a seat in a tented area, food and drink, autographed merchandise, and photographs with the artists. Remember to bring sunscreen.

Jarret Kostrba performs at 3pm. He is a Montana native whose music reflects the beautiful spirit of the mountains he calls home. Bringing uniqueness to every performance, Jarret’s artistry is within the Heavy-Folk, Soul, and Alt-Country genres. He has shared the stage with acts as varied as Incubus and Charlie Parr, and he has spent more than a decade performing for audiences across the west in several bands. Now as a solo artist Jarret has truly found his voice. Find him on YouTube.

Lacy Nelson performs at 4:30pm. She was raised in the red foothills of the Big Horn Mountains of Wyoming. Lacy has strong Folk and Country roots, delivering a fresh perspective with poetry and music that is shaped by the wild prairie, her family, and life on a cattle ranch as the daughter of 4th-generation ranchers near Ten Sleep, Wyoming. She placed in the 2018 Wyoming Singer-Songwriter competition and will perform original songs from her new album at multiple music festivals around Montana and Wyoming this summer.

Ian Thomas performs at 6:00pm. He draws on a variety of American roots influences, delivering a captivating, raw performance and distinctive sound from his original compositions on guitar, harmonica, and kazoo. Ian’s latest release is his Band of Drifters album, "Live in 2016," of 14 original songs deeply rooted in the classic country and American folk sounds. He has shared the stage with The Avett Brothers, Taj Mahal, John Hammond, Cyril Neville, Corey Harris, Sam Bush, Shovels & Rope, The Wood Brothers, Carolina Chocolate Drops, Reverend Goat, Dr. John, and more. Touring both here in the US and abroad, Ian has performed at festivals around the country, including Bonnaroo, Pickathon, Red Ants Pants, and Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion. Listen to his music at www.bandofdrifters.com.

CELLO + GUITAR is the final act, performing at 8:00pm. This stunning musical duo of Montana musicians consists of Daniel Kosel and Marley Ball. Marley has performed at Carnegie Hall, the Alberta Bair Theater, Tippet Rise, and the Billings Symphony, while Daniel has shared the stage with Neil McCoy, Sawyer Brown, Granger Smith, Colt Ford, Aaron Einhouse, Coco Montoya, and Cypress Spring. This superbly diverse combination of sounds—the beautiful and elegant cello combined with a “street musician’s” sultry guitar and vibrant vocals lifts the soul, brings joy to listeners, and shows that music is the universal language.

Kosel is a Seattle born, Montana-raised poet, guitarist, vocalist, recording artist, songwriter, and touring musician. He has creatively blended Country, Rock, and Blues into an original genre known as Crues Music. Daniel is a former marketing professional, business entrepreneur, and Class C high school basketball coach who began his full-time professional music career in 2016. Daniel has performed hundreds of concerts in venues throughout the western USA and Canada, plus he has recorded and released three original albums: Beartooth Stage, The Rain, and More Than Enough in the past two years. Listen to his music at www.danielkoselmusic.com.

Marley Ball interned with the Billings Symphony and was a principal cellist of the Skyview Philharmonic Orchestra, the Billings Youth Orchestra, and All-State Orchestra in 2017. She performed at All-State Orchestra all four years of high school, All-Northwest Orchestra in 2017, and Carnegie Hall as part of the Honors Performance Series. After graduating from Skyview High School in Billings, Montana in 2018, Marley is currently pursuing a degree in Cello Performance with hopes of teaching and performing professionally.

Warning: Elk with calves are extremely dangerous• Elk calving has begun! • Cow elk are much more aggressive towards people

during the calving season and may charge or kick.• Stay alert. Look around corners before exiting

buildings or walking around blind spots: cow elk may bed their calves near buildings and cars.

• Keep at least 25 yards from elk at all times. • If an elk charges you, find shelter in your vehicle or

behind a tall, sturdy barrier as quickly as possible. • You are responsible for your own safety.

Visiting Yellowstone National Park this summer? Come prepared. Take the pledge. Protect the park. MAMMOTH HOT SPRINGS, WY - If you plan to travel to Yellowstone National Park this summer, come prepared so you can protect yourself and this wild and awe-inspiring place. Summer is Yellowstone’s most popular season. Expect busy facilities and destinations, as well as delayed travel times due to heavy traffic and wildlife jams. If you want a less crowded experience, arrive early or stay late and avoid main attractions during peak hours (like Old Faithful, Grand Prismatic Spring, the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, and Norris Geyser Basin). Come prepared: Read the Top Things to Know.• Check current park conditions for information on

road construction, temporary road closures, and the backcountry situation report.

• Receive Yellowstone road alerts on your mobile phone. Text "82190" to 888-777 (an automatic text reply will confirm receipt and provide instructions).

• Reserve space in a campground or hotel - these facilities fill far in advance.

• Expect very limited access to cellular phone service and WiFi.

• Download Yellowstone’s app before you arrive.

Take the Yellowstone Pledge:• Pledge to act responsibly and safely, and set a

good example for others during your visit.• Put the pledge (10 ways) into action. • Tell a ranger or call 911 if you see someone

whose behavior might hurt them, others, or the park.

Protect yourself and the park while you are here: • Attend a ranger program or stop at a visitor

center.• Read the 2019 visitor guide (you’ll get a copy

when you drive through the entrance).• Stay on boardwalks and trails in thermal areas. • Maintain safe distances from wildlife (practice

safe selfies).• Be bear aware. Carry bear spray. Know how to

use it. Be alert. Make noise. Hike in groups. Do not run from a bear.

Yellowstone announces strategic priorities MAMMOTH HOT SPRINGS, WY - Yellowstone is releasing a series of major strategic priorities that will guide short and long-term decision making over the upcoming years. The priorities focus heavily on the park’s team and organization, strengthening the condition of the Yellowstone ecosystem, improving visitor experience, investing in infrastructure, and expanding partnerships and coalitions. “It’s important that our priorities and actions are clear, not only to the NPS team here in Yellowstone, but to ensure our partners and the public understand our direction in these very important areas,” said Superintendent Cam Sholly. Each of the park’s strategic priorities has a range of focus areas and actions that have been identified and will be continually refined and updated. The Strategic Priorities are:

1. Focus on the Core: Success in this priority is central to Yellowstone’s future and revolves around improving the working and living conditions of the Yellowstone team, how the park manages its financial resources, and how it works toward the best administrative and operational framework. An example of a specific action under this priority includes the development of a 5-year plan to substantially improve employee housing within the park. The multi-million dollar plan will work to improve existing housing, eliminate and replace 75 trailers currently used for seasonal employees, and will explore new housing partnership opportunities with gateway communities and partners.

2. Strengthen the Ecosystem and Heritage Resources: This priority focuses on understanding and responding to the effects of climate change, promoting large landscape and wildlife conservation efforts, and protecting and improving the condition of Yellowstone’s vast cultural and historic resources. Specific actions under this priority are being developed in a range of key areas including: a bison management strategy that stabilizes and potentially expands the quarantine program; working with states to protect and facilitate important wildlife migration corridors; and expanding efforts to combat the impacts of non-native species like lake trout in Yellowstone Lake.

3. Deliver a World Class Visitor Experience: This priority aims to provide clarity and direction around how the park will handle increased visitation in upcoming years – with special focus on visitor impacts on resources, staffing and infrastructure, visitor experience, and gateway communities. Importantly, the park is moving out of the data gathering phase and beginning to determine the appropriate short and long-term actions necessary to protect resources, mitigate impacts of congestion, and improve educational, recreational, and other visitor enjoyment opportunities. This priority also focuses heavily on improving public safety and resource protection.

4. Invest in Infrastructure: The park’s maintenance backlog exceeds half a billion and is likely much higher. Actions within this priority include: developing a more cogent deferred maintenance reduction plan, improving the quality of data and prioritization processes, and taking better advantage of current and future funding to improve asset conditions and protect investments.

5. Build Coalitions and Partnerships: Yellowstone’s success is predicated on strong partnerships and coalitions. The park will continue to build and align priorities with many partners including Yellowstone Forever and our incredibly generous philanthropic community, with tribes, elected officials, environmental and conservation groups, concessionaires, and communities, states, and other federal cooperators.

Yellowstone seeks comments on proposed development of seasonal housing for park concessionairesMAMMOTH HOT SPRINGS, WY - The National Park Service seeks public comment on an Environmental Assessment to allow park concessionaires, Xanterra and Delaware North, to develop seasonal housing for their employees in Yellowstone National Park at Canyon Village and the West Entrance. The concessionaires would fund this project.

The Environmental Assessment for the proposed project evaluated two alternatives. In Alternative A (no action), no additional seasonal housing would be constructed. Alternative B would redevelop and modify an abandoned camper loop at the Canyon Campground to house Canyon Lodge and Cabins (operated by Xanterra) employees. A combination of up to 14 recreational vehicle (RV) sites and six modular homes would be integrated into the camper loop, and existing comfort stations would be rehabilitated to provide shower and laundry facilities. Additionally, this proposal would include construction of up to 25 RV sites and a bath house adjacent to the Yellowstone General Stores warehouse (operated by Delaware North) near the West Entrance.

Comments must be received by June 14, 2019. Comments may be submitted online at: https://parkplanning.nps.gov/concessionshousing, by hand-delivery, or by mail. Comments will not be accepted by fax, email, or by any other means.

Hand-deliver comments during business hours to: Albright Visitor Center, Attention: Concession Housing EA, Mammoth Hot Springs, Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming 82190.

Mail comments to: Compliance Office, Attention: Concession Housing EA, P.O. Box 168, Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming 82190.

Public Comment Considerations

• Bulk comments in any format submitted on behalf of others will not be accepted.• Before including your address, phone number, email, or other personal information, be aware that your entire comment

– including your personally identifiable information – may be made public at any time. You may ask us to withhold your personally identifiable information from public review, but we cannot guarantee that we will be able to do so.

• The proposed project is an undertaking as outlined under Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) (36 CRF § 800). We welcome comments about historic properties or other cultural resources that fall within the project area.

The park is also completing compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act for this project, and consulting with the Wyoming State Historic Preservation Office on the proposed design.
