Celebrate “80 + 10” !

The Construction

Bishop Jugis blessed the new property in Candler and an outdoor Mass was cele-brated in 2004. A planning committee, formed by Fr. John Pagel, interviewed architects and contractors. A capital cam-paign to raise the required percentage of funds was also initiated, chaired by Dave Campbell. Design ideas for the new build-ing were solicited from the parishioners. How were parish-ioners’ wishes honored in the design? Light, windows and wood were the three most requested themes. The oak front doors, crafted by parishioners, Steve Cain and Pete Waldburger, assisted by others, were made from trees cut on this property. Pete guided the cleaning and refurbishing of the pews by parishioners, who also re-upholstered the kneelers. Wood from the oak trees is included in the large crucifix, altar and ambo (pulpit). Former parishioner, Tobi Grether, and his carpenters made all three items in his shop in Bilt-more. The altar and ambo were designed by former pa-rishioner Aaron Kalarovich, and reflect the angles of the windows over the altar and front doors. The building was constructed so the outside walls allow for future expansion. Much taller than it looks, the cupola and steeple had to be constructed on a concrete platform in the circle in front of the Church. A metal and glass artisan in Alexander, North Carolina, created the modern cross on the top. John Yurko, the architect, donated it to the par-ish. Calling us to Mass, the deep sound of the bells are really an electronic, programmable carillon. Our sanctuary floor is also special. It has greetings, blessings and signa-tures of parishioners and friends who signed the cement slab in the winter of 2007 before it was sealed and covered with a sub-floor and wood. Indeed we are supported by those who have gone before us. Photographs of those signings are in a binder in the parish office. Parishioners also worked on laying the rock “floor” for the Serenity Garden and Columbaria. This was greatly en-hanced over recent years by our Hispanic community with the addition of the grotto to Our Lady of Guadalupe.

Do You Have A Few Hours To Share? We Need You.

You have been generously sharing your treasure with an underserved and often forgotten popu-lation in our community by your monthly dona-tion of food to Loving Food Resources. Now we are reaching out to you to share your Time and

Talent to support our mission to provide nutritious food to those with serious health issues and allow them to use their limited resources to purchase their much needed medication and pay for other essential needs such as utilities, etc. When faced with the need to choose, food is the area that is sacrificed and reduced amounts and low cost food doesn't provide adequate nutrition further threatening their already compromised health. If you have a few hours to spare on one Saturday a month or on a Tuesday or Wednesday morning, we need you. For more information about how you can help or if you would like to take a tour of Loving Food Resources' Pantry please contact Paul Le Schack or Nancy Gavin (Pantry Director). Thank you for your ongoing support of our neighbors in need. Con-tact: Paul Le Schack, 828 665-9809, [email protected] or Nancy Gavin, 828 255-9282, [email protected]

COURT ST. JOAN OF ARC # 2471

IN UNITY AND CHARITY Please help the Catholic Daughters Court St. Joan of Arc support the Buncombe County Department of Health and Human Services by donating small new or gently used suitcases, traveling bags (sizes approximately 20” x 14” x 9”d) or backpacks for foster children. Catholic Daughters of the Americas strives to em-brace the principle of faith working through love in the promotion of justice, equality, and the advance-ment of human rights and human dignity for all. We donate to local and national charities, administer scholarship programs and strive “to be helping hands where there is pain, poverty, sorrow or sickness.” For example: We collect Box tops for Education to sup-port programs at Asheville Catholic School. Box tops are collected and sent to ACS twice a year, in April and December. Members of the parish are encour-aged to participate. Box tops may be given to any Catholic Daughter.

PEOPLE OF HOPE Throughout this Easter season the readings have drawn us into the ex-perience of the early church. We have tasted the excitement and zeal of the first Christians. Now, with them, we listen to the words of Saint Peter, who reminds us that when people notice that we are people of

hope, we should be ready to explain why. This challeng-es us. Do others even notice that we are people of hope? In a world often marked by cynicism and hopelessness, do we stand out as people who offer hope and reassur-ance to others? In today’s Gospel Jesus promises that when he leaves the earth he will not leave us orphaned. Today he promises to send his Advocate, the Spirit of truth who will be with us always. Let us acknowledge the presence of the Holy Spirit and ask the Spirit to make us people of hope. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
