Housing News & Updates

Many Fort Leavenworth residents will be leaving post soon and heading for new destinations. In order to make the move-out process as smooth as possible for our families, Fort Leavenworth Frontier Heritage Communities would like to provide some helpful information for vacating your home. The first step in the move-out process is for residents to email the housing office at [email protected] and request a “Notice of Intent to Vacate” form. Military orders are required at the time of turning in your notice. Residents will receive a “Move-Out Information” sheet which explains the move-out process: the “Move-Out Checklist” which details what is expected at the time of the final inspection. Once FLFHC has received your completed returned form, pre-inspection (if not completed already) and final inspection dates will be scheduled. The pre-inspection serves as an opportunity for our inspectors to assess your home for any items that may need tended to prior to vacating your home. It also gives our maintenance staff an insight on any items that may require additional attention in order to prepare the home for the next family. On the day of the final inspection, the inspector will conduct a walk-through of your home, account for all items listed as belonging to the house such as keys, carbon monoxide detectors, and garage door openers. The inspector will ensure that all cleaning responsibilities from the “Move Out Checklist” have been performed, and document and assess charges for any damaged or missing items. Please remember to remove any animal waste from your yard, reseed the yard if it has been damaged, remove all personal belongings and trash from the premises, and hose out your garbage can and recycling bin. These guidelines have been put in place to ensure a smooth transition for present and future occupants at Fort Leavenworth.

Composting: Although composting is not an alarming concern, excessive temperatures in compost can cause spontaneous combustion. Spontaneous combustion has been known to occur when organic materials self-heat to a temperature high enough to cause them to ignite. Spontaneous combustion is a byproduct of spontaneous heating, which occurs when a material increases in temperature without drawing heat from its surroundings. If the content reaches its ignition temperature, spontaneous ignition or combustion happens. According to the National Fire Protection Association:

• Fires caused by spontaneous combustion or chemical reaction accounted for an estimated average of 14,070 reported fires per year between 2005 and 2009. These included 3,200 structure fires, 1,150 vehicle fires, 5,250 outside non-trash and unclassified fires, and 4,460 outside trash or rubbish fires. The most common occupancy types for structure fires were residential (50% of fires), storage (12%), mercantile or business (9%) and manufacturing or processing (9%). Unclassified organic materials were the most common item first ignited in outside and unclassified fires, (excluding outside trash or rubbish fires) (28%), followed by light vegetation including grass (26%). In outside trash or rubbish fires, wood chips, sawdust, or shavings were the type of material first ignited in 13% of fires. These estimates are based on data from the U.S. Fire Administration’s (USFA’s) National Fire Incident Reporting System (NFIRS) and the National Fire Protection Association’s (NFPA’s) annual fire department experience survey.

BBQ Grills and Fire Pits: Please remember that BBQ grills, turkey fryers and fire pits must be placed at least 15 feet away from structures when in use. Never use grills or fire pits under porches or overhangs. Grills and firepits should not be placed near a structure until completely cooled. Allow ashes from BBQ grills and firepits to completely burn out & cool prior to discarding them.

RECYCLING COLLECTION POINT (RCP): All residents are encouraged to maximize curbside recycling. However, there is a self-service RCP located in a fenced-in yard on West Warehouse Rd. It accepts Paper, Glass, Cardboard, Aluminum & Steel Cans, Plastic Bottles and Containers. PLEASE REMEMBER to breakdown ALL cardboard boxes prior to placing them in the recycling bins!

During April’s pick-up, FLFHC residents gave over 12,000 lbs. of donations to the KC Mission!!!! Wow! The next KC Mission pick-up will be Saturday, May 9th. Details: The second Saturday of each month, if you have anything you would like to donate to the mission, simply place it curbside before 10 a.m. The Mission will be collecting items between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. For each donation, the mission will give you a voucher for tax credit that you can write off your taxes this coming tax season. Pest Control

Pest control is available to all of our residents. If you are having a pest issue,

contact the maintenance department for a scheduled appointment.

Inspect sinks and shower caulking for deterioration. Call the Maintenance

Department to have problem areas repaired.

Leaky Faucets?

Conduct a minor plumbing inspection. Check for any leaking faucets or

running toilets. Contact maintenance right away to schedule a work order.

Barren Outdoor Services Mowing Schedule

Summer schedule is subject to change due to inclement weather. When weather delays occur the

entire schedule will shift back a day. This means if it rains Monday, that Monday’s areas will be

completed on Tuesday and same for the rest of the schedule etc. That said the villages listed above

can always expect to be mowed on their scheduled day of service. Barren asks that all yard

ornaments, toys, hoses etc. be removed from the lawns on villages scheduled mow days to avoid

lawns being skipped for that week. No Mow stakes are available at the housing maintenance office

for any service member that would like to take care of their own lawn and flower bed. These same

stakes can be used for flower beds if you would like Barren to not maintain the flower beds only at

your home. Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday
