The early bulbs were still blooming, but the trees had not yet turned that very particular shade of green that speaks of new leaves. I missed that moment and returned to full-on spring. My fringe tree was in bloom, my lady banks roses were in full flush and the lawn was in need of a haircut. I did, however, get to enjoy cher- ry-blossom (sakura) season in Japan, which is absolutely magi- cal. The ornamental cherry liberally planted all over Japan is a hand- some tree all year, with an attractive shape and a convenient size. It has an interestingly textured bark that makes it look good even in winter. But in the spring, during its bloom, it is magnifi- cent. This was my third trip to Japan. I was only 2 years old the first time, so have virtually no memory of it. I went again as a teenager with my Mom and my Grandma and had ever since hoped to go again. But neither time before had I been there during cherry- blossom season. Individual cherry blossoms are small and delicate white with the barest touch of pink. En masse they are like a snowstorm of petals and a tree covered in blooms seems to have an internal glow — a light source of its own. An entire landscape of these trees can take your breath away and make you feel as if you have never truly experienced beauty before. There is a sakura quilt in my future. I dont know if I will be able to capture that inner glow — that magic — but I will try. That kind of inspiration must be responded to and I love that I have an avocation that allows me to at least try to express it. Wishing you all the inspiration and beauty that spring has to offer, Darlene Silverman Every spring is the only spring, a perpetual astonishment. Ellis Peters

President’s Message Members of the Guild, As you know if you are a reader of this space, Jules and I just took a vacation to Palau and Japan. When I left here it was still the edge of spring. Raffle Quilt The raffle quilt, Hearts in Flight, is ready to travel! Are you able to join me at one of these dates to sell tickets, share our love of quilting, and promote our 2020 Quilt Show? The dates are: May 4 Fest in the West at the USA Baseball Park, Cary May 17, 18, 19 Got to Be NC, State Fairgrounds August 24 & 25 Cary Lazy Daze, downtown Cary

I learned a lot about selling raffle tickets at the events in Cary. The most common rea-sons given to decline my request were “I have a lot of my grandmother’s quilts al-ready” and “I have no place to put that quilt.” So then I changed course. I said our guilt made and donated 1000 quilts last year and we are on track for another 1000 this year. I described very briefly the three types of people who received our comfort quilts. Many then said they could support those projects and then bought tickets. So try that way if you are uncomfortable selling raffle tickets. The monies raised for the Hearts in Flight quilt support our guilt, it’s mission, and projects. Come see me at the meeting. Thank you.

Sue Ann Jatko, Fundraising chair

Susan Edmonson is our last teacher for this guild year. She will be sharing her trunk show with us

on Thursday evening, May 16th. Susan's fabric art is embellished with extraordinary mixed media

techniques. All of her work is lavished with beading and embroidery. She loves working with vin-

tage style fabrics and colors. The patterns she designs have evolved from original pieces inspired

from vintage quilt designs and nature that showcase her own unique style.

There's still room in both of her workshops and the kit she has for her Friday workshop, "Garden

Girls" will make gathering supplies easy!

Contact Roberta to register for "Garden Girls" and/or "Making Faces", Saturday's class.

1) We received two requests for books on the twist pinwheel quilt technique that

was demonstrated at last month's Guild meeting. So we have purchased Let's

Twist and Let's Twist Again by CS Publishing. (There is also a Let's Twist One

More Time out there that we can get if we have enough demand.) We also have

two other new books, Me & My Sister's Fun Quilts by Barbara Groves and

Mary Jacobson (I can't figure out if they are really sisters but boy they look alike)

and Jelly Roll Quilts in a Weekend by Pam and Nicky Linton (who are a mother

and daughter design team from the UK). If you'd like to reserve any of these ti-

tles, shoot me an email and I will set it aside for you. We are always happy for

purchase suggestions.

2) One more call-out for our Guild member still looking for the book Sashiko

Handbags 14 on 14 by Nancy Shriber. Picture below.

3) We now will have a large plastic container clearly marked "FREE ITEMS" on

our table which will contain whatever we have to give away. Please bring any

items that you would like to re-home. After 3-4 months, unclaimed items will be

donated to The Scrap Exchange in Durham. (Eighteen inch wooden embroidery

hoop still available.) Please bring any craft supplies, quilting patterns, notions,

or anything else you have had sitting in your basement for a few years to the

next meeting. Another Guild member will find them interesting and put them to

use. (And the UFO bee will take any partially completed quilts.)

4) As always, we are happy to accept your used quilting magazines for our mag-

azine exchange table.

Thank you for your support of the Guild library!
