“Chevrolet is proud to once again pace theIndianapolis 500,” said Steve Majoros, MarketingDirector for the brand’s cars and crossovers.“The ZR1is the most powerful and fastest Corvette ever made. It’s the perfect choice to pace The Greatest Spectaclein Racing.’”

Like most racing series’ pace, medical, or safety cars, this particular ZR1 is outfitted with special equipmentthat allows the driver and/or passenger tocommunicate with the IndyCar race control and othertrack operatives. In addition, a full caution lightingsystem makes sure the low-sitting racing drivers cansee it properly when on track.

Of course, the most important quality of the Indy 500pace car has to be its outright speed. Just becausethe IndyCars behind it are zig-zagging ahead of astart or restart, it doesn’t mean they’re going slow—not even close. Even during caution periods, the pacecar can exceed 100 miles per hour in order to keepthe field moving and allow the drivers to keep theirtires up to temperature.

To continue moving forward there are numerousopportunities for you to participate in our Chapterwhich is vital to our continued success as TheOklahoma Chapter of NCRS. Let’s look at 2018 as ayear filled with opportunity and fun as we restore, preserve, document and enjoy our Corvettes.

I look forward to seeing everyone and their cars onSaturday.

Little Things Can Make a BigDifference in Judging of a Car by Russ Grimm

Before we get into the title of this story, let’sget some information onthe Oklahoma SpringJudging event that tookplace April 21. We had 19members attend thatSaturday morning to judgeCraig Rhyne’s 1968Silverstone 400hp bigblock convertible. Aftermatching volunteers withthe needed assignments

along withbrief judgesmeeting wewere ready tostart. The fiveteams hadvolunteered forexterior, interior, mechanical, chassis andoperations.Along with atabulation teamwe were readyfor judging onereally niceCorvette. Bythe time luncharrived thebiggest partwas done.Once that waswrapped upthe JudgingSchool startedup with “Parts,Parts and moreParts.” Thiswas a reviewand look backon how theCorvette hobbyhas changedfrom the earlydays and howthe swap meetmet the needsof the hobbyist. With thegrowth ofevents like the

original Bloomington Goldand Carlisle, the niche/cottage vendor growthevolved into the market wehave today for the partsneeded for our projects. So,with over 20 plus membersand guests we looked atoriginal parts, NOS partsfrom GM, and now therestoration parts on themarket. Trying to focus on

the needs of theowner to matchtheir goals, budget, and howthat works withthe NCRSstandard onjudging.Hopefully, it wasinformative andhelpful for allwho attended.

So now back tothe title of thisarticle. Craig’scar scored outat 93.8 for asecond flightaward. Keep inmind a top flightis 94. Not badfor a first timenew member.I’m sure it wasa greatexperience forhim with maybejust a little bit ofwhat ifquestions.Maybe moretime for thechassis cleanup? However,we have noredo’s in thejudging eventswith NCRS. But10 points in theraw score wouldhave made adifference.

So that waswhere it was leftafter reviewingthe judgingsheets but thestory did notend there.During the operations check where the team confirmsthat everything works as it should, the wipers did notopen the vacuum door and start up correctly. They

would workon theoverridefunction, butthat is nothow it wasintended towork from St.Louis. So,the deductionfor that wasmade. Butduring thecleanup andputting itemsback on thecar, such asthe aircleaner, alose wirewas foundand waspushed backon theconnection.Want toguess whereit went? Ofcourse, itwas the

wiper motor. Craig was concerned about safety andhad added the electrical tape around the wire, and aswe were talking about how it had been noted as adeduction, the wire was found to be off theconnection. No one was sure how it happened but —little things can make a difference!

A Visit To TheScott Anderson Collection

by Pat Cvanagh

Automobile collections have always fascinated me.The specific cars people collect and the stories

behind the cars are always interesting. Our visit toScott Anderson’s collection on April 14 was noexception. Scott graciously hosted over 35 membersand guests from our NCRS Oklahoma Chapter at the“The Galley”, his new Company headquarters and thehome to his automobile collection.

Scott grew up in Oklahoma City and began hisbusiness career with The Hertz Corporation, where heserved in various positions until joining Thrifty CarRental in 1987. He served in many capacities withincreasing responsibilities throughout his 24-yearcareer with the Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group. In2008, Scott, his partner Scott Thompson and theirextended team produced dramatic improvements inthe business and in the financial results of thecompany. From the time they took over in 2008,through 2011, they led the company from a stock

price of less than $1 per share per share to $87.50per share at the time of the sale of the company toHertz.

Scott left the Company after its sale to Hertz andformed Anderson Capital Partners, LLC. Theyinvest in companies with excellent products, strongreputations, and a history of positive performance. In March of 2014, Anderson Capital Partnersacquired The “The Galley” and Scott currentlyfunctions as its Owner, President and CEO. Healso owns ACP Properties, a property developmentcompany, and BSB Classics, the company he usesfor his car hobby.

The construction of his new Company headquarterswas completed in 2017. It provides a venue todisplay the Company’s products along with hisautomobile collection. It is a beautiful facility thatwe all enjoyed.

The layout of the automobile showroom makes awonderful backdrop to view his collection ofautomobiles. The collection is surrounded by a wallfrom an 1880’s Amish barn that was disassembledand transported to Tulsa from a small community in

Page 7: May 2018 Sidepipe - NCRS · 2018. 5. 7. · Galley” at 126th and Memorial April 21– Spring Judging Event Thanks to all involved, and Details will be shared later in this Side

central Wisconsin, a full size replica of a balcony froma home in Telluride, Colorado, a 1950s style dinnerand a vintage candy store with many original fixtures.Original artwork of his cars and vintage signs alsohang throughout the showroom. In the rear of thefacility he has a professional workshop used tomaintain his collection.

With a lifelong interest in automobiles Scott startedhis collection in 2010 with his iconic 1977 “Bandit”Trans Am. This has expanded to 14 special interestautomobiles including his 1953 #249 Corvettecurrently under restoration in Tulsa and his original21k mile, Triple Crown award winning 427/425 1966Corvette Coupe. Also on display in his showroomwere two well-known NASCAR Super Speedway carsdriven by Jimmy Johnson and Jeff Gordon, a 1956356A Porsche Speedster, an unrestored 1938 JaguarSS100, a 2006 Ford GT and a F12 Ferrari Berlinettawhich was formally Rick Hendricks personal car.

Scott currently has four cars under-going restorationat Classic Jaguar in Austin, Texas. These include a1960 Aston Martin DB-4 Coupe, a 1967 330GTC V-12 Ferrari, a 1961 Jaguar XKE outside latch roadsterand a 1950 Jaguar XK-120 alloy-bodied roadster. This will be a great reason for a return visit!

Subsequent to our visit, Scott’s freshly restored 1961Jaguar XKE Coupe arrived back in his showroom. This car is number 13 of 20 outside latch XKE’scoupes of which only 9 are still known to still exist. With over 5000 hours in the restoration it isspectacular!

Since the facility was opened Scott has hosted anumber of charity fund raising events to support theTulsa community. I am proud to call Scott a friend andwant to thank him for showing us all this very specialcollection.
