It’s hard to believe that May is already here! During May, we honour Mary, the Mother of God.

During the month of May, we will be saying the Hail Mary during morning prayers. Also during

May, we would like to wish each of our Bishop David Motiuk mothers a very happy Mother’s Day!

May is also good news month at Bishop David Motiuk! First, we are very pleased to let you know

that the Lewis Estates Community League has been awarded the necessary grants to get our play-

ground started. The build phase of the project will begin sometime between August and October.

We are hoping to have the grand opening of the playground in the Spring of 2019. Thank you

to the Lewis Estates Community League Playground committee, who have been working tirelessly

for many years to ensure that we would have a playground, along with trustee Debbie Engel and

MLA Jon Carson for their work in advocating for our playground. We are excited that we will

soon be breaking ground on this project!

We are very excited to let you know that our district has approved our request to apply to the International Baccalaureate as a candidate school. We will be applying to offer both the Primary and Middle Years International Baccalaureate Programs at Bishop David Motiuk. The IB programs are for all students and they focus on the development of the whole child while meeting children’s academic, social, physical, emotional and cultural needs. IB students become critical and compas-sionate thinkers, informed participants in our global community and responsible citizens. We were pleased to have Trustee Debbie Engel at our School Council Meeting on April 24. Trus-

tee Engel spoke about our school district and the incredible growth we have experienced over the

Class Lists for Next Year

Soon we will be looking at class lists for next year. We ask for your support in allowing

our teachers to establish class lists and placements. We wish to create an environment

that will result in your child’s ultimate success and happiness. Many factors are taken

into consideration in designing class lists. For example, we strive for a balance of gen-

der, learning styles and needs, work ethic, academic achievement, social relationships

and the overall makeup of the group. A great deal of time and consideration is given

to the placement process and these important educational decisions. The well being of

each individual student is at the heart of all decisions. Certainly, if you have specific

learning concerns, we would be happy to pass them along to teachers as they are mak-

ing up class lists for the following year, with the understanding that the needs of the

classroom as a whole take precedence over requests for classroom placement - particu-

larly placements with friends. Please communicate these concerns in writing to Ms. Volk

by May 11. Class lists will not be made public until the first day of school to allow for

changes over the summer. Kindergarten classes will be assigned after staggered entry

in the fall. Thank you for your support!

We know that many parents are already thinking about hours, fees and school supplies for

next year. In calculating our hours of operation, we are required to have 950 hours of

instruction each school year. Our hours of operation will be changing next year due to

shared bussing with Sister Annata Brockman School. We are waiting for final approval of

our hours of operation from the district and then we will share this information with our

parent community. Please watch your email! Next year, we will not have professional de-

velopment days. Hopefully, this will help in terms of planning in your family calendars.

School fees are currently under review and will be posted near the end of May. Every

effort is being made to keep school fees on par with what they were last year.

We are currently finalizing our supply lists and then they will be posted to our website.

Parents will have the option of either purchasing supplies at local stores, or ordering sup-

ply packages online through SchoolStart.ca. Online ordering of supplies is convenient, so

we are happy to offer this service to our parents. Orders placed through School Start are

delivered directly to your home and are clearly labeled with your child’s name. Infor-

mation about School Start, including a short video, is available online at schoolstart.ca.

Staffing and classes depend on who is here for next year. We continue to experience an

increase in enrollment at Bishop David Motiuk. We want to have as accurate a count as

possible. If you are planning a move, please let us know in writing, by email, or by

phone so that we can have the right number of teachers and the right number of students

in each classroom. This will also be beneficial for your children so that their student infor-

mation can follow them. Thank you! A special thank you goes out to those of you who

have already been in communication with us regarding moves for next year. We appre-

ciate it!

Moving? Please let us know.

A number of parents have asked us about staffing for next year. Staffing is tentative until

our staffing cycle is completed in mid-June. We will have a clearer picture of what is

happening in June and will provide further information in our June newsletter. Since we

will have an additional five classes overall, we will be welcoming new teachers next year!

Staffing for 2018-2019

We are already planning for the 2018-2019 school year. Students who are currently

registered at Bishop David Motiuk do not have to complete registrations forms for the

next school year. For next year, we are limited to two 100 Voices classes. We are pro-

jecting four kindergarten, five grade one, four grade two, four grade three, three grade

four, and two classes in each of grades five through nine.

Thank you for spreading the good news about Bishop David Motiuk School. We have a

terrific community of students, parents and staff and we continuously receive positive

feedback about our programs and our students. Thank you for your support!

Registrations for 2018-2019

Students in grades six and nine will be writing Provincial Achievement Tests (PATs) during

May and June. Junior high students will be writing final exams in June. Please check the

calendar for the dates and ensure your child is ready through proper preparation, study

and sufficient rest. Students do better on tests when they are well-rested and have a nutri-

tious breakfast before writing exams.

PAT’s and Final Exams

Congratulations to Rafael De Lara who has been chosen as the very first recipient of the

Superintendent’s Award of Excellence at Bishop David Motiuk School! Rafael was chosen

for this honor by his teachers. He will receive his award at a special reception on

Wednesday, May 16th. Rafael’s family and Ms. Volk will also be in attendance. Great

job, Rafael! We are very proud of you!

Grade Nine Farewell The Grade Nine Farewell at Bishop David Motiuk is in keeping with Archdiocesan guide-

lines for graduations and is designed to ensure that each of our grade nine students is

able to participate. First, the mass and dance are on separate days, which is in keeping

with the Archdiocesan policy (514) on graduation masses, which states:

The Mass for graduates is to be clearly distinct from other graduation events

(convocation, prom, etc.) A distinct day for the Mass would help to highlight its

unique significance.

Second, there will be no cost for families for the Grade Nine Farewell.

The date for the Farewell Mass is Thursday, June 14 at 6:30 PM at Annunciation Parish.

Following the mass, there will be a short program and grade nine students will be pre-

sented with their grade nine diplomas. At the conclusion of the Farewell Exercises, stu-

dents and families will be invited to gather for a stand-up dessert reception in the par-

ish hall. At this time, there will also be opportunities for pictures. Since our grade nine

group is relatively small this year, we can accommodate a limited number of additional

guests such as step-parents, siblings or grandparents. Please be aware, though, that the

parish hall is very small and will not accommodate a large group. We expect that the

formal part of the evening will conclude at approximately 8:00 pm, so families who

would like to continue the celebration at local restaurants are asked to make their reser-

vations after this time.

Student dress for this occasion should be semi-formal. Girls should wear a nice skirt or

dress, while boys should wear dress pants and a tie. It is not necessary for parents to

spend a great deal of money on new clothes for this occasion.

The following day, Friday June 15, we will have a special luncheon at the school for our

grade nine students. A short program will be planned for the luncheon by our grade

nine Farewell committee.

Lifetouch will be on hand to take year end cap and gown photographs for our kinder-

garten AM and grade nine students on Monday, May 14. Kindergarten PM classes will

have their photos taken on Friday, May 18.

Our Bishop David Motiuk Junior High Track Meet will take place on Tuesday, May 25,

2018 at Coronation Field. Junior high students are encouraged to participate in this

school-wide fieldtrip creating opportunities for heightened school spirit, camaraderie

and healthy competition. We ask that students come prepared for all weather conditions

which may include sunscreen, rain gear or warm clothes. In addition, they will need wa-

ter bottles, a packed lunch and PE attire in order to compete in their respective events.

Parents are welcome to attend and cheer their child(ren) on!

For planning purposes, please be aware that if your child qualifies in the top 3 of their

event (top 1 in the 400m), they will qualify to compete in our Zones Track Meet on Fri-

day, June 1. Qualifiers from Zones go on to compete in the City Final Track Meet held on

Friday, June 8. Best of luck to all of our Bishop David Motiuk athletes!

This year at Bishop David Motiuk School, we hosted 3 separate student Faith

Days. The first Faith Day, which was on March 21st, was dedicates to our Early

Learning classes, with grade 5 student leaders planning, organizing and leading

the sessions. The second Faith Day, on April 12th, was dedicated to our grade 1-

5 students, and included sessions led by junior high student leaders. Along with

these sessions, the elementary students also had the opportunity to hear from Fr.

Julian Bilyj and Mr. Ernest, and were treated to a performance from our Celebra-

tion Choir. Finally, the third Faith Day, on April 19th, was dedicated to our grade

6-9 students. During the course of the day, our students heard from Mr. Marc

Barylo, Fr. Paul Kavanagh and Fr. Marc Cramer. They also enjoyed performanc-

es from our Celebration Choir and Miss Tungal's very own Music Ministry. Over

the course of these three days, all students were given the opportunity to deepen

their faith as a school community. We are very grateful to all who volunteered

their time to make all three days a huge success!

“Hail, holy Queen, mother of mercy, our life, our sweetness, and our hope.” ~ The Hail Holy Queen

In the month of May, when our thoughts turn towards paying special honor to our mothers and the women in our lives who fill that maternal role, we also turn our hearts toward our Mother, Mary. She is our model of saying “yes” to the call of our God, and she is also our model of grace, compassion, love, and tenderness. As we pray the rosary, we pray with hope to our holy Mother to intercede on our behalf so that we may feel God’s abundant mercy.

The week of May 6-11 is Catholic Education Week and May 10 is World Catholic Education Day. It is a time when we will ask our staff and our students to focus on the gifts that are to be found in an education that is grounded in our Catholic faith. Our work will be centred on empowering our community to articulate the many valuable aspects of attending Catholic schools. This, in turn, will also enable people to advocate for the need for ongoing and meaningful support of Catholic education in our province. It is important that we all speak up for Catholic education with a strong voice!

Edmonton Catholic Schools has many partners who help us provide exceptional learning opportunities and supports for our students. One of our excellent partners is the City of Edmonton. They provide support for many of our programs and events. One such example is our upcoming 37th Annual Ben Calf Robe Traditional Pow Wow. This amazing experience of Indigenous culture will take place from 1-10 pm on May 12 at the Commonwealth Community Recreation Centre. Admission is free, and it is a great family event! To learn more about Our Partnerships, visit our public website at www.ecsd.net and look under “About Us”.

Our District Budget, 2018-2019 will be presented at the May 29 Public Meeting of the Board. Thank you to all our stakeholders who took the time to complete our Budget Survey. Your voice was so important in helping us to set our priorities for this budget.

I leave you with words of thanks from Pope Francis to all the women who fill the role of Mother in our world:

“Mothers are the strongest antidote to the spread of self-centred individualism… It is they who testify to the beauty of life.” Certainly, “a society without mothers would be dehumanized, for mothers are always, even in the worst of times, witnesses to tenderness, dedication and moral strength. Mothers often communicate the deepest meaning of religious practice in the first prayers and acts of devotion that their children learn… Without mothers, not only would there be no new faithful, but the faith itself would lose a good part of its simple and profound warmth… Dear mothers: thank you! Thank you for what you are in your family and for what you give to the Church and the world”. (Pope Francis, Amoris Laetitia, 174)

Have a wonderful month of May!

Sincerely, Joan Carr Superintendent

Mothers and Myrrh-bearing Women

Soon after Jesus’ resurrection, the word of God continued to spread and the number of faithful greatly increased – so much so that the twelve disciples had difficulty in continuing to care for the widows and the daily distribution of food. To help in these important tasks, the disciples chose seven men from among their midst, including Stephen, who would become the first-martyr for the faith (see Acts 6:1-7). Yet, men were not the only ones who followed Jesus and supported his ministry, both in his life, and at his death. So, as we celebrate Mother’s Day, let us recall the myrrh-bearing women, who ran to the tomb on that first Easter morning.

The myrrh-bearing women are the eyewitnesses of Jesus’ death and the place of his burial. They are also the witnesses of his resurrection. And they are the ones who receive the glorious news from the angel, who tells them, “Do not be alarmed; you are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has been raised; he is not here. Look, there is the place they laid him. But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see him, just as he told you.” As we read in Father Thomas Rosica’s book, Stay with Us…, Encounters with the Risen Lord: “These women represented countless nameless yet devoted women who were part of the crowds Jesus addressed and in the homes he frequented. “They were the courageous ones who reached out fearlessly to touch the fringe of his cloak. “They shouted after him; they entered his hosts’ houses uninvited; they poured expensive perfumed nard over his feet. “They knew the promise made to them, they welcomed him, they knew from Jesus’ own treatment of them the strength of their own testimony to him, and they were unafraid to show him great love. “In the end, they stood beneath his dying body, while the men were hiding for fear of the authorities. “It was the women who grounds spices for his burial and calculated how to roll back the stone from his tomb. “They attended firmly to the business of his living and dying. “[And] they were rewarded for their fidelity by being the first recipients of the Good News of the Resurrection” (pp. 45-46). My late mother, Olga – God bless her soul, was also a myrrh-bearing woman in her own right. As I’ve shared before, she taught me as a young boy about God, about love, and the importance of family and friends. She taught me about caring for neighbours. She taught me my daily prayers – the Our Father, the Hail Mary, how to make the sign of the Cross, and the Ten Commandments – in Ukrainian I might add, and even before I ever attended summer Catechism

2

with the Sisters Servants of Mary Immaculate at the age of 5 (mom didn't want the Sisters to think that she neglected her duty as a mother in passing down the faith to her children!). Like my mother, your mother, all mothers are myrrh-bearing women. They received the Good News of the Resurrection of Our Lord that very first Easter morning. They received the great command to go tell others of the joy of the Gospel message, of God’s love and mercy in the world. This Mother’s Day, let us offer a word of prayer and thanksgiving to God for all moms who have showed us love and raised us to be who we are today, truly children of God. Happy Mother’s Day to all moms!

And to my mom, may God grant you eternal rest! I love you! Bishop David

Mother’s Day – Honoring Our Mothers

The practice of celebrating Mother’s Day comes from Civil War times. Mrs. Ann Reeves Jarvis wanted to organize a special day for mothers who had sons fighting on opposing sides in the Civil War. Ann Jarvis was a peace activist who cared for wounded soldiers on both sides of the American Civil War, and created Mother's Day Work Clubs to address public health issues. Jarvis’s daughter, Anna, wanted to honor her mother by continuing the work she started and, in 1907, began a movement to make Mother’s Day a national event. Anna wanted to set aside a day to honor all mothers because she believed a mother is “the person who has done more for you than anyone in the world.” Finally, in 1914, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the second Sunday of May as Mother’s Day.

Mothers teach love. And they teach it by doing loving things for their children and for other people. Mothers, like Jesus, become the measurement of how we are to love. Jesus said, “I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another.” (John 13:34) So every mother silently says the same. Watch me and you will learn how to love. Let me move you from self-centeredness to sharing and concern for others. Watch me and I will show you how to do it. This way, every mother furthers the good news of Christ. Out of French Revolution came the story of a mother who had wandered through the woods for three days with her two children, trying to survive on roots and leaves. On the third day, she heard some soldiers approaching and quickly hid herself and the children behind some bushes. The sergeant in charge prodded the bushes to see what was stirring behind them. When he saw the starving woman and children he immediately gave them a loaf of bread. The mother took it eagerly, broke it into two pieces, and gave one piece to each of the children. “She has kept none for herself,” the sergeant said. “Because she is not hungry?” a soldier asked. “Because she is a mother,” the sergeant replied. Love is taught by loving actions. Our first experience of love in this life comes from our mothers. We recognize that instinctively. We need to acknowledge also that the love of God is taught by lots of “moms” and “dads” – even the ones that are childless or single. And so Mother’s Day and Father’s Day really celebrate all those people who have mothered and fathered us, and taught us how to love. “Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another.” (John 13:34) This is the perfect verse and message for Mother’s Day. Why? Because love is what mothers do best. Happy Mother’s Day! Fr. Julian Bilyj District Chaplain Resources: A World of Stories for Preachers and Teachers by Fr. William J. Bausch. The Edmonton Catholic School District has experienced

consistent growth for more than a decade.

City of Edmonton Bus Network Redesign

The City of Edmonton is transforming its transit system to better serve the needs of

Edmontonians. In March 2018, the City unveiled a draft bus network based on feedback

gathered from thousands of Edmontonians in the Transit Strategy, which was approved by City

Council in 2017. The bus network redesign is the first major action to come out of the Transit

Strategy.

The new network is scheduled to be rolled out in June 2020, but before it’s implemented, you

are encouraged to provide feedback so it can be refined to better serve you. Until June 14, the

City is hosting several community workshops to gather feedback. You can also provide

feedback online by completing a survey.

For more maps showing the proposed routes, frequently asked questions and videos about the

project, visit edmonton.ca/newbusroutes.

Youth, Parents and the Internet DID YOU KNOW? 91% of the teens (ages 13 to 17) are using mobile devices to access the internet (Pew Research Centre, 2015). The Internet is an increasing part of today’s culture and has drastically changed the way that children and youth interact with the world. They use the Internet to:

• Learn – by having access to information, knowledge, opinions, education tools and even teachers; • Communicate – express ideas, share information and experiences; • Interact socially with friends and peers; • Create and share content; • Play and be entertained – games, movies, music, books, etc.

It is more and more common that these activities are occurring outside the home or school, and beyond the traditional desktop computer, on handheld devices such as tablets and smartphones. With this new and exciting way of connecting with the world, the Internet also offers new risks: cyberbullying, exposure to inappropriate material, online predators and revealing too much personal information. Learning to recognize the warning signs of these risks will allow trusted adults to intervene and lessen the potential negative impacts. By acting as a resource, parents/guardians can help make the Internet a safer place for their families. It is important that parents/guardians stay well-informed about current issues to understand what their children are experiencing on and off the Internet: if they are social networking, instant messaging, using webcams, or blogging. It is important to help them use these tools safely by learning how to use them yourself. Research has shown that children whose parents/guardians regularly talk to them about personal safety are more likely to exhibit responsible behaviour on their own and make independent and informed decisions. To this end, teaching our children about the importance of “netiquettes” and instilling in them the notion of “think before you click” should be our primary goal. Additional Resources:

School Team Advisors for Youth (STAY)

Junior high schools in the Edmonton Catholic School District each have “School Team Advisors for Youth” (STAY) which are comprised of retired Police Officers.

The STAY role involves: • Educating, mentoring, and empowering students. • Educating and mentoring parents on the realities their children face each day by raising parent awareness on

these issues. • Educating and mentoring staff on the realities that students face each day. Working in partnership with the

administration of the school to develop action plans for safety and health of all students. Stay Advisors in our junior high schools make a difference in the lives of our youth by encouraging them to “STAY” in school. The STAY teams work hard to ensure our youth succeed in life.
