CHAMBER NEWS

is a publication of the North Bay and District Chamber of

Commerce. Advertisements and the views expressed herein are not necessarily endorsed by the

Chamber, its Board of Directors, staff or its membership.

Bylaw changes for 2017 The board has now approved the changes to the bylaws. A full copy of the bylaws will be sent to the membership this Friday for review and will be brought forward to the AGM for ratification. Just to highlight, the majority of the changes are wherever the titles President, Vice-President and Executive Director were noted, these have been changed to reflect the new governance model and now stand as Chair, Vice-Chair and President and CEO, respectively. Secondly, the AGM must now fall within six months of the fiscal year end, and as such, this bylaw section has been changed to reflect as such. The North Bay & District Chamber of Commerce runs on the January to December fiscal year.

Notes from the May board meeting

• New member, Paul Cook made a presentation to the board regarding his business, Retired Badge Consulting Inc. Mr. Cook is working with other unique groups of investigators and provides services such as: investigative services, risk management, security, training, and background screening.

• Patti Carr and Peter Chirico attended the Ontario Chamber of Commerce annual general meeting in Sarnia recently. Thirty-seven resolutions were put forward at this event, eight of which were co-sponsored by the North Bay & District Chamber of Commerce. Just prior to the policy sessions, two resolutions were withdrawn, two were amalgamated, and at the end of the voting only one resolution was defeated and one referred to the board, as such all others were approved. The eight co-sponsored policies were: Creating Northern Ontario Economic Hubs, Technology Clusters and the Innovation Ecosystem, Reducing Permitting Delays in Mining Exploration, Increasing Transparency in Crown Corporation Divestment, Addressing the impact of Climate Change on Transportation Infrastructure in Ontario’s Far North, Providing More Clarity for Industry’s Duty to Consult, Improving Indigenous Education in Ontario, Implementing a Moratorium on School Closures, and Providing Post-Secondary Students with the Supports Needed to Gain Employment.

• The Chamber is assisting with the Dr. Roberta Bondar Foundation - Ontario 150 Challenge. The Chamber has been provided twenty Nikon cameras to loan to school groups and community groups to participate in this “nature” photography challenge. For approximately six months, groups will have the opportunity to borrow the camera kits and submit their photos for the Challenge. North Bay is one of seven communities that are participating in this unique opportunity.

• Working with the Ontario Victims Services and North Bay Police Services, the Chamber will be reaching out to managers and front line staff at the hotels and motels in North Bay area to educate them on a program called “Know the Signs, Make the Call” (see page 7 of this newsletter for the poster). This program is to recognize the signs of sexual exploitation, especially of minors. Calls are made anonymously but will assist front line guest services representatives in the hospitality industry to recognize potential victims.

• Congratulations to the ARC Committee from the Near North School Board on their recent recommendation of three high schools into two; rather than the first indicated option of three high schools into one super school. The Chamber will be submitting comments for review by the school board trustees prior to their June 12th meeting on the subject. The Young Professionals Committee of the North Bay & District Chamber of Commerce have also provided comment to the Chamber submission, as it will be that age group that may be looking at starting families that may be affected. Initially the Chamber was strictly looking at the economics of not having a school in the Ferris area.

• Summer in the Park has announced their Friday night entertainment and are currently awaiting the signed contracts for Saturday night’s entertainment. Wristbands and VIP seating tickets are now on sale. Wristbands are being sold at a number of locations, including the Chamber office.

• Congratulations to the Rotaract Club of North Bay-Nipissing on raising $5,000 at the Poutine, Pints and Plaid event for Big Brothers Big Sister.

• Armed Force Day will be celebrated this year as a weekend of events. See the poster in this newsletter that was announced recently.

• Deadline for nominations for the Private Business Growth Award in July14th. The event is presented by Grant Thornton and the Canadian Chamber of Commerce. CLICK HERE for more information.

• While the Board was saddened by the news that Chicago Café has closed, they certainly offered their congratulations to Ed and Helen Eng on their retirement from the restaurant business and thanked them for their long standing commitment to the community for many years.
