Pin Oak Charity Horse Show

Hi Sarah,

Nice spread! I just received a copy.

Cheers, Ana Villaronga-RomanKCAM Contemporary Art Museum Fort Bend

May is finally here, and that means gearing up for graduation, the end of school, baseball and Mother’s Day. Last Mother’s Day, we had a wonderful brunch with my mom. Had I known it would be the last Mother’s Day I would spend with her, I think I would have savored every second. So, if your mom is still here, savor the moments!

Our cover story this month is about mothers, sons and baseball! You’ll meet a fun group of boys who grew up playing baseball together and now are playing against each other at various high schools.

Also in this issue, we cover many upcoming community events, including De-livered with Love benefiting DeliverFund, a non-profit organization helping to end human trafficking, and the 71st Pin Oak Charity Horse Show benefiting Texas Children’s Hospital, Ronald McDonald Family Rooms and Candlelighters of Hous-ton.

Finally, please e-mail me your graduation photos to be included in an upcoming issue! Congratulations to our outstanding Class of 2016 graduates.

Absolutely! yours,

Maybe the players hear the crowd in the stadium chanting, maybe they do not. Maybe they see their fans dressed in their school colors, faces and bellies painted, exhilarated smiles on their faces, and maybe they do not. What they are keen of, however, is their other eight brothers on the field, a connection between them like an invisible string. For five Katy baseball players, that string, that bond, stretches far beyond the field they stand on and the innings before them.

The Beginning of Something Great

America’s favorite pastime has been the catalyst for a unique friendship in Katy that began with three baseball-loving five-year-olds named Zach Brown, Hayden Ebrecht and Max Wright.

“Baseball is my life,” said Hayden, who is now 16 years-old. “When I step inside those white lines, I forget about everything else except playing the sport that I love.”

“Hayden started playing baseball it seems like when he was born,” said his mother Robin Ebrecht. “He would wake up in the morning, still in a diaper with a pacifier in his mouth, and bring me a glove and a ball and want to play catch.”

Max has loved any sport with a ball since he was a year old and grew to love baseball as he watched his older brother play the game, which is essentially the same story for Zach and Hayden, who also watched older brothers play. Those similarities — especially being the youngest of their siblings — is probably what made them “click” when they began playing baseball together. While their older

T here is something transcendent about standing in that verdant diamond of a field, waiting, anticipating for the crack of the baseball as it connects with the bat. And when

that connection happens, whether behind the bat or on the field, each player knows exactly what to do. Their heart rate increases, their legs pump into action and their senses sharpen preparing for where the ball will land projecting the game forward.

siblings became immersed in their own activities, the three little guys found a connection with each other, and by the time they were six-years-old, the trio won a World Series tournament in Sulphur, Louisiana.

“The common bond was definitely their competitiveness,” said Stephanie Brown, Zach’s mother. “They just clicked.”

A Circle of FiveTheir friendship wasn’t complete,

though. By the time the boys were nine-years-old, the crew pulled two more into their circle — Carson Rollins and Matthew Zuniga. Since then, the five boys have been inseparable cronies. Baseball, it seems, was the soundtrack to their lives and united them in ways only best friends can. For every summer over the past decade, their families have spent weeks and weekends together across the nation in Louisiana, Florida, Missouri, Alabama, Colorado and New York to watch the boys compete in baseball and other sports as well.

“To see them grow into men right before my eyes really makes you realize how quickly time flies,” said Cydney Wright, Max’s mother. “The times we have shared watching our boys play has been so much fun. From the thousands of pictures taken, countless road trips and holiday stays to multiple

World Series events, matching family team shirts and painting cars before a big game — the memories we share with these boys are beyond words.”

“We do things together as a team, but more importantly, we are like family,” Ebrecht added.

More Than a GameOver the years, the families have

watched the boys play on several teams including American Avengers, Texas Patriots, YMCA, Katy Kaos and now the Twelve Baseball in addition to their high school teams, but to this extended baseball family, the sport is more than just a favorite pastime. The game is rooted in their lives and serves as a means to teach their sons how to be good men.

“Baseball runs deeper than just a sport,” Brown said. “It has been so much of our children’s lives, and so many life lessons are wrapped up in this game.”

Baseball has given the boys disappointments, victories, tough lessons and sweet rewards. It has taught their sons about character and teamwork, about humble winnings and gracious losses, about having enough heart, overcoming adversity and the value of integrity. And through each lesson, the boys’ mothers are beside them.

“Baseball is competitive, but it teaches a strong work ethic and how that pays off,” Brown said. “The boys have been taught that grades are

important and how to be tough and take instruction and praise. I hope they have learned to be a good sport and to respect the game. All of these things will last a lifetime regardless of where they go from here.”

A Lovely AnomalyLike their sons, the mothers have

bonded over baseball victories and losses, and the memories shared are indicative of their solid bond, one that encircles not only the boys and their mothers, but their fathers, older siblings and even the grandparents as well.

“The support of these ladies has been such a blessing. The connection and memories we share are priceless,” Wright said. “The memories made both on and off the field will be forever treasured. We like to say, ‘We don’t go on vacation unless a sporting event is tied to it.’”

“With a serious group of baseball boys, family vacations are usually around baseball. People have always told me they don’t understand how we can do baseball every weekend, but the thing is we love the families we play with, and we look forward to heading to the ballpark, ” Brown added. “This is a great group of moms who all put their families first. We have just had

Matthew and Norma Zuniga.

Carson and Cindy Rollins.

so much in common, and we will be lifelong friends.”

To outside eyes, this baseball circle may seem an anomaly, but simply put, this circle is the very definition of love and unity. “We have endured many personal ups and downs to countless baseball victories and losses, but through it all, I am forever grateful for their friendships,” Wright said.

Different Diamonds, Same Chums

Now sophomores, the boys play for rivaling high school baseball teams throughout Katy ISD, but their bond remains unbroken. Zach plays for Cinco Ranch High School, Hayden plays for Katy High School, Max plays for Taylor High School, Carson plays for Tompkins High School, and Matthew plays for Seven Lakes High School.

“You always want them to succeed or do great,” Hayden said of playing against his buds. “But when you step on the field, it’s me versus them.”

While they may be rivals on the field, once they step outside of that diamond,

they are the same old chums they have always been. “Our friendships have grown over the years. Now that we are playing against each other, it makes it more fun,” Max said. “The competition increases, and so does the ‘trash talking’ between us.”

Brown said she enjoys seeing the boys compete against each other because none of them give any slack on the field when they face off, and at the end of the game, the friendship takes

over once again.“They may not get to see each

other as much, but they will always be friends,” Wright said. “They have all grown into really great young men who share a love of sports and a long friendship. Being on different school teams has just added a fun element of competitiveness to their friendships, because they all like to talk a little ‘smack’ to each other now and then about who has the better team. ”

Life is ever-changing, and this circle of baseball moms know this all too well. The boys are older now, and their games carry a bit more weight as they plan for what comes after graduating high school. They wear different school colors when they take their seats in the stadium and often have to cheer against their kid’s best friend. But just as much as things change, things also stay the same.

“It does seem strange sometimes cheering against these boys who you have always cheered for over the years,” Ebrecht said. “But, you know deep down that you wish only the best for all of them.”

“It does seem strange sometimes cheering

against these boys who you have always cheered

for over the years. But you know deep down that you wish only the best for all of them.”

Meet Cheryl Li

By Joan Frances

HOT SHOTHigh School

“Being part of the Mustang community is unforgettable,an experience that I will treasure forever.” – Cheryl Li

J ames E. Taylor High School in Katy Independent School District continues to strive for

perfection as needs are met for ev-ery student. Academics, sports and extracurricular activities enable stu-dents to achieve a well-rounded edu-cation. Seniors graduate fully pre-pared to find the right path in life. One senior who is a talented leader is Cheryl Li.

Cheryl has excelled in Advanced Placement (AP) classes, achieving top scores in academics. She was awarded AP Scholar with Distinc-tion and is a National Merit Scholar Finalist. She is the secretary for Mu Alpha Theta, a member of the Na-tional Honor Society, executive vice president of the Future Business Leaders of America and the club founder and former president of the Red Cross Club. In addition, Cheryl is the social studies captain for the University Interscholastic League Academics, as well as a previous member of the Current Events and Computer Applications teams.

Cheryl currently serves as the lieutenant governor of Division 3W for the Texas-Oklahoma District of Key Club International. When asked why being a leader is fulfilling to her, Cheryl said, “As Lieutenant Governor of Key Club International, I serve nine clubs, helping others serve their community. Beyond that, being a part of this organization has forever shaped me as a person. It has developed my leadership abili-ties and broadened my understand-ing of the world. I am now much more confident, unafraid to take the lead, a 180 from my freshman year.

“I am also more outgoing. Because

of Key Club, I have had many new ex-periences – from planning a conference for 200 people to selling ads, as well as making television appearances and executing a public relations campaign. I’ve had the opportunity to pitch ideas, practice parliamentary procedure and debate with my peers. Most impor-tantly, I have been able to give back to both my local community and those abroad through community service and fundraising for campaigns. Key Club has been my doorway into the commu-nity and prepared me for my future.”

In addition to her extensive aca-demic accomplishments, Cheryl is an artist. She played the cello for the Varsity Symphony Orchestra and the Chamber Orchestra at Taylor High School. She is also the vice president for Music RX, a group of musicians who perform monthly at nursing homes and hospitals in the area. She is a member of the Golden Peacock School of Dance and achieved first place overall at the Dance Platinum Regional and at the Star Quest World Dance Finals for both solo and trio performances.

Cheryl values opportunities for per-sonal growth. “There is always room to improve. In every activity that I do,

from dance to being involved in Key Club, I know that there is always room to grow,” she said. “This keeps me motivated and engaged. I strive toward improving not only myself but also those around me.”

The one thing Cheryl will trea-sure the most about her high school experience is, “The relationships that I had in high school with my friends, family and teachers. Over these four years, I had the chance to get to know my teachers and spent time with them not only in the class-room but also at competitions and different events. Being part of the Mustang community is unforget-table, an experience that I will trea-sure forever.”

Cheryl will attend the University of Pennsylvania in the fall and study in the Wharton School of Business, where she plans to study operations and information management, as well as finance. Congratulations on your accomplishments and leader-ship skills, and good luck as you con-tinue to benefit the world.

T he summer movie season ar-rived a bit early this year with Batman v Superman: Dawn of

Justice. This film is a continuation of the 2013 film Man of Steel. During that movie, we discovered Superman, and in its final act, we saw the destruction that a godlike creature and his enemies could wreak on this world.

In telling the next act, the concern was that this sequel would descend into a metaphorical malaise of God vs. Man rhetoric. To be fair, there is some of that, but it is used only to set up the motivations of each character. Super-man is the god from another world fac-ing a suspicious public that is skeptical of his appearance. What if he were to turn bad? Should there be safeguards? Could safeguards even be created?

On the other hand, there is the Bat. He is just a man named Bruce Wayne, with no superpowers except an unlim-ited bank account and years of physi-cal and investigative training. Bat-

man’s skepticism is deeply rooted in the destruction caused by Superman’s attempt to save Metropolis from usurp-ers. That attempt left buildings in ru-ins and lives shattered.

Superman’s appearance and the destruction it left behind was the end of innocence. With a city shattered in clouds of dust, the 9/11 allegory is strong, and at times, it is a difficult reminder of reality. Director Zach Sny-der handles those opening moments re-spectfully, and for this fictional world, he uses them to build Wayne’s motiva-tion and hatred of beings more than man. While the politicians debate, Bat-man acts.

Running concurrent to his planned destruction of Superman, Batman is investigating the smuggling of kryp-tonite, an alien leftover from the first film. Also trying to get his hands on this powerful metal is Lex Luthor (Jes-se Eisenberg), owner and CEO of the massive conglomerate LexCorp. Luthor is playing a long game, and part of his plan is to take the two top heroes in his region and pit them against each other. Ultimately, while our two heroes are battling it out, Luthor, as the master villain, is looking to create even more destruction for Metropolis.

This movie is far more a Batman film than a Superman one, which ex-plains his top billing in the title. Fans will get to see cleverly inserted origin pieces, which are similar in scope to the Dark Knight series, but those films are not part of this universe. Fans will feel the inner turmoil and complexity of Ben Affleck’s version of Batman. There was a great deal of criticism of that

casting choice, all misplaced. This is an older and somewhat wiser Batman, but also one carrying a great deal of pain. Affleck not only holds his own to the mantle of those Batmans who came before, but in many ways, he is forging a new variation that may end up stron-ger than previous incarnations.

The work of Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman is similar to Affleck’s. While not a featured character in the film, her mysterious role throughout and her work in the finale bring great optimism for future movies.

Of course, there is no doubt that this is a buildup to a Justice League movie. This creation was different than The Avengers but no less organic. It is beautifully filmed with fantastic ac-tion, but that is not what puts it near the top of superhero films. Instead, it is the emotional development and strong acting by Affleck that bring life to a traditionally wooden Superman. After Man of Steel, my interest in a sequel was tepid. After Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, the next chapter can-not get here soon enough.

“Nobody can go back and start a new beginning, but anyone can start today and make a new ending.”

– Maria Robinson

If you are considering getting a divorce or are getting divorced, you should know that a court can order you and/or your

spouse to take a course for a variety of reasons. Many Family Law courts require parties of a child to take a Parenting Education and Family Stabilization Course, also

known as a “parenting” course. Some courts only require the parties to take a “parenting” course if custody of a child is a contested issue.

These courses are helpful for divorcing parents or parties involved in a suit af-fecting a parent-child relationship (SAP-

CR). Frequently, parties experience conflict re-garding access, visitation, exchange of a child and custody of a child. These courses help in providing an understanding of a child’s perspec-tive in these situations, avoiding conflict, how to handle conflict and methods of communicating with the other party and the child that are pro-ductive and healthy, not destructive and damag-ing.

The course’s content can vary to some extent, so it is important to check with your attorney which course is the best

for your situation. If you have a hearing fre-quently, a judge will order you to attend a spe-cific course. Many of the courts post the par-enting course they require on their websites. Some courts require parties to attend courses in person, while others allow parties to participate in online courses. Courses can be from four to eight hours or more depending on what the court requires. The courses provide a “certificate” upon completion of the course that needs to be filed with the court.

Courts can order Anger Management Courses, Battering Intervention and Prevention programs and a course of

treatment with a mental health professional in accordance with section 153.010 of the Texas Family Code. This can be very helpful to redirect parties toward healthier mental health to make a significant difference in their own lives and that of their children. Make sure that whatever course you take is approved by your court.

Q: WHAT ARE PET ALLERGIES?

People with pet allergies have super-sensitive immune systems that react to certain proteins in the pet’s dander, saliva or urine. These proteins are called aller-gens. Allergens can collect on fur, walls, clothing and other surfaces. The allergens will not lose their strength for a long time, sometimes for several months.

Q: WHAT ARE SYMPTOMS OF PET ALLERGIES?

When dog and cat allergens land on the mucous membranes that line the eyes and nose, the membranes begin to swell and itch, causing a stuffy nose and inflamed eyes. A lick or a scratch from a pet can cause the skin area to become red. If allergen levels are low or sensitivity is minor, symptoms may not appear until several hours after contact with the pet.

Q: WHAT ARE SOME TREATMENT OPTIONS?

If your allergies are severe, the best prevention is to avoid contact with cats or dogs and their dander, and avoid visit-ing people with pets. If you must come in

contact with pets that you are allergic to, many over the counter products, such as Benadryl or Zyrtec, contain antihistamines that can be very helpful in treating pet al-lergies. Decongestants, such as Sudafed and Claritin-D, can also be very helpful in reducing pet allergy symptoms.

Q: HOW DO I KEEP A PET, EVEN THOUGH I HAVE AN ALLERGY?

First, let us talk about the benefits of owning a pet. Studies have found that owning pets can alleviate stress, dep-ression, lower blood pressure and mini-mize the risk of heart disease. Pets are especially beneficial to children since they teach responsibility, compassion and allow for an emotional connection for children with impaired social interac-tions. Interestingly, exposing children to pets at a very young age actually re-duces the chances of developing allergies later on. So, if you decide a pet would be good for you and your family but are con-cerned about allergies, then consider fish, snakes, turtles or a “hypoallergenic” dog or cat. Certain dog and cat breeds have little to no dander.

Who doesn’t love adorable little pups and their sweet little kisses, puppy breath and soft, cuddly fur? That is until the itchy, watery eyes, itchy skin, runny nose and sneezing appear. Pet allergies can range from a mild inconvenience to downright misery. Below, we’ll discuss some common questions regarding pet allergies.

If you decide to keep a pet that causes you to suffer from allergies:

• Bar the pet from the bedroom, keep-ing the door closed and the bedroom clean. You spend from one-third to one-half of your time there.

• Because animal allergens are sticky, you must remove the animal’s favorite furniture, remove wall-to-wall carpet and scrub the walls and woodwork. Keep sur-faces throughout the home clean and un-cluttered. Bare floors and walls are best.

• If you must have carpet, select ones with a low pile, and steam clean them fre-quently. Better yet, use throw rugs that can be washed in hot water.

• Wear a dust mask to vacuum. Vac-uum cleaners stir up allergens that have settled on carpet and make allergies worse. Use a vacuum with a high efficien-cy particulate air (HEPA) filter if possible.

• Forced-air heating and air-condi-tioning can spread allergens through the house. Cover bedroom vents with dense filtering material like cheesecloth.

• Adding an air cleaner with a HEPA filter to central heating and air condition-ing can help remove pet allergens from the air. The air cleaner should be used at least four hours per day. Another type of air cleaner that has an electrostatic filter will remove particles the size of animal al-lergens from the air. No air cleaner or filter will remove allergens stuck to surfaces, though.

• Washing the pet every week may re-duce airborne allergens but is of question-able value in reducing one’s symptoms.

• Have someone without a pet allergy brush the pet outside to remove dander, as well as clean the litter box or cage.

The second annual Derby Day Party will be held on Saturday, May 7th at Sa-fari Texas. Funds raised from the event will benefit Reining Strength Therapeutic Horsemanship, a 501(c)3 organization, and its programming for individuals with special needs.

The Reining Strength team estimates that over 90,000 Fort Bend County resi-dents could benefit from therapeutic horsemanship programming. The servic-es are appropriate for people of all ages with a wide variety of common diagno-ses, including anxiety, autism spectrum disorders, cerebral palsy, CVA or stroke, Down syndrome, intellectual and learn-ing disabilities, multiple sclerosis, trau-matic brain injury and many others.

“We have developed special relation-ships with local physical therapy groups and the Boys and Girls Club of Fort Bend County. Clients from each of these di-verse audiences have unique and spe-cific needs that a therapeutic horseman-ship program can effectively address,” said Heather Hernandez, M.Ed., execu-tive director of Reining Strength. “Re-cently, a therapeutic riding client’s moth-er was sharing with us how impressed she was that for the first time, her seven-year-old son is able to sit up on his own in a chair and stand upright while walk-ing. Both she and the child’s therapists attribute this success to riding.”

The second annual Derby Day Party marks a new tradition the organization seeks to build upon as it grows and fur-ther establishes its roots in Fort Bend County, having celebrated their first anniversary as a 501(c)3 in December 2015.
