NAIFA-DALLAS PROGRAMThursday | May 28, 2015 | Prestonwood Country Club

NAIFA-Dallas and our 2014-15 Program Sponsor are proud to present:

Judy HobermanPresident, Selling In A Skirt

Succeeding in Today’s MarketEveryone is in sales, whether you are providing a product or service, managing a team or selling yourself.  In order to succeed in today’s market, we need to recognize what our businesses are built on.  That includes

sales, communication and relationships. Communication comes in many forms and is different between genders, generations and industries.  In order to increase sales and build our business relationships, we must learn the proper way to communicate with each other. Sales are based on conversations. Building relationships begins with asking questions, and listening will cement those relationships.

We live in a very noisy world so standing out and being unique will be a way to increase your bottom line. What is it that makes you stand out from your competitors? Why would people want to do business with you? Learning how to network with intention will give you some of the proven strategies to build new centers of influence and nurture existing ones and will make a huge impact on your bottom line.

What you will learn:

• The basic communication differences between men and women.

• The importance of recognizing these differences and how to embrace and use those differences as assets.

• The value of asking the right questions and listening to the responses.

• The importance of building relationships in business.

• How to stand out in a business world where everyone is fighting for the same dollars.

Good communication leads to successful relationships that will have a great impact on the success in your business.

Judy Hoberman, President of Selling In A Skirt, has created a suite of workshops, seminars and coaching programs that take the negativity out of selling. Her 30 years in sales has given her both the knowledge and sense of humor about the gender differences that we should all understand and embrace instead of feeling unable to communicate. Judy’s humorous stories about how men and women sell, manage, recruit and supervise differently will enlighten you in learning how both genders can support each other’s successes in a more productive way.

Judy is the author of Selling In a Skirt, Famous Isn’t Enough, and Pure Wealth, business books for professional women, sales executives, and entrepreneurs. She is the host of a weekly radio show on Tough Talk Radio called “Selling In A Skirt” and is also featured as “The Gender Expert” on Fox News Radio. She has appeared on CNN Headlines, ABC, CBS, CW33, and Good Morning Texas and has contributed articles to Small Business Trends, Dallas Morning News, Dallas Business Journal, Texas CEO Magazine and appeared on the cover of Exceptional People Magazine.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGEGrover Brillhart | 2014-15 NAIFA-Dallas President

We had an excellent day at Lone Star Park on Friday, April 24th, as we participated in the Race for CE. Many people took advantage of the opportunity to earn five hours of classroom CE, including the required Ethics course. Daniel

Anderson, CFM did an excellent job of presenting the brand new NAIFA-Texas ethics class, and it was a good discussion that was had on many ethics related topics. Thank you Dan!

The weather was a little rough and races were delayed, but we definitely needed the moisture to bring our area lakes to nearer their full levels. The presenters and topics were: Greg Holmgren, CLU, ChFC of New York Life – “Designing Business Life Insurance Solutions”; Andra Grava, CLU, RHU of The DI Center – “Not Your Father’s Disability Insurance”; and Joe Kane, RFC, CLU, ChFC of Personal Economics Group – “Life Insurance – Choosing Wisely”. They definitely filled my brain to the full mark. I had new products and concepts presented to me, refresher on old products and concepts, and a fun-filled day. Thank you so much to those who sponsored, presented, and just participated in making this a great day.

A BIG THANK YOU to the Race Committee for making this all come together on time -- Brian Craig, Ruth Shannon, Joe Chenoweth, Tom DuRoss, Christina Johnson, John Norman, Danny O’Connell, Cheri Stanwix, and as always, Pam Thompson and Karen True of the NAIFA-Dallas office.

NAIFA-Dallas is looking to grow our membership, and NAIFA National has introduced a new program that NAIFA Texas is supporting as is every NAIFA association in the great state of Texas. If you are licensed less than three years in the business, or know someone who is, that person has the opportunity to receive their first year’s dues for FREE if they join between now and September 30th (see page 11). This is a great opportunity to recruit new members into our association; think of the first few years you were a member and what NAIFA did for your career. The opportunity is there for us to build a new group of members and show them the ropes and help them grow into this wonderful profession.

I had the opportunity to attend a Town Hall meeting with Texas State Representative Jodie Laubenberg recently. It was an opportunity to hear what is going on in the legislature in Austin.

There are several big things going on that have an effect upon our industry. Representative Laubenberg is currently sponsoring three different pieces of legislation that will keep Telehealth in force in Texas. She is approaching the bill for the sake of getting inexpensive coverage in place for children. She gladly let me share with her how those very same goals can be enhanced by allowing Telehealth to stay in force as an employee benefit offered by the employer. She has a much better understanding of how Telehealth will allow employees to be more productive and not have to take off as much time to deal with simple office visits for common ailments.

The Golf Committee is coming together and starting to get the details for this fall’s tournament. We are looking for people who would like to assist in any way possible. We have a good start and just need to wrap up the final details. If you have an opportunity to serve, please call the NAIFA-Dallas office at 972.991.2364.

Serving in any capacity is always a way to show your appreciation of any organization. We just had our election of new board members, and they will be starting to serve soon. Please be sure to say “Thank You” to them as you see them around in meetings.

Volunteers are the life of any organization as we all know, so let’s improve our lives and step up to get things going forward. Karen and Pam do a wonderful job of keeping us on track and hitting deadlines as required, but it would not all get done without the volunteer efforts. I say a big hearty Thank You to all who have served as volunteers over the years.

NAIFA is the premier organization for the insurance industry. NAIFA’s membership is composed of agents from all aspects of the insurance industry. No matter what your particular line of business is, our mission is to serve our client base, to be available in the event of a claim, no matter how small or large. Where would the families, the children, the businesses and employees be without our services? The public would not be as well educated as they are if they only had order-takers and not educators. That is why it is so important to spend time in the classroom sharpening our axes so that we can be as efficient as possible in our services. Let’s do what is necessary and keep our clients informed!

May is Disability Insurance Awareness Month

About the CampaignDisability insurance is the most overlooked of the major types of insurance. That’s likely because many people think a disabling illness or injury will never happen to them. But according to a Life Happens survey, a person has a 3 in 10 chance of suffering a disabling illness or injury that would keep them out of work for three months or more during their career.

That’s why each May Life Happens coordinates Disability Insurance Awareness Month. This campaign offers you the perfect opportunity to talk to people in your community about their disability insurance needs – at a time when it may already be on their minds. Life Happens offers you a wide range of tools and resources to make that job easier. Explore the different sections to find which materials are right for you.

Campaign MaterialsLife Happens has created these resources to help you with your marketing and outreach efforts during Disability Insurance Awareness Month. CLICK on any of the resources below for more details:

NAIFA-Dallas to Present Class Beginning July 13, 2015NAIFA is proud to announce a partnership with the College for Financial Planning and a new, dynamic and interactive curriculum for NAIFA’s Life Underwriter Training Council FellowSM (LUTCF®) designation.

What is the NAIFA LUTCF?

LUTCF stands for Life Underwriter Training Council Fellow – a long-standing industry designation owned by NAIFA.

NAIFA played a leading role in the creation of the Life Underwriter Training Council in 1947. The establishment of LUTC is one of many points in NAIFA’s history of commitment to practical training for agents and advisors in the field and to the peace of mind of consumers.

The LUTCF designation was established in 1984, and since then more than 50,000 LUTCF designations have been conferred. NAIFA is proud of its long history associated with the LUTCF designation. It has been and will continue to be the proven designation for agents and advisors across the country. The underlying principle of providing valuable industry-specific training to NAIFA members has never been more important for the industry than it is today.

How is the NAIFA LUTCF Changing?

For years, the NAIFA LUTCF program was administered on behalf of NAIFA by The American College. That partnership is ending, effective July 1, 2015.

However, NAIFA has entered in a new partnership with the College for Financial Planning to re-launch the program. Information regarding the new curriculum, requirements for completion, pricing and other details about the new NAIFA LUTCF® program can by found by CLICKING HERE.

I found it was really easy to establish a relationship with our elected Representative. We just have to keep in mind they’re our neighbors who happen to be working in Washington and they want to hear what their neighbors have to say.

Studies show that producers who regularly offer Disability Insurance to their clients also sell more life insurance than those who don’t. Almost 50% more according to a survey conducted by a large mutual company; surprisingly, less than 10% of producers claim to regularly offer DI. Just saying…

Mean MomsEditor’s Note: All moms are mean for a reason. As I grew into an adult, I knew why my Mom was mean. I became a mean Mom too!

Melissa, David and Derek, now that you are old enough to understand the logic that motivates a parent, I want you to know that:

I loved you enough... to ask where you were going, with whom, and what time you would be home.

I loved you enough... to insist that you save your money and buy a bike for yourself even though I could afford to buy one for you.

I loved you enough... to be silent and let you discover that your new best friend was a creep.

I loved you enough... to make you go pay for the bubble gum you had taken and tell the clerk, “I stole this yesterday and want to pay for it.”

I loved you enough... to stand over you for two hours while you cleaned your room, a job that should have taken 15 minutes.

I loved you enough...to let you see anger, disappointment and tears in my eyes. Children must learn that their parents aren’t perfect.

I loved you enough... to let you assume the responsibility for your actions even when the penalties were so harsh they almost broke my heart.

But most of all, I loved you enough... to say NO when I knew you would hate me for it. Those were the most difficult battles of all. I’m glad I won them, because in the end you

won, too. And someday when your children are old enough to understand the logic that motivates parents, you will tell them...

Was your Mom mean? I know mine was. We had the meanest mother in the whole world!

While other kids ate candy for breakfast, we had to have cereal, eggs, and toast.

When others had a Pepsi and a Twinkie for lunch, we had to eat sandwiches and fruit.

And you can guess our mother fixed us a dinner that was different from what other kids had, too.

Mother insisted on knowing where we were at all times. You’d think we were convicts in a prison. She had to know who our friends were, and what we were doing with them. She insisted that if we said we would be gone for an hour, we would be gone for an hour or less.

We were ashamed to admit it, but she had the nerve to break the Child Labor Laws by making us work. We had to wash the dishes, make the beds, learn to cook for ourselves, vacuum the floor, do laundry, empty the trash and all sorts of cruel jobs. I think she would lie awake at night thinking of more things for us to do.

She always insisted on us telling the truth,

the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.

By the time we were teenagers, she could read our minds. Then life was really tough!

Mother wouldn’t let our friends just honk the horn when they drove up. They had to come up to the door so she could meet them.

While everyone else could date when they were 12 or 13, we had to wait until we were 16.

Because of our mother, we missed out on lots of things other kids experienced. None of us have ever been caught shoplifting, vandalizing other’s property nor we were ever arrested for any crime. It was all her fault.

Now that we have left home, we are all educated, honest adults. We are doing our best to be mean parents just like Mom was.

I think that is what’s wrong with the world today. It just doesn’t have enough mean moms.
