“We cherish too, the Poppy red

Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in service of the United States of America. Three years after the Civil War ended, on May 5, 1868, Maj. Gen. John A. Logan established Decoration Day as a time for the nation to decorate the graves of the war dead with flowers. He declared that Decoration Day should be observed on May 30. It is believed that date was chosen because flowers would be in bloom all over the country.

It was not until after World War I, however, that the day was expanded to honor those who have died in all American wars. In 1971, Memorial Day was declared a national holiday by an act of Congress. It was then also placed on the last Monday in May.

The National Moment of Remembrance encourages all Americans to pause wherever they are at 3 p.m. local time on Memorial Day for a minute of silence to remember and honor those who have died in service to the nation. T.S. Eliot wrote that, “April is the cruelest month,” and many of us here agree. April teases with a bright spot of warmth – and then yanks the chain right back into damp misery of clumpy, solid rain.

So, we are grateful to turn the calendar page to May, and welcome May baskets, the opening of fishing, yard clean up and starting the garden, Memorial Day, welcoming back our migratory neighbors, and the Demmer’s own Spring Fling.

Thanks to several volunteers helping on special projects, we’ve been doing our own spring cleaning, weeding, and organizing at the library. Hopefully you’ll notice a few additions, thanks to the generous Mead-Witter grant and the financial support of the Friends of the Library. Our other “gardening” plans include meeting with the Town, the Historical Society, and the engineering firm to start working on shared plans for growing our library services and community spaces.

We’re excited to welcome back our summer residents and visitors. I hope to see many of you soon, whether in the library, at Spring Fling, at the special programs we have planned in May, or all of the above! Welcome, spring!

From the Director’s Chair…

“Cheechako Sunrise, Sourdough Sunset” Homesteading in Alaska

presented by Lanna & Don Langdok

Wednesday, June 3rd

7:00 p.m. at the TLCFA

The Langdok's move to Anchorage, Alaska in 1969 was a daring and gutsy decision on

the part of this young Wisconsin couple with a baby daughter. It wasn't long before

exciting and unexpected challenges started to shape and mold their character; from

finding a dead body, dealing with airplane crashes and police department murders to

'homesteading' in a log cabin with no electricity or water!

A Book signing will follow the presentation and concessions will be available for

purchase. For more information please call the Demmer Library 715-546-3391.

Three Lakes School Students Read to Support the Library Building Campaign

The students of the Three Lakes School are excited about the plans for expanded space and youth activities at the Demmer Library. They showed their enthusiasm for reading and the Library by participating in a Read-A-Thon. Students in Kindergarten through Eighth Grade solicited pledges from friends and relatives for each page or book read in the month of February. They presented more than $700 to Library Director Erica Brewster at the school Citizenship Assembly. This was the first of what hopefully will be an annual Read-A-Thon celebrating Dr. Seuss's Birthday and Valentine's Day. The current Library has very cramped space for students and Young Adults. They are looking forward to having more space of their own for reading, using computers, building with Legos and participating in other afterschool and summer programs. A big "Thank You" to the students, the teachers, and administrators for their support of the Demmer Building Campaign. You are an inspiration to all of us. Together we can make great things happen!

Good News from the Demmer Library Building Campaign:

• We have successfully raised 1/3 of our goal for the Demmer Library Expansion and Renovation thanks to people like you. • Attractive book bags designed by students at the Three Lakes Elementary School are available for $10 each at the Library

to help support the building campaign.

• The Three Lakes Public Library Foundation dedicates all funds received directly to the Demmer Library Building Fund. It is locally administered by volunteers.

The 501c(3)Three Lakes Public Library Foundation is accepting donations including cash, appreciated stocks, bonds, mutual funds, and IRA distributions.

Pick up a brochure and donation card at the library, or use the form below. Please call Erica Brewster (715-546-3391) or Vicki Reuling (715-546-8032) for more information. Your contribution will help us open a new chapter for the Demmer Library! Thank you for your support!
