Meet the Borsman’sby Shannon Chaput

This month I interviewed one of our newest families here at Open Door. The Borsmans recently moved up here from Fayetteville, West Virginia where most of Simeon’s family is. He comes from a large family of nine siblings and they were all homeschooled. Carrie, formerly a Steere - daughter of Joan & Phil, homeschools their three girls and breeds and trains dogs out of their home. She has become a very active part of Momtourage and recently joined our Connections and Healing Teams. Simeon has just joined the teaching team in our Kids Ministry. The Borsmans have jumped right into life here attending Firestarters, Parent’s Night, and are signed up for Keep Your Love On. They are also heading up our new adventure, playing Ultimate Frisbee on Sunday afternoons! They have been a wonderful addition to our Open Door Family and we are so happy to have them.

Tell us about yourselves...Simeon and I met in college. We’ve been married for 8 years and have 3 daughters. Lenah 6, Myleigh 4, and Lila 3. We just moved to the area from West Virginia where Simeon’s family is from. The last 4 years that we were there Simeon worked in the tree removal business. We had been praying about a job change for a while and last November we felt led to take a job in South Bend. This was about a week before my mom, Joan Steere (who attends here at Open Door), had her car accident. The next couple of months held a lot of transitioning for us. When my mom had her accident we rushed up to Michigan to be with her, back to WV to pack up our lives in a week, and then up to Michigan again for Simeon to start his new job and begin

searching for a house. God has provided everything and everyone we needed right in the nick of time through all of it. Family provided temporary housing for us while we looked for a new home. God gave us a beautiful home in Niles which we moved into on April 1st. We’re settling in now, I’ve been able to keep my dog breeding and training business going through all of this. We took a couple of breaks from home schooling though our various moves in the last few months but we’re back to that now as well. The girls love it here and love being close to their “MaMa” and “Papa” (my parents). We know that God has not revealed all the reasons He had us move here yet, but we look forward to finding out what those are.

What do you like to do for fun?Simeon: Playing frisbee, four-wheeling, figuring out how to improve anything mechanical.Carrie: Training/playing with dogs, playing any kind of game or sport. As a family, we love going on hikes, going to the beach, going on bike rides, out to eat, to movies etc. We are a very fun loving family!

What brought you to Open Door? This has been my parents’ church while we were in WV and when we visited we came here. So we naturally started coming when we moved here. As we’ve come more consistently, we’ve both come to love so much about it that we feel like there’s no need to look for anything else! The biggest thing that we appreciate about Open Door is that the Spirit is allowed to flow and speak here. I love that people here are free to speak what the Lord is saying to them directly and minister to each other what the Spirit is guiding them to do. It was very hard to find a church in WV that wasn’t very traditional or even believed that God speaks today.

What are some of your hopes and dreams for the future? We have a dream of having a ministry based farm, where we could minster to youth and provide a safe place for them. Where they could learn to know God, experience the work and rewards of farming and connect with family, animals, and the outdoors.

Can you tell us about a time when God did something remarkable?Haha, Nope!Yeah, only like I just can’t decide which one to share...When He spared my Mom’s life? or when He spared my Husband’s life? or maybe I should go with something a little less scary? There’s lots of those too...I think I’m gonna go with Simeon’s life cause maybe less people have heard about that.

January 31, 2011. While Simeon was logging in West Virginia he was working by a huge pile of stacked logs, he was cutting some branches off some logs at the end of the stack when one shifted and caused the entire stack to break loose and start rolling. He threw his saw and started running but rolling logs are much faster, and some were bouncing off each other and even flying over his head. He got trapped between 2 logs (crushing his hips

sideways to about 3 inches wide) and was stuck while more logs were still rolling towards him. Watching his death roll towards him with nothing he could do, he said later all he wanted was to reach his cell phone so he could call me to say “goodbye, I love you.” At the last second one log hit the end of the one trapping him and knocked it loose just enough for him to drop down into a space beneath the logs while the rest of the stack rolled over top of him. When he could hear the logs had stopped rolling he pulled himself up with his arms, he couldn’t move from the waist down. His 2 co-workers were so stunned to see him crawling out alive after disappearing under a log roll (no one comes out of those alive) they were at a total loss at how to proceed to get him help. They should have had him air-lifted then and there but there was no cell signal. Simeon had to instruct them on how to get him into the truck and get him warm to keep him from going into shock. He says his vision was getting dark and closing in as he was about to go unconscious, but he asked God to keep him awake to get help and his vision immediately cleared up. He was able to call me to tell me to get to the hospital ASAP. I had Lenah who was 2, Myleigh was 7 months old and we just found out I was pregnant with Lila. Family came to get the kids and I got to the

hospital over an hour away as quickly as I could. At the first small hospital they took him to, they apparently didn’t believe what he said and they made him drink all kinds of fluid and rolled him all over the place to take x-rays. These procedures had an extremely high chance of killing him since his bladder was ruptured and his pelvis was broken. But again God was keeping him alive despite this all. After about 4 hours, when the doctors finally realized the extent of the damages, they came in to read him the results of the x-rays: Pelvis broken in 4 places, ruptured bladder, cracked vertebrae, damaged kidney, internal bleeding etc. They called in a helicopter and had him transported to Charleston within minutes. There, they had a team of doctors who quickly got him stabilized and early the next morning performed surgery to repair his bladder and put his pelvis back together (held together with an external fixator). He remained in the ICU for 3 days and was able to come home after about 2 weeks, confined to a hospital bed and then a wheel chair for 3 months. The doctors at Charleston hospital were amazed at his condition and speed of recovery, considering he was a crush injury and everything he’d been through. In accidents like these, you die. If somehow you survive you should be maimed or at least in a wheelchair for life. It was clear God wanted him alive. For me, staying with him in Charleston while going through morning sickness, having 2 toddlers, a sudden loss of all income, and having come so close to being a widow, I can’t remember a time when I so strongly felt God’s presence with me. He held me, he gave me a peace through Simeon’s 5 hour surgery when I felt like I was going to lose him. He provided for us financially with gifts stuffed in our mailbox just days after the accident. And somehow He gave me strength to take care of everyone who needed me to be strong for months following. These’s so much more to this story that would take too long to write. But one more thing I feel like I should add, is that God showed me in a dream the year before the accident, what was going to happen. But the meaning was hidden from me until the day I got the phone call that Simeon had been in an accident. The minute I hung up the phone God showed me my dream again, and the purpose of that dream was to show me, He knew, He had us, and there would be complete healing. Don’t think that because something bad happens that God didn’t know it would happen, or

that He somehow lost control of it. Through this whole thing I could feel the pain in His heart for us, yet His ultimate control was very apparent. The awfulness of the situation was replaced with fond memories of the Lord’s presence. And every year on January 31st we celebrate Simeon’s “Bonus life” because the Lord restored what the enemy tried to steal. God wants Simeon on this earth longer, so watch out enemy!

Kids MinistryMay Updateby Jen Chaput

“Every good and perfect gift is from God.” James 1:17 NIRV

God is SUCH a good Dad! He loves us and truly cares about what we care about. While we rejoice in His amazing provision of what we need, we also know that He loves to bless us just because! It blesses our hearts to bless our kids and God also considers it a joy to do so.

Fred Rogers once said, “Play is often talked about as if it is a relief from serious learning. But for children, play is serious learning. Play is really the work of childhood.”

One of the most cherished names that God gives us is “His children.” I think that there is much to be gleaned from this status we are given. We are heirs, yes! And we are also beloved little ones in His eyes. When we battle with the weapons of spiritual warfare, they are different from the “grown up” weapons the world is accustomed to...hate, fear, violence.

But with God, our love, patience, kindness, gentleness, and JOY are powerful weapons against the enemy. These things are given as a gift from the Spirit within us as God’s kids. There is no joy in “works,” but what is gifted is truly something to rejoice in!

Our kids can teach us much about living with these weapons activated daily. So we will be rejoicing this month with our kids as we celebrate our place in the Kingdom and the creative, silly, lovely, and fantastic ways we can relate to our God.

If you would like to take part in blessing our kids, we feel the Lord moving us to bring them special gifts as part of our May 3rd lesson. Contact Jen (317.697.8855) for details on how to partner with God in this way.
