Dear  Gardner  Community,  !It  is  unbelievable  that  the  end  of  school  is  so  near!    This  will  be  our  last  newsletter  of  the  year.  !We  are  very  excited  to  announce  that  we  have  an  interim  Assistant  Principal  until  the  end  of  the  year.    Please  help  us  welcome  Joe  Kolda  to  our  school!  !The  fourth  grade  students  went  on  a  Eield  trip  to  Sacramento  and  were  able  to  visit  the  Capitol  building  and  sit  inside  the  chambers  of  the  State  Senate  and  Assembly.    It  was  great  to  see  how  excited  they  were  to  listen  to  the  presentations  about  our  state’s  history.  !Ms.  Carlos,  one  of  our  3rd  grade  teachers,  applied  for  a  health  and  Eitness  program  through  the  San  Jose  Earthquake  and  was  accepted.    The  program  is  tailored  for  3rd  and  4th  grade  students.    Last  week  the  program  was  launched  with  both  of  those  grades  and  in  Eive  weeks  the  closing  ceremony  will  include  time  with  an  Earthquake  player.  Thank  you  Ms.  Carlos  for  doing  this  for  our  students.  !Looking  forward  to  May,  our  5th  grade  students  will  be  going  to  Science  Camp  on  May  4-­‐8.    I  am  a  huge  supporter  of  outdoor  education.    During  spring  break,  I  visited  the  camp  and  was  given  a  tutor  of  the  entire  facilities.  Our  5th  grade  students  are  going  to  have  an  amazing  time  and  learn  a  lot  about  earth  science.  I  will  be  visiting  the  student  at  camp  during  their  stay  there.  !Our  Open  House  will  be  May  19th  at  6:00  pm  starting  in  the  cafeteria.    Teachers  and  students  are  excited  about  sharing  what  they  have  done  for  the  year.    Please  take  some  time  and  come  visit  your  student’s  classroom.  !Kinder  promotion  will  take  place  on  June  3rd  starting  at  8:30  in  the  cafeteria.    The  5th  grade  promotion  will  be  on  the  last  day  of  school,  June  4th  outside  behind  the  main  building.    More  information  will  be  coming  from  the  perspective  grade  levels.  !I  wish  you  all  a  great  summer  break  and  I  look  forward  to  seeing  you  all  again  on  August  12,  Eirst  day  of  school.  !My  door  is  always  open  and  I  am  here  to  serve  you!  !Warmly,  Daisy  Rojas  “It  takes  a  TEAM  to  education  a  child!”

Academia GardnerQuerida Comunidad Gardner, !¡ Es increíble que el fin de la escuela está tan cerca! Este será nuestro último boletín informativo del año. !Estamos muy entusiasmados de anunciar que tenemos un subdirector interino hasta el final del año. Por favor ayúdenos a darle la bienvenida a nuestra escuela a Joe Kolda! !Los estudiantes de cuarto grado fueron en un viaje a Sacramento y pudieron visitar el edificio de la Capital y sentarse dentro de las cámaras del Senado y la Asamblea. Fue especial ver lo emocionado que estaban los estudiante al escuchar las presentaciones sobre la historia de nuestro estado. !!La Sra. Carlos, uno de nuestras maestras del tercer grado, aplicó para un programa de salud y bienestar con el equipo de Los San José Earthquake y fue aceptada. El programa está diseñado para alumnos de 3 º y 4 º grado. La semana pasada el programa se inició con ambos grados y en cinco semanas que la ceremonia de clausura incluirá tiempo con un jugador del equipo. Gracias Sra. Carlos por hacer esto por nuestros estudiantes. !Mirando adelante a mayo, nuestros estudiantes del 5 º grado irán a un campo de la ciencia del 4 al 8 de mayo. Soy una gran partidaria de la educación al aire libre (outdoor education). Durante las vacaciones de primavera, visite el campamento, ví todo el programa y todas las instalaciones. Nuestros estudiantes del 5 º grado van a tener un tiempo increíble y aprenderán mucho sobre ciencias de la tierra. Visitaré al los estudiantes en el campamento durante su estancia allí. !Nuestra Casa Abierta será el 19 de mayo a 6:00 en la cafetería. Los maestros y alumnos están entusiasmados de compartir lo que han hecho durante el año. Por favor tome tiempo y visite el aula de su hijo. !La promoción Kinder se llevará a cabo el 3 de junio a partir de las 8:30 en la cafetería. La promoción de grado 5 será el último día de escuela, el 4 de junio, a fuera detrás del edificio principal. SECOND GRADE !Thank you to everyone for coming to our Animal Zoo Night! It was great to see everyone and the children were so proud of their hard work. !We are moving into a couple of new units. In reading, we will be comparing and contrasting Cinderella stories. If you have a chance to see the new Cinderella movie that is in theaters, it would be a great connection to what we are doing in the classroom. In writing, we are going to be working on writing letters about the characters in our books. Students will be stating their opinions and reasons to support their opinions. This is very important work and we are excited to see what they can do! !Mrs. Munoz’s and Mrs. Berrocal’s will be going on a field trip on May 8. Please check for the permission slip and send it back as soon as you can. We are also looking for parent chaperones! Let your child’s teacher know if you are available to attend. !As this is the last newsletter of the year, we would like to thank you all for sharing your children with us this year. We have enjoyed seeing how much they have learned and grown.

KINDERGARTEN !We are so proud of all of our students for their growth throughout the year. Thank you for all your hard work and dedication in supporting us this school year. With summer just around the corner, we are finishing up a unit on animals and we continue to work on fluency in our addition and subtraction facts. !Help our students retain all the things they have learned this year by encouraging them to read and learn this summer. Continue to encourage students to read and write their sight words so that they are prepared for the coming year. In order to help our students continue learning, Dreambox and Lexia programs will be available for student use during the summer so students may log on from any computer with internet access. Students are so excited for first grade and are prepared to continue all of their hard work in the coming years. !Kindergarten promotion will take place on June 3rd at 8:15a.m., please join us in celebrating our students’ accomplishments. Thank you for being our students’ biggest cheerleaders and supporters as they embark on their journey toward academic and educational excellence!

FIRST GRADE !Dear Parents, Students in first grade have been working on some of the most important first grade concepts. In math, we recently finished a unit on collecting and analyzing data. We are currently working on identify shapes with equal parts and dividing shapes into halves and fourths. We are also reviewing foundational skills like adding and subtracting tens and ones. Our next unit will focus on nonstandard measurement. In language arts, students are working on identifying elements of fictional texts. They are comparing and contrasting experiences of characters and their adventures. We are also reviewing foundational skills like reading and writing high frequency words, consonant blends, and vowel sounds. In the upcoming week, we will work on asking and answering questions to clarify the meaning of words and phrases in a text. !Please continue to support your child at home by reading with them every evening through our summer break. Practice the foundational skills in both math and language arts, because they are crucial at this point in their educational career. Students will need these foundational skills to be successful in second grade. !Thank you for all of your support this school year! !

GRADO 2 !Muchísimas gracias a todos por su asistencia en nuestra noche familiar de animales. Fue un gusto verlos a todos y los alumnos brillaban de orgullo. !En estas semanas empezamos unos temas nuevos. En lectura estaremos comparando y contrastando cuentos de la Cenicienta de distintas culturas. Si tiene oportunidad de ver la pelicula nueva de “Cinderella” en el cine, sería una buena connección a nuestro tema de lectura. En escritura escribiremos cartas amistosas sobre nuestros cuentos y protagonistas favoritos. Los estudiantes expresarán su opinion y darán razones para apoyar su opinión. Esto es una habilidad importante y estamos emocionados para empezar ya! !Las clases de la Maestra Muñoz y Berrocal saldrán de excursión el día 8 de mayo. Por favor asegure de regresar la hoja de permiso lo mas pronto posible. Comuniquese con la maestra si desea ir de acompañante al paseo. !Como este será el último boletín del año, quisieramos agradecerles la oportunidad de trabajar con su hijo/a. Ha sido un verdadero placer verlos crecer y aprender.

KINDERGARTEN !Estamos tan orgullosos de nuestros estudiantes por todo su desarrollo durante el año escolar. Gracias por todo su esfuerzo y dedicación en apoyarnos este año. Con el verano acercándose, estamos terminando nuestro tema de animales y también seguimos practicando responder sumas y restas con fluidez. Ayúdele a su estudiante para que durante el verano, no se le olvide todo lo que ha aprendido este año. Para que su estudiante este preparado para el año por venir, Sigan leyendo y practicando sus 100 palabras frecuentes. Para que nuestros estudiantes puedan mantener su aprendizaje durante el verano, los programas Dreambox y Lexia estarán disponibles para que todos los estudiantes tengan acceso a practicar lectura y matemáticas de cualquier computadora con internet. Nuestros estudiantes están tan emocionados de su promoción a primer grado y están listos para continuar su esfuerzo académico el próximo año. !La promoción de kínder se llevara acabo el 3 de junio a las 8:15 a.m., por favor acompáñenos para celebrar todos los logros de nuestros estudiantes. PRIMER GRADO !Estimados padres: !Los estudiantes del primer grado han estado trabajando en algunos de los conceptos más importantes del primer grado. En matemáticas terminamos una unidad sobre recolección de datos y análisis de los mismos. Actualmente trabajamos en identificar figuras con partes iguales y dividir figuras por mitad y cuartos. También estamos repasando destrezas fundamentales de sumas y restas con unidades y decenas. En nuestra próxima unidad nos enfocaremos en medir con unidades no comunes. !En lecto-escritura, los estudiantes practican identificar los elementos en un texto de ficción. Ellos comparan y contrastan experiencias de los personajes en una historia. Además, estamos repasando destrezas fundamentales de lectura como leer las palabras de uso frecuente, combinación de consonantes y de vocales. En la próxima semana haremos preguntas y las contestaremos para clarificar el significado de las palabras y frases en un texto. !Por favor, continúen apoyando a su hijo/a en casa leyendo con él/ella durante las vacaciones. Practiquen las destrezas fundamentales de lectura, escritura y matemáticas porque son indispensables para su educación. Los estudiantes necesitarán esas destrezas para tener éxito en segundo grado. !¡Gracias por todo su apoyo este año!

FIFTH GRADE !Our fifth grade students are as busy as ever. We finished our projects on the 13 original colonies and created travel brochures based on our research. Next, we will be comparing and contrasting stories in the same genre. We have chosen to focus our studies on the mystery genre and will be reading many mystery stories in class. !In math, we completed our unit on coordinates on a plane. We learned to plot coordinates on a grid and to plot coordinates based on a rule. We will spend the rest of the year completing projects that will let us review what we have learned about math throughout the year. We will review volume, measurement, plane and three dimensional shapes, multiplication and division of whole numbers, and addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of decimals and fractions. !Finally, next week we will make our long awaited visit to science camp. Thank you for your support in fundraising for this year’s campers, and please continue to support the school’s fundraising efforts for both this year’s and future students.

FOURTH GRADE !In 4th grade we are finishing up the SBAC testing. Thank you very much students for trying your hardest and being patient with all of the testing times. In Math we are learning about decimals more in-depth. In ELA we are choosing our own topics to research and writing a 5 paragraph essay about our topic. In Ms. T and Ms. Shore's classes, we are researching a Mission and creating an art project with it. !We are also trying to raise money for the 5th graders to go to Science Camp because they are still short funds. THIRD GRADE !English Language Arts: We are almost reaching the end of school! The students have been working very hard all year and we are very proud of the progress that they have made. Since there is only a little bit of time left we have to work even harder these last days in order to be prepared for fourth grade. We have been learning to compare and contrast, specifically comparing and contrasting two different texts about the same topic. This week, students will be learning about local government. They will research about the leaders of the city of San Jose and will choose a department of the government that they would like to learn about. After finishing the research project, they will do a presentation in class about what they learned about their department. The next unit will be based on comparing and contrasting the themes, setting and plot of stories written by the same author about the same character. In writing, students will write informative texts and will continue reviewing opinion writing. !Math: We are finishing a unit where the students learned about fractions, how to compare and look for equivalent fractions. During the last days of school we will be working on interpreting information from graphs. The students will use data from measurements using rulers to make line plots marking appropriate units. Also, we will be reviewing multiplication and division strategies to solve problems. !All of the students should keep practicing their multiplication tables until 10’s at home. It is very important that they memorize them before starting fourth grade. !It has been a pleasure teaching your children this year. Thank you for your support and understanding.

TERCER GRADO !Artes de lenguaje: ¡Ya estamos llegando al final de la escuela! Los estudiantes se han esforzado mucho todo el año y estamos muy orgullos de el progreso que han hecho. Ya que quedan pocos días, tenemos que esforzarnos más para estar preparados para cuarto grado. Hemos estado aprendiendo a comparar y contrastar, espcíficamente comparar y contrastar dos textos diferentes acerca del mismo tema. Esta semana, los estudiantes estarán aprendiendo acerca del gobierno local. Ellos harán una investigación de los lideres de la ciudad de San José y escogerán un departamento del gobierno del que les gustaría aprender. Después de terminar el proyecto de investigación, harán una presentación de lo que aprendieron de su departamento en la clase. La proxima unidad será basada en comparar y contrastar temas, el ambiente, y la trama de cuentos escritos por el mismo autor acerca del mismo personaje, En escritura, los estudiantes estarán escribiendo textos informativos y continuaremos repasando la escritura de textos de opinión. !Matemáticas: Estamos terminando una unidad donde los estudiantes aprendieron acerca de fracciones, como comparar fracciones y buscar fracciones equivalentes. En los últimos días estaremos trabajando en interpretar información en gráficas. Los estudiantes usarán datos de medidas usando reglas para hacer gráficas de líneas marcando unidades apropiadas. También, estaremos repasando estrategías de multiplicación y división para resolver problemas. !Todos los estudiantes deben de seguir practicando las tablas de multiplicación hasta la tabla del 10 en sus casas. Es muy importante memorizarlas antes de empezar cuarto grado. !Ha sido un placer enseñar a sus hijos este año. Gracias por su apoyo y comprensión.

CUARTO GRADO !Estimadas familias,!!En cuarto grado estamos terminando los exámenes estatales SBAC. Gracias a nuestros estudiantes por poner su mejor esfuerzo y por su paciencia durante los exámenes. En matemáticas estamos aprendiendo mas acerca de decimales. En Arte del Lenguaje los estudiantes están eligiendo sus temas para sus reportes de investigación. Al terminar su investigación, ellos tendrán que escribir una composición de al menos 5 párrafos. En la clase de Ms. T y de Ms. Shore también están investigando y creando sus proyectos de las Misiones de California. !Continuamos recaudando fondos para el campamento de 5to grado. Aun nos falta un poco mas de dinero. Si obtenemos dinero extra, será guardado para el campamento del próximo año. QUINTO GRADO !Nuestro estudiantes de quinto grado están muy ocupados. Hemos terminado nuestros proyectos en las 13 colonias originales. Creamos folletos de viajes basado en nuestra investigación. A continuación, vamos a comparar y contrastar las historias del mismo género. Hemos decidido concentrar nuestros estudios sobre género de misterio y leeremos muchas novelas de misterio en la clase. !En matemáticas, hemos completado nuestra unidad en las coordenadas en un plano. Hemos aprendido a trazar las coordenadas de una cuadrícula y para trazar las coordenadas basado en una regla. Pasaremos el resto del año finalización proyectos que nos van a permitir repasar lo que hemos aprendido en matemáticas a lo largo de todo el año. Vamos a examinar el volumen, la medición, el plano y tres formas tridimensionales, la multiplicación y la división de números enteros, y la adición, resta, multiplicación y división de decimales y fracciones. !Por último, la semana que viene vamos a hacer nuestra esperada visita al campamento de ciencias.
