Editor: It is unfortunate that some of our previously popular regular events are having to be cancelled due to lack of support: Stitch and Bitch, Computer Novices, Computer and Writing Groups already cancelled. Ladies Book Club and the Gardening Group are now in jeopardy, and the Drama Group (Ice Players) are suffering due to decrease in support especially men. It must be remembered that these events are organised by volunteers who give up their time for the interest of members. Catering and Bar are also in need of further volunteers. All events and participation by volunteer members is the best way to meet people and make new friends. Remember without members support events cannot take place. Regards, Terry Smith

PRESIDENT’S LETTER I do hope you all had a good Easter, those of you that came to the Coun-

try and Western event enjoyed a great night, at one time there were over

50 people on the dance floor!

While I was in the UK I hear there was great excitement one Thursday

when some firemen turned up to put out a non existent fire, why do I miss all the fun!

This month some of our members are going to Galicia and I'm sure they will have a great

time.

We are trying to think of ways to make Thursday meetings a bit different so on 14th May we

have

Have Hobbit & Beaky coming in to present a free tasting of jams, pickles and oils. You will

be able to buy any product and 10% of their profits will be given to the club. If you have any other event suggestions please let me know. Sue Potter

Congratulations to Jackie and Mac McIntyre who celebrated their 30th Wedding Anniversary.

On Thursday 2nd April, at the club meeting, members congratu-lated them on the event and the club donated a gift of flowers to Jackie, a very useful bottle to Mac and a greeting card signed by many members. Well done to both.

Apply to renew your EHIC If you live in Spain, hold a valid S1 and receive a UK export-able benefit, you can apply to renew your EHIC (European Health Insurance Card) up to six months before its expiry date by calling 00 44 191 279 0575 or by emailing the S1 renewal application form (Doc, 230kb) to [email protected] You can complete the form on line and then save to your documents. Then send as an attachment by email to the address as described in the instructions at bottom of the form. You will quickly get a return email stating your form has been received. Within 2 days you will receive a further email informing you that your new card has been sent and de-tails of any action required if that card is not received.

Regretfully I have to inform members that the Writing Group has not attracted the membership in the way I had hoped - the last two meetings only engaged one member on each occasion. Merle and I will be away over the summer etcetera. Please may I as the Writing Group coordinator therefore offi-cially terminate the Writing Group forthwith. Sorry about this. When we are back in the autumn I may think of approaching the idea in a different way. Best regards, Peter Brookes

Sad News. We’re very sorry to tell you that Frank Hardwick died on Sunday, 29th. March.

Our condolences go to Anne and family.

Franks funeral I would like to thank all the ladies who helped with the making of sandwiches and the preparation of the food for Frank Hardwick's funeral on Good Friday. This is a facility offered by the Club to any member at this time of grief. The Club facilities can be used by any member free of charge, but in the event of a funeral 'Wake' a simple buffet can be organised where club members offer to make sandwiches and the food is then displayed and ready to eat after the funeral service. The only costs for the family is the cost of the food, where no profit is made, plus 25 Euros for the extras needed for the buffet. The costs are therefore kept very low. Many thanks regards Barbara Salisbury

A message by Anne Hardwick: A big thank you to all our lovely friends at ICE who turned up for Frank’s Cremation on Good Friday, who sent beautiful cards, E-Mails and phoned me. Also thank you for contributing to the collection after the Cremation which raised 700 Euros for CUDECA. It’s at times like these that we really appreciate how lucky we are to be members of our wonderful club. A big thank you also to Joan Thompson who stood in for a vicar at the ceremony with help from Maria and also to Barbara and her team of members who produced that magnificent Buffet. I thought you might like a chance to read the lovely poem written by my grandson Zak that my daughter Judi read out at the ceremony so here it is:-

DANCING THROUGH THE DAYS (DEDICATED TO FRANK HARDWICK)

We walk in circles, Avoiding the edge of the platform Waiting to ride the train That build us, break us, and eventually take us. You can sheepishly stroll Or you can dance through the days Embracing the ways That bless us, test us and eventually digest us.

Zak Patrick

Whatever it is This place we are bound Make sure you get your kicks And get up off the ground Because when its all over And you've been here a while It feels a lot nicer.... To look back and smile.

Food For Thought Submitted by Rosemary Ferguson

“On the debris of our lives we build our characters” ~ Emerson

MEMBERS of the Guardia Civil’s traffic department have launched an English-language website to keep the country’s expats informed of what’s happening on the roads. Police officers publish traffic related articles on the site each day, alongside road laws ex-plained and other information. With articles ranging from road offences to tips on how to save at the pumps, more than 7,000 people have already liked the site’s Facebook page. The idea is to provide accurate information to foreign drivers as to both the rules of the road here in Spain, as well as changes to the law that they may not be aware of. The overall concept is very much in its infancy, and are hoping to develop audio and video podcasts shortly to further enhance the user experience. End of the day they want to help residents, visitors and holidaymakers with that little bit of safety when they are on the roads in Spain.” For more information visit www.n332.es

Scam of the Month – May 2015 The Bank Scam If you receive a telephone call from someone purporting to be from your bank, just

put the phone down.

I have been told of an incident where someone called concerning a possible

£1,200 payment made that morning in an Apple store. The person was told to phone the bank on a number provided and ask to be put through to the caller.

He put the phone down and called the 'bank', using the number given, He then told

the person to hand over the Visa cards to a third party courier, who turned up 20 minutes after the call .He was also told to stay on the line. Because he thought he

was dealing with his bank, He followed his instructions.

Be aware of the following:

1. If contacting your bank, only use the numbers shown on your debit card or

cheque book. Not the number that you are given by a third party caller.

2. If you receive a phone call and the person ringing you stays on the line, when

you pick up the phone to make a further call you will still be connected to the

original caller.

Never give Pin or other bank details over the phone to a cold caller, even your

bank will never ask for a PIN. If they want confirmation of your identity they usu-ally ask for specific characters from your password.

PAST EVENTS

Tuesday 17th March - St.Patricks Celebration at the Club

On the night of St Patrick’s many members assembled at the club for the

annual social evening and what a great evening it turned out to be.

Lots of lovely Irish songs were performed and sung by Martin with his gui-

tar accompanied on the piano by the lovely Cindy. Then came Jimmy’s turn who also had us all up singing and dancing to his great guitar playing.

Next Terry regaled us with his repertoire of hilarious Irish songs and Rose

had us all in stitches with her acting and singing.

Congratulations to everyone who took part in this enjoyable event and a big thank you to the

bar staff for their courtesy and dedication, not forgetting Joan who performed the Master of

Ceremony duties with usual aplomb and joined in the singing and dancing with great gusto.

I have been to many ‘Pat’s’ nights at the club and can honestly say it gets more enjoyable

each year. ‘THE CRAIC WAS MIGHTY!’ Submitted by Marcella Clancy

Saturday 4th April - Country and Western Evening with Live Music ‘Yeehaa’ around 80 country folks, some donning a cady, handed in their barking dogs and enjoyed an ace high, hog killin time at the bit house. After handing over our ballast bar dog to bend an elbow with booze, arbuckles or adams ale we settled down for a performance by the ever popular Texas Pearls. The first interval was time for chow a great selection generously supplied by the club folks. The second interval was a demonstration of line dancing by Iris

and Joe who then bushwhacked many two left footed folks to take part, Steve Carter being voted most entertaining. Once again The Texas Pearls were rattling, getting the folks up and stomping the night away. Thanks go to the big gun of the evening, Doug, for the organising a daisy doo. Not forgetting bartender Rob, with his helpful tottie Sue, for manning the busy bar. Trust none of you folks went away suffering with the dreaded barrel fever.

Garden Club - Tuesday 14th April - First Meeting of 2015 The meeting was held in the coffee bar at the Agrojardin, good to welcome new faces and to catch up with our current members and guest. Several gardening problems were raised, for example.............. Too many snails?...(place apple cores on the ground, the snails will gather so you can dispose of them) Too many ants?.....(half water to half washing up liquid, pour this over and ants die instantly). There are always some useful tips offered at our meetings and information gained. Volunteers are still required to tend the flower bed directly in front of the ICE entrance. Maybe if we cannot get volunteers, it was suggested that bark pieces or stones could be a solution..... A discussion then took place regarding future meetings and it was agreed to have the next meeting in the ICE clubhouse with members bringing along some of their own plants or cuttings to swap. Maybe the June meeting could be within the Orchid domes complex in Estepona? So the next Gardening Club Meeting will be held in the ICE clubhouse at 11.00 am Tuesday 12th May. Everybody welcome.

PAST EVENTS

Wednesday 15th April - Ladies and Gents Who Lunch Out Twenty Juliets made a welcome return to the Restaurante Arroyo Hondo which is up the road to Casares in a scenic location, unfortunately a little spoilt due to low cloud. However this did not put the girls off and a special menu ar-ranged by the ever busy Maggie was enjoyed. Thanks Maggie once again for the organising. Looking forward to the next lunches, due to other arranged events will be a little later in the month, on Wednesday

27th May, venue Neli G’s Benevista, see you there. Fifteen Romeos not wanting to travel to far away from the girls made a return visit to the ever popular Restaurante La Torre and once again were not disappointed by the menu selection provided by Pepe and his girls, must be one for the best value in the area, thanks Doug for the organising.

Thursday 16th April - Presentation by Helicopteros Sanitarios We would like to thank Helicopteros Sanitarios for taking time out to update club members of the latest services on some now free of charge, question and answer session, and information about the their new hospital and clinic being built at Puerto Banus. Also the future setting up of a home panic button system. However what was once again disappointing was the number of members exiting the room whilst a presentation was taking place.

Saturday 18th April - Evening Meal Full Of Eastern Promise - Lebanese Restaurant Oriental, Benamara Well we finally made it following change of date due to on going builders work at the res-taurant. What a fantastic venue, the décor must be seen to be appreciated. Doug had arranged a special 3 course menu for club members, this must have been more of Eastern surprises, did we really know what we had ordered? We were entertained during the evening by a belly dancer, George said this made him feel much better (perhaps then George you should get it on prescription!!!) Thanks Doug for the organising.

BOWLING OUR WAY! We meet Monday mornings at Benavista Bowls Club no later than 10.00am for 10.15 start. Late arrivals cannot be guaranteed a game. We normally play 16 ends for just 8€ each, includes hire of woods if required. Dress code is predominately white but the critical factor is footwear, shoes must be smooth soled with no ’pimples or crinkles’. The Man-agement at Benavista strictly apply this rule. Drinks and food available at the bar.

Casares Golf Club 'Roll-Up' We play a twice weekly 'Roll-Up' stableford competition on Tuesdays and Fridays at Casares Golf Club where our members benefit from discounted green fees. Tee off times vary a little throughout the year but if you are

interested arrive around about 08.00. We often have 12 or more players and it's all very friendly, light hearted, (in other words 'cut throat')!! and open to all levels. A sense of humour is well worth putting in the bag! Our annual 'Order of Merit' trophy is awarded to the player with the best ten cards from these 'Roll-Ups'. Keep your eye on the club magazine and web site for details of all activities.

APHORISM: How come it takes so little time for a child who is afraid of the dark

to become a teenager who wants to stay out all night?

Tuesday 21st April - Golf Spring Cup and Lunch The Ice Club golfers played for the Spring Cup this year at Valle Romano. The day was sunny but quite windy, but that didn't deter our members and guests from playing great rounds of golf at what they all said was a very good course. Unfortunately there were only 28 play-ers this year. Following the competition the golfers were joined by another 40 peo-ple for celebration lunch at Venta Choza The staff really look after us there and the food was the best ever. Competition Results: Men's Champion Steve McMurty 38 points 2nd Robert Cole 34 points 3rd Peter Henry 33 points Ladies Champion Aileen Hyde 37 points 2nd Mariska Turkinburg 28 points 3rd Tineke Christensen 28 points D&D Order of Merit Les Jinks 356 points 2nd Peter Henry 348 points 3rd Richard Bearpark Congratulations to all the winners

In Ronda there will be time for lunch and shopping (don’t forget your credit cards!). The trip will end with a scenic coach trip down the Ronda road before returning home. The train that leaves the plain. In the 1890's, Gibraltar's garrison officers wanted to enjoy the campo so a railway was built between Algeciras, Ronda and beyond. The line was originally built between 1890-92 by the Algeciras (Gibraltar) Railway Company Ltd to en-able British garrison officers and families to escape the claustrophobic atmosphere of Gibraltar. Nowadays the train journey makes a lovely day trip through stunning scenery and historic sites. It was a blessed relief to previous travellers, whose wheeled carriages, when they weren't getting stuck in the potholes of the terrible roads, would have to progress at a snail's pace to circumnavigate craters and boulders. Even intrepid horsemen and women found the journey long and hard, with refreshment at the inns either non-existent or of poor quality. An early travel guide warns them, "without fail, take salt, soap and tea, the former being coarse and bad at the inns and the latter, even where it could be ob-tained, undrinkable. Thursday 21st May - Presentation by Richard Hayes on his Works In Ethiopia - After Club Meeting Wednesday 27th May - Ladies and Gents Who Like To Lunch Out Organiser Maggie Whittley. Venue for this month for the Juliets will be Neli G’s café bar Benavista at 1.30pm. Where their passion is creating the most delicious food - always served with a friendly smile! Their menu is bursting with tasty home cooked bites made from only the finest, freshest ingredients. They are committed to producing hand prepared, wholesome dishes at affordable

prices and are open every day from 9am until 4pm.

Exchange of information and living in Spain By Terry Wayne, Partner, Blevins Franks 952 799 752 [email protected] Automatic exchange of information is almost here. What does it mean for you, as an expatriate living in Spain? This loss of financial privacy affects us all. If we live in one country and have assets in another, our information will be shared between countries. Tax authorities will be able to track our wealth like never before. If you are a Spanish tax resident and have, for example, investments in the Isle of Man, or bank ac-counts in Switzerland, or pension funds in the UK, the Spanish tax authorities will receive information about these assets. This will include your name, address, tax identification number (where applicable) and the account and income details. Almost a hundred countries have committed to automatic exchange of information so far. They will follow the Common Reporting Standard developed by the Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). Information will be shared annually between governments, and this will happen automati-cally, for everyone who owns assets outside their country of residence. So not only where tax evasion is suspected. The information to be exchanged includes account balances, interest, dividends and sales proceeds from financial assets. This covers entities like trusts as well as individuals. Reporting financial institutions include bank, certain collective investment vehicles, certain insurance companies, custodians and guardians. They will determine your residence, collect data on your assets and income, and forward it to the Spanish tax authorities. The ‘early adopters’ group, which includes Spain along with the rest of the EU, will start sharing infor-mation in 2017. However they start collecting data next year. Other countries will join the following year. The list includes so called ‘tax havens’ like Switzerland, Channel Islands, Isle of Man, Cayman Islands, Monaco and Singapore. In Europe, the Common Reporting Standard will be implemented through the Administrative Coopera-tion Directive. This provides for automatic exchange of information on interest, dividends, other invest-ment income, sales proceeds from financial assets, income from employment, directors’ fees, life insur-ance, pensions and property. Once the Spanish tax authorities receive this data, they will be able to compare it to your annual in-come and wealth tax returns. They can also compare it to your Form 720, to see if you failed to declare any overseas assets. It is essential you understand which assets and income need to be declared in Spain. As a tax resident you are liable to Spanish tax on your worldwide income, gains and wealth. This includes most income which is also taxed elsewhere, such as UK rental income, and UK private pensions. I often meet British expatriates who believe they can pay UK tax on their private pensions even though they are Spanish residents. This is incorrect. If the Spanish authorities become aware of undeclared pensions it could have serious consequences. Please contact me if you would like clarifi-cation. We still have the right to structure our assets in the most tax efficient way, but you have to be careful to only use arrangements which are compliant in Spain. There are arrangements which can be very effective, but take special-ist to make sure you get it right. EVENTS FOR YOUR DIARY

Just a suggestion for the committee Garden Group - Tip of the month: House plants: Encourage green growth on your house plants by feeding them water mixed with Epsom Salts. Simply add two tablespoons of Epsom salts to one gallon of water and then feed once a month. The magnesium sulphate helps seeds germinate, makes plants leafier, produces more flowers, increases production and deters pests.

APHORISM: A good time to keep your mouth shut is when you're in deep water.

Ex pats or European citizens living in Spain please read if you have children.

New European union directive 650/2012 that comes into force on the 17th of August 2015

makes it essential that you take a look at your Spanish will.

If you reside in Spain and have children unless you say on your will that you wish your estate to be ruled by U.K. law your spouse will not receive your estate.

The new directive was approved in 2012 giving until 2015 to change your will in line with

the directive, but many English people have still not dealt with this.

QUESTION:. A solicitor spoke about the new directive 650/2012, that it is essential that peo-

ple retired in a country different of their country of nationality within the European Union

revise their wills. What is all this about?

ANSWER: This regulation of the EU 650/2012 deals with different things, but the reason

English citizens need to look at their will is that this new Regulation. EU establishes that:

1. When a person dies resident in one country of the European Union but national of another,

the law applicable to his/her inheritance will be the one that he/she has established expressly

in his will and not the one established by the International Norms of each country (which

may be in conflict). This is good news because an English national living in Spain can estab-lish that he/she wishes English Law to rule his/her inheritance and this will avoid any possi-

ble risk of claims from children against the spouse on the basis of the system of obligatory

heirs established in Spanish law, which has always caused worry and concern in the case of

children from previous marriages etc.

2. If a person passes away after the 17th of August of 2015, unless he has said differently in

his will (as explained above), the legislation applicable to his inheritance will be that of his

country of last residence. This is very important for English people living in Spain, because

under Spanish law you cannot leave everything to your wife as 2/3 of the estate have to be

left to children. In other words if you are resident of Spain, have children and do not establish

on your will that you wish English Law (your national law) to rule your inheritance your

Spouse will not be allowed to receive his/her full inheritance as it would contradict the Span-ish rules of obligatory heirs which would be applicable automatically because of the new

regulation.

Consequences:

1. If you have children but have made a will leaving all assets to your spouse, make sure that

you have clearly stated on your will that you wish your national law (English law) to rule

your inheritance. If you have not, you need to speak to a solicitor about this new European

directive and add this statement to your will.

2. If you are married and you have been concerned with possible claims by your spouse’s

children against your estate this risk can be completely removed by your spouse stating on

her/his will that it should be English law that rules the inheritance.

Conclusion:

The new regulation has given much more strength to the testators /testatrix, letting them choose between English or Spanish Law, which is good, but precaution is a must because

under the new regulation if nothing is said and you are a resident in Spain automatically the

law applicable will be Spanish law which does not permit that spouses leave everything to

each other if there are children.

To avoid nasty surprises visit your solicitor and ask if you need to change the wording of

your will due to the new Regulation of the EU. 650/2012.

I remember the cheese of my childhood, And the bread that we cut with a knife, When the children helped with the housework, And the men went to work, not the wife. The cheese never needed a fridge And the bread was so crusty and hot, The children were seldom unhappy And the wife was content with her lot. I remember the milk from the bottle, With the yummy cream on the top, Our dinner came hot from the oven, And not from the fridge; in the shop. The kids were a lot more contented, They didn't need money for kicks, Just a game with their mates in the road, And sometimes the Saturday flicks. I remember the shop on the corner, Where a pen'orth of sweets was sold Do you think I'm a bit too nostalgic? Or is it....I'm just getting old? I remember the 'loo' was the lavy And the bogey man came in the night, It wasn't the least bit funny Going "out back" with no light.

The interesting items we perused, From the newspapers cut into squares, And hung on a peg in the loo, It took little to keep us amused. The clothes were boiled in the copper, With plenty of rich foamy suds But the ironing seemed never ending As Mum pressed everyone's 'duds'. I remember the slap on my backside, And the taste of soap if I swore. Anorexia and diets weren't heard of And we hadn't much choice what we wore. Do you think that bruised our ego? Or our initiative was destroyed? We ate what was put on the table And I think life was better enjoyed. But a huge fact not hereto mentioned In this mushy tale of nostalgic rejoice Is the reason we all “enjoyed” our lot Was that we had NO BLOODY CHOICE Submitted by Bob Culley

Poem for people of a certain age!

Up north, a man decided to wash his sports shirt. He opened the washing machine then stopped, think-ing for a minute. He shouted to his missus, "What setting do I use on the washing machine?" "It depends," she replied. "What does it say on your shirt?" He yelled back, " Manchester United."

A member took his wife to a disco on the weekend. There was a guy on the dance floor giving it big licks: breakdancing, moonwalking, back flips, the works. The wife turned to husband and said: "See that guy? 25 years ago he proposed to me and I turned him down." Husband says: "Looks like he's still celebrating!!!

My mum used to cut chicken, chop eggs and spread butter on bread on the same cutting board with the same knife and no bleach, but we didn't seem to get food poisoning.

AINT THIS THE TRUTH? THOSE WERE THE DAYS - REMEMBER THEM?

Our school sandwiches were wrapped in wax paper in a brown paper bag, not in ice pack coolers, but I can't remember getting e. coli.

Almost all of us would have rather gone swimming in the lake or at the beach instead of a pristine pool (talk about boring), no beach closures then.

We all took PE and risked permanent injury with a pair of Dunlop sandshoes instead of cross-training

athletic shoes with air cushion soles and built in light reflectors that cost as much as a small car. I can't

recall any injuries but they must have happened because they tell us how much safer we are now.

We got the cane for doing something wrong at school, they used to call it discipline yet we all grew up to accept the rules and to honour & respect those folk older than us.

We had 60 kids in our class and we all learned to read and write, do maths and spell almost all the words needed to write a grammatically correct letter......., FUNNY THAT!!

We all said prayers in school and sang the national anthem, and staying in detention after school caught all sorts of negative attention.

I thought that I was supposed to accomplish something before I was allowed to be proud of myself.

I just can't recall how bored we were without computers, Play Station, Nintendo, X-box or 270 digital TV cable stations. We weren't!!

Oh yeah ........ and where was the Benadryl and sterilisation kit when I got that bee sting? I could have been killed!

We played “King of the Hill” on piles of gravel left on vacant construction sites and when we got hurt, mum pulled out the 2/6p bottle of Mercurochrome (kids liked it better because it didn't sting like iodine did) and then we got our bum spanked.

Now it's a trip to the emergency room, followed by a 10 day dose of antibiotics and then mum calls the lawyer to sue the contractor for leaving a horribly vicious pile of gravel where it was such a threat.

To top it off, not a single person I knew had ever been told that they were from a dysfunctional family. How could we possibly have known that? We never needed to get into group therapy and/or anger management classes. We were obviously so duped by so many societal ills, that we didn't even notice that the entire country wasn't taking Prozac! How did we ever survive? AAAAh, those WERE the days!!!! HOW TO START A FIGHT

One year, I decided to buy my mother-in-law

a cemetery plot as a Christmas gift...

The next year, I didn't buy her a gift.

When she asked me why, I replied, "Well, you still haven't used the gift I bought

you last year!"

And that's how the fight started.....

My wife and I were watching Who Wants To

Be A Millionaire while we were in bed.

I turned to her and said, 'Do you want to have

sex?' 'No,' she answered.

I then said, 'Is that your final answer?'

She didn't even look at me this time, simply

saying, 'Yes..'

So I said, "Then I'd like to phone a friend." And that's when the fight started...

My wife and I were sitting at a table at her

high school reunion, and she kept staring at a

drunken man swigging his drink as he sat

alone at a nearby table.

I asked her, "Do you know him?" "Yes", she sighed,

"He's my old boyfriend. I understand he took

to drinking right after we split up those many

years ago, and I hear he hasn't been sober

since."

"My God!" I said, "Who would think a per-

son could go on celebrating that long?"

And then the fight started…

My wife was standing nude, looking in the bedroom mirror.

She was not happy with what she saw and said to me,

"I feel horrible; I look old, fat and ugly. I really need you to pay me a compliment.'

I replied, "Your eyesight's damn near perfect." And then the fight started........

When our lawn mower broke and wouldn't run, my wife kept hinting to me that I should get it

fixed. But, somehow I always had something else to take care of first, the shed, the boat,

making beer.. Always something more important to me. Finally she thought of a clever way

to make her point.

When I arrived home one day, I found her seated in the tall grass, busily snipping away with a

tiny pair of sewing scissors. I watched silently for a short time and then went into the house. I

was gone only a minute, and when I came out again I handed her a toothbrush. I said, "When

you finish cutting the grass, you might as well sweep the driveway."

The doctors say I will walk again, but I will always have a limp.
