One of the great preachers of our time is Dr. Fred Craddock. Craddock

tells a story about vacationing with his wife one summer in one of his favorite

vacationing spots, The Great Smokey Mountains. They were at dinner in a

new restaurant called the Black Bear Inn out from Gatlinburg near the small

community of Cosby. It was very attractive and had an excellent view of the

mountains.

Early in the meal an elderly man approached their table and said, “Good

evening.” Craddock said, “Good evening.”

He said, “Are you on vacation?”

Craddock said, “Yes,” but under his breath he was saying, It’s really

none of your business.

“Where are you from?” he asked.

“We’re from Oklahoma.”

Under his breath but almost audible, Craddock was saying, Leave us

alone. We’re on vacation, and we don’t know who you are. He said, “I’m a

Christian minister.”

The man said, “What church?”

Craddock said, “The Christian Church.”

He paused a moment and said, “I owe a great deal to a minister of the

Christian church,“ and he pulled up a chair and sat down.

Craddock said, “Yes, have a seat.” He tried to make it seem like he

sincerely meant it, but he didn’t. Who is this person?

He said, “I grew up in these mountains. My mother never married,

and the whole community knew it. I was what was called an illegitimate child.

In those days that was a shame, and I was ashamed. The reproach that fell on

her, of course, fell also on me. When I went into town with her, I could see

people staring at me, making guesses as to who was my father. At school the

children said ugly things to me, and so I stayed to myself during recess, and I

ate my lunch alone.

“In my early teens I began to attend a little church back in the

mountains called Laurel Springs Christian Church. It had a minister who was

both attractive and frightening. He had a chiseled face and a heavy beard and

a deep voice. I went to hear him preach. I don’t know exactly why, but it did

something for me. However, I was afraid that I was not welcome since I was,

as they put it, a bastard. So I would go just in time for the sermon, and when it

was over I would move out because I was afraid that someone would say,

‘What’s a boy like that doing in a church?’

“One Sunday some people queued up in the aisle before I could get

out, and I was stopped. Before I could make my way through the group, I felt

a hand on my shoulder, a heavy hand. It was the minister. I cut my eyes

around and caught a glimpse of his beard and his chin, and I knew who it was.

I trembled in fear. He turned his face around so he could see mine and seemed

to be staring for a little while. I knew what he was doing. He was going to

make a guess as to who my father was. A moment later he said, ‘Well, boy,

you’re a child of…’ and he paused there. And I knew it was coming. I knew

I would have my feelings hurt. I knew I would not go back again. He said,

‘Boy, you’re a child of God. I see a striking resemblance, boy.’ The he swatted

me on the bottom and said, ‘Now, you go claim your inheritance.’ I left the

building a different person. In fact, that was really the beginning of my life.”

Easter celebrations at Trinity were wonderful! Many thanks to all of the hard work by so many

people to make everything extra special at this very special time of the year!

Thank You for all of the donations for Bremwood. They have been packed with some being

delivered earlier in the month and the rest will go soon. All items are deeply appreciated.

The Mission Cross project for May and June will cover a couple youth related projects for the summer. First, the

middle school students will be going to Minnesota in July to work at a homeless shelter. We will have a list of supplies

that the students can take with them posted on the Mission Cross. Please take a list with you as you shop. Second, we

have a list of items that could be used at Ewalu – to maintain the camp as well as to use with campers over the summer.

Items include: Expo low odor chisel tip dry eraser markers; assorted pastel colored bond paper (8.5 x 11); Sharpie

assorted pack; Post-It notes – 3x3 inch; Post-It easel pad; markers – assorted colors; rapid flow dual-port inflation

needles; magnesium fire starter; rolling pins; steak knives and other kitchen knives; stainless steel measuring cups; grill

lighters; kitchen funnel; whisks; oven mitts; hand tools – all varieties; hard steel modified D twist lock carabiner; and

various craft supplies. This list will also be posted on the Mission Cross – grab that list to take with you as well.

Forget to bring your “Lenten Offering” folder back to church? You can still drop it off at the church office or in the

offering plate at weekly services.

LWR Projects Thanks to all the quilters and a special thanks to everyone who helped box the quilts

and load the truck. We also thank Marlin Nystel and Adis Lee for hauling the quilts

and kits to Greene.

This year we delivered to Lutheran World Relief: 171 quilts, 11 blankets, 9 fabric kits, 14 personal care kits,

2 baby care kits and 22 soap. Good Job done again!

Craddock was so moved by the story he asked the man, “What’s your name?”

He said, “Ben Hooper.”

Craddock recalled his own father talking when he was just a child about how the people of Tennessee had

twice elected as governor a man born out of wedlock, Ben Hooper.

We are the image of Jesus Christ reflected back onto the world. This is an awesome responsibility, and it is also

deeply humbling. Each and every one of us has the potential to have a profound effect on people we meet by how well

we reflect that image. We are all children of God with an inheritance to claim. We have an advantage because we know

that. There are many people, like the young Ben Hooper, who need to hear that they, too, are children of God. Too

often we are like the vacationing Dr. Fred Craddock who don’t want to be bothered by the stories others have to tell.

Look around you. Do you see someone who needs to know that they are a beloved child of God?

MAY YOUTH NEWS FROGGERS

Froggers are any kids in grades 4-6. Froggers will meet on May 7th at 3:30 pm for our final meeting of the school year. On that day we will go to the Annual Farm Day at the Suhr Dairy near Fredericksburg. There will be a large assortment of farm animals to see and help feed. We thank Ed and Lavonne Suhr and their children for the tour of their dairy farm. We do need drivers to help us on that day. Parents that have younger children not in Froggers are invited to join us with their kids. ***********************************************************************************

MIDDLE SCHOOL YOUTH NEWS

Our confirmation aged youth in grades 7-8 will be having their unit test on “The Life of Jesus” on Wednesday, May 7th. The next week (May 14th) we will be having our annual confirmation picnic. Youth are asked to bring something to pass and the church will provide the meat, buns, condiments, table service and beverage. On that night we will meet at Mikkelson Park at the far shelter by the skate park, weather permitting. We will begin to serve at 6 pm and finish by 7 pm. ****************************************************************** HIGH SCHOOL YOUTH NEWS

SCRIP CARDS STILL FOR SALE

The mission youth still have scrip cards from your favorite retailers for sale. Here is how it works: 1. You have a need to purchase an item from one of the retailers you often patronize… (Kwik Star, ACE Hardware, Shopko Hometown, Target, Wal-Mart, Buffalo Wild Wings, Red Lobster and the like).

2. You come to the church office or to the narthex table after worship or see a mission trip youth or adult and make your choices.

3. We fill those needs with available cards or place an order if the cards selected are not currently in stock. Cards not in stock will be ordered and available within a week.

4. Whatever you pay for the gift card, you get to spend at the retailer. In other words, you get a $25 card, you have $25 worth of credit at the retailer and the youth group gets up to 15% back as a rebate to use for our mission trip.

5. No more items you don’t need. You get products that you would purchase anyway, such as Kwik Star gasoline and the church youth make money for our trip. It’s a WIN/WIN situation! KLUB MEETINGS FOR MAY

KLUB meeting nights for the month of May will be on Wednesday 14th and Wednesday, May 28th both nights

at 7:30 p.m. The meeting on May 14th will be followed by a youth board meeting. The $100 payments from

non-Trinity youth are due on May 15th.

The Sunday School 1st and 2nd graders will be singing at the 10:30 service on

May 4th. They will be sharing songs they have learned during their opening.

Our last day of Sunday school is May 11. It seems the year has flown by. Call me

crazy but it is time to be thinking about next fall. Please considerer how you can

contribute to the Christian Education of our kids. I feel there are lots of parents

who could help in simple ways I just do not know who you are. Give me, Joanne

Tupper, a call at 641-394-2386 or call the office to volunteer.

You are God’s Angels. You are all a blessing to the kids whose lives you touch

each week. If you have not thanked your child’s teacher, please take the time to do

so in the next few weeks.

Summer Day Camp is July 21 -24 This year’s theme is “Living to Celebrate”. Our theme verse is from Ecclesiastes 3:1,

and it reads, “For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under

heaven”. This summer we will be learning about the different seasons of the church

community. Daily themes will include – Living in Advent, Living in Christmas, Living

in Lent, Living in Easter, and Living in Pentecost.

We will be starting at 12:30 and ending at 5:30. Summer Day camp is for kids completing grades K-5.

Older youth are welcome to be volunteers for the younger kids. We will feed the kids a snack in the middle

of the afternoon. They will need to have lunch before they arrive. Our week of Summer Day Camp will

conclude with a program at the 6:30 Thursday evening service. Please mark your calendars now so your kids

and their friends can join us for a fun week! Day Camp registration forms are available in the Church office.

As our winter schedules close and the new spring and summer schedules starts, let us grow in

the knowledge of our Lord and Savior. Now as we prepare the fields, may we take time to

praise and thank God our provider.

We want to thank all who have helped contribute materials, sew and hem our quilts for LWR. We will meet May7th &

14th at 8:30 – 11:30. Come and join us for the fellowship.

The second Wednesday, May 14th our circles meet at 1:30 for Bible study with Geri Oltrogge as hostess and 7:30 with

Danice Larson as hostess. Both meetings are held in the Fireside room at church. All are welcome to come.

Friday, May 16th is the Bremwood Salad Luncheon at 1:00 pm in Waverly. If you are interested in attending the

Women's Convention on Saturday, June 21st, your reservation should be mailed in by May 25th for $36.95. If mailed

after May 25th, the registration amount will be $46.95. Stop at the office for a copy of the registration form.

This will be our last get together until September. We will decide at our May get together what will be reading for September. I know that many of you who are reading this message today would love to be able to get out to church on Sundays. But,

for many, physical limitations make this impossible. I understand this. Thank God for televised religious programs!

I read recently of a pastor who humorously decided to make it easier for excuse-making people to go to church. So he

decided to propose, tongue-in-cheek I’m sure, a “NO EXCUSE SUNDAY.” “To make it possible for everyone to attend

Sunday school and church next Sunday we will have a special ‘No Excuse Sunday’,” he said. Then he announced the

program.

• Cots for those who say, “Sunday is my only day to sleep in.”

• Eye drops for those who have red eyes from too much TV Saturday night.

• Steel helmets for those who say, “The roof will cave in if I ever come to Sunday school and church.”

• Blankets will be furnished for those who say, “The church is too cold,” and fans for those who think it’s too hot.

• Hearing aids for those who say, “The pastor speaks too softly,” and ear plugs for those who say, “The music is too

loud.”

• Score cards for listing all of the hypocrites present.

• Some friends for those who say they don’t “know anybody.”

• Box lunches for those who can’t go to church and cook dinner the same day.

• One special interest corner will feature trees, grass and flowers for those who prefer to worship God in nature.

• Finally, the sanctuary will be decorated with both Christmas poinsettias and Easter lilies for those who have never

seen the church without them.

Lesson for this week? It’s not about attending church. It’s about taking another look at our excuses. When we feel a

nudge from God, let’s stop before we open our mouth to make an excuse. Often, our excuses are pretty flimsy, aren’t

they?

May is National Foster Care Month May is National Foster Care Month, a time to raise awareness about the over 6,300 Iowa children who are in foster care or other out-of-home placements. Every child deserves a safe and permanent connection to a caring adult, and Iowa has an ongoing need for more people willing to be that person for a child in foster care.

The need is especially urgent for teenagers. Every year teens turn 18 and age out of the foster care system without permanent connections. Who helps them apply for college or move into their first apartment? Who do they visit on holidays, call for life advice or celebrate their graduation with? It only takes one person to make an extraordinary difference.

Thank you for being a friend to Iowa’s children through supporting the work of LSI. LSI is a lead agency in Iowa KidsNet, the statewide collaboration of agencies that recruits, trains, licenses and supports families to foster and adopt Iowa children.
