May 2014 ISC Meetings Participant Briefing Pack Monday 5th to Wednesday 7th May 2014 Introductory Comments The following notes will help you pray and prepare towards our May meetings. As global leaders it is expected that all participants will come to the meetings having understood fully and prepared to discuss the issues so to fully contribute to the process. Over the years the May meetings have typically been around 20 persons, that is the GF and Bench for each SP but this year is was felt necessary to extend the invitation to a total of 60-70 persons for three reasons. 1. Ensure changes affecting the whole movement are understood and implemented Ready Set Go - we made a start with this last November, the overwhelming feedback from all participants was that this was critical given the acceleration to ECEC and therefore we need to keep moving forward. In Sport - Significant progress has been made in a short amount of time and again we need to keep moving forward with this development for the sake of the movement 2. Better planning for November 2014 Time will be given to the global facilitation teams within each SP to work together, face to face, on identifying their outcomes and list of participants as well as ensure that each SP understands the direction of travel of each other. 3. Time to work on specific global priorities A number of priorities affecting the movement were identified and specific work groups established to work on these priorities over the three days. The planning team have estimated that all May Orlando participants will need to set aside 10-14 hours of preparation time, whether on their own or in discussion within their country, region or SP and therefore every effort has been made to send this to you in good time. These May meetings are the most ambitious in terms of number and complexity or outcomes and therefore it will be important to prepare well as time cannot be given to describe the issues - this will help us to work on outcomes from when we arrive and steward our time. What does this mean for the Schedule? The basic outline and timings of the schedule are as follows. Each morning we will start with Devotions but this will include a range of styles from a small group inductive study to a more familiar talk from the bible. We will have four Plenary sessions, two on day 1 and one each on days 2 and 3 in which all will be together hearing and discussing a range of movement outcomes. We will have 11 Sessions in which much of the work on the specific outcomes will be done working on a range of issues which will become clearer throughout the briefing pack Page of 1 22

"May 2014 ISC Meetings Participant Briefing Pack!

Monday 5th to Wednesday 7th May 2014" ""Introductory Comments !"The following notes will help you pray and prepare towards our May meetings. As global leaders it is expected that all participants will come to the meetings having understood fully and prepared to discuss the issues so to fully contribute to the process.""Over the years the May meetings have typically been around 20 persons, that is the GF and Bench for each SP but this year is was felt necessary to extend the invitation to a total of 60-70 persons for three reasons. ""1.! Ensure changes affecting the whole movement are understood and implemented!"• Ready Set Go - we made a start with this last November, the overwhelming feedback from all

participants was that this was critical given the acceleration to ECEC and therefore we need to keep moving forward.""

• In Sport - Significant progress has been made in a short amount of time and again we need to keep moving forward with this development for the sake of the movement ""

2.! Better planning for November 2014 !"Time will be given to the global facilitation teams within each SP to work together, face to face, on identifying their outcomes and list of participants as well as ensure that each SP understands the direction of travel of each other. ""3.! Time to work on specific global priorities !"A number of priorities affecting the movement were identified and specific work groups established to work on these priorities over the three days.""The planning team have estimated that all May Orlando participants will need to set aside 10-14 hours of preparation time, whether on their own or in discussion within their country, region or SP and therefore every effort has been made to send this to you in good time. !"These May meetings are the most ambitious in terms of number and complexity or outcomes and therefore it will be important to prepare well as time cannot be given to describe the issues - this will help us to work on outcomes from when we arrive and steward our time. !""What does this mean for the Schedule? !"The basic outline and timings of the schedule are as follows. Each morning we will start with Devotions but this will include a range of styles from a small group inductive study to a more familiar talk from the bible. ""We will have four Plenary sessions, two on day 1 and one each on days 2 and 3 in which all will be together hearing and discussing a range of movement outcomes. ""We will have 11 Sessions in which much of the work on the specific outcomes will be done working on a range of issues which will become clearer throughout the briefing pack "

What is the schedule?!"

""How can I understand the content within the schedule?!"As mentioned above we will be all together in the Devotions and Plenary times. ""During the Sessions 1-11, there will be five different streams and for the most part they will run as five separate meetings, that is each participant will be in just ONE of the streams. The five being ""1. A range of ISC and SP discussions - most of the participants will be involved here. ""2. Heart Work Team - Roy will facilitate a working group towards a number of outcomes relating

to Heart trainings and resources for the movement ""3. Brazil - Jorge and Jonson will facilitate a strategic review and planning towards the 2018

multiplication of 879 cities.""4. Media - Work will be done on site by a small team towards the outcomes relating to the Heart

Work Team and the Ready Set Go discussions. ""5. Ready Set Go Big Book - A small team will be working separately to ensure that we leave

Orlando with the most complete and agreed draft in preparation for translation for November. " !"Therefore the rest of this briefing pack, starting with the range of ISC and SP discussions, tries to describe the outcomes included in the 11 sessions and 4 plenary meetings and give any context to ensure all participants are as prepared as possible. They are NOT in the order to be discussed. ""We would encourage all participants to read through the whole document, regardless of what stream you are in, to be aware of the various streams and work groups and come with as many ideas and recommendations as possible for each of the outcomes.""To help we have tried to limit each issue or area to one page (with exception of Heart Work Team) "

"1. ! Direction of travel within the ISC from May 2014 - November 2015" ""When will this be discussed? !"During Sessions 1-3 on Day 1 !"What are the key outcomes that we are trying to achieve in this discussion ""• Looking from a global perspective what are the outcomes we are working towards in the

movement between now and November 2015""• What do we think this means for our Orlando meetings in November 2014, May 2015 and

November 2015 Orlando 2015 ""What practically do these outcomes look like!"A description of outcomes, split by what this means for November 2014, by May 2015 and then by November 2015. "2. ! Multiplication within the movement " ""When will this be discussed? !"During Sessions 1-3 on Day 1 !"What are the key outcomes that we are trying to achieve in this discussion ""• Agree what we mean when we say multiplication, i.e. is there clarity and understanding regarding

multiplication of what? ""• How do we measure it, how do we celebrate multiplication every time we are together (e.g. May

and November) ""• Understand what the challenges are to accelerating multiplication throughout the world ""• Understand what is working well within the movement in terms of multiplication?""• What recommendations to overcome the challenges or to maximise strengths and can we

integrate these into November 2014, May and November 2015 thinking ""• Discuss how the November conference will equip, empower and serve participants in

multiplication outcomes""What practically do these outcomes look like in Orlando? !"A definition written down for what we mean by ‘multiplication’ ""Document the recommendations aligned to progress by November 2014 - 2015. Included in this plan will be WHO will do WHAT by WHEN""Any other notes that can help in context to prepare well !"In our conversations it could appear that we could easily get confused about what it is that we are committed to multiplying and therefore the confusion gets in the way of multiplication. Therefore using consistent language and words will be important.""This risk may have been increased with the recent introduction of two new terms into the language of the movement and how they relate to what has been well known and understood for many years. For example:""Every Country Every City (ECEC) "The big idea that ECEC tries to communicate is a vision that goes to the ends of the earth but recently we’ve also added here Community and Church as alternative C’s depending on the context. The multiplication of ECEC means that we have needed to revisit our MR and BR structure as we look forward 10 years. ""Ready Set Go "It was agreed that the explaining the movement needed simplification and Ready Set Go was the framework which has been generally agreed. Likewise that the multiplication of ECEC asks questions to our geographical structure, Ready Set Go will ask questions as to the appropriate SP’s as we look forward 10 years. "

Page of 5 22

"3. ! Ready Set Go - From a Global perspective" ""When will this be discussed? !"During Sessions 1-3 on Day 1 !"What are the key outcomes that we are trying to achieve in this discussion ""• Agree what Ready Set Go means for the movement? Agree the words we will use to explain for

consistency and reduce confusion. ""• Agree the direction for how Ready Set Go will be understood and applied in the movement ""• Agree how we will train the movement in Ready Set Go and who will take the next actions ""• Agree what the above outcomes mean for November 2014, May 2015 and November 2015 ""• We also here could review the contents of the Big Book and collect some feedback ""What practically do these outcomes look like in Orlando? !"The definitions documented ""The Ready Set Go Big Book reviewed and all feedback collected""All the next steps on the discussion points agreed, documented and dated. ""Any other notes that can help in context to prepare well !"We introduced this for the first time in November and the feedback from all participants was very encouraging in that they could see the value in simplifying the movement as the growth accelerates and as we talk to churches more and more around the world ""In the past 4 years, the ISC has been moving towards seeing good work happening in every country and after that, in every city and hopefully eventually in every community. This is what has been called the ECEC vision. It is a vision of continually multiplying the heart, vision and tools of the movement towards making disciples in every nation, in and through the world of sport. For this goal to be possible, the way we explain and understand the sports movement needs to be simpler. For this reason, the movement is in the process of adopting a simple and powerful way of understanding everything we do, all wrapped up in the three words - READY SET and GO.""We cast vision to the church to get READY for mission in and through sport, give them ideas that work to GO which they can adapt and apply to their context and help them get SET in taking them from Ready to Go through training and resources.!"READY is about bringing people together under one vision and nine heart values of the movement. Out of this forms servant leadership, partnership and teams."SET is about training to grow servant leaders with Biblical understanding, godly character and skills to be able to Go and make disciples."GO is about going and making disciples. The movement has many ways that this can be done in and through the world of sport. ""

Page of 6 22

"4. ! Ready Set Go - Implications of RSG from a SP perspective" ""When will this be discussed? !"During Sessions 1-3 on Day 1 !"What are the key outcomes that we are trying to achieve in this discussion ""• In light of the Ready Set Go approach above discuss what Ready Set Go means for each SP

and how all relate to each other""• Discuss and make recommendations for whether the Ready Set Go framework will make the

movement work differently and if so how?""• Discuss whether there will be any changes or integration of SP’s around the Ready Set Go

framework ""• What does RSG mean for the geographical structure of the movement""What practically do these outcomes look like in Orlando? !"Decisions and process agreed and documented ""Actions and timetable agreed and documented ""Any other notes that can help in context to prepare well !"The Global AWT will be discussing some ideas in their meeting on 4th May of how some SP’s may be able to either work more closely together or integrate - an update of this discussion will be given to all participants on 5th. ""Regardless of whether there are SP’s that integrate together, one thing is certainly clear in that a good discussion to have is whether it is important that SP’s work any differently going forward.""The more LOCAL the movement gets, do we turn UP the volume on READY SET GO and the sub strategies to offer the church and turn DOWN the volume on the SP’s being the way in which the global movement chooses to organise itself which isn’t that importantly for the church in every city and every country to know. ""Don’t we simply cast vision to the church to get READY for mission in and through sport, give them ideas that work to GO which they can apply to their culture and context and then help them get SET in taking them from Ready to Go through training and resources. Heart of the Movement " " " " version 10"

What we do…!• Proclaim the Gospel!• Make Disciples!• Obey the Bible!

Where we serve…!• In and through the Local Church!• In and through Sport!• In every country and every city!

How we do it…!• We live as servants!• We work in teams!• We build partnerships!

What we do!Proclaim the Gospel!

1. We know, live, and tell the Gospel in the world of sport and through the universal language of sport. (Colossians 1:6)"

2. The Gospel is the powerful good news of salvation (Romans 1:16) that motivates us to live ‘life to the full’ now (John 10:10) and gives hope for eternity. (Ephesians 1: 13-14, Philippians 3:20-21)"

3. All of us are messengers of the Gospel and need to go with boldness and confidence in God (Philippians 1:27-28, Acts 19:8). We are called be vulnerable and humble, watching and listening for the responsive person of peace. (Luke 10:5-7, Philippians 2:3-4)"

Make Disciples!1. We are commanded by Jesus to go and make disciples who desire to follow Him in all of

life and invest in the lives of others so that they also become disciples who make disciples. (Matthew 28:18-20, 2 Timothy 2:2)"

2. Disciple making teaches others to love and obey all that Jesus commanded. (1 John 2:3-6)"3. Disciple making is best when it is intentional and relational, and often begins before

someone becomes a follower of Christ. (Philippians 4:9, 1 Thessalonians 1:2-8)"

Obey the Bible!1. Everything we need to know about God and His desire for our lives is in the Bible. (2

Timothy 3:16)"2. We study, teach and preach the Bible and together discover what it says so that it shapes

our attitudes, plans and actions. (2 Timothy 4:2, Colossians 1:28)"3. God transforms us as we obey the Bible. (2 Timothy 3:14-17, 1 Thessalonians 4:1-3,

Colossians 1:9-10)"

Page of 15 22

Where we serve! In and through the Local Church!

1. The Church is at the center of what God is doing; his primary tool for mission - the expression of the Gospel on earth. (Matthew 16: 18-20, Ephesians 1:22-23)"

2. The Church is His unstoppable, universal body of believers who gather locally for encouragement and evangelism - a fellowship and a force. (Ephesians 1: 18-23, Ephesians 2: 19-22)"

3. Sport provides a global, strategic opportunity for His Church to grow. "4. The local church needs to be inspired and equipped to embrace and nurture sports people

of all levels of experience. "

In and through Sport!1. God’s design is that all of our lives, including play and sport, can be used to worship Him.

(Romans 12:1,2)"2. Sport is a universal language that motivates and connects people everywhere. "3. While God gives some people greater talent in sport, we all have the ability to enjoy sport.

Sport is one way we can get to know ourselves and God better. It provides a unique opportunity for God to make us more like Him. (Romans 12:1-8)"

In every country and every city!1. The whole world is the Lord’s and His church is to be made up of people from every

country, city, and community for His glory. (Psalms 24:1, Romans 14:11)"2. Jesus commissioned us to go into His world to make disciples. Multiplication happens when

these disciples make disciples. (Matthew 28:19-20)"3. Mission through sport and to athletes can connect with every culture and setting. It can be

adapted to meet the needs of individuals and communities. (1 Corinthians 9:22-26)"

How we do it!We live as servants!

1. Jesus shows us the Kingdom perspective of greatness through humility and obedience to His Father. (Ephesians 4:1-2, Philippians 2:1-11)"

2. God calls us to put the interests of others first even though it runs against self-seeking human nature. (Mark 10:45, Philippians 2:2-3)"

3. God is in charge of the results of our labor. We are called to be obedient servants and trust in His ways. (Proverbs 3:4-5)"

We work in teams!1. God is a team, working in total unity and purpose, as expressed through the Trinity.

(Genesis 1:26, 2:18)"2. The Church is the body of Christ and it works best when common purpose, motivated by

humility, unites all the parts. Teamwork means giving unconditionally. (Romans 12:3-8)"3. Diversity in the team (culture, roles, spiritual gifts, maturity, personality styles and talents),

increases the strength of the team, the potential for growth and multiplication. (1 Corinthians 12:12)"

We build partnerships!1. Partnering involves mutual submission to achieve common goals larger than either person

alone can achieve. It grows out of a mutual respect for Jesus. (Ephesians 5:21)"2. Partnering seeks to bring people into the unity that God desires. (John 17:21-23)"

Page of 16 22

3. No one-person, church, denomination, organization can fulfill the Great Commission on their own. We need each other to fulfill Jesus’ plan. (Ephesians 4:11-16)"

4. Partnering is difficult and needs perseverance. As each focus on serving the Lord, trust grows and partnering will develop from simple connections to complex collaboration. (Ephesians 6:6-7)"

Appendix- !

The Gospel Summary #1- God’s rescue plan!God loves us and made us in his image. Everything God made is good! (Genesis 1:26-31). "However we all have a sinful nature and live in constant rebellion to His rule. The consequence of sin is ultimately death, without God and His goodness forever (Genesis 3:1-19, Roman 8:6-8). ""Jesus, God’s son, is the only person who has ever lived a perfect life with no sin. He loves us so much that He died a brutal and unjust death on our behalf because God cannot ignore sin; it must be dealt with (John 3:16). ""Through His mercy and justice our problem of sin is fixed through Jesus and we can live in right relationship with God (1 John1:8-9, Galatians 2:15-16) . "Jesus came back to life to prove that He has conquered death once and for all (1 Corinthians 15:2-6). ""He offers salvation freely to those who repent and believe in what He has done (Acts 3:19). This new relationship will radically alter our life as we allow God’s Spirit (Ephesians 2:6-10), who lives in each of His followers to shape all our thoughts and actions (Romans 6:12-14, Ephesians 4:22-24, Philippians 4:9). ""We have a short time on earth to help others know and understand the Good News of Jesus before all things are finally united under His rule and we spend eternity with God worshipping and enjoying Him forever. (Ephesians 1:2-10)"

" Note: Some of these scriptures touch on a number of ideas in the Gospel summary which is a problem in including them in the text.!"

Gospel summary #2! "1.         God is love."“God is love, and those who abide in love abide in God, and God abides in them.“ (1 John 4:16)" "„…because you loved me before the foundation of the world!“ (John 17:24)" "2.         God is the creator of all things and wants community with us."„…for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created.“ (Revelation 4:11)" "„But the Lord God called to the man, and said to him, “Where are you?““ (Genesis 3:9)" "3.         We are separated from God and can´t change that by behaving well."„There is no one who is righteous, not even one; there is no one who has understanding, there is no one who seeks God.
