Dine at the Warrior Zone at Lewis North for hearty, meat-stuffed sandwiches, wraps, salads, quesadillas, burgers, chicken, wings, sliders and more! Pictured are the Lebanese vegetar-ian flatbread pizza, chicken chipotle wrap, red hot chicken sandwich and our own Zap brand energy drink.

Are you disappointed with fast-food joints where

you get a half-hearted version of what’s shown on commer-cials?

You’ll never get a bad version of food when you dine with us at an MWR eatery!

Take the Warrior Zone at Lewis North, for instance. Get freshly pre-pared food that not only caters to hefty appetites but is served fast and fresh.

We’re talking bulgogi, Thai chicken, chicken chipotle and Middle Eastern wraps; gourmet salads and sandwiches; tapas quesadillas, wings, sliders and pizzas. All for less than 8 bucks; most from $4–$5, easy on your wallet.

Another favorite at Lewis North is The Bistro at Russell Landing at the end of American Lake Boulevard.

The menu’s loaded with favorites, and dinner’s always a great experience (especially when it’s warm enough to dine on the patio overlooking the lake).

Think stacked-high sandwiches, gourmet pizzas you can’t find any-where else, house pasta specialties and thick, juicy burgers.

Dinner’s a date with sassy salmon, sizzling steak, Porterhouse pork chop and chicken Parmesan entrees.

Did we mention to save room for dreamy desserts? Even if you just drop

by for gelato scoops, you’re in for a real treat not found at any fast-food joint.

Now, here’s a real crowd-pleaser — Habañero Mexican Grill at Whispering Firs Golf Course at McChord Field.

Order freshly made tacos, huge bur-ritos, ensaladas and more for a superb dining experience in a relaxing and scenic dining area. Sit out on the side patio and watch golfers on sunny days!

Find more of our quick-service diners — such as Globemaster Grill, Cascade Community Center, Battle Bean Café and Café Lancelatte — on our website at JBLMmwr.com under Dining and Coffee Shops.

Discover more to do both indoors and out with

us this spring. Now’s a great time to learn a new skill while you’re at it!

For instance, sign up for kayak or scu-ba lessons if you want to make friends with Puget Sound waters (and beyond). Or explore trails you never knew could be so fun on a mountain bike or a backpacking trip.

The Outdoor Recreation program offers outings in all these areas:

Introduction to mountain biking is an instructional guided ride designed for beginners. You spend the day learning the basics, while getting plenty of time to work on your new-found skills. Bike, helmet, gloves and transportation are provided.

Backpacking 101 classes broaden your backpacking knowledge with help from the staffers at Northwest Ad-venture Center. Topics include proper clothing, gear, ABCs of packing and food supplies.

Would you like to try crabbing? Sign up for a fun crabbing trip to West-port this summer with the ODR crew. All you need is a fishing license and a bucket with a lid for your catch!

Did you know you can fish and hunt right here at JBLM? Get great fishing tips from the folks at the Northwest Adventure Center while you find the perfect fishing spots on base or on fish-ing trips with ODR. You can even rent fishing gear and boats and buy bait from Russell Landing Marina.

The next hunting course at the NAC’s Skeet Range is June 17–21 from

6–9 p.m. Classes fill fast — register at http://www.register-ed.com/programs/94.

The cost is $10 per student (nonre-fundable) on the first night of class (Monday). Call 253-967-7056 (Skeet Range) or 253-967-6263 (NAC Info Desk) for more information.

Get up-close-and-personal encoun-ters on the waters of Puget Sound with kayaking and scuba. Kayak trips are wildly popular during the warm months and are planned with begin-ners in mind. Each trip takes advantage of the tides so you can easily paddle to popular spots around the local waters.

Scuba classes begin in an indoor pool to familiarize you with equipment and help you become comfortable learning and performing tasks under-water.

Only when you master the tasks you learn in the pool will you be intro-duced to open water. After you pass skills tests on open water, you’ll be guided on an underwater tour that will introduce you to all the beautiful wild-life that exists below.

For class details and dates, call the NAC at 253-967-6263 or the Scuba Diving Center at 253-967-3405. The Adventures section starting on page 20 offers even more ideas for new experi-ences.

Love to frame and hang some of the scenic photos you’ve taken but hate the expense? Get the knack of matting and framing at your consolidated Arts & Crafts Center at McChord Field to save you both time and money.

The Arts & Crafts Center staff teaches you how to choose and use mats with frames, master basic cuts, cut glass,

piece together frames and add backing. The class is offered Tuesdays from

1–4 p.m. The fee is $30; materials are an additional charge. Bring in a 5-by-7-inch print to frame.

Call 253-982-6718 for registration details.

With all the summer travel you’re planning to get to favorite destinations, you don’t have time to schedule ahead for maintenance.

Become less dependent on auto dealers when you need an oil change or lube and filter. Learn to replace them and maintain your vehicle with hands-on classes at your MWR Auto Centers.

At the McChord Auto Center:• Learntoperformastandard

preventive check-up. One session is $20 plus supplies.

• Learntochangetheoilandlubeyourvehicle. One session is $25 plus supplies.

• Ifyoususpectsomething’sgoingwrong, save considerable cash by making an appointment for a com-plete engine diagnostic. The problem can be pinpointed and you’ll get free advice on how to fix it for the best price. Call 253-982-7226 for a class or en-

gine diagnostic appointment. If you’re into fixing cars, you have

plenty of company at the Lewis Auto Center. The facilities include equip-ment to help you rebuild engines, repair and repaint dents and scratches, change tires, and much more.

New parks provide opportunities for good times, good views

The trails provide a great opportunity

to get your Family outside close to home.

Stop at the new gazebo on the point

and take in the views — and snap a few pictures for Grandma and Grandpa — as you walk to Shoreline Park for a summer swim (check at JBLMmwr.com for details about the start of summer hours).

Walking from Russell Landing Marina toward Summer Cove Park brings you to a spot perfect for enjoy-able lunches out of the office and play-

dates alike. There are new picnic tables throughout the park that overlook the lake, as well as a picnic area on the sandy beach. Pack a picnic lunch and enjoy it lakeside, or call the Bistro at 253-964-2813 for to-go lunch. Summer Cove is also the site of the largest (and newest) playground at JBLM.

Additional improvements include landscaping, irrigation and historical signage. Stay tuned to the Focus and JBLMmwr.com for updated information.

You probably know Shoreline Park and Russell Landing Marina

as great places for recreation

opportunities at Lewis North. At

Shoreline Park, you can swim, play

and rent canoes. At Russell Landing

Marina, you can launch a boat, fish,

play at the playground, rent a pavi-

lion for a party and grab a bite to

eat at The Bistro at Russell Landing

(see page 7 for more information

about the Bistro’s Mother’s Day Brunch).

Soon, these two summer hot spots

you know and love will be even better!

“A lot of time and thought has gone

into the project. It’s been fun. We

think it’s a great place for JBLM Fami-

lies to enjoy,” says Scott Ballentine,

MWR project manager.

A new lakeside trail gives you gorgeous

views of American Lake, connecting

Shoreline Park to Russell Landing Marina

and continuing to Summer Cove.

Strike a new chord with SKIESUnlimited’s guitar classes

Spring has sprung, and with it comes the sweet sounds of success!

Tarana and the music instructors at SKIESUnlimited Youth Academy are adding more classes and opportunities for young musicians to learn to play guitar and piano, fine-tune vocal skills and improve self-esteem.

Tarana says, “The goal is to have fun as we grab a guitar” and learn how to play and write songs using basic chords.

From the sounds of it, the goal’s been met. “I’m most excited to play the guitar. It’s my favorite instrument!” exclaims 11-year-old Vartan.

“I’ve never played an instrument before. I’m most excited about learning something new,” seconds Alyssa, 13. If she becomes a famous musician, she says she’ll pay off her mom’s mortgage and buy a house on the beach.

If your child’s interested in learning to play guitar, sign up for a music class

YOUTH OF THE YEAR

ershika Maple has been named Military Youth of the Year by Boys & Girls Clubs of America

and is set to receive a college scholar-ship and vie for a regional title this summer.

SERVICE • CHARACTER • LEADERSHIP

Congratulations to Jershika Maple!MILITARY YOUTH OF THE YEAR

Selected among three outstanding military youth, Jershika Maple from JBLM has been named the Washington State Boys & Girls Clubs Military Youth of the Year. Being named Youth of the Year is the highest honor a Boys & Girls Club member can receive. As the new teen representative for all BGCA-affili-ated youth programs in the state, she’ll receive a $1,000 college scholarship from Tupperware Brands Corporation.

The gala dinner, attended by local Youth of the Year winners from across the state, is the culmination of months of hard work, community service and speech and essay preparation. The din-ner is the finale of a two-day Youth of the Year event that started in Olympia at the Governor’s Mansion Wednesday, March 27. After meeting with Lieuten-ant Governor Brad Owen, youth trav-eled to Seattle. At the lunch reception the next day at Bell Harbor, local win-ners competed and shared their per-sonal stories among board, staff, com-munity leaders, their Families and peers.

“Getting nominated for Youth of the Year is such an honor, but win-ning state?! There are no words for how proud we are of Jershika and her state victory. She’s a fabulous example of a youth who is willing to give her time and soul to help others and improve the youth centers and life for our teens and younger children in and out of CYSS programs,” says Emmy Niemczyk, JBLM Teen Zone director.

Jershika is known for her bubbly per-sonality, exceptional singing voice and willingness to help a friend.

“Jershika Maple and all Youth of the Year nominees are living proof that BGCA-affiliated youth centers across the country are fulfilling their mission of inspiring and enabling young people to be great,” says Jim Clark, president and CEO, BGCA.

In July, Jershika will compete against other BGCA military-affiliated state winners within the Pacific Region. If named Military Regional winner for the Pacific Region, she’ll be awarded an additional $10,000 college scholar-ship. She would then move on to the National Military Youth of the Year competition and will be one of six Military Regional winners to compete in Washington, D.C., in September.

Learning & earning

s a consumer, financial literacy is an important factor in improv- ing our basic understanding of

how to handle money and make smart decisions concerning personal finances.

Increasing your financial knowledge and learning better money management techniques provides the opportunity to save up to hundreds of dollars each month — thousands of dollars per year.

Regardless of your age, take a few minutes a day to improve your basic financial management skills to become better educated on consumer matters, improve your awareness of the bottom- line figures before signing documents and, most importantly, implement pre-ventive measures to help you avoid the pitfalls of predatory practices (preda-tory practices include payday loans, car title loans, rent-to-own shops or high-interest rate loans with no-down payments required. It can also include some businesses that sell services such as insurance and investments).

Many experts agree that increased fi-nancial literacy empowers you to make

smart financial decisions — understand your credit report, learn to maintain a monthly budget and educate yourself.

Understanding your credit report and how your credit score is deter-mined can increase your financial literacy. A higher credit score may save thousands of dollars in interest. For example, if Consumer A has a current credit score of 720, Consumer A could possibly qualify for a $15,000 auto loan at an APR of 6%. If Consumer B has a current credit score of 620, Consumer B could possibly qualify for an APR of 18% or higher. The difference in the credit score could cause Consumer B to pay $5,454.56 more in interest alone for the same timeframe as Consumer A.

Learning to maintain a monthly budget and tracking your monthly expenses also improves financial literacy. Small purchases on weekdays can add up to be more than one large purchase on a weekend. Most large purchases are planned but small purchases are often taken for granted. Tracking when, what and where you spend keeps you in

charge of your finances. Being con-scious of the amount of money spent andwhattypeofspenderyouare(debit/credit card spender or cash only) may provide a safety net from overspending.

Educating yourself will improve your financial well-being, overall mo-rale and financial success. Review your credit report at least once a year and maintain awareness of your consumer rights. Tracking your daily and month-ly expenditures provides a tool for preventive measures to stay in line with your overall goals.

For more information or assistance in obtaining and reviewing credit reports, developing a budget or learning money management techniques, call Army Community Service at 253-967-1453 or the Airman & Family Readiness Center at 253-982-2695 to schedule an ap-pointment or register for an upcoming class.
