TEE OFF

The incident involving Tiger Woods at The Masters, where an infringement of The Rules of Golf costhim a two shot penalty, illustrates howcomplicated these Rules can be. And don't forget,we amateurs are expected to apply them toourselves. We are, in effect, our own referees. Itcan be problematical as the following, genuineexample proves.

Playing in a Summer Singles competition, two clubmembers reached the first green. The playerfurthest away putts first. His opponent strollsover towards the pin. A great putt hits the pin andgoes in the hole. "I claim the hole because you hitthe pin." Says the opponent. The putterindignantly shouts that he should have removedthe pin as he was attending it. “But you neverasked me to attend the pin!" claims the opponent. You do have to ask for the pin to be attended. It'sin The Rules. But surely in the spirit of the game, this was unsportsmanlike behaviour.

Both players suspended the match and returnedto the clubhouse for a Ruling. It was determinedthat a player is deemed to be attending the pin ifthey are within two arm lengths of it. Both playersdisagreed with the other about how far from thepin the opponent was standing. The match wasscratched and I don't believe they ever played golftogether again. It's all too easy to lose friends inour world today. Please don't fall, out over TheRules of Golf.

Essex teenagers Dulcie Sverdloff and Sophie Madden won the international team event forEngland at the Irish U18 open stroke play championship. They were two shots clear of Ireland A in the team competition, which was played over the firsttwo rounds of the 54-hole championship at Roganstown.

Their achievement was all the more notable because they played in a team of two which meantboth their scores counted in each round. Their main rivals were in teams of three and were ableto discard one score each round.

Both Dulcie and Sophie went on to be among four players tied for second place in the individualevent, two shots behindIreland’s Olivia Mehaffey.Dulcie claimed the silverpendant awarded to therunner-up on countback.

Dulcie, 18, from GaronPark, is the Englishschools’ champion andthe 2012 winner of theBritish Colleges Sportnational title.

Sophie, 16, from WestEssex, is the EnglishU15 champion and wasrunner-up at theScottish U16championship earlier thismonth. She trains withEngland Golf’s SelectEast squad.

Both girls were in thewinning Essex team at 2012 County Finals.

11th Annual Mighty Masters, Epping Golf Club 4th April 2013Free golf day for novice juniors and their parents.

“Success plucked from the very jaws of failure!”

Every year, Epping Golf Club holds anevent to introduce junior beginnerswithout CONGU handicaps and theirparents to golf. The event is sponsoredby Daniel Robinson and son whoprovide the prizes and organiser tents,by Epping Forest District Council whoprovide funds to pay towards the golftuition and the equipment and EssexGolf Union which take care of thescoring and results.

The terrible weather this year sawRobinsons Seamus Settlefield and GolfClub Manager Neil Sjoberg discussingthe event with some concern: with onlya week to go just 15 people had registered! We decided to limit the size of the event by not usingtents and reducing the number of prizes.

The next day the sun shone and the registrationsswelled to 44.However, on the day we saw horizontal snow andfreezing temperatures! Despite this 66 youngsters andabout 40 parents turned up, Epping's Warren Sargeantand 7 other golf pros representing 5 other clubs werein attendance giving free lessons to one and all.Youngsters opted for 3, 6 or 9 holes and many had tobe driven back indoors to warm up after only a coupleof holes. After a short spell in Epping’s cosy clubhousewith open log fire without exception they all asked togo out again and complete their round.

Despite the weather, this was the best Mighty Mastersyet! The enthusiasm was electric. One seasoned golfpro said, “ I’ve never been to Mighty Masters beforebut for all my years in golf, I’ve never seen golfenthusiasm like this-It’s amazing –thank you so much!”Through the blizzards, EGUs Past President ArthurHarrison, President John Peters and David Edwardsplodded on working out the highly complex prize list.At the end of it all Loughton GC Golfer MickeyCharlton emerged victorious with Epping’s Arun Khudhail a close runner up.

GT LAW JUNIOR GOLF TOUR

The first of this year’s GT Law junior golf tour event was staged at Channels golf club on the8th of April. It was the biggest field so far with some newplayers participating from Garon Park golf club wherethe tour will be visiting later in the year.

Channels was in great condition considering the hardwinter and late spring; thank you to them once again fortheir support in hosting a GT Law tour event.

All the players had a great time with some fine examplesof fantastic sportsmanship and skill, which is great to see.

The players play a course designed in length for their agegroup so no handicaps are required just a lot ofenthusiasm to play.

Pictured are our winners from the first event well doneto them and all their fellow competitors.

On 9th April, Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Golf & Spa once again hosted the biggest Junior Golf Openin the country. There were 134 talented competitors who took on the two championshipcourses, testing their skills against undulating hills, bouts of inclement weather and, of course, eachother. While pride was certainly a major consideration for these young golfers, they were also playing fora £2,500 prize table in equipment and clothing sponsored by Cobra Puma Golf.

The junior golfers, who ranged from 12 to18 years old, played 18 holes on theGainsborough Course in the morning and18 holes on the Constable Course in theafternoon. Of the 134 competitors presenton the day, seven are students of theprestigious Lee Westwood Golf School, which is based at Stoke by Nayland Hotel,Golf & Spa.

The winners of the competition were amixture of home-grown talent and talentfrom slightly farther afield. George Tunbridgeof Bentley Golf Club was the winner ofthe Boys’ title, while local boy Sam O’Brien(from Stoke by Nayland) came in a closesecond. In the Girls’ competition, AliceBarlow of nearby Newton Green GC beatAshleigh Greenham to the number one spotin a nail-bitingly close finish.

Have the edge and calm your nerves!

Like me, were you completely gripped by the recent Masters and seeing Adam Scottultimately crowned after his devastating and surprising pipped-at-the-postdisappointment at the Open? Tweets of drinks on you, and pats on the back were welldeserved. What a result for the young Australian and all credit to Angel Cabrera forhis sportsmanship.

So, how do they keep their cool? Practice makes perfect as they say, but planningplanning planning is more to the point. As you prepare for your match, call up andcheck what is available to eat at the venue and be prepared to take items, includingcereal bars, fruit, drinks, packs of almonds/nut selection and the infamous jellybabies/jelly beans- they allneed to be packed!

Check what is served, and whether it is whatyou would normallyconsume. Golf is both aphysical and psychologicalgame. Get the physicalright and the psychologyshould follow. Ensuringyou're both hydrated andhave the correct fuelsbefore you tee off isdefinitely a firm way ofavoiding unwanted jittersat forthcomingtournaments.

Likewise consider either a B 50 Complex or PP85 (potassium phosphates) tissue salts, available from Nutri 0207 436 5122 to feel cool calm and collected and achieve yourtournament potential! Go on, chill!!

Clacton’s captain drive inLast month, Clacton Golf Club was full with memberskeen to observe the Captains Drive in. The weatherwas cold with snow on the course; a small area ofgrass was cleared to enable William John McGrath, the One hundred & twenty first Captain of Clacton-on-Sea Golf Club, to drive into office and the ladfrom Glasgow did not disappoint with a magnificentdrive that was measured at 164 yards. A sweepstake to guess the Captains drive distancewas held by the members. The winning distance wasguessed correctly by Past Captain Robert Gillespieand Past Captain Steve Scott.

Lee Porter, the PGA Professional attached to Hylands GolfComplex in Chelmsford, has been voted Clubmaker of theYear by the Golf Clubmakers Association in the UK. Lee now ranks in the top ten custom-fit clubmakersthroughout Europe. No wonder he counts 8touring golf pros as customers, including the everpopular local Pro, Robbie Coles.

Where you hit the ball on thedriver face really does matter.

As you are probably aware from some ofmy previous articles, I'm not a great fan ofsome of the marketing (or playing withwords as I call it) that the golf industryoffers. By this, I mean that often we aretold a driver's face has either 'multiple' or'huge' sweet spots that will lead to longerstraighter drives. In my opinion, this is notstrictly true due to the shape of the driverface. In the image on the right, you willnotice how the face has a radius on it; thiscan vary depending on the model ormanufacturer but in general not by verymuch. It's this radius on the face that makes it soimportant to strike the driver correctly; infact, it's the shape of the face which givesus the Gear Effect that is found on drivers, most fairway woods and hybrids. GearEffect is there to help us with slightly off-centre strikes. A ball struck slightlytowards the toe of the driver will result inthe ball curving right to left in flight.Strike the ball towards the heel of theclub and the ball will curve to the right.

Think of it like this, a heel strike on adriver with no Gear Effect will fly leftwhereas a driver that has a radius on the face will curve the ball back to the right -

Page 35: May 2013

35

well at least that's the theory!

This is true even if face impact is tested on a swing robot, which has one of the mostrepeatable swings on the planet (apart from a customer who once told me they hadnever missed a fairway in their lives! - an off-centre hit will impart spin on the balleven if the swing was perfect.

However, this is where it gets interesting. Many golfers associate a fade with a shorterdistance tee shot. This can be the case, but it's not really to do with the shape of theshot. It's more to do with the area on the face where the ball was struck. Basically, theheel of the golf club (closest to the shaft) is the most 'dead' part of the face. Due tothe construction of the face, there is hardly any 'trampoline effect' in this area so aheel strike has less ball speed, resulting in a shorter shot. Furthermore, a heel strikecan impart more back spin on the ball, which leads to a higher weaker flight. Couplethis with the reduction in ball speed and you have a very short drive.

Cyprus has been in the press alot recently, so it was notwithout a little concern that weheaded off to Aphrodite Hillswith a group for our second golfholiday week of the springseason.

However, we needn't haveworried; the resort wasexcellent, very comfortablerooms, and good food. Althoughthere are several fantasticrestaurants within the complex,it was a little chilly at night, andthey were closed so we had achoice of buffet, Italian orCypriot and they were great.

We played mostly at theAphrodite Hills course, which isspectacularly built on either sideof a large valley. There are some awesome shots over ravines with thecrystal blue Mediterranean Sea beyond. One round was played at the SirNick Faldo designed Elia Course. Which in time is going to be a greatcourse, but you need to play it acouple of times as many shotsto the greens sit above you, butgreat fun.

Our winners for the week wereCecil Wheatstone in the men'sevent and in the ladies, fromChannels golf club Judy Dunbar.

Can you recognise the well-known Essex County PresidentElect, showing great style?Answers on a postcard please!

We are back in action now that spring is hereat last Despite spring being late to arrive, we have playedall but one of the events in our April fixture list. Theonly “casualty” was the combined Under 16 andUnder 18 boys team match against Suffolkscheduled for 4th April. Unfortunately, severeweather made the Felixstowe Ferry courseunplayable. Highlights of the month of April are asfollows;

The Keating Trophy: This was won by BobbyKeeble of Abridge, who is our 2012 AmateurChampion and a member of the England Boys squad. The Keating Trophy is the first of the Order ofMerit tournaments in our calendar. The qualifyingrounds, 36 holes scratch strokeplay, were played atFrinton on 6th April. Bobby Keeble returned thelowest score of 144 gross. The top 16 from thatfield went forward to the 18 hole knockoutmatchplay stage played at Frinton on 13th and 14thApril. The knockout matches were nearly allclosely contested, some going to extra holes.Congratulations to Bobby Keeble, and also toDaniel Vaughan of Orsett who was the otherfinalist. Mitchel Sarling of Rochford Hundred(who is also in the England Boys squad) gave BobbyKeeble a serious challenge in the semi-final, theoutcome not being decided until the 18th hole.

The Berkhamstead Trophy: Congratulations toGary Oliver of Hainault Forest who was in a threeway tie for first place and lost to a birdie at thefourth extra hole. The Berkhamstead Trophy is aprestigious open competition contested by thecountry’s finest amateur golfers. Past winnersinclude Luke Donald (1996) and Tom Lewis (2010),now both Tour professionals. To return an equal topscore in a large field of players from all over thecountry is a marvellous achievement. Gary, who is aprominent member of our county team, describedhis feelings as “over the moon”; so he should be.

STARTING ‘EM YOUNG: We are increasing our efforts to encourage youngboys and girls to take up golf and develop anenthusiasm for the game. We want to provide opportunities for them notonly develop their golfing skills but through

participation to discover that golf can be fun as wellas being competitive in the nicest and friendliestpossible way. We also want to provide a pathway tocounty and national stardom for the most talented.

For the Under 12s.Keith Mitchell, our County Junior Organiser, hasintroduced a new approach to coaching Essexyoungsters. This was the main theme presented fordiscussion at the well attended Essex JuniorOrganisers meeting held at Chelmsford on 26thMarch. David Brooks, the lead county coach, chaired asession on the route to England representation, which is the background to this important newapproach to developing Under 12 year old golfers. Itwas stressed that the route to represent England atamateur level is mainly via county golfrepresentation.Accordingly, we have established five centres acrossthe county where Under 12s can develop theirgame alongside others of a similar age andexperience, under the guidance of our professionalcoaches. Each of these centres will serve up to 15 golf clubs. Each will provide 50 hours of supported golf toabout 25 youngsters. Activity sessions will be basedmainly on short game. There will be no charge for any of these sessionsbut we will be looking for a degree of commitment. We hope to identify talented individuals at an earlyage who can be developed and matured over theyears to county representative level and perhaps goon to even greater achievements in golf. The five centres are at Frinton (Professional ScottRushbridge), North Weald (Professional PaulSullivan), Little Channels – formerly known asRegiment Way (Professionals Jack Cole and DavidMarch), Crowlands Heath (Professional MarcusRadmore) and Garon Park (Professionals Ben Jonesand Gary Jacom). If there are any promising 8 to 12 year olds whowould like to join this program, they should ask dador mum to contact either Keith Mitchell([email protected]) or the professional atyour nearest centre.Three cheers for Keith Mitchell whose personalenthusiasm and commitment is driving this along.

The firstevent of the year was played at Gosfield Lake on11th April. There were some very impressiveperformances as the detailed report from KeithMitchell, our county Junior Organiser describes.

Team News.A combined team from our Under 18 and Under 16squads played Hertfordshire for the CheshuntSalver on 2nd April. Sad to say we lost. However, our Under 16 team won a friendly match againstMiddlesex a week later on 9th April. Our first team played the annual friendly against theEssex Professionals at Frinton on 3rd April andcame away with a win.Full reports follow.

On a very cold and windy day at Frinton Golf Clubthe Essex County team had the pleasure of playingthe Essex PGA Professionals. This was a hard foughtgame, played in good spirit despite the appallingweather. The morning’s foursomes proved to be anoutstanding performance from the county squadlosing only 1 of the5 matches. Young MitchelSarling, having played in the U18’s tournament theday before, was called in at the last minute to coverfor a late withdrawal, played exceptionally well withhis partner Mark Stone winning 5 & 4. Other goodresults were from Matt Baker and George Evanswinning 7 & 6 and Ben David and Reece Franciswinning 5 & 4

The afternoon singles were played in even colderconditions with stronger winds. This did not seemto deter any of the players, with the professionalsfighting back to gain early leads in most of thematches. After the first six matches had finishedthe score was three all. A strong push with wins by

Mark Stones, Matt Baker and Jordan Slater gave theCounty Squad a three point lead.

A six four win in the afternoon resulted in theCounty Squad winning the match 10 points to 5.Millbrook G.C which is situated among rolling hills

was well presented and proved to be an excellenttest of golf.

The team comprised of 4 U16 and 6 U15 playerswith 3 of the latter playing their first U16’s match, namely Zac Taylor, Jack Staines & Jack Dyer.

The morning foursomes didn’t prove a success withEssex losing the first three matches. Josh Hickling &Chris Grant halved their match and Zac Taylor &Jack Staines producing the only win by 3/1 so thescore from the morning was 3½ to 1½. We arenot sure whether it was playing away or playing ona course that demanded control that produced theA.M. result but it can be said that a number of puttsfrom within 5 / 6ft were missed and perhaps thiswas pivotal. In the afternoon the first 4 matches produced 3 ½points with Dylan halving against a fellow EnglandRegional Squad member. Ryan by his own admissionwon his match by rediscovering his focus. Excellentwins by Callum and Jack who at one stage were 3 &2 holes down respectively. Essex lost the next 2matches but the rest of the games were finelybalanced with the possible result going to eitherside up to last hole. Chris who had never been

down till the 16th was the first to win, followed byJosh and finally Zac and Jack who were bothrelentless in pursuit of their first singles win.

Special thanks to Millbrook re the quality of thecourse and their hospitality especially in the waistdefying servings of food.Final Result: - Essex 9 – Beds 6

U18 and U16 combined team started their seasonwith a match for the Cheshunt Salver and after themorning foursomes nothing could separate thesides at 3 matches each. The afternoon started wellfor Essex with Mitchell Sarling (Rochford) beatinghis fellow England international Nick Ward 2&1 andthis was followed by a win for Scott Hudson(Braintree)4&3 and a half for Dan Garner (Romford).Unfortunately Essex had to wait until the ninthmatch for its next win with Sam O'Brien (Stoke byNayland) quickly followed by Dylan Mahmut(Romford) both winning. In the end this was acomprehensive win for Hertfordshire 10.5 t0 7.5with Essex only taking consolation that they wereable to field some of the younger players as some

Essex Junior Golf Tour (Under 14)Sponsored by the NORMAN GARON TRUST

Played at Gosfield Lake - 11th April 2013

Rearranged from the previous week when the snowmanaged to interrupt proceedings, this event eventuallybegan with a reduced field of 44 players owing to thechange of date clashing with Junior Open to which someboys were already committed.

The field featured some boys whosegolfing ambitions are already very highand whose record indicated that theyshould feature strongly in the leaderboards, but it was a young anddiminutive Joseph Defries (WarleyPark) (21 handicap) who took thehonours for the day by scoring six

under his handicap and record a Stableford score of 42points. His round was extremely steady and he recordedonly two one pointers and a birdie. An impressive displayfor one new to the competition. Joseph was in the Under13 section and took the prize for the Under 13 Handicapsection.

In second place at Under 13 were Callum Hensby( Stokeby Nayland) (14) and James Styles (Chigwell)(18) with 41points each.

The Under 14 section saw animpressive display from Alex English(Stoke by Nayland) (11 Handicap)who scored 41 points andrecorded three birdies in his roundat the 8th, 10th, and 17th.Hisround was good enough to take theUnder 14 scratch prize with 30 points winning from BenRendell (Clacton) (6) on countback.

Second place for the Under 14 Handicap went to JackCharlton(Loughton) (16) with 40 points

The girls section was won by Holly Haslam (LittleChannels) (12) with 33 points who also won the Scratchprize with 21 points, Ysobel Lush (Langdon Hills) (36)took 2nd place in the Handicap section with 31 pointswhilst Harriet Lynch(Thorndon Park) (16) was second inthe scratch with 22 points.

Nearest the pin was won by Charlie Haddon (Romford)

The next round of the competition is arranged for Sunday5th May at Forrester Park. There is still time for newcompetitors to sign up by going to the Essex County WebSite and downloading the forms (www.essexgolfunion.org).

A full record of all scores and standings is available on theWebsite.

We are very grateful to Gosfield Lake for hosting theevent, especially in rearranging it so quickly following thecurtailment the week before.

RehearsingThe difference between practicing and rehearsing is that by rehearsing; you are trying to recreatethe situations that you will be facing in the future, and preparing yourself to deal with thesesituations. If you have prepared for a situation, you will be calmer and more likely to be able todeal with it effectively when you are faced with it. Here are some different ways you couldrehearse. Rehearse on the Practice area- Imagine yourself in thesituation, you may be on the course at your upcoming round ortournament. Visualise the situation with the club you may needand give yourself an appropriate target and try to recreatedifferent situations you will face. This may be a particular drive, iron shot or situation such as being tied for the lead comingdown the last hole. This can also be done on the practice greensuch as making a 10-foot putt on the last to achieve your target. Also, you can work on any problem shots you have troubledealing with.

Rehearsing on the range to prepare for upcoming situations you will have to dealwith.

Mental rehearsal and playing what if? You don’t always have to be at the course to work onyour game, and you can do a lot at home by visualising or imagining what you would like tohappen. Find a quiet place where you won’t be disturbed and relax. You can run through the likelysituations that you will face and see yourself dealing with them successfully. Don’t always assumethat every situation will go toplan as things invariably won’t.You want to be prepared to dealwith many different situations.Ask yourself what you would doin numerous situations? Such asdouble bogeying the first hole! How will you respond? Orwhat if you birdie the first fourholes? How will you feel?Imagine how you will react andconduct yourself? Furthermore, prepare yourself for playing with different playing partners, formats and other situations you may face. Use past experiences and learn from how you dealtwith them in the past and what you would do in the future.

Rehearse on the Course- When you're playing practice rounds or when the course is quiet, you can put yourself in different situations that you are likely to face, or work on shots that youmay have problems with. So when it comes to the round, you will have faced that situationpreviously. Give yourself tough shots and evaluate where you may miss a shot. Try some hardshots and ones that you have had trouble with in the past. Be careful not to upset the greenkeepers by playing numerous balls. I am suggesting you play one or two shots from thesesituations. Look for spots where you may have a shot depending on your tendencies. Manypeople will have a hole that they have problems with, so play the hole and find a solution to thisby trying a different approach or club off the tee.

Under new managementPGA Professional Michael Porter has recently taken over the Epping golf range.

“It is a very exciting time to take over the range as the site where we are based is going to be redeveloped within 18 months.Once complete we will have a newly built golf store and a fantastic clubhouse where our clients can sit and relax.

I'm looking forward to making the golf centre a premier practice facility in Essex".

I believe to create a good practice facility the basic fundamentals must be in place. These are good golf balls, mats and lighting.

That's why at the golf centre we have brand new Srixon 2 piece golf balls, replace mats at the first sight of wear and have retuned our lighting to ensure you can see the ball throughout its entire flight night or day.

The golf centre has a newly stocked golf store where we stock all major brands at hugely competitive prices.

We have also invested in the gc2 launch monitor technology (as used by Rory Mcilroy and Ian Poulter) to provide expert tuition and custom fit services.

Slow Slow Quick Quick Slow!!Well now the golfing season is truly under way, with the first of the Women’s Majors the Kraft Nabisco, andof course the Masters having been completed. We were privileged to watch some of the most amazingputting skills under the most extreme pressure situations.I believe too many golfers concentrate solely on the line of the putt and not enough on the speed of thegreens and pace of the stroke which influences distance control. Tension in the stroke is one of the mostcommon faults inhibiting a smooth effective stroke. We will all be playing on quicker greens over the next few months so I would like to give you a fewsuggestions we can apply to help achieve a slow smooth putting stroke.

• Grip pressure: Holding the handle too tightly can be caused by a putter grip which is worn or too thin. The trend over the past year has to play with a thicker grip to help reduce tension and excessive wristaction. Fig 1.

Fig 1

The amount of “grip pressure” applied to the handle is hugely important especially on very quick greens ordownhill putts. I recommend a grip pressure of between 4-5 on a scale of 1-10

Figure 2 – Grip Pressure

Page 57: May 2013

• Forearm Tension: The forearms at address should be loose to facilitate a smooth and relaxed rhythmicalmovement of the shoulders in the stroke.

• Stroke Speed: The pace or tempo of the stroke is vital when playing on quicker greens. When playing onTour I used to slow down the tempo of my practice stroke, especially when under pressure aiming to replicatemy actual stroke. It is imperative you do not decelerate too much through impact when working on tempo.A very simplistic verbal cue such as “tick tock” can help maintain your tempo or with the use of ametronome.

• Putter pressure: At address I always rest the putter head lightly on the surface of the green as opposedto applying pressure “pushing” the putter head into the ground. This assists to create the smooth movementof the putter head in a slow and controlled fashion as opposed to a quick and jerky movement.

Hopefully this article has helped you to recognise when tension creeps into your putting stroke and providessome practical tips to overcome this.

Arctic Blizzard 1 : Essex Captains 0The Society of Essex Lady Captains, kicked off the new season with their annual fixture with the Societyof Essex Men’s Captains at Upminster on April 4. This is a really popular event and everyone was lookingforward to a great day both on and of the golf course. Sadly, the weather had other ideas, and thecompetition had to be truncated, with some groups only managing 5 holes before an arctic blizzarddescended making the greens unplayable. Thanks to Upminster Golf Club for hosting the event andproviding a delicious early meal for the chilly and disappointed captains. The Men’s Golf Society whoseturn it was to organise the event this year will try to arrange a new event in September, so let’s hope the sunwill be shining.
