Comes to WashingtonSpotlighting Local Treasures

Last summer, when the enormously popular public television series Antiques Roadshow came to Washington to hold one of its extraordinary appraisal events, WETA mobilized in support of the mammoth effort, and a host of

our volunteers helped make the day a great success for the public and for the production. Roadshow and WETA staff moved thousands of visitors through the production set to have their items appraised — a monumental undertaking. This month, we get to see how that big day in August makes great television as the three Washington Antiques Roadshow episodes premiere on WETA TV 26 and WETA HD, revealing the fascinating treasures discovered at the event.

This month also brings a wide variety of other engaging programming, from the powerful civil rights documentary Freedom Riders: American Experience to the intriguing BBC natural history miniseries Wild Caribbean (along with the series Wild Australasia, which continues from April); from a new Masterpiece

Classic adaptation, South Riding, to the annual National Memorial Day Concert — a co-production of WETA — and the many program offerings that mark Asian Pacifi c American Heritage Month. On Classical WETA 90.9 FM, we celebrate composer Gustav Mahler, featuring his works, and on Front Row Washington we spotlight performances from the Fredericksburg Chamber Music Festival.

Antiques Roadshow: Washington, D.C.airs Mondays, May 23 & 30 at 8 p.m. on WETA TV 26 & WETA HD

Last summer, Greater Washington was gripped with antiques fever as local residents scoured their house-holds for their fi nest heirloom, best yard-sale bargain and most intriguing historical memorabilia to bring in for appraisal at the Antiques Roadshow event at the D.C. Convention Center. WETA staff turned out en masse to help run the massive single-day event last August, which attracted more than 4,500 attendees (from among nearly 20,000 entries in the ticket lottery) bearing 9,000 items for appraisal in the hopes of a pleasant surprise at the valuation tables.

This month, the segments recorded at the event can be seen for the fi rst time as the Washington Roadshow programs premiere on Monday, May 23 (one episode) and Monday, May 30 (two back-to-back episodes), sharing the great fi nds and fascinating items that caught Roadshow producers’ attention in the nation’s capital. On May 23, among the broadcast’s items of note are a letter by Martin Luther King Jr., an Andy Warhol lithograph, and a unique silver tea set (see page 10). On May 30, among episode two highlights are an 1813 Congressional sword, a Tiffany mantel clock, and a Charles Schreyvogel sculpture (left). Episode three items

include a circa-1840 temperance banner, and a valuable circa-1925 oil painting by Jessie Willcox Smith. Surrounding the D.C. programs, WETA-produced interstitial mini-documentaries — WETA Extras — spotlight

Antiques Roadshow host Mark L. Walberg, follow two area residents on their journey through the Washington Antiques Roadshow event, and go behind the scenes of the program with a Roadshow producer. The most popular series on public television today, Antiques Roadshow features specialists from the country’s leading auction houses and independent dealers traveling throughout the United States, offering free appraisals of items brought to Roadshow events by the public. For more appraisals of intriguing items, tune in on Friday evenings this month to Priceless Antiques Roadshow from the BBC.

Wild Caribbeanairs Wednesdays in May at 8 p.m.

on WETA TV 26 & WETA HDa four-part series from the BBC explores the Caribbean Islands and Sea, from parrots and pirates to shipwrecks, sharks and glittering seas, examining the natural world and cultural history of the region. An embodiment of paradise, the Caribbean conjures images of crystal blue waters, magical coral reefs and lush tropical forests — and the series is a visual feast, emphasizing the fauna of land and sea, their environs and the forces of nature that shape the land and undersea environments. Treasure Islands (May 4), the fi rst episode, gives an overview of the variety of the Caribbean’s natural history; episode two, Reefs & Wrecks (May 11), spotlights coral reef habitats; episode three, Hurricane Hell (May 18), spotlights the impacts of these storms on the people and wildlife of the region; and episode four, Secret Shores (May 25), features an exploration of the Caribbean shore of Central America and the fauna to which this coastline is home.

Mysteries in May:Sherlock Holmes, Poirot and Prime Suspect

Thursday nights on WETA TV 26 & WETA HD Each Thursday night, WETA Television presents a lineup of acclaimed mystery dramas, leading off at

8 p.m. with the series Sherlock Holmes, featuring Jeremy Brett in his signature role as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous London sleuth. Next, at 9 p.m., WETA presents a weekly double

feature of Agatha Christie’s Poirot, starring David Suchet in his longstanding role as the great Belgian detective (and Poirot fans, don’t miss David Suchet reprising his role on Masterpiece Mystery!: Poirot: Murder on the Orient Express, airing Sunday, May 22 at 9 p.m. and co-starring Dame Eileen Atkins, Barbara Hershey and Hugh Bonneville).

Last, at 10:40 p.m. each Thursday, the night of mysteries concludes with Prime Suspect, with Helen Mirren starring as London detective Jane Tennison. This month, series four of

Prime Suspect features two distinct storylines — The Lost Child and Inner Circles — of two episodes each.

Masterpiece Classic: South Riding airs Sundays, May 1, 8 & 15 at 9 p.m. on WETA TV 26 & WETA HD

a feisty schoolteacher returns to her north England home and is drawn to a man who despises everything she stands for in Masterpiece Classic: South Riding, adapted by celebrated screenwriter Andrew Davies (Little Dorrit, Pride and Prejudice) from Winifred Holtby’s 1936 novel of social consciousness, secret romance and scandal. The love story, presented in a three-part miniseries, stars Anna Maxwell Martin (Bleak House) and David Morrissey (Sense and Sensibility) (right) and Douglas Henshall (Collision) (left) and is set in Britain as its class system is beginning to crumble. In the story, heroine Sarah Burton arrives in Depression-era Yorkshire to shake up education at a school for girls, sparking confl ict with a stern landowner, Robert Carne, a tradition-bound gentle-man farmer who crosses swords with the new headmistress — before falling in love with her.

Filmmaker Stanley Nelson’s documentary Freedom Riders spotlights a coura-geous band of civil-rights activists, chronicling a chapter of American history that stands as a testament to the power of personal conviction and courage. In 1961, many states violently enforced segregation, while the federal government, under the Kennedy administration, remained preoccupied with matters abroad. That is, until an integrated band of 400 college students, including Diane Nash, John Lewis and Jim Zwerg, decided, en masse, to challenge segregation by riding Greyhound buses bound for the Deep South. They called themselves the Freedom Riders and, enduring savage beatings and imprisonment, they managed to bring the president and the entire American public face to face with the challenge of correcting civil-rights inequities that plagued the nation.

Exclusive corporate funding for American Experience is provided by Liberty Mutual. Major funding is provided by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. Freedom Riders has been made possible in part by a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Additional funding was provided by Lynn Bay Dayton, Nordblum Family Foundation, Corporation for Public Broadcasting, and public television viewers.

Continuing a miniseries that began in April, the BBC documentary Wild Australasia features four films in May that explore the natural wonders of the Australian continent — Earth’s largest island — and surrounding seas. The series spotlights a range of habitats on land and sea, exploring the animals that dwell there. Southern Seas (May 3), examines fascinating creatures of the southern seas; Gum Tree Country (May 10), visits the great Australian Bush and its eucalypts, or gum trees, and denizens of these forests; Island Arks (May 17), explores the islands, such as New Guinea and New Zealand, spawned by the Australian continent over time, and the distinct character of each’s wildlife. Concluding the series is New Worlds (May 24), spotlighting the impact on animals of the arrival of humans in Australasia.

In the fi rst episode, Edgar ventures to India — to Mumbai and Delhi — to create a hit Bollywood song with vocalist Sona Mohapatra and meet Kailash Kher, one of India’s most prolifi c performers, producers and musical stars. Kher also brings the members of his band Kalisa into the studio for a performance.

For 23 years, the Fredericksburg Chamber Music Festival has presented top-fl ight recitals in the heart of historic Fredericksburg, Virginia. Classical WETA 90.9 FM has had a long association with the festival that dates back to its inaugural year. This month, Classical WETA’s weekly local concert broadcast Front Row Washington once again presents highlights from this annual festival — in two programs featuring members of the Muir String Quartet

(at left), fl utist Carol Wincenc, clarinetist Alexander Fiterstein, and pianist Michele Levin, among other musical artists.

The fi rst program airs Monday, May 23 at 9 p.m., and features Rossini’s Quartet No. 1, Brahms’ Quintet for Clarinet and Strings in B minor, Op. 115, and Haydn’s “Seven Last Words of Our Savior On the Cross” in a setting for string quartet and narrator. The second broadcast of performances from the Fredericksburg Chamber Music Festival programme airs Monday, May 30 at 9 p.m., featuring four works: C.P.E. Bach’s Quartet for Flute, Viola and Piano in G Major,Ernö Dohnányi’s Piano Quintet No. 1, and two compositions for two instruments: Prokofi ev’s Sonata for Two Violins, and an arrangement of Handel’s Passacaglia in G minor for violin and double bass.

Classical W TA 90.9 FMClassical for Washington

Inspired by the Washington National Cathedral Lenten performances last month on Choral Showcase, Classical WETA 90.9 FM’s weekly Sunday night, 9 p.m. program focuses two broadcasts this month on the Stabat Mater, a 13th-century hymn to Mary on her suffering during the crucifi xion of Christ. The “Stabat Mater Dolorosa” words have been set to music by many composers. Scheduled on Choral Showcase on May 15 are a sampling of them — the settings by Verdi and Poulenc, plus excerpts from those by Domenico Scarlatti and Rossini. The following week, on May 22, Choral Showcase spotlights Dvorák’s Stabat Mater in the recording conducted by Giuseppe Sinopoli.

Choral Showcase in maysundays at 9 p.m. mahler month

May is Mahler Month on Classical WETA 90.9 FM and also on VivaLaVoce, marking the 100th anniversary of the composer’s death as well as continuing the celebration of the 150th anniversary of his birth (in July 1860). Scheduled through-out May are Gustav Mahler’s symphonies and song cycles as well as informational vignettes about his life and his music.
