fghani Kush is among the top favorites of any connoisseur of dank cannabis. This bud is a dream for both smoking

and growing. It has been the keystone in the development of new cannabis strains for more than three decades and i tse l f has been s tab i l i zed over the pas t few centuries. This Kush was originally bred in the valleys of the Hindu Kush mountain range in Afghanistan, specifically for itʼs resin to produce hash while much of the seed was used for food. The dist inct characteristics developed from many generations of breeding these plants, geographically separate from other old world indicas, has created an independent type of cannabis commonly referred to as ʻafghanicaʼ.

# The particular genetic traits of Afghani buds are much like their sister indicas from Pakistan and India, but are much more prominent with the classic features. The plants have very large broad leaves with rounded edges, strong stocky stalks and branches, and dense root systems. They are very pest and disease resistant, and can withstand a drought very well. Once they are given just over eleven hours of darkness, they will stretch quickly, then stacking begins immediately, and the few new leaves that develop will become increasingly smaller, jutting out from the bud. When the calyxes swell between the small jagged sugar coated leaf structures, it forms the very unique look of Kush. Flowers will be fully developed within 7-8 weeks, which outdoors will likely be before fall rains and dew can cause trouble. Once trimmed, dried, and cured the fat dense buds glisten with resin, revealing shades of light green and blue-green behind bright orange hairs creating a truly alluring cannabis bud.

# # Afghani buds have been bred into many other cannabis varieties for such desired results as higher yield, shorter flower time, and greater potency. Another great aspect for breeding these genetics is for better access to many of the worldʼs greatest cannabis strains. Many clone-only plants have been made available in seed form by crossing to a good Afghani father. Many long flowering sativa strains have been more accessible to indoor growers after being crossed to an Afghani Kush.

# The major variation between the different kinds of Afghani buds manifests in the vast array of flavors that can be produced. The original Afghani and Hindu Kush can have hints of lemon and lime, with piney and sometimes nutty undertones. However many fruity and zesty flavors have been developed out of Afghani buds. Some of the most

famous flavors include Blueberry, Bubblegum, Sour Bubble and Northern Lights. Hash plant and B.C. bud are renowned for their potency. And there are many acclaimed hybrids created from Afghani lines such as Skunk #1, AK-47, and Orange Crush.

# Afghani Kush is undoubtedly one of the very best indica buds in existence. The effects are lazy, sedative, and happy, with some confusing times, and many moments of hilarity. The intense aromas and flavors complete the perfect Kush. And the good feeling high creates the perfect setting for chillinʼ on the couch with the bong, a good movie, plenty of snacks, and a few toasted friends. This is definitely a bud to add to anyoneʼs personal menu.

outhern Humboldt Seed Co l l ec t ive , commonly referred to as SOHUM Seeds is a fairly new seed

company in the market. Their main breeder Ringo has thirty five years of experience and has been breeding cannabis since a very early age. He told me during his late teens he had to hide all his “projects” because of state laws and regulations, but that did not stop him. He got a hold of whatever strains he could and ultimately ended up in Humboldt county California with access to higher quality strains.

Eventually, Ringo was able to purchase a parcel of land and pursue his passion. He can be seen as an early pioneer in the organic cannabis seed industry.

S O H U M s e e d s provide superior strains and all their seeds are cultivated f r o m o u t d o o r p l a n t s , ut i l iz ing the Sun and quality organic ingredients. SOHUM unlike many other seed companies provides CBD rich strains. “CBD is a compound in Cannabis that has medical effects but does not make people feel “s toned” and actual ly counters some of the effects of THC. After decades in which only high-THC Cannabis was available, CBD-rich strains are now being grown by and for medical users.” (Project CBD

Online) The Granny Derkle has two

d i f f e r e n t phenotypes, one is THC rich and the other is CBD dominant. It i s a c r o s s b e t w e e n Grand Daddy Urkel crossed with a Purple

Diesel back crossed with a Sour Diesel, Purple Erkle Cross. It has a very sweet aroma and taste; it provides an energetic yet pleasant sensation. The Purple Cheesel is another strain

that is 2 to1 ratio of THC to CBD, i t i s a P u r p l e D i e s e l c ro s sed w i t h a S k u n k , c ro s sed w i t h a C h e e s e and back c ros sed

w i t h a Purple Cheese. It has a very sweet cheesy musky taste, the high is very potent and has great CBD potential.

One of the highest tested CBD strains from SOHUM seeds is the Sour Tsunami. It has been tested at 11.3%CBD. It is derived from Albion Sour Diesel x Tsunami. This

cannabis is very unique; it has a musty but sweet taste, and is known to help with pain and inflammation. SOHUM seeds have a catalog of eleven different strains; one of their most popular items is the OG Ringo, named after the founder/breeder of the seed bank. This strain has tested as high as 27.98% THC it is a OG back crossed with a phenotype of OG Kush. It is a beautiful plant that produces large, succulent blossoms that are incredibly aromatic with earthy floral undertones. It has a sweet smooth exhale and great lung expansion. It is ninety percent Indica , however the plant does grow to a decent size.

SOHUM seeds have all of its flowers fully grown and lab tested, the company tries to make purchasing seeds as easy as possible and making premium seeds more accessible to consumers. Also, the seed bank is affiliated with Project CBD which is a “is a non-profit educational service dedicated to promoting and publicizing research into the medical utility of cannabidiol (CBD) and other components of the Cannabis plant.”

ith a cornucopia of quality medication available to the

modern medicinal cannabis user, taste has become the essential factor when making a choice as to what medicine to buy. When it comes to hash, often times the extraction method can pilfer certain terpenes which hold most of its flavor. There is one type of extraction method that allows for most but not all terpenes to remain in the hash, that is the dry sieved method. This method consists of moving

or striking dry cannabis across a mesh screen to slowly collect the trichome heads as they fall on to a vessel for later drying and pressing. If this process sounds familiar it’s because this is the same process that has been used by the Moroccan hash makers for centuries! Modern dry sieve hash makers use semi-industrial machines such as electromagnetic siever shakers that can automate a once ancient and laborious task of sieving the cannabis.

Though dry sieved hash is far superior in flavor it does at times contain more plant material than cold water or gas extracted hash. Nevertheless for the patient looking for a quality effect with the most amount of flavor dry sieving is the way to go. So next time you’re at ECWC pick up a gram of the Goo hash, its perfect example of how dry sieving can produce a medicine that will retain its full flavor and still pack a powerful punch!

A different way to medicate: Solar Rips

W

CONCENTRATE OF THE MONTHSieve Hash

With summer just around the corner mother nature offers us wonderful venue to explore new and old ways of medicating. One method of medicating that has been synonymous with the wonderful sunny summer weather is what is known as solar puffing or solar ripping. This involves using a magnifying lens or optic, to gather light rays from the sun and concentrate them to a single point, creating a solar vaporizer or laser. While this method is limited to day time use, it is very beneficial for medical cannabis patients on the search for a cleaner method of i g n i t i n g t h e i r m e d i c i n e f o r consumption. The best part about solar ripping is that most patients have everything they need to get started in there homes already!

To get started you’ll need to gather your medication, favorite glass/metal/plastic smoking device, and a magnifying lens. One thing to remember about magnifying lenses, is that the diameter of the lens is what determines how effective or potent the focused rays of sun will be. Using a lens that is at least 3-4 in

diameter will do the job pretty well, anything smaller will still be effective just not as quick to heat up. Also both plastic and glass lenses work equally as well to gather light, so don't worry if all you got is a plastic book page magnifier, it will work as well!

Once you have all your tools head out side and look for the sun. In order for the lens to gather enough sunlight to be effective, you must hold the lens so that the sun rays are hitting the lens at a 90 degree angle (morning or mid day is the best time). With the sun rays at a 90 degree angle a small focal point should manifest about 2-3 inches from the lens, this is where you want to position your bowl of

medicine. It might take a couple of tries to find the focal point of the lens but don't give up. Once you see smoke, you are in business!

So next time you cant find that elusive bic lighter, dust off that old magnifying lens and take a solar puff. As will all incendiary devices always exercise great caution as they can become potential dangers.

For May's newsletter, I was tasked with writing a review on a product that

is somewhat new to the El Camino Wel lness Center inventory fold- Oil of the Olive edible oi ls . We carr y three varieties, which are habanero oil, garlic oil, and basil oil, and all are intended for use as cooking or dressing oils. I selected the basil oil and was excited to arrive home and begin cooking.

At f irst I noticed that the product had a t t ract i ve packaging. The little green glass bottle looked on par with any imported, specialty olive oil one

wou ld f ind a t the g rocer, complete with a ta stefu l l y designed label. I cracked open the cap and breathed in the aroma of the oil, which was thick with cannabis and basil and created a del ightful herbal fragrance.

Reading the label, I noted that two tablespoons was equal to their notion of a dosage, so I accordingly planned how I'd use the oil- sparingly, but not too sparingly, so as to medicate myself enough but not too much, a n d

determined that I could cook the fish and vegetable medley in a s aute pan wi th a coup le tablespoons of the oil, then dress my salad with some of the basil o i l , some regu la r (non -medicated) olive oil, and red wine vinegar.

As the basil oil dispersed itself and cooked over the fish and vegetables (turnips, carrots, and leeks), it filled the kitchen with that enticing cannabis scent, causing my guest and I to salivate

TESTINGEdible of the Month continued

expectantly. Soon, the entire dinner was prepared, and we took our places at the table to enjoy.

$ You'd have to like the taste of cannabis in your food (I do, very much) to have liked the flavor of these dishes. The earthy taste of marijuana was definitely present, which is encouraging to those chasing a medicinal effect. I gladly ate up every bite and joined the ranks of the clean plate club.

$ We waited for the high to set in, and honestly, this was my only quasi-complaint about the whole affair- it wasn't that strong. I like a couchlocking, intensely potent effect from my edibles, and this oil didn't deliver. The buzz was very mild, and coupled with a smoke, was enough to achieve relaxation. This would make it an excellent choice for those who like eating their cannabis but dislike the intensity that most offer. It is also a good choice for those who want to control their own dosage carefully, as it can experimented with in relation to a person's tolerance and that person may easily adjust the amount they intake.

$ Oil of the Olive flavored cannabis-infused oils are available at El Camino Wellness Center in four ounce bottles for $12. This amount, according to how much I used personally, was used for two people over the course of two meals plus a snack, so I'd also like to point out that it's a pretty good value.

" El Camino always has a great var ie ty o f qua l i ty medicine.  The staff is knowledgeable and very friendly. Every time I visit itʼs a positive experience.  In a time of recession all we can do is vote with our wallet.  My vote will always be here at El Camino."

rotect Your Grow

Many local growers are putting in their crops about now so we want to avoid common pitfalls.  The Almanac predicts a long, hot, dry summer!    Be optimistic because we always do better when we raise the bar.  We tend to do better each year as we learn more

we expect more and we get more.

This grow is prepared with good organic soil mostly blends from Gardner & Bloom, but any good garden soil works best.  Don’t use potting soils unless you intend to use it indoors because potting soil is a light soil and will not retain the water necessary in your pots for good growth.  Natural soils (soil from outside already) may be mixed wi th an amendment soil to use it.

In this photo the area to be p lanted i s p r o t e c t e d from animals digging with chicken wire.  The ra i sed bed or the

ha l f bar re l s work we l l but remember to drill drainage holes in the barrels if you use them.

Security is a concern and the best way is a fenced area with a nice big dog or two.  German Shepherds make pretty good watchdogs but they get bored if no trespassers come.     Pitbulls tend to do well without as much attention all

the time and they can do the job too.  Property owners have used dogs for a very long time because dogs are smart and normally won’t hurt anyone seriously.

Protecting our grow of ten becomes more difficult when natural hazards and

d i sea se h i t our plants.  Mites and mold can be controlled with Safers Soap applied by a sprayer.  Rain, even dew is a real hazard especially to buds in later growth.  A Sulphur shaker can be applied dry or mix it with water and spray it on the plants before rain hits.

This will help prevent mold but l a rge colas should, if possible, be p r o t e c t e d f rom ra in with the use of canopies or tarps tied up abo ve

your plants.  Don’t lay the tarp directly on your plants, it will harm them.  Let’s hope the Almanac is right and we have a late fall this year with no rain.

Information from Pure Analytics Lab

The 40th annual NORML conference held in Denver last week highlighted the importance and growing interest in non-THC cannabinoids with a panel devoted to the subject featuring Steve D’Angelo (Harborside Health Center), Martin Lee (Project CBD), Jahan Marcu (Cannab i n o i d r e s ea r c he r ) a nd Samantha Miller (President of Pure Analytics).

With D’Angelo setting the timeline for the growing awareness and interest in CBD, Lee focused on the amazing medicinal benefits and shared moving testimonials received through the Project CBD website in the prolific CBDiary including one account of improvement in the quality of life of a patient with severe IBS.

Jahan Marcu of Temple University stepped the audience through the basic science of cannabinoids, introducing the lesser cannabinoids such as CBG, CBC and THCV and their known biological activity. The NORML attendees were surprised to learn of all of the different pathways in the body that these powerful compounds affect. Of special interest to many was the discussion of the association with seratonin receptors and the amazing pre-clinical findings on the ability of THC and CBD to eliminate breast and brain tumors.

Samantha Miller, President and Chief Scientist of Pure Analytics closed the panel with a discussion on the current landscape of the Cannabis testing industry including an “airing out” of the issues featuring the prevalence of

unqua l i f i e d s e r v i c e p r ov i d e r s , instrument companies with predatory marketing practices hawking used equipment to dispensaries and the lack of regulation leading to confusion at the patient and dispensary level about the rel iabi l ity of different analytical methods for the active ingredients in cannabis. At the opening of her presentation Mil ler described an overhaul of the content to address the issues raised in a recent Denver Post news article just prior to the NORML conference. “After I read the article I decided, this is what people are asking about both in Colorado and California, this is what I need to cover.”

Miller also presented a list of “10 quest ions to ask your cannabis s c i e n t i s t ” c o m p i l e d b y a n in ternat iona l team of cannab is sc ient ists working to provide a framework for cannabis lab method validations and certifications. “We hope these questions will develop into a simple and useful tool for patients and collectives looking for a reliable cannabis laboratory to partner with.”
