Sohere’sthedeal:thisyearasmallnumberofclassmateshaveofferedtogivegiftsoverandabovewhattheyusuallygivetotheDCFIFwecanentice60%ofclassmatestogivetotheCampaignthisyear,endingJune30.(Ourusualrateisabout50%.)Theyhaveagreedtomatcheachgiftfroma“lapseddonor”(aclassmatewhodidnotcontributetotheCampaignlastyearandhasnotcontributedtotheCampaignasofthedateofthisletter)upto$100eachwithanag-gregatetotalof$3,000ifwecansecurecontributionsfrom60%ormoreofClassmatesbyJune30,2010.Ifparticipationislessthat60%,thematchwillproportionallybereduced.TheFIRST20 re-activated donors will receive a “Dartmouth College” cap regardless of the final DCF partici-pationrate.

Peter Thomas Dole,ofParis,IL,passedawayonMonday,March15,inTerreHaute,IN.HewastheownerofDoleLawOfficesinParis.BorninBuffalo,N.Y.,PeteenteredDartmouthfromLakeForestAcademy,wherehewasaNationalMeritScholar,swam,andplayedfootball.AttheCollegehemajoredinhistoryandwasactiveinanumberofactivities:ZetaPsiFrater-nity,theInterdormitoryCouncil,theDOC(PresidentofBaitandBulletandDirectorofFreshmanTrips),andCaptainoftheRifleTeam.

PeteenlistedintheU.S.Army,servinginVietnamasaradiooperatorandparatrooperwiththe101stAirborneDivision“ScreamingEagles,”earningtwoBronzeStarsforhislaterserviceintheGreenBerets.AtthecompletionofhismilitaryserviceheearnedhisjurisdoctoratefromVanderbiltUniver-sity.AfterworkingtwoyearsfortheSecuritiesandExchangeCommission,hereturnedtohishometownofParisin1975,andwaselectedtoatermasEdgarCountyState’sAttorney.In1980,heenteredintopartnershipwithhislatefatherinDole&DoleAttorneysatLaw.

PetewasamemberofthePresbyterianChurchinParis,whereheservedonthechurchboardandasadeacon.HewasthecurrentCityofChrisman,ILattorneyandalongtimemember,boardmember,pastpresident,anddevotedsupporteroftheParisYMCA.HealsowasanEagleScoutandremainedactiveinscoutingthroughouthislife.Petewillberememberedasanavidoutdoorsmanwholivedtohunt.Locallynicknamed“DeadeyeDole”,hewasaloyalsupporterofEdgarCountyPheasantsForev-er,servingastreasurerforseveralyears,andwasactiveinorganizingandhostingtheannualSponsorShootandYouthHunt.Hisdedicationtouplandfowlhabitatcreationearnednationalrecognition.HealsowasaLifeSponsorofDucksUnlimited,andwasanaccomplishedracquetballplayer,backcoun-tryskier,andcyclist.Heespeciallylovedhisfamily,hisfriendsandhisdogs.PeteissurvivedbywifeBeckyandthreedaughters,Dr.Polly(RichardBailey)DoleofPalmdale,Calif.,AnnaDoleofChrisman,IL,andAshley(Cliff)HudsonofLittleRockandthreegrandchildren,EmmaBailey,LucyHudsonandJuliaBailey.Forthosewhowish,thefamilysuggeststhatmemorialsbemadetotheParis,ILYMCA.

Douglas S. Scarff,atage65ofShrewsbury,MAonMay7afterashortbattlewithcancer.CherishedpartnerofPatriciaA.Segerson.Predeceasedbyhisparents,DonaldandMarieLouise(“Taffy”)ScarffofShelburne,VT.BrotherofAnneW.Scarff (PeterSnedecor)ofAmherst,MAandtheentireSegersonfamily.Helovedtheoutdoorsandhiking,particularlythemanywalkingtrailsofMartha’sVineyard.Having lived inmanyvenues inhischildhood,heattendedandgraduatedfromDartmouthCollege in1966andtheUniversityofMichiganLawSchoolin1969.StartingoffhislawcareeratShearmanandSterlinginNewYorkCity,hethentransferredtotheUnitedStatesSecuritiesandExchangeCommissioninWashington,D.C.AttheSEC, he assumed increasingly advanced positions, including as Director of the Division of MarketRegulation. After a brief stint at a private law firm in the D.C. area, he returned to the SEC as RegionalAdministratorfortheBostonRegionalOfficeandthenAssociateRegionalDirectoroftheNortheastregionoutofNewYorkCity.Heretiredinearly2006.
