4-Her’s will learn how to prepare for an overnight horse show and what is expected of them throughout the Kent Co. Fair. Topics will include fair entries, what to bring to Fair, horse health and safety in a new environment, show day tips, horse show rules, showmanship, and participation in a mock horse show. Attendees should bring a horse to ride/do showmanship with (if possible) and dress in neat riding attire according to the weather. This attire should include riding boots, riding pants, form fitting jacket/shirt (please no baggy jackets so that when riding the instructor can see your body form, i.e., if your shoulders are back), and an SEI/ASTM certified riding helmet. Attendees will be divided in 2 groups, so it is possible for 2 youth to share a horse/pony. Parents are strongly encouraged to come and listen and learn. This is a great way for families new to showing horses to find out all about the fair. A 2nd clinic will be offered on a Saturday in May 2014. Attendance at one of the two clinics is MANDATORY. The horse show is changing for the fair this year and it is in the best interest of the 4-Her and their parent(s) to attend. Please register by 10/10 so instructors can adequately prepare. Participants should eat before arriving and bring a drink for the afternoon. All information and materials provided.

The coalition is looking to expand its membership! If you are interested in underage drinking issues, heroin and other drug issues in Kent Co. Join ASAC and make a difference.

Currently the Coalition is funding saturation patrols, liquor store compliance checks and 3rd party sales prevention activities with law enforcement through a state grant. The coalition is looking for volunteers interested in attending county liquor board meetings, conducting environmental scans and more. See below if you would like to volunteer.

The Coalition sponsors an annual Prescription Drug Roundup in April. However, if you have unused, expired or medications no longer needed, they can be dropped off at the Kent County Sheriff’s Office (on Flatland Road), Monday – Friday, 8:30 am – 4:30 pm. They will take over the counter, prescription and even pet medications. Not only does it get them out of your house and reduces access to youth, medications are disposed of properly and not polluting our environment or water supply.

ASAC is a coalition of community members, volunteers, agencies, law enforcement, schools, private business and youth serving organizations. For more information on how you can become involved locally with substance abuse issues, please visit www.kentasac.org or contact Beth Hill at the Extension Office or Nora Becker, 410-778-7918, Kent Behavioral Health.

CHARACTER COUNTS! Fairness ~ Trustworthiness ~ Respect ~ Citizenship ~ Responsibility ~ Caring

To learn more about CC! Visit www.CharacterCounts.org , Josephson Institute Center for Youth Ethics. We all face Choices, lots of choices. This was the topic of week 2 in-school Character Counts education. This couldn’t be more true for 4-H. Every day you make choices – what to eat, wear, and how to spend your time out of school. In choosing 4-H for your out-of-school time activity, you have chosen to build your character through honesty, responsibility, service to the community, leadership, decision making, experiential learning and so much more. Notice I didn’t even touch on project work which adds responsibility, mastery of skills, knowledge and dedication. In choosing 4-H, you have chosen to make yourself the best you can be!!!!
